The Love For Toyota's 86 Is Eternal

- Опубліковано 13 лют 2017
- This week, in partnership with Toyota, we take a ride in Ron Ng’s pair of Toyota 86. Although 31 years separate Ron’s Toyotas, both cars were concocted from similar recipes intended to delivery a tasteful drive.
If you’re unfamiliar with the famous Japanese econobox tuned driver’s bargain, listen to what Ron has to say. After owning eleven classic AE 86, he’s gained an encyclopedic knowledge of the Japanese nostalgic car commonly referred to as Hachi-Roku-literally translating to “8-6.”
Ron can’t seem to shake his hankering for the AE 86. “Whether it’s the AE 86 or the new Toyota 86, they’re a blast to drive. I can't get away from it,” he says. After rebuilding six, Ron seems to be stuck with the hallmark Japanese hatchback, so he felt its modern equivalent, the new Toyota 86, would make the perfect addition.
“Driving the new Toyota 86, it definitely has the characteristics of driving the older Corolla. It’s engineered to be a driver’s car,” Ron states. Referring to his latest ‘86 GTS build and personal favorite Corolla to date, Ron admits it’s not an inherently fast car, “It's a momentum car. You always have to push it. You’ve gotta learn your brake points properly to keep your RPMs up.” So when driving Toyota's newest sportscar, Ron said "it kind of comes natural."
With the high-strung 4GE-swapped four-pot blaring, Ron wrings out his Hachi-Roku through the winding back roads of Southern California’s magnificent mountain terrain, emulating a picturesque scene torn from the pages of Japanese touge anime.
“The new 86, or the old AE 86 Corolla, both cars share an amazing driving spirit. It makes you want to go out and have fun and enjoy yourself," satisfyingly explains. That’s what it’s all about.

"Professional driver on a closed course." What a load of bullshit lol
I'd bet that Toyota was involved in the making of this video in some kind of 'silent partner' or 'creative consultant' advertising deal. I'd bet Toyota paid a large share of the production costs of this video because a brand new, on sale right now, car was also featured. Toyota probably required the phrase be inserted.
I can appreciate Toyota honoring its heritage and all, but they are way over-milking the retro-nostalgia-bromance of the old AE86 for the new 86. Which the new one should've properly included the Corolla name, like the old one did here in the USA.
Petrolicious actually does close the roads. There's a Ferrari video on their channel (the 250 gto I think) that's just all noise and driving, sort of a behind the scenes video where you can see the people at the ends of the "course" when the guy turns around.
Two guys with walky talkies at each end is not a 'closed road'
gothops154 they gotta cover their ass man. Lol
because of this kids the price of 86s have sky rocket in the last 5 years....
Power and HP addicts will never understand this. Because these cars are meant to driven not garaged.
Toyolumpia s you'll get bored with low HP after a while. Just saying.
PVNCHO s14 Not at all
PVNCHO s14 its not bad I come from high HP cars like the G35, GS400 and still find this car quite adequate for its DD needs.
I get more fun out of a corner than a straightaway when driving a car. So driving a low powered car does not bore me. Especially when I out corner better cars than the car that I am driving at the time.
PVNCHO s14 Only people like you get bored of cars that require you to make them fast. Driving isn't about the vehicle moving at a high rate of speed, it's about the driver.
We'll soon have cars that completely function autonomously. If you think that is just the best thing ever, then you are not a driver, you're a passenger.
More proof right here why Petrolicious is the BEST UA-cam channel, you never know what's coming next. I'm glad to see an 80's Japanese car, these are classics and are only going to grow as time goes on!
anyone know th e wheel and tire specs for his new car ?
awesome cars, but there has to be a beter exhaust for the GTS. Its to fartcannon like, the car deserves a better sound
You either love or hate the sound of high revving fuel injected four bangers. Personally I like their sound, but videos don't do them justice.
I'm sure the motor sounded amazing, you could kind of hear it in one shot. I wish they had more interior shots so you couldn't just hear the painful exhaust note.
Came here to say the same, nothing against the owner or the car but that exhaust sounds horrendous. I don't think it has anything to do with the engine sound, it's purely the wrong choice of exhaust, in my opinion.
Oh good. I was scared. I thought it was just me.
yup the exhaust is wrong for this car.. the Engine/intake sounds are amazing of the AE86, but this exhaust just overpowers them both.. just look at some old Best motoring clips of them racing a AE86, perfect setup with very nice exhaust..
"Professional driver on closed course. Do not attempt"
To what? Occasionally accelerate a bit?
Mikeado66 yeah I'm not sure what this guy is doing with his right foot. Can't seem to accelerate smoothly at all nor can he decide if he wants to give it gas or not. Beautiful car, it just sounds like hot garbage. Needs a better exhaust on that 4age
shhh he has a high "driving IQ" lol
Fucking this. I had to bail out after a couple of minutes cause I just couldn't stand old mates random throttle pressing. shame cause he's clearly an enthusiast, and has spent shitloads on a beautiful AE86, but I'm not sure he quite knows how to pedal it.
Yeah, these are canyons here in LA and def not closed course..lol they have to say that for liability purposes...and def NOT a pro driver lol
@@AndrewJZX he's Asian-what did you expect-by the way in from Hong Kong as well(Chinese obviously),but been in Australia for 38 years 1982 .,also are you Aussie Andrew ,since you mentioned the term OLD MATE?Thanks.
I read Toyota AE86 and I click like automatically :)

