I love the "ordinary guy crafting at home" look and feel here. So many crafting videos look like they are done in a pristine studio that I will never have. Now here is a crafter I can relate to. Why didn't I find these videos years sooner?
Googled "paper mache" and after going through several articles and reviews I didn't care for, found this gem. You are clear, thorough, and funny. It was a joy watching the whole series from beginning to end. I used your videos to make a sataricle TMNT costume. Unfortunately I didn't start researching and making my costume until the week of Halloween. I decided to go with a one time use disposable, as leaving time to let the project properly dry in-between all the required steps was not possible. After watching all of your videos, I decided what I did and didn't have time to implement and improvised a little. This was still good enough for a first place trophy and cash prize of $250 at the local Irish Pub to the histarical chanting of "TURTLE!! TURTLE!! TURTLE!! TURTLE!!". Now I have funding for all my art supplies for all future projects of this sort. It actually paid for itself on the first attempt. Thank you so much. Now to decide what to be for comic-con and Halloween next year. I'll give myself plenty of time to do it right! You're the man!

Thank you so much for this series. I am not crafty and your step by step process was amazing. I basically watched your videos on replay while creating my own pumpkin. Entertaining, informative but most of all inspiring. I enjoyed the laid back approach and your sense of pacing. You can get Spar Varnish that is not glossy. I'm not sure if you can get it in matte, but you can get it in satin (close to mat, just a little bit of sheen) or semi gloss, which is shinier than satin, but not as much shine as gloss. If you can find the duller varnishes you wont need that final spray to dull down the gloss.

I am having such a great time with my pumpkins! I have one w/ the skin complete and in the drying process, and one that will get the paper clay coat on the stem tonight. S. Magal I guess I'll have to bump that one up on the priority queue then. If you need a quick fix check out Stolloween's website. He has a bunch of great little tutorials which involve neat armatures.

Leave the shiny! Makes it look almost slick like slimy. Works well with the colors, and I don't usually like a sheen like that on things, but it works really well.

They are a lot of fun to make. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. If you want to go smaller scale for more of them you can use a balloon as a starting form.

You are totally badass and pretty cute! I actually just finished a different paper mache project, which lead me to trying something different this time. Your videos are giving me lots of ideas and tips to boot! Thanks so much!
I'm definitely a cryptic nature sort of person. Waaaay back when the teachers had a bar trivia thing going which I sporadically attended I used to joke that I was usually only good for movies, geek references, some history, and 'Arcana Obscura.'
XD I tend to quote too many movies, geek references, or songs. I I also have random useless facts and extremely dark humor... Or puns. I like to watch horror films and pretend I'm from science theater 3000. Basically... I'm a complete dork.
Your amazing! When I get some money together I'm so gonna try to make some. I love Halloween and thought about buying fake pumpkins to carve but figured I'd look up diy tutorials for making my own. I'm super excited. Have a great day hun! ☺️
A true Artist!! Thanks for the great video. What's the best tool to cut paper mache? I was working on a Frosty the snowman but relized it was way too big so I'm getting ready for 2016 Halloween and making it a large Pumpkin
+William Nagel Thanks. I've had mediocre luck with knives of all shapes and sizes. A zip cut bit on a dremel with always tear through but is bad for precision. One of these days I want to try some pumpkin carving saws on it even though I know the fibers will dull the saw rapidly.
Just had SO much fun watching your videos. You are the best!!! :) thanks for the tutorial! I love Stolloween pumpkins, but I was a little afraid to try them. Yay! Weekend fun!!!!
