Have seen companies just start and end up in a mess. A couple of hours upfront saves from hours or days on the back end!
The saying goes "An ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of cure". I used to tell my techs, "10 minutes on the front will save you 30 on the back". Whatever idiom you need to sink it in, its worth it. Love the work you do. Y'all are always busy. Wish you were down in Missouri, I'd be glad to have you build something for my family.
I love, love LP siding! Awesome product. Great teaching. I randomly cut the lengths as well. I don't bother with feet and inches. Just randomly cut so they never line up and looks manufacted. I've never had much waist either doing it this way.
Definition of pride. Taking the time and exercising care in executing a plan, because at the end of the day, you can stand back and appreciate your efforts to make something look amazing.
What brand of pencil are you using?
Metal vinyl siding starter is the perfect kick out for your starter row. I’ve used with Hardie and LP. Works great and no ripping of material.

I like the use of the reference line and story pole method. In fact it makes sense to use a level as the story pole to keep the marks true. I can definitely see how this would make the whole process quicker and more accurate in running the siding! Thanks for sharing this one, Kyle. It doesn't take much to get off a little on that center line around any building for it make it look bad! This just makes sense!

Great evergreen info as always. I plan on using the using the lap siding on the property I’m rehabbing here in Rock Falls. It’s an incredible looking product.
My experience with LP siding has been very positive. I left a couple off-cuts outside from a job two years ago, and I can’t see any degradation, even without the ends sealed. Maybe the original release Smartside had problems, but I’m absolutely sold so far.

Would really like to see how you would start horizontal siding on a second story (open gable) above the first story peak, where there is less than a foot of distance between the roof surface and the end wall, where the starter strip would be. So it would be two peaks (lower and upper), if looking straight on at the front facing.
I would think measuring downward from the horizontal line at the top of the first story peak would be the best way to go about it.
One thing that makes the story pole easier, especially when using a level, is to use a piece of lime green painters tape to highlight each marking, makes it easier to see, much more so if there are lots of corners.

Random seams! Someone gets it! I'll never understand why so many siding contractors think the "stair stepping method" is the best way to side a building. Even if you are hitting studs on your butt joints the "random pattern" always looks better in my opinion!

I started researching siding options recently and for some reason all the builders are shit talking about LP smart side. And they are so passionate about shit talking about it to the point of saying that vinyl is better, that it makes me super suspicious of why are they so angry at it. You are the only builder I've heard saying good stuff about the product. I believe you ! 😁
The original product had a flaw and had to be recalled. The newer smartside is great and that defect has been fixed. There are some who either dont know there is a difference or wont let it go.
I love your correct work as profesional. I always watch your work as lesson and i have to say that got your advise to do the same for my home.
I love to see the intelligent work. Construction work is not for the cracked out dropout. It is a profession that deserves the respect that ‘we’ can bring to it!
I am a recently retired LEO and I am not ready to retire. I wish that I could find a contractor with the work ethic and knowledge as you to work with as I continue on. I love big timber and post/beam construction. I had my fill of stick frame as a young man. I would love to build my own home in the next few years with the knowledge that I re-acquire. You inspire, thank you

Come from new England originally, did a lot of ceder shingles ect. Always tried to lay out story pole for courses to hit top and bottom of windows and doors if possible , like that siding ,looks like clapboards, nice job .
I like the fasteners and the joints of the smart side. The joints of siding are one of the first things to show damage swelling from moister! They definitely have developed a good system for their siding to deal with moisture that siding will inevitably be exposed to over the years. I think one of the biggest things I like is you can get pre-painted Smart siding and trim that will last for a long time. I like the fact that they remove a huge labor burden of painting!
Agree…. Above and beyond the burden of the painting, it’s also done in a Factory under ideal conditions. Something that doesn’t happen often on site in the real world

Awesome vid. Thank you! I see that you butted your siding directly up to your window trim. Versus installing the siding first and overlapping the trim afterwards. I have heard some people mention water/moisture concerns with this approach... can you comment or do a video talking more about the trim details.... around windows/doors, inside and outside wall corners, top of wall detail. That would be amazing. Great channel!

Great video Kyle! I would personally ditch that stabila level and make a story stick out of a straight 1x4. Before you install your corners, you can screw your story stick to the wall flush to the outside corner. If you have the layout on both sides of your story stick, you can layout both sides at the same time. Not only is this much faster, and more accurate than moving a shorter stick to multiple locations, but your corners will always line up! 😁👍🏼
Great detail and job installing the siding! Although the tape around the ac disconnect may make it impossible for the electrician to finish wiring it.

Extreme accuracy is a luxury, but somehow a labor factor must something to consider. The reference line is always a must, but it can be transposed every five feet. snap lines in the early first rows, but after that the gecho gauge is fine. The reference lines can easily help to check the accuracy.

