You have inadvertently taught me how to make a miniature tree. I make models and small houses and have been looking for a really good tree trunk tutorial for months. I'm so excited to make my pumpkin. I feel like I have sat in on a master class.
Fantastic :) I know a bunch of folks who make small mache houses though I have no idea if that is the same medium you use. If you want to see some decent wood textures look up an artist by the name of Gary Fay. Glad you enjoyed the tutorial
I offered to make some Halloween props for my workplace ... remembering my childhood crafts, I googled papier mache ... and your tutorial popped up. I was fascinated, and watched the whole thing straight through .... then again ... and now I'm hooked! .... I now have several pumpkins in various stages of development, am racing towards Halloween .... and am LOVING the entire process. The only downside? .... this is seriously addictive!! Thank you SO MUCH for an amazing and inspiring tutorial!!!!!
I am absolutely stoked that you found the guide helpful. It is massively addictive. I know a few folks who have made so many pumpkins that they are selling them fairly well for the Halloween season. May your crafting continue to be productive and fun :)
I have watched all videos so far.. And I have to say.... I feel like I am going to want MORE when I am done.... ah ha ha ahaha ha I enjoyed watching every video so far. You have explained every little detail and I so appreciate how thorough you are... Not to mention humorous along the way.. I have read a couple of the comments and...even when I have told myself not to anymore... And I hope that you don't let peoples words get to you..Some people function on criticism when it's not really needed. Your videos are fun..instructional...Clear....and just simply WELL DONE... Fantastic Work !!! I will now learn how to Paper Mache'.
+sparkleme1237 Thanks so much. :) I never let people's comments get me down. This is the internet where people find it easy to be small by hiding behind pseudonyms. If they have a problem then it's their problem and not mine. I will have more up as soon as summer comes once again. Next projects on the list will be lighted tombstone-like structures, a thing called a 'burial totem' which I saw on facebook and have been itching to replicate even though I lost the original picture, and I have been told I have to do another pyrotechnic video so I think I will do red flash devices or some sort of red flame concoction. I look forward to seeing your stuff. :)
+Drachenfang .... Hi again Drach... I made my list of things to get and I will be on my way soon to purchase .. Yayyy.. I am so so excited and can't wait to show you the finished product.. I can't thank you enough for inspiring me to do this.. Yer the best.. Care
+Lonna Haney I'm glad you had fun with it. :) I would kill to have some people local to me to craft with. I live in a very culturally devoid section of central New York.
I have the same problem here in Kansas Drachenfang! No one seem to want to do anything together anymore except do drugs and/or get drunk. Pitiful! I don't do either of the latter! xo Lisa
I really love watching your videos!! You sir are an excellent teacher and I can’t wait to make some cool stuff on my own! Thanks for everything that you do😘
Me too! Intelligent humor too! I love your videos Drachenfang!!! Please don't change them!!! I love all the detail and high brow humour! Your creativity and intelligence are becoming lost to so many people. keep 'em coming darling and son't let the naysayers get you down! xo Lisa
Hey LOVE your videos, and comical running commentary !!!! Being a substitute teacher, I have a LOT of free time, so I watched all 14? videos end to end, VERY impressive!! I do have a comment though? When you added those Clay Worms to the base of your stem, it took on the look of a tree growing out of the head of the pumpkin? Not certain if that's the look you were going for or not? Keep up the great videos !!! It's Sept. 2015, are you going to do any new videos any time soon? God bless. Stoney327
i have always wanted to make a three stacked pumpkin monster could I leave the paper inside the bottom and middle pumpkin to give it strength or do you think they would hold up stacked empty
I would leave the paper stacked in them all but it also depends on how big you are making the stack. If you're making a huge one then add a lot more layers onto the bottom one and a few more layers onto the middle one.
Drachenfang Yes and no. It just keeps your hand sticky free so don't waste any time washing your hands to begin another part. It took me a lil bit to get used to as i dont really like having anything on my hands when I'm building.
Hello you crafter you - say I want to do my pumpkin smooth - not exactly mottled - and I want to add the addition of brown paper just because it seems like such a great step - will it give it only a slightly mottled look? I jut don't want to miss out on that step since I may just leave it unpainted and in the brown towel state because I think it is particularly interesting. Have fun!
+Joanne Gennarella Well you either add the skin or you don't. With skin is the mottled look I refer to and without is without. I'd still say go ahead and paint it. The towel is just adding texture that really pops out with the dry brushing phase.
You mentioned something you wanted to try with yarn but I don't recall ever seeing what you were going to do with it. What did you have in mind? My project is really coming along nicely! I am now adding the stems.
I wouldn't. It's reinforced with rayon fibers and the synthetic stuff doesn't soak up the mache paste. You can try it but I'd just go with regular old cotton.
Hey!! I found your channel by fluke an man am I stoked!!! just wondering? I checked out Stolloween an he mentioned he uses 2 kinds of Monster Mud , one recipe is the same as yours but I can't find the other one or the use for it,, umm just wondering if I need to use 2 kinds? an BTW you are awesome!! your videos are soooooooo helpful, can't wait for more ideas TKS!!!!
I had no idea that he had two recipes. Traditional 'monster mud' is just a 50/50 mix of drywall compound and latex paint which is often used as a fabric stiffener on outdoor props. That's the only thing I can think of. It's also why I'm careful to refer to it as paper clay rather than monster mud. I'm glad you found the videos helpful. :)
The clay in and of itself is not waterproof. I don't do it on the inside because it eats up a lot of clay and adds a lot of weight to no great benefit.
So I have been watching since video one on this tutorial and I am rather curious why you do not use slip to help bond your new additions to your old ones. This comment specifically applies to the addition of the veins of the stem where you say to press down firmly. With regular sculpting it is the best way to do these things to avoid oopsies in the future. With paper clay, have you had any issues with parts easily breaking off?
+Anthony Salvaty Nope. I've never had a problem with paper clay parts breaking of. If it were real earthen clay I would definitely use slip but the natural stickiness of the clay plus the fact that it is a fibrous medium and contains its own moisture to help recombine with the underlying layer makes the use of an intermediate bonding agent unnecessary.
Allright, Allright, Allright.....it worked! pliars and then hand...except wire got hot on hand???? Thanks again. I have a cell and can take pic when finished, I just want to show The Master, and I know how to download onto desktop, but how do I, where do I send finished pumpkin pic to you. This pumpkin is smaller than yours, maybe by half, and is for my 6 year old grandsun who said he wanted a "scary" pumpkin face...so I had to be somewhat tame. He's a tough little guy, part Irish and Malaysian, so I am not holding back too much!!!! For the first one I am pleased with the facial expression...
+Sky Crane Excellent. Yes the wire will heat up as you bend it because you are breaking the bonds between the atoms and that energy is released as heat.
It can be done but it has many flaws. Visibility is terrible, they wobble on your head unless you can correct for that, hearing is hard, and they're bulk and awkward. So could you, yes; should you... maybe but probably not.
Drachenfang I think what I may do is build something similar around a wireframe, possibly go with fewer total layers, drill some holes for hearing and do a helmet-strap system inside for stability. Great tutorial by the way!

