That song at the end of "The tales of Ba Sing se" was so beautiful and had so many layers. It wasn't just a tribute to Mako, it was from what I've been told the last audio clip they got from Mako of him singing to himself after because he knew he was going to die from Cancer so that crying was actual crying. The new voice actor for the uncle said hed never sing that song on the show because that was Mako's song. The image of the uncle's son was actually a portrait of Mako that he got in his youth. And it's also just an amazing scene for that character and makes me cry every time i hear it (no joke)
I thought I detected a voice change with Iroh in the third season (part of why I feel they didn't have him on screen much) but I didn't realize the actor had passed that early on. Hearing all this definitely makes me glad they gave him the proper recognition he deserved. RIP my guy.
A massively slept on episode is: The blue spirit A great story with incredible humour (Sokka going mad), Phenomenal music, Stunning action (zuko and aang having to work together), and incredible character development. On top of this it sets up zuko’s turn to helping the avatar, and that ending!!! “Maybe we would have been friends too”
On the point of Zuko eventually helping Aang, The Western Air Temple is massively slept episode on as well. Seeing Zuko getting rejected (at first) by team Avatar while (we the audience) knowing that he’s finally switched sides is most of the most heartbreaking scenes in the show that no one talks about (even though the Gaang’s initial reaction is justified). I also like how even after he’s accepted into the Gaang, most of them still don’t fully trust him (except Toph, who knew that Zuko was being sincere cuz she can read heart palpitations). Which acts as a great setup for the next few episodes where he helps Aang, Sokka, and Katara and becomes a member of the Gaang.
@@taylorsly2392 That episode makes me cringe more than Scott's Tots. For some reason I get insane second-hand humiliation from Zuko trying to convince them he's on their side.
I think you should’ve covered, “happy birthday my son, if only I could’ve help you.” This dialogue hits me way harder, because the reason iroh never considers not helping someone is because he couldn’t help his son when he needed him
I have to say without a doubt. My favorite moment of this episode is when Katara tells Toph that she thinks she’s beautiful. Why is this so important? We know that Toph can feel the earth and use that to tell whether or not someone is lying. So this is my favorite moment because Toph can tell that even if those girls from earlier think she was ugly, Katara thinks she is beautiful. And it wasn’t just a lie to make her feel better, Katara genuinely believes that Toph is beautiful and that is just such a beautiful moment.
if she was lying, just to make Toph feel better, then my opinion of that part of the episode would have diminished greatly. I'm really glad Katara told her the truth.

Honestly I'm really glad Avatar was released on Netflix , cause I haven't really had the chance to rewatch the series in years , so it was definitely a great opportunity for me .
it's incredibly powerful and shows the confidence the writers have in themselves, to do an entire episode centered around a non-human character who has no audible thoughts, no speech, not even a human-analogue face to read. They believed in the strength of their writing and the animation team and it payed off powerfully, as such things do when made well. I outright cried for a nonexistent animal's pain because they took such care to characterize him
Everytime I rewatch ATLA I always have to skip Appa's Lost Days because of my love for animals. It hurt me so much to see an animal in pain and everytime I think of that episode it makes me tear up.
I think that Iroh’s story should’ve been last. It would’ve made the song and end tribute a bit better. You go from a sad depressing story to a goofy filler with Aang.
The Tale of Toph and Katara is so underrated, the part where Toph's crying and Katara tells her "and I know it doesn't matter, but you're really pretty" is so sweet! and it's nice to see the two of them struggling with normal teenage girl things
Right? It's little details they build that makes Avatar so great. The episode was really heartwarming, especially seeing Katara and Toph be the teenage girls they are and still be absolute badasses. People writing female characters need to take notes on the girls of Avatar.
"Is the Tale of Iroh the best part or is the ending the best part?" Both. Zuko is definitely good, but the bit where Iroh sits down and gives life advice to the mugger kills me.
@@pewpew5467 And miss out on all the witty humor on the salt content of water? No way! The joke's funny, but it's even funnier when you take an arbitrary thing in a uselessly literal way :D
"Tales of Ba Sing Se?" I'm not familiar. Are you referring to Season 2 Episode 15 "The Tale of Iroh And A Bunch Of Other Shit That Has Nothing To Do With The Tale of Iroh?"
They all have alot to do with "The Tale of Iroh", "The Tale of Zuko" especially. Iroh encourages Zuko to do normal things a teenager his age should be doing- making friends, having fun, relaxing, maybe getting a girlfriend... y'know, things Lu Ten couldn't do. Iroh wants Zuko to live the happy, peaceful life his son couldn't. He wants that for everyone, which is what we see them (sans Momo) doing.