You are incredibly talented! I was in awe through the entire series an inspired to create my own. I first found your tutorials shortly before Halloween but with the props we already had scheduled to make I was not able to start. I decided the night of halloween that I will have a haunted pumpkin patch for 2015. I just started making the armatures and paper mâché two days ago. Today I was so excited to try the paper clay that I mixed some up and started to cover a paper mâché face mask I made last year. I have not sculpted in 20 years and today I felt like a kid in a candy store letting the clay tell the story. Thank you so much for the work you do and the inspiration you have given to many. By the time halloween is here, I shall have my pumpkin army assembled for a photo to send to you. Thanks again and happy creating! P.S. I can't wait to see you do a video on how you did Hatty. That pumpkin looks absolutely amazing and now I want one to sit by my front door! Take care. socalsgrl
I'm very glad it was helpful. I'm hoping to make a idea to armature to finished product video at some point. Kind of a 'if you can imagine it, you can build it' tutorial. I'm glad the series was useful for you. :)
Thank you for the kind words ☺️ Question for you, have you ever used "CelluClay"? I picked some up at Michaels and used it for my mask application. Out of the bag, it can be mixed with water and used right away. I used your recipe for mâché paste in it. I got the texture pretty close to dry. If I would have put anymore I knew it would be too dry. But the consistency is still a tad on the sticky side. Is it the same for you when you mix up the cellulose fiber? I looked online last night and found a bag of what you use for under $13 which is much cheaper than what I used but am curious so that I know what it really should be. Thanks in advance!
socalsgrl I have never used celluclay but it seems like a 'just add water' version of paper clay with what I am guessing is a plaster base rather than the drywall joint compound. My paper clay isn't sticky at all once you get it mixed to taste. It only really adheres to itself and other paper/fibers. The only complaint I have with my stuff can be its texture since even after smoothing it still has a rough lumpy quality to it. I bought a cheap blender recently so I can try wetting down my fiber insulation and blending it before I incorporate it into a project to see if I can get a clay that is better at fine texture and preservation. I hope that answers your question, please let me know if you have further inquiries.
I went and picked up Home Depots version of the green fiber. It appears to be pretty chunky. Maybe I should hit up the thrift store on my way home today for a blender? If I do so, do you have a thought on measurements of fiber to water in the blender and maybe an idea on the method you will do it? Like maybe letting the water soak in for a few minutes first or maybe just putting the fiber and water in and just turning it on? Thanks so much for you time, thoughts and answers! Socalsgrl
socalsgrl I was thinking of adding 3 handfulls or so of the fiber insulation and then moistening it with water up to the half way mark on the blender. Fundamentally it just has to be such that there is enough water to make sure that all the fluff is being bulled through the blender on its highest setting without the blender getting damaged. I figured on running it on the highest setting for about 3 minutes or so and then pulling the pitcher off, pulling out the fibers and squeezing them dry. Then I would gauge the effectiveness of the treatment. I would probably set a small sample aside to completely dry to see if I got any appreciable particle size reduction from the raw fluff in the insulation bag. I would probably take some of the damp but mostly dry fiber mess and toss it immediately into a mache paste cook up to see if I got a smoother mix compared to raw fibers. If you try it please let me know if you think the clay comes out smoother than what you have used in the past or if the fluff comes out more fine than you find in the unblended bag.
+Joanne Gennarella Nope, I've never frozen them. I don't have that much room in my freezer to spare and it's better to just use the batch. Plus I imagine thawing would take quite a while.
Just a tip. I paint my pumpkins sold black then dry brush white primer then take acrylic orange with a little water and paint the pumpkin and the white primer absorbs the orange. I also use brown and green. PS put a little linseed oil in with your monster clay It will help with the stickiness, and I use cereal boxes for my cardboard. want to see some of mine let me know. ill send you a some pics. I have been doing this for about ten years but I have sold most of mine.
Hi Awesome video!! If you are keeping the pumpkin inside do you have to use spar varnish? Instead of spar varnish, can you use poly urethane? Thank you!!
Ok mate, you cracked me up with your humour there was no way I wasn't going to subscribe XD Aaaand...your work is absolutely AMAZING!!! I love it, well done
are there any substitutes for that green fiber? I can't find any (I live in a small town) or any alternative clay recipes that could work that don't require the fiber?
+BlackThorn1407 The fiber is the main part of the paper clay. If you can find cellulose fiber insulation under any brand you're in good shape. There are two ways around it. Get cheap toilet paper, soak it in a little bit of water until it falls apart then strain and dry it. Get newspaper and put it in a blender with some water to make a lot of newspaper milkshake which also has to be strained and dried out. Here is a video on a good one with the toilet paper method: ua-cam.com/video/uIhXlwZ6QnU/v-deo.html
What is exactly liquid starch ? I am from europe and I dont think I can find that thing ....it is a detergent but liquid for the washing machine ? ...using on clothes ?
