The fact that The Great Divide was the first episode I ever saw and it convinced me to watch the whole series despite it being one of the worst episodes is proof of this assertion
I think you're sleeping on the Deserter. It was a great introduction to fire bending philosophies and really showcased this isn't a completely good vs evil story. It also gives Aang the trauma of burning Katara and how that effects him for roughly 35 episodes until Firebending Masters shows him Fire has other purposes than destruction. It also is the first introduction of water bending healing powers, which is huge considering it leads to Aang's survival after Crossroads of Destiny. It's a slept on episode also Jong Jong is just a cool character.
Man i absolutely agree. This show just hit different in my childhood, and hasnt lost anything of its greatness. Just seeing some clips of the episodes in this video gave me the chills
My only disagreement is about the Guru episode. I thought the explanation of chi and chakras and the things Ang needed to conquer internally to truly master the Avatar State were relatable and inspirational to the average person watching the show. Otherwise bang on! I cheered for all your "best" episodes!
I agree with most of his rankings but I also think the Guru should be at least “average” given the implications it had and how Aang refuses to sacrifice those he loves for greater power as the avatar
I wish you liked Katara more she is one of my favorite characters. The southern raiders is one of my personal favorites. (I also think Katara is the most powerful water bender at the end of the show)
18:14. That scene where Zuko and Iroh reconcile always brings me to tears. It is so emotional and is honestly my favorite Zuko and Iroh moment in the whole series.
The Bumi episode should be ranked higher for the sole reason that it introduced the cabbage merchant Also The Cave of Two Lovers had SECRET TUNNEEEEEL so it should be slightly higher
My favorite character is Iroh, I think he was by far the greatest father figure in the series. Such a strong mix of being delicate and empathetic, whilst still teaching discipline and competence.
I can't call The Painted Lady a true filler episode (unlike the Great Divide, which I think is all filler and deserves to be at the bottom of the list). I think it's important in that it shows how tragic the war has been even for the people of the Fire Nation. You don't have to care for the plot, but that world building aspect of how the factories are polluting their own nation is important. I personally would bump it up one or two ranks. Still definitely bellow average.
I disagree. The Great Divide had good potential, it tested Aang’s ability to stay neutral and helping opposing sides, the downfall was that he solved a conflict by making up a story. The Painted Lady provided no plot, no new world-building and no new character development. It was just another “Katara helps downtrodden people” episode, and we already have multiple Katara episodes in Season 3
@@MrKingYuji tbh i liked that aang lied in the great divide. i hate the great divide otherwise but whenever aang reveals that he's lying it always cracks me up. it showed that he wasn't a perfect, all-knowing avatar that everybody wanted him to be but he was a 12-year-old boy who still had flaws despite holding really strong morals (seen in the final season 3 episodes). i also liked that it showed how flimsy the stories were that everyone was relying on to continue the feud because it was resolved by a 12 year old boy making up an un-fact-checkable story. but despite aang lying here it was intriguing to see his inner turmoil when he lied to katara and sokka about the map that he hid. aang was very much aware of the consequences of letting the zhang and gan jin tribes continue their feud that was literally impossible to resolve unless they had someone there 100 years ago to prove a side of the story-- which aang "did." and in katara and sokka's episode aang struggled so much with keeping his lie a secret because he knew it was selfish, and he ended up giving in and telling the truth fairly early on. it shows that not everything is black and white and there's this grey area and aang lying for the greater good of the people-- because i truly do think that the zhang and the gan jin would have killed each other if the feud continued-- was necessary versus aang lying for his own benefit and recognizing, acknowledging, AND apologizing for it (without ANYONE else pushing him to do so, which is so mature of a 12 year old to do) as it tore him apart because he KNEW it was wrong and the only one who was benefitting from his lie was himself. still hate the episode though. it's my least favorite and i find it incredibly boring except for the reveal at the end.
Such a good tierlist! As you put the episodes in the tier, i remembered how good this show is. Tbh, i didn't remember much of the bad episodes, but the good ones hyped me to watch this series again. Love to see your vids and hope you keep the good work. Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
Honestly i can agree with a lot of this. There's some i'd change, though the main ones would probably put The Desert higher and actually Nightmares and Daydreams. The Desert is a great showcase of what Katara means to the group, that was her at her strongest, because she kept them together when dealing with aang hurting, toph actually blind, and sokka high off his ass. They wouldn't have gotten out of the Desert without her. For Nightmares and Daydreams, I think it's just intentionally weird, filled with some great animation references. but also I think it's a good lesson about stress, different ways to deal with it, and the effects of sleep deprivation, which is what causes Aang's hallucinations towards the end.
Noooooo The Avatar & the Firelord as well as the puppetmaster should be in THE BEST category! They’re such incredible episodes. Tbh, Katara gets a ton of hate and I’m not sure if it’s just her as a character or the way she was written, but she’s underrated imo. She’s one of the few people that can blood bend & she chooses not too. Water & Air are BY FAR the best elements simply because of blood bending & Zahir in LOK literally suffocating the queen, also flying!!! The avatar world is lucky air nomads were peaceful monks & that water benders are peaceful too. And for The avatar and the Firelord, that episode couldn’t have been written any better. Zuko finding out this information is ultimately what gave him the final push to join team avatar. It was also a major plot twist imo. There was major foreshadowing that Zuko would eventually team up with aang but just knowing that he has a previous connection with the last avatar is just insane. There’s a fan theory that Monk Gyatso used air bending to take all the air out of the room when he was out numbered by fire benders. If you look at the scene where his bones are, his necklace and clothes are intact w/ no singe marks. I only mentioned this because I often feel the earth and fire nation get a ton of praise for how strong they are.. but look at what Air and Water can do!
And I wrote this comment before I saw you put the firebending masters episodes in the GOOD CATEGORY 😭 cmon what. That’s a really good episode. Those are literally the last dragons ever and we learned Iroh didn’t kill the last one.
Great timing! I'm rewatching ATLA myself right now and I'm halfway through S2 atm. Just a few days ago I was looking up tier lists and wishing that you had made one. And now here it is! :D