I feel like they probably should have rearranged the segment order. That would have been a good ending; putting segments after it weakens them because people are still reeling from it.
*There’s no such thing as a “The Last Airbender” movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan here in Ba Sing Se.* P.S. Hey Schaff, what happened to your Detective Pikachu Review. Is it blocked?
Yeah, imo the tale of zuko was one of the first times where he seemed human, and where we got a glimpse of him as a person just existing, rather than being an antagonist or something
Kids: *break window playing a game* Iroh: "usually it is best to admit mistakes when they occur and to seek to restore honor!" Guy whos window broke: "when im finished with you kids the window wont be the only thing thats broken!" Iroh: "but not this time... Run!"
@C-3PO Protocol Droid I mean, yeah, it's not like he was pretending to be someone else responding to himself. The "good" was referring to " oh okay it's second, *good* " Though it could have been done in an edit..
One of the best attributes of Avatar: The Last Airbender is their filler episodes aren't filler episodes they progress the plot and character motivations expertly which is high praise honestly its so good if you haven't watched it shame on you go watch it.
I binge-watched the show a few weeks ago for the very first time, and the praises were well deserved. It's easily one of my favorite cartoons of all time.
Iroh’s part is my favorite because he reminded me of my granddad. He was a bomber pilot in Korea, and told a story about him being practically forced into the infantry. He lived a rough life until me and my cousin came along. I remember being young and my granddad watched this episode with me, and after that he’s hum this song, almost daily. He loved the song, and the show. He sadly passed away before he could’ve seen Korra, but I like to think he sat there with me sometimes.
I agree, Zuko’s and Iroh’s short stories are my favorite. I cried when he was singing to his dead son and even more to a real life person. In just a couple of minutes of screen time, I wanted the girl that Zuko had a date to be with him.
4:19 WHY DOES SOKKA MATCH UP WITH THE WORDS SO PERFECTLY AHH THAT HAD TO BE ON PURPOSE. Edit- wait no shit of course it was on purpose, it was just subtle lol
9:48 "... It's upside down, isn't it." One of the funniest lines in the entire show. Because she realises she messed up the poster, but it's even worse than she thinks.
I dont care about momo either. Little guy is cute but he hardly had any significance to the story compared to the rest of the cast. He could've been replaced by just about any other little creature.
A lot has already been said about Iroh grieving for his son, my take I would say is a little more multifaceted, Iroh was swept up in the war and fought along his son, he was a honored general and commanded thousands for the sake of the fire nation, in some regards he was quite a decorated leader. War comes at a cost and Iroh lost his son, a part of Iroh was lost that day as well and stricken with grief knowing he couldn't have saved his only child he lost his touch being a general but not a fighter. When tasked to look over his nephew Zuko the years of searching for the avatar and war efforts being made something changed in Iroh he saw Zuko going down a dark path, Zuko was obsessed with appeasing a system the he now saw as not as mighty as he once thought, with age, grief and discipline Iroh knew he had a second chance and to save Zuko from himself before the war took him as well. Even when Zuko abandoned him Iron knew his allgence was to Zuko and too what his late son stood for not died for too family. Thats what I feel Iroh was going through by the end of the show he wanted to save the last shred of innocence Zuko had and keep him from becoming the monster his brother become or dying for a father than never really loved him. In the end Uncle Iroh was Zukos real father and writing all of this is nearly bringing me to tears so I'm gonna stop now. Have a good day.
Having Zuko’s scar on the wrong side is really bothering me. I get you did it to throw off the copyright infringement bot but my brain is just screaming “Your scar is on the wrong side!”
The sheer badassery of Iroh disarming the mugger only to hand him back the knife and demonstrate proper form will never cease to get a chuckle out of me.
"The Great Divide" may be the worst episode, but at least it does a few things for the plot; showing how Aang likes to solve problems peacefully with his wit and diplomatic skills shows his nature, and sets up his conflict with Toph (where he has to face earthbending training head on and punch a moose-lion in the face) in "Bitter Work"
I feel like it doesn’t really teach Aang anything though? He never thinks back on it, mentions it again, or does anything that shows it affected him. I know the series is more episodic in s1 but it feels like the worst type of filler. Plus there are plot holes everywhere.