The biggest pain is the drying time really on the paper clay and the paints. Figure about 12-13 days doing an hour or two a day. When I go for production I usually do three pumpkins at once so I don't have to wait much. Fans and ovens can speed up the process too.
That's a long time, 12-13 days. To be honest with you, seeing the time and the craftsmanship I'd buy one before making one. They're really a piece of art work.
Nah. Most of that time is drying time with no actual work involved. If everything dried instantly at the touch of a button You could have it all done in 3 days with moderate time invested. I know a few people who sell them.
So disappointed that I didn’t read comments before shopping for everything yesterday. Is green fiber that much different than using TP? Also, I can’t find what brown industrial paper is used for.... I can’t find in my home town.
Green fiber is rougher than TP and does not hold fine detail quite as well. If you are seriously sculpting then TP makes a fantastic medium. Do search for paper clay on a channel called 'ultimate paper mache' and you will get Joni's recipe which is incredible at detail work. The brown paper is most often used in institutional paper towel dispensers however you can substitute white paper towel if you need to. They give slightly different looks but a similar creepy effect.
How long would it average on the length of time to make one of your awesome pumpkins?? Wondering if I can cram one out before Halloween if I started today lol
You probably won't be able to make one this Halloween at full size. However, if you get a small balloon ( a bit bigger than water balloon size) you might just be able to get a little mini-pumpkin done in time.
Love your vids, I learned so much actually made a few pumpkins an some other stuff thanks !!!! just a question about your experience with Spar Varnish,,I would like to use some pieces in my Iguana cage, the cage will be humid an have a steam bath an waterfall area, nothing will be underwater but it will get wet alot,,do you think Spar would hold up?
I imagine it would be fine so long as the whole project was well coated in every place. Just keep an eye out for mold and if this is something the iguana will be climbing over bear in mind that their claws (depending on the size of the iguana) could scratch away your protection. I would also do a quick interwebz search or call a vet to make sure that the varnish won't have any health repercussions on your iguana. I can't imagine it would but better to do a quick check than regret later.
I can try to make something small scale to show how it was done but since I don't need to make another one I can't do a complete tutorial. I might be able to make one on 'make an armature for anything you need to create.' It will be after Halloween though. I'm a bit busy with haunt prep and work.
I haven't finished the video yet but just how heavy are those things? I'm wanting to make a pumpkin monster/golem and I wanna make sure these aren't too heavy.
It depends on the size of the pumpkin. The one pictured is perhaps 2-3 lbs. The larger you make them the more newspaper layering is needed and if you go really big then you might want to consider wire bracing or PVC struts.
Just an FYI. Moving supply stores ( such as U-haul, Public Storage, etc) will often have boxes of un printed newsprint grade paper, generally used to wrap items you don't want to waste bubble wrap on. I bought a 10 lb box of news print for pretty cheap.
Drachenfang: Sweet! Response from the site guy. Your fauxmplin tutes are a godsend as I need pumpkin men for my Halloween party. Can you add salt to your mache glue to prevent rot or does that screw with the glue properties?
No worries. I'm fortunate that I am a small time enough creator to be able to respond to things. You can add salt to your mix to buy yourself some mix preservation time. I will give you about 5 more days on paste usually and it has no significant effect on the adhesive properties.
When is clicked this video I was hesitant about how long the video was. I've made it 46 seconds and the intro got me! Well done sir!

No problem. I am the same name at gmail.com if you would like to send a picture.
Such style! Such showmanship! I've only seen a minute and twelve seconds, and I'm subscribing.
Cindy Lewis Glad you're having fun with the videos :)
Sorry for the like spam, I just spent the afternoon watching this collection and couldn’t like them at the time I was watching. Thank you so much for these videos! They are super helpful and inspiring!
No problem. I'm glad you enjoyed the series :)
I just wanted to say thank you for the videos! You've inspired me to make paper mache pumpkins and some other lil trinkets! I thought you were quite amusing, and that made for fun learning! Thank you again!! I'm very excited to get started on mine. Bright Blessings!
