    I find it funny that there are dislikes on these. I swear there are ppl who are paid to go thru vids and hit the dislike button. I've watched this tutorial series off and on all year and it's awesome. My husband gets worried when I start watching bc our apartment is usually cluttered with messy paper projects shortly thereafter. This video gave me a good idea for making a cool spooky tree/jewelry display.

      I never worry about the dislikes. There are some people who are so innocuously strange that it doesn't take more for the person to be wearing a color of shirt they don't like for them to hit the dislike button.

    I just want to say thank you for doing these videos and making the effort to put a full explanation of each step. I have only recently started crafting with paper mache and polymer clay but I already like the recipe for paste you use the best. Well, I have only tried Sculpey which works well enough for bigger more general shapes but gets super soft very quickly. I'm moving on to Fimo which is more firm so I can try more detailed projects. I'd be glad to let you know how it goes :) I'd love to see what you accomplish with it.

    Regarding the stem - what if you use the plastic that has been left - does that get wired and bulked up with newspaper? Also how do you preserve the plastic stem material when removing the insides?

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  9 років тому +1

      +Joanne Gennarella Yeah if you want to use the plastic just stick a wire in it and bulk it up. It's hard to preserve if you are pulling the guts out. You really just need to get in there with a pair of scissors and cut the top of the bag off as soon as you've pulled enough stuff out of there to reach it.

    Sir, your videos are so well done. I find it hard to believe you don't have more subs. With that being said, you at least have one more now. If I may, how long does the drying time take for one layer of paper clay? Or roughly from start to this point? Thank you!

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  9 років тому +7

      +Brian Rose Lack of subs I attribute to my more annual timing of posts. I'm not really a 'one a week' guy since my work takes up a lot of time. That being said I don't make any money off of my videos so a huge subscriber base isn't anything I lose sleep over.
      On to your question though. I like to give a layer of paper clay about an 8 hour overnight to dry with a fan on it. That way I know when I start the next layer on it the previous one is mostly moisture free and won't collapse at all if water from the new layer starts seeping into it. From start to the beginning of this video it's been about five days. One day for stuffing and top mache, one day for bottom, two days for paper clay, and one day for detailing. That assumes about one to two hours of work each day. All totaled you're looking at about 8 hours of working time and 40 hours of drying time. Hope that answered it well enough. Happy pumpkining. :)

  • @idlechimp
    @idlechimp 10 років тому +2

    How thick is too thick when applying paper clay? Can you bulk up a large area, like if you want the full eyebrows at once or do you always need to apply in layers and build it up?

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  10 років тому +1

      It is entirely a matter of drying time. Built up layers of no more than 1/2 inch thick will dry out overnight with a fan on them and let you proceed to steps such as sealing with no worry. Big slabs of paper clay more than an inch thick can appear dry on the outside but still have a moist core. The large slabby pieces are why I give every pumpkin 5 days to simply dry out when I am done with it to make sure every bit of clay is dry all the way through. So you can bulk up an area as much as you want at once but you just have to remember that the bigger the glop of paper clay the more time it will need to fully dry both inside and out.

      +Vickey Wilson I put leftover clay in the fridge but I have heard that you can store it in open air in a zip lock bag if you squeeze as much of the air out of it as you can. Obviously you still want to use it within a week or so if you try that.

    Hey I know this is a old video but still hoping you respond to comments. Just been sat here watching from video 1 & will be continuing to the end. Firstly I would like to compliment you in very detailed videos and great explanations. I was just wondering how long do you leave the clay to dry before working on another part, also how long from start to finish would it take you (an expert) to do a pumpkin just wanted to gauge how long it may take a novice to pull one off

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  6 років тому

      Oh yeah. People refer back to these and fortunately I don't get so many messages that I can't keep up with them. Assuming that you have more than a half inch of clay an overnight (8-10 hours) with a fan on it is more than sufficient to dry out most paper clay. If you're lucky and live in Arizona, USA then even less than that will work. Thicker sections than that will have their surfaces harden in that time and be workable and safe to touch and bump into things but will need another day or so to be able to completely dry all the way through. If you have a 3 inch wad of clay you run the risk of mold developing inside long before it is able to dry out completely. Assuming I have nothing else work on and I dedicate all possible time to a project I can knock one out in about 10-13 days. Drying time is the great limiter of how long you can go. If I could snap my fingers and make it dry whenever I wanted then I could have things done in about 3 days or less. I will usually start two pumpkins at once so I can work on one while the other one is drying. That way I feel I get a good return on my crafting time.