While I don’t like The Great Divide, my least favorite episode (and I feel like I’m alone on this) is Avatar Day. I know it does more for the story with adding info about Avatar Kyoshi, but everything with the town and the justice system was just dumb and pointless to me. Sokka says it best at the end of the episode. “This is the worst town we have ever been to”
I still miss the voice actor of iroh, he was and still is my favourite voice actor, he finally comes marching Home His song, leaves from the vine is such a sad song, best thing is it's not auto tuned, it's him singing about lost, you can hear it from his voice, and when you know he was about to die from Cancer, a disease that took so many innocent lives, It was even sadder ,He will forever be in our hearts
Even though the Tale of Aang didn’t have any heavy emotional moments, I think the whole thing was about his loss of Appa. He was looking for Appa but knew he couldn’t do anything in that moment to help him, so he helped the animals in front of him instead. That is a form of coping.
The things about Iroh’s story is that he goes throughout his day helping a baby, little boys, and a young man. The stages of his own son’s life get mirrored through the people he helps. That’s why when it gets revealed that the only person he couldn’t help was his own son it hits hard because this day was almost trying to make up for his one huge mistake. That’s why I think it’s the best part, let alone Mako’s song at the end which never fails to get me everytime
Listen we all know The Tale of Iroh is the best but I really think The Tale of Momo is SEVERELY underrated cause it really makes the audience go "EXCUSE YOU WHA? HOW....WHERE...WHEN...WHY." leaves you shooketh.
@@weirdguy1495 yep.... I'll never forget my initial shock when I saw the paw print like...I was so confused then I saw the next episode and then I was just MAD lol I was sooooo hating on the head of the dai li along with most of my friends lol. We were all incensed
I also just feel that the animals are amazing characters in their own right and seeing Momo care so much about Appa is amazing. I don’t cry at Iroh’s song, but I always cry at the end, where Momo lays in the paw print. I will die on the hill of it being the best Tale.
The tale of Iroh is hands down the best 5 minutes of cinema ever released to the public. It shows Iroh just going about his day doing Iroh things until that gut wrenching moment. The way that Iroh sings "Leaves from the vine" to that little boy implies that he sang it to his own son. On its own the tale of Iroh may be second best, but when you take it into context with the whole rest of the series it is undeniably the best. Iroh was once a warmongering general that knocked down the walls of Ba' Sing' Se' but after the death of his son he went home to mourn. This mourning continued for the rest of his life and now, he is mourning it once again, not just normally but at the place of his son's death. It is heartbreaking and undeniably the pinnacle of cinema .
Season 1's love rectangle was annoying and the ending is a total cop out Season 2 is absolute garbage trashfire in it's entirety Season 3 is okay Season 4 starts out promising but ends on a very woefully disappointing note.
@@megabuster3940 Add in some boring/practically non-existent character arcs, repeated moments of forgetting their own lore and the fact that Sokka is dead and you got about everything wrong with Korra.
Legend of Korra did a lot of things wrong, but it also did a lot of things right, and I feel like it doesn’t get enough credit as a whole. It was never going to equal TLA. The bar was set too high.
Meddadius id personally say its wrongs outweigh its rights by far. Amazing music, amazing animation... but shitty characters (exception: Tenzin and his family), shitty plots, shitty lore, constantly breaking its rules and lore set up in the previous series, etc. I could go on. I wanted to like Korra, but right now it stands at a solid “Meh...” for me.
I'm just starting book three and so far I have few issues with the show but Transitioning from Iroh to Aang irritates the shit out've me. I understand not wanting to end a kid's show on such a downer note but I think Iroh's story makes for a perfect ending to the episode
"Is the Tale of Iroh the best overall part of the episode, or is the ending-" My favorite bit is when someone tries to mug him and he doesn't even flinch, asking "What are you doing?" in the most genuinely confused tone. So the former.
Iroh singing that song was the last thing Mako recorded. The emotion is real because they just told him he was going to die from cancer very soon. He loved the way it turned out and asked them to use it. We can hear this man mourn himself...
Toph: tries something unusual for her and is surprised to feel good about it (and confident in a part of herself she rarely considers in a positive way) randos with nothing better to do: mock her for it yeah I'd commit murder too tbh
After that build-up I expected a hotter take. Its pretty much how I feel about it and I think most people do. The ending of The Tale of Iroh is a 11/10 but the rest is a 9/10 while The Tale of Zuko is a 10/10 all the way. Really not worth arguing which is better because it is very subjective which of those you prefer.
Man that scene where iroh asks how the day went and zuko slams the door only to open it back up softly and say "it was nice" just always gets me. It's the delivery I just love I guess, it's so sincere and bittersweet. Getting to see zuko being aloud to be a normal teen for just a little bit and having to admit that he actually enjoyed doing something frivolous. Looking sad bc he's convinced he shouldn't want it. I just love that tiny end scene in particular and idk if I'm explaining why right lol. Jin doesn't realize how much good she did that boi
Zuko saying “it was nice” melted my goddamn heart, he deserves to be happy

Now that you mention it, Iroh never sang that in the third season.