May your pumpkins shine brightly :)
Drachenfang I read some earlier comments and you mentioned maybe showing how to make armatures... I surely would love to see that video. ;)
S. Magal I guess I'll have to bump that one up on the priority queue then. If you need a quick fix check out Stolloween's website. He has a bunch of great little tutorials which involve neat armatures.
Drachenfang I'll definitely go check out Stolloween's site, as suggested, thank you. But I rather enjoyed your videos! See what happens when you're good, fun, and likeable?! :) I'll keep checking back with you... if you don't mind that is! I won't have time to do a pumpkin, or any other project before Halloween, so I'm in no rush. But I would love to learn more about armatures... perhaps a basic "how to" crash course for dummies, would be fantabuloussss daahhhling! Thank you kindly!
S. Magal You got it pretty lady. Give me a little time after Halloween and I'll start hammering it together :)
I love it. What would be the difference if I used toilet paper for my clay instead of the paper mulch???????
You are simply the best of what you do .....passionate very cool 😎
Thanks very much :)
You have so much natural charisma! Thanks for the tutorial!
Thanks very much for watching :)
I definitely love watching your videos. I have found that a paint mixer on the end of a drill is really good for mixing the materials as well.
That's pretty much how I mix all my stuff now. Put it in a 5 gal bucket and hit it with the paint mixer. It's nice and quick.
Drachenfang yes it really is. It's awesome. I've become addicted to these. I've made so many. After I found you ofcorse lol!
Awesome. Simply awesome! Thank you for the tutorial and the idea of using my Drexel to help cut and shape them.
You are MADE for this. What an amazing job. I'm making mine.
I'm glad you're giving it a go. Glad the videos helped :)
Leave the shiny! Makes it look almost slick like slimy. Works well with the colors, and I don't usually like a sheen like that on things, but it works really well.
I watched your videos and I just made my first one.It was an awesome expierience and a lot of fun.Thank You for Clear instructions and Great videos to learn by.
Excellent. I am very happy that the videos were helpful to you :)
Great video you have a wonderful personality and you work is amazing ! Thank you for showing this I hope to see more videos in the future from you
I livestream every few days and as soon as I get a good idea it becomes a tutorial :)
Thank you I subscribed to your UA-cam channel super happy to try this
Hi Drachenfang - hope you are well - I am watching this as I love listening to you.
Things are ok. Teaching has become vey trying with remote situations and attempts at hybrid classrooms. It's downright farcical unfortunately
@@Drachenfang Sorry - seems everyone is effected by this damn virus .
I came online for ideas so that I could make a pumpkin and Wow...I found you here. You are the Best and I love your work.
Am up to part 10 and tomorrow I am going out to buy the things I don't have handy. I will make one at least and will be able to enjoy it for years...thanks for all your work making this video...I love it.! You are such a wonderful teacher with a sense of humour and a great ability to know exactly what people will want to hear, love the way you explain every detail. So just many thanks to the best guy online. HAPPY HALLOWEEN.!
Thanks very much and I hope your pumpkins come out great. Let me know if you have any more questions as you put your together. :)
I can't wait to try these!!! I am needing a lot of pumpkins for the archway to my house and it was going to cost me a fortune. You are very entertaining to watch, I love the count Dracula voice from Sesame Street when you count the cups of water in the other video! Fingers crossed I can make these!!!
They are a lot of fun to make. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. If you want to go smaller scale for more of them you can use a balloon as a starting form.
love your videos and I have been trying to make some pumpkins using your methods so far so good and thanks for helping to learn how to make paper mache so much fun. Thanks
Thanks for watching. I'm looking forward to making this summer's videos :)
great can't wait to see them
You have the cutest personality! I laughed most of the time throughout your video as well as learned. Thank you for sharing your projects.
Glad you had fun. Happy crafting :)
So happy to find you!!! I was looking into paper mache to make an octopus and came across your channel. WOW!!! your work is amazing and I love watching your videos. I appreciate all the time youre taking in sharing your craft. I think you're so personable and just toofunny Looking forward to learning more and more as I go. Seeing your pumkins has me so psyched so not only am I working on an octopus but have started a pumkin as well.