      @@Drachenfang thanks for the quick response ok that's good then so I could work on a part leave it for a day while I go work then come back to it and it'll be dry. I didn't know if it need a couple days to dry out properly. live in the UK so no such luck to have warm weather to help it dry out lol

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  6 років тому

      An overnight should be fine to dry it out for you and it makes for a nice pacing too. If you put a fan on it while it sits overnight then you are guaranteed that it will be dry enough to keep working on the next day. Even in the rainy winters we used to get in Essex you should be ok :)

  • @0pixieparadox0
    @0pixieparadox0 10 років тому +1

    I'm curious how long was it between videos. In many of them you say "I'm gonna put a fan on it" or "I'm gonna let this dry and come back" I've been working on a few things and it takes at least over night to dry a few layers of paper mache, I haven't even gotten to the paper clay yet.

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  10 років тому +1

      You're very right. In most cases I let things go overight. A few times I have put paper mache into a little station I made which has a fan and two heat lamps and it is firm after about three to four hours but that is only when I am working a few projects at once. Paper clay in particular is best left for an overnight span to make sure it hardens to an extent that any accidental nudging will not cause permanent indentations.

      Drachenfang Thanks for your quick reply. I got a late start on my projects this year, and well it's my first year making my own stuff, so anything to speed it up will help. I may set something up to help the larger projects dry more quickly.

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  2 роки тому +1

      Pretty much. Some kinds lend themselves better to certain aspects but really for layering the strips just about anything works. Paper towel is also a great substitute for the brown paper towel on the outside. These days I just smooth the clay though as I show in my version 2 videos.

  • @tracyg5993

    in regards to the detailed clay work, how long did you let it dry between clay applications?

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  8 років тому +2

      It varies. If I was really excited and I wanted to get back to work asap I would throw a fan on the work I had done and gave it about four hours before doing a bit more. The surface of the old work becomes somewhat hard and you can get away with doing a bit more so long as you don't put a lot of pressure on the semi dry areas. You cannot use those spots to take up the weight of the project at that time though but you can do another side if you need to. Otherwise I always let it go overnight with a fan on it. Figure a 12 hour interval before coming back to it for it to be fairly resolutely dry. Obviously, the more you pack on a single area the longer it will take to dry all the way through. After 12 hours under a fan though there is almost always a good hard crust on the top of the clay that can take on any challenge.

The paper clay sold it for me purely for the fact that it is such a friendly art medium that is so customizable. Is it possible to make a stackable pumpkins with one light system doing for chamber of commerce for fall debatableCan you help me work it out please

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  6 років тому +1

      They should be able to be stacked. I'd make 3 pumpkins of descending sizes, cut off the tops and bottoms of my bottom and mid piece(s), cut off the bottom of my top piece, arrange 'em in a snowman stack, mache strips between them all so I had a complete connection and then start paper claying them together too. Only major thing to bear in mind is that painting and sealing the inside will be a pain and possibly impossible depending on how you have them stacked. You could also make them unstackable again my making each part separately, attaching a cloth/blanket section pad in between them, and then epoxying in velcro strips to hold the stack together. Don't make it too tall or your bottom pumpkin may not be able to support the weight without reinforcement.

    How much shrinkage occurs with the drying of the clay?!

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  5 років тому +1

      Almost none. You may get some tiny surface spits from time to time but a quick rub over with some additional clay fixes them in moments. Otherwise one of the things I love about this medium is that it pretty much stays the way you sculpted it.