Two Episodes seem to stick out the most to me watching this video: Cave of Two Lovers: As annoying as the bards could be, I loved the backstory about Omashu. That was an interesting touch, but I do agree on the other drawbacks. Serpent's Pass: LOVED the ending of that episode because of how perfect the humor and emotion were blended

It’s cool seeing the different opinions others have as I have watched other tier lists and of course have some strong opinions of my own. For example, I think the southern raiders is an amazing episode that I’m kinda shocked you rated as low as you did. But anyway just another example of how different everyone views this show
I feel Nightmares and Daydreams should have been more of a traumatic episode with Aang dreaming about all he has lost and what will happen if he fails. Or it should have involved Aang training to fight Firelord Ozai (I think that's his name) since it's pretty out of place for Aang to go fight him without practicing first if with his fire powers taken away.
Totally agree with you about The Painted Lady -- as much as a crime this may seem, it was the only episode I skipped when rewatching lol. great video btw love your content!
Really Nice video, most of the ranking was what i would have done the but the great divide might have been in the good tier for me, but just an amazing video you made

@0:09 Are Avatar episodes ever not fresh in your head? If I go one month without watching the series I start feeling withdrawals and then I start watching the series again.
The only two I disagree with are the Seige of the North 1 and 2, and the Guru. The Guru gives us valuable insight into the Avatar State and what Aang has to do to master it. I dislike the Seige of the North simply because I feel that the actual Seige went far too quickly, it feels like the water tribe could barely put up a fight even though they should've been preparing for it for weeks leading to the actual invasion. I love the entire second half of the episode though and everything after the seige.
Bruh some of these takes… what! The episodes with great writing like Jet and the southern air temple. Have so many valuable lessons about war and life in general. Thats crazy. Same thing with the painted lady. Almost kinda some brain dead takes here And you just can’t get past the weirdness that’s literally the whole point in the episode, bro
its criminal the great divide is higher than the cave of two lovers. the great divide should be in the worst as its filler and the cave of two lovers gave us SECRET TUNNEL so its instantly good or really good
Love it I think there’s were few good episodes that couldn’t have been higher in the list but I go with it I hope you make ATLA breakdown video with all the Easter eggs
so bummed that you dislike katara so much to the point that she's one of your least fav characters! :( i feel like your disinterest in her character has definitely impacted your rating of some of these episodes. she's the heart of atla, with an amazing and moving character arc telling a story of war, loss, grief, but also hope, love and togetherness. without her, none of these characters would be alive, she technically brought aang back to life/to the world twice, saved zuko's life in the finale, saved the gaang in the desert. she's the only one who could take down azula. almost all of the major characters' stories just wouldn't function without her as she plays a key part in all of them. also, theres a compelling duality to her character, shes a warrior and also a healer, shes gentle and kind, but also bossy and angry, she's motherly and nurturing but can also be deadly, she always sees the best in people, but holds grudges and doesn't allow second chances. the core of her character is that all she wants to do is help people, especially people she loves, no matter what. there are lines she's willing to cross that her friends aren't, if it means making an impactful change. that's why her interactions with jet and hama are so heavy and important. but no matter what, love is always the motivation behind all of her actions.
"Even an average episode of Avatar is better then most episodes of other shows."
Truer words were never spoken :D

Oh My God I've watched avatar the last airbender at least 20 times, so I can even dictate some episodes. WALLAHI I can
its criminal the great divide is higher than the cave of two lovers. the great divide should be in the worst as its filler and the cave of two lovers gave us SECRET TUNNEL so its instantly good or really good
Personally, The Firebending Masters is top tier for me.
Agreed, that’s my favorite episode besides the finale
I had no idea someone else did this. Did a whole tiermaker myself. Never posted a UA-cam video but might do it just for this
Love it I think there’s were few good episodes that couldn’t have been higher in the list but I go with it I hope you make ATLA breakdown video with all the Easter eggs
I agree with most of these! Will you be doing this with the Korra series as well? And maybe even the books?
Love this video❤
it would be interesting to see a character tier list
SECRET TUNNELLLLLLLLLLLL
avatar the last airbender was one of my favourite shows growing up it's the reason I love serialised shows over episodic one
so bummed that you dislike katara so much to the point that she's one of your least fav characters!
(ofc everyone's entitled to their own opinion, hope this doesnt come off like im acting like mine is the only correct one!)