I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. Sorry about the late reply but Halloween has had us insanely busy :)
Your pumpkins look great! You inspired me to make a pumpkin. Please make some more videos. Thanks.
+Indigo Montoya Excellent. I'm glad you embarked upon the fun journey. Next video is in production, lighted tombstones :)
Awesome video tutorials!!!!! Would love to see more videos from you on paper machete projects and using paper clay.
You sir are the best DIY-er i've ever watched! Your channel deserves more subs!! Thank you for making this video and i would really love to make one of these awesome project if i can find all the materials in Malaysia 😅
Fantastic video series. Informative, thorough, and enjoyable. Thank you!
You are a legend. Thanks for your great Paper Mache Pumpkin videos.
No problem. Thanks for watching :)
I just wanted to let you know that I think you did a excellent job with this series! It was detailed, entertaining and super cool! Also appreciated all of the tips and warnings of things to look for or avoid or how to fix if necessary! Thank you! Well done!
You're very welcome. I'm hoping to have a version 2 tutorial out eventually as well. :)
I just finished my pumpkin and wish I could show you a picture of it! Thank you for making it amazing!
I'd love to see it. I am the same name/address at gmail.com if you want to send some pictures. :)
I WILL !!! Hi!!!! Hi!!! Thank you for your reply!!
I like the manner in which you speak, and the tone and timber of your voice.
Your video is legit as well, thanks for making it!
+Hellerzauberer Glad you had fun with it. Happy pumpkining :)
ive been a fan for about a year now, but i cant remember if youve mentioned this or not, however, can ou use Glue all or does it have to be school glue?
OMG. I just came back from Lowe's, buying my joint compound & paper funk. I asked a guy where to find the pulp...we started talking about paper mache pumpkins & lo and behold...we had both watched all your videos on YT! "Drachenfang!!" And we high fived in the store like a couple of Halloween geeks!! I'm about to get busy! Super excited. Guess we won't be having mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving, cuz I'm about to put my mixer to the test! THNX!!!
That is the coolest thing I have read in a long time and it really made my day. Thanks very much for sharing that. :) I look forward to seeing pics of your creation.
You bet. Glad to share it. Small world, eh? That was too cool. How can you share pics on YT?? I didn't know that was an option.
You can't on youtube but I have the same name at gmail.com
You are totally badass and pretty cute! I actually just finished a different paper mache project, which lead me to trying something different this time. Your videos are giving me lots of ideas and tips to boot! Thanks so much!
You remind me of my old drama teacher haha
Just the way you talk is so dramatic, it's great.
Well it's gotta be fun or there's no reason to watch. I'm a science teacher though, next best thing :)
I LOVE YOUR PUMPKINS!! Thank you for sharing your expertise!!
+The Grimalkin Thanks very much. I'll have another mache series out this summer :)
+Drachenfang Sweet! I look forward to it!
Thank you so much for this. I've always loved paper mache. I'm starting to play with it again and your videos are an inspiration!!
+Pennie Layne Awesome. I am glad I could help you reignite an old spark :)
I am so excited to do this. I made my first ones last year before I saw your videos, but you, sir, are fantastic!
I'm glad you had fun. Hope the pumpkins come out great :)
You're that guy that I wish I was friends with because you get my cryptic nature and love of crafting/diy.
Awesome. I hope your pumpkins come out great :)
This time of year I always go back to your work and think about getting down with some paper mache and going crazy!
+Shannen Hewitt It's always a fun season for a little crafting. Just enough time to do a pumpkin before the big night. :)
Thanks for the reply =) I completely agree! If I manage to get the time, I'll be sure to send you some photos of the finished product!
+Shannen Hewitt Excellent. I'm looking forward to it (if you get the time :) )
Just had SO much fun watching your videos. You are the best!!! :)
thanks for the tutorial! I love Stolloween pumpkins, but I was a little afraid to try them. Yay! Weekend fun!!!!
krista Grant Awesome! I'm glad you had fun and I look forward to seeing your pumpkins. :)
Thank you for the kind words ☺️
Question for you, have you ever used "CelluClay"?