I sided my house 5 years ago with LP siding. I made a story pole out of 1x4 pine and cut off the bottom inch after installing the bottom row
Would really be nice to see a video on how to install BEFORE the sheating is installed. Some LP can use studs, others need sheating. Would be good to see a rehab beginning with stripping out old siding and then going from there. All videos show LP/cement board after sheating is up.

LP has a huge history of failure!!!!!!
The most typical installation problem with LP SmartSide is the missing paint at the ripped, cut, sliced edge, butt joint, and cut edge just above the roof and window.

I have a 1970 barn with no house wrap and the siding isn’t easy to take off what would you do? I was thinking something from the inside turning it into a house right now you can see siding on the inside love your channel
Great job guys! I really enjoy your videos. No gonna lie though, a lack of redundancy with waterproofing makes me nervous (i.e just relying on the epoxy-coated sheathing system and not adding a WRB that also breaks up surface tension to let moisture drain out). I was a sub doing stucco remediation for a big builder on the east coast. We were taught by 3rd party engineers to have redundancy in all our waterproofing methods. Just a comment, not a rebuke! would love to hear your perspective. Cheers!

Love your videos. Always great content and informational. My question is your reference line. Do you put it where ever it lands and mark everything off of that or calculate it so that the siding lines up there? How do you know where to start off the reference line?
When I was doing siding we would hook two chalk lines together and just wind them back and forth when we were snapping several lines.
Great video with all your prep work before you start the actual work! What size are the nails you used since no studs and what size do you use when studs are involved? Also do you mark the stud locations in order to nail them on it?

the most important part imo(outside of what ya'll are talking about installation wise) if someone is building their house and wants their lap siding to look sharp is to use a framer that crowns their studs and culls the bad studs. no need to be cheap. culled studs will get used in bracing, purlins, deadwood, etc.
What's the thought for the ripped siding below the windows? It seems like the spacing is more than 8" and it may sag over time? Are you gluing or adding fasteners below the windows on these pieces?
I would like to see a video on how to properly install board and batten.
So vertical instead of horizontal siding. I have a home in California that was built in 1976 and has some particularly ugly and rough stucco on the outside. do I need to bust all the stucco off then sheet the exposed framing with plywood and then install the board and batten? I’m trying to update the house to what they referred to as a modern farmhouse look.

Kyle, what you’re suggesting is that the stabila level should come with the siding marks from factory?
You may know this or maybe not, when snapping your reference lines hook both of you're snap lines together. After done snapping as you wheel it in, it pulls the other one out.
On that aluminum flashing to concrete, I would have put a little calking on the bottom to keep the dust and little pebbles out. It's easy to get crap stuck in between when pressure washing. I'm shocked that Greg didn't do the 8" nail spacing and you were already about 4' up the wall when that happened. Glad you were able to show him what 8" looks like :) You should put a mike on Greg. I'd like to hear him roust you every know and then.
can't caulk the bottom. if water gets behind siding it needs to escape

How do you set your laser up on the opposite side of the house to make sure your reference lines match up?
Great video question though... shouldnt you use square metal flashing between the seams of the siding? This is the way i was taught.
What is the manf recommended nail placement spacing from top the siding piece? I was always taught 3/4” to keep the siding from flapping in the wind, but your nails looks almost tight to the top.
Good video. Why do you use the less expensive LP flat siding? I have always used the LP with spacer on the back.

What are your thoughts about the grain on the reveal not matching up? See one side of the lap has a wood grain look and the other side has a tight grain look.
How would you compare the Expert Finish of the LP Lap siding versus upgrading to the Diamond Kote?
Also I’ll be doing SIP walls from Enercept, and the sheathing doesn’t come with a WRB like the WeatherLogic, what would you recommend for a solid house wrap that would help with water management without necessarily having to install a separate rainscreen? I’ve seen Benjamin Obdyke Hydrogap or I know Tyvek has upgraded wraps, etc.

If you had some tape with that measurement pre marked you would be able to just stick it to the sheathing which would be quicker and easier to see. Great job! You make it look easy and are doing a killer job!

I thought of that years ago...too many variables of different layouts. I just stuck with a story pole and make sure both ends are symmetrical our some yahoo is going to use it upside down.... yeah, I did it too! :~(
I can't remember where I bought them from, but what I got are story tapes exactly for this. It was like 5 bucks I use mine for the electrician to drill holes, for measuring backing for cabinets.
How do you orient your cut edge of the starter strip? Do you face the cut edge up or down?

Hi Kyle and Greg, I have a question about the lazer level. When you move the level to the other side of the house, how is the lazer adusted to the reference line due to variations in the grade?
From Ireland here, why do you put a screen between the concrete and the siding ( concrete holds moisture, I know ) and not the ends of the siding as they are unpainted and will absorb moisture. I would love for you to answer this in the next vi, long-time fan and follower of the channel.