A massively slept on episode is: The blue spirit
A great story with incredible humour (Sokka going mad), Phenomenal music, Stunning action (zuko and aang having to work together), and incredible character development.
On top of this it sets up zuko’s turn to helping the avatar, and that ending!!!
“Maybe we would have been friends too”
Blue Spirit is regarded as a Top 3 episode of Book 1, alongside The Storm and The Siege of the North, Part 2.
Taylor Sly That episode is my favorite in the entire show. It’s so nice to finally see three seasons worth of a redemption arc be completed.
foreverinafantasy “Hello, Zuko here!”

They hadn't revealed her lie detectors skills yet

Are we not gonna talk about how appa’s lost days is one of the saddest goddamn episodes in all of animation
it's incredibly powerful and shows the confidence the writers have in themselves, to do an entire episode centered around a non-human character who has no audible thoughts, no speech, not even a human-analogue face to read. They believed in the strength of their writing and the animation team and it payed off powerfully, as such things do when made well. I outright cried for a nonexistent animal's pain because they took such care to characterize him
9/10 for me
Everytime I rewatch ATLA I always have to skip Appa's Lost Days because of my love for animals. It hurt me so much to see an animal in pain and everytime I think of that episode it makes me tear up.
Am I the only one who thought that episode was boring?
100%! 😭😭😭💔💔💔
Mako wrote that song when he realized he was going to die.. that makes The Tale of Iroh even sadder to me :(
I know very little about Mako, but he seems as though Iroh was not so much a character as much as himself.
shit just reading this comment brought tears to my eyes again
By the way, Iroh's son portrait is Mako's one when he was young. I'll just leave this here and go cry under my blanket like the adult I am
His name is Lu Ten not Mako
@Frame Pucci he’s talking about the voice actor of iroh
I think that Iroh’s story should’ve been last. It would’ve made the song and end tribute a bit better. You go from a sad depressing story to a goofy filler with Aang.
Well, the change ws probably intentional, cheers you up I guess. But I misunderstood last as last place/worst and nearly rioted
Momo's tale was last because it was the only one with plot relevance.
I always thought the order should've been start with Sokka then go to Aang then go to Toph and Katara then Zuko then Momo and finish it off with Iroh.
I swear to god, I thought Zuko and Iroh's stories were swapped for the longest time. In terms of placement.
I feel like it should have gone Aang and Sokka first, then Katara/Toph and Zuko, and then finally Iroh and Momo.
Everyones gangsta until Uncle Iroh starts singing “ Leaves from the Vine”
you watch scissor seven???, cause you know the guy that stuns people with a sad song to fire notes at them, iroh can do that.

"The Great Divide" may be the worst episode, but at least it does a few things for the plot; showing how Aang likes to solve problems peacefully with his wit and diplomatic skills shows his nature, and sets up his conflict with Toph (where he has to face earthbending training head on and punch a moose-lion in the face) in "Bitter Work"
When your show's worst episode is still a character exploration that wasn't a waste of time and it made me laugh as a tween, you're doing pretty well.
Honestly great divide is still one of my fav s1 eps 🤷 we get to see aang be a little shit, and yeah his problem solving. Episode is hilarious.
I love The Great Divide
I feel like it doesn’t really teach Aang anything though? He never thinks back on it, mentions it again, or does anything that shows it affected him. I know the series is more episodic in s1 but it feels like the worst type of filler. Plus there are plot holes everywhere.
While I don’t like The Great Divide, my least favorite episode (and I feel like I’m alone on this) is Avatar Day. I know it does more for the story with adding info about Avatar Kyoshi, but everything with the town and the justice system was just dumb and pointless to me. Sokka says it best at the end of the episode. “This is the worst town we have ever been to”
I still miss the voice actor of iroh, he was and still is my favourite voice actor, he finally comes marching Home
His song, leaves from the vine is such a sad song, best thing is it's not auto tuned, it's him singing about lost, you can hear it from his voice, and when you know he was about to die from Cancer, a disease that took so many innocent lives,
It was even sadder ,He will forever be in our hearts
Even though the Tale of Aang didn’t have any heavy emotional moments, I think the whole thing was about his loss of Appa. He was looking for Appa but knew he couldn’t do anything in that moment to help him, so he helped the animals in front of him instead. That is a form of coping.