+sparkleme1237 Fantastic. I hope it goes great for you. Feel free to ask any questions you may have during the project.
I am just awl over the whole thing. Step by step is the best way to go. love it.
+Manu Butler Yeah taking it in stages is about the best way to go with it.
You are such a trip, Love your ideas. Would love to spend a day crafting with you. You sound like such a fun person!!!!! Thank You,

Here in Utah, it’s full of crafters. If you came here you would make bank!!

My 6th year making them. Love it.
You are so incredibly talented ! ! Thank you so much for your videos they helped me so much!

I do the old school method mostly but I have graduated to using latex gloves....makes all the difference!
So the latex gloves make the smoothing go more efficiently?
Drachenfang Yes and no. It just keeps your hand sticky free so don't waste any time washing your hands to begin another part. It took me a lil bit to get used to as i dont really like having anything on my hands when I'm building.
Lonny Rabalais Ah gotcha. :)
Drachenfang I PM'd you a photobucket of my props..
Lonny Rabalais I saw, very nice. I like your skele's.

Nice. Was thinking yarn under the skin to look like blood vessel(ish) tubes.
I really hope you are a teacher because I think you would be amazing. Funny and intelligent!
That is my calling. I teach science in central NY
i wanna make one of these that will fit on my head and then i wanna cover it with fibre glass, how much bigger with i need to make it
They are a little clunky for wearability but give it a shot and let me know how it goes.
Hi, I am wondering if I should get coil cotton reinforced to not? (for the orbs)
I wouldn't. It's reinforced with rayon fibers and the synthetic stuff doesn't soak up the mache paste. You can try it but I'd just go with regular old cotton.
Dude. these are sick!!!! Do you sell them anywhere online?
Thanks and no, I do not sell them. Some of the people who have seen my tutorials have sold theirs though.

don't know if I missed this in one of your videos but why don't you add clay to insides? Wouldn't that make it waterproof?

Now I , get it. Thanks. Love your videos :)

+Sky Crane You can send me the picture through email. I am the same name at gmail.com
+Tele Yanna I might just do that. There are some good ones out there already where people have shared. I often post to 'Halloween paper mache.'
Do you think something like this would be suitable as a big mask?
It can be done but it has many flaws. Visibility is terrible, they wobble on your head unless you can correct for that, hearing is hard, and they're bulk and awkward. So could you, yes; should you... maybe but probably not.

@@mostly_water Thanks. This lady tried it, so here are her impressions: ua-cam.com/video/uCX9nMaZ7xM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=RachelMaksy
thanks for pumpkin, paperclay videos....... best on you tube,
Your a funny dude, learnt heaps thanks :)
Can you use modeling clay to do this??
You can but it's gonna take a LOT of clay which might be expensive
I love your work and your videos rock. :-D
Krista Hudson Thanks much. I'm hoping to have the new ones out soon. :)
Do you sell them
I do not. The price I would have to charge for them in relation to the time I spend on one would be prohibitive. Then shipping them is a nightmare.
. You are a paper-clay Superhero.!
+Dogsfriend73 Thanks much. I had a lot of fun doing it :)
Don't you hate it when your hands are all sticky.. and THAT is when your faces itches!! lol
+talonora Heh. I just itch anyways :)
oops i'm in northern calif, lol