Hi = have you ever tried freezing unused clay and paste to preserve them for a longer period of time without risk of the mold forming?
WILLIAM YOUMANS , I'd like to see some pics of yours!
Thanks for the video I enjoyed watching.
Do you have a link with the full list of supplies needed? Love your work. 🧡 🎃
Thank you. Did you check the video description? Also, check the version 2 pumpkin videos for something a little easier to shape.
Hey, I just want to know how did you make the witch hat for one of the pumpkins?
Hi Awesome video!! If you are keeping the pumpkin inside do you have to use spar varnish? Instead of spar varnish, can you use poly urethane? Thank you!!
+sessionmd You can use urethane. If you're keeping it indoors then there's no big need for fancy waterproofing.
I love your videos. you,are funny. I enjoy watching and listening to you.
I'm glad you had fun and I hope the info was useful :)
Hi Drachenfang - I post you to my timeline every Halloween - Happy Halloween!
Ok mate, you cracked me up with your humour there was no way I wasn't going to subscribe XD
Aaaand...your work is absolutely AMAZING!!! I love it, well done
+irene angelucci I'm glad you had fun with it. I've been doing a lot of foam videos lately but I'll be back to mache before too long. :)
These are awesome! I can’t wait to make my own!!
They're super fun. Check out my video on the version 2 ones to make some cooler looking ones. These are the older style
are there any substitutes for that green fiber?
You can make it fairly easily: ua-cam.com/video/Q_Yk8KghfX0/v-deo.html
Drachenfang
thank you ^-^
sorin990 No problem :) I had thought I linked that into the video. I'll double check the link.
Thank you for showing us how to do this! Your Jack o lanterns are awesome. I'm going to give it a try...Thanks so much!
Intense. Add the days together and how long does it take for this one pumpkin project?
Wow! You are talented!
I seen one of your pumpkins had a witches hat. what did you use for the brim? poster board? it's thinner the cardboard.
That brim is made from a pizza hut big dinner box, all cardboard. Then I added two layers of strips and a very thin layer of mache clay.
Thanks for the fun video!

Glad to see you have many more and looking forward to watching your newer stuff.
Stay well brother!
Thanks very much. I hope you can find some fun spooky inspiration on the channel :)
Hello!! Awesome video!! Instead of spar varnish, can you use poly urethane? Thank you.
+Melanee Davis Thanks. You can definitely use polyurethane if you want to. I do reccommend spar urethane.
+Drachenfang thank you! I'm not putting mine outside. I was only able to get Matte finish not Matte spray varnish. Is there a difference?
+Melanee Davis No it's the same stuff. Clear spray finisher is always the same across the board.
+Drachenfang thank you so much!!
I actually like the shine on that one. Looks nice with the color scheme.
Those are AMAZING...I think I love you.
+Hally M Thanks much. I'm glad you like the pumpkins. I'll take all the love I can get in my somewhat isolated town. :)
I Love watching your videos, Thank you so very much
Cuttlebone1 No problem. I hope to have more coming out this summer. :)
I will,,thanks!!!!
Will you make an instructional video about how to make that paper mache witch hat? Thanks.
I can try to make something small scale to show how it was done but since I don't need to make another one I can't do a complete tutorial. I might be able to make one on 'make an armature for anything you need to create.' It will be after Halloween though. I'm a bit busy with haunt prep and work.
Drachenfang
ok thanks...
Thank u for ur creativity! Love it
Glad you're enjoying it :)
Thank you… I was able to make a huge Cinderella pumpkin for my daughter’s wedding. I’ll post a picture if I can figure out how to add it!❤️
That sounds awesome. You can always show our pumpkining community over at: facebook.com/UnhallowedHaunt
Just an FYI. Moving supply stores ( such as U-haul, Public Storage, etc) will often have boxes of un printed newsprint grade paper, generally used to wrap items you don't want to waste bubble wrap on. I bought a 10 lb box of news print for pretty cheap.
Yepper. That's a source too :)