OIOI its ML!
16V > 20V any day...
NOM NOM
Why is that?
Nothing beats a 20v Silvertop/Blacktop
Muffled Eurobeat in background
How about just the exhaust and engine notes instead? Killer bees and individual throttle bodies create better music than most musicians!
Eurobeat intensifies
That transition at 5:30 though, DAAAAAAMN.
together with him saying " the new 86 or the ...transition... old 86 " :D
Jon R. They do amazing camera work and editing on this channel
Jon R. seamless. lmfao
anyone know th e wheel and tire specs for his new 86?

this is absolutely amazing. Reminds me of my younger days watching initial D. I love both of those jdm cars

@@kenlee9874 you just dont dont understand the joke...
No mention of them being used for drifting, which is probably the most recognized purpose for them? Regardless, great video as always!
Taylor Ray Never thought I'd see you hear. Love your videos.
I love this channel so much. I think I've watched almost every video at this point.
Taylor Ray same! And i do too with all your videos!
Taylor Ray this is petrolicous, the demographic here thinks that drifting is not a real motorsport..... like le mans, touring car, rallying so mentioning drifting would annoy of a lot of people........
drifting?
Favorite part,"the perfect drive would be driving the ae86 up to laguna seca driving on the track the entire day and listening to 80's jams the entire time". Now that!that sounds like an awesome weekend. Hopefully i'll see this guy at laguna seca one day!
Thank you for doing another AE86 episode! That was amazing to watch. Definitely one of your best.
Amazing sound from the AE86. I really love old school japanese cars. And his passion for the AE86 is great to hear about, he's done a really good job with it.
I drive an AE86 RHD daily in Florida. I love this extremely well done video.
6:46 You mean eurobeats?
Jirapat Thaenphromrat HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Of course he means that, he just don't found words to express his feelings
He was to tired because he was *_Running in the 90's_* you know, so when he does this he is overwhelming with *_Adrenaline_* and he is unable to express his feelings correctly
He's gone through 11 cars? That tell's me he want's something out of his Corolla's that the chassis, and frame can't provide. I understand loving the look, and wanting the best performance out of it. But you have to still understand it was designed as a daily driver, not a rally car, not a race car. You have to know the limits of the design. I've seen a lot of people put in engines the vehicle wasn't designed for, make 1/4 mile cars. After 5 years they trashed it. Because it wasn't built to handle that.
leftcoaster67 Underrated comment.
leftcoaster67 words of logic.👏
so true lol most id do to it is probably a 1jz single turbo swap and daily the shit out of it thats enough for me
In his defense, they are old cars now, 30 years old. Sometimes surprises crop up and it's easier to move on to another car. Anyone that has owned an old car can agree that repairs and upgrades can get out of hand quickly, sometimes you have to cut your losses and move on.
leftcoaster67 dude we've all bought and sold cars over the years having fun with them don't read into it too much bro
What an inspirational video. The heritage alone is exciting and I waited 25 years for the car of my dreams. I love my GT86. Driving experience is what it's all about. Hats off to you sir.
I love my GT86, and would love to one day pair it with an AE86 Trueno.
DEJA VU
I own a GT-S converted SR-5 '86 Corolla, I haven't even had the opportunity to drive yet, it's been in my possession for going on two year's now.
I bought it non-running, it sounds absolutely insane for me to say this having not driven it yet. The more I work on the car, the more time I spend with it; the more I fall in love.
It's not aesthetically straight, she's got some dings and some dents, but she's 32 years old. The 16v swap that she had was half-assed to no end, none of the wiring made any sense.
She's a long ways out, prolly another two or three years. When it's all said and done, for all intents and purposes she'll be a brand new 1986 Corolla.
Just having spent as much time as I have with mine, even non-running; the AE86 has a kind of character that seems ethereal. There truly is something very special about these cars.
There's a strange magic about them for sure.
From all channels about cars on youtube, you guys have one of the bests pictures.
They're flawless
Props to that guy. I just bought an FRS and I can see what the hype is about. I've been calling it a go cart from hell.
3:22 sometimes there's nothing more beautiful and satisfying than an old car that's been made and upgraded to look and perform better than new... look at the smooth movement of that needle...
that rite keep corolla alive I drive a 1981 corolla every day and I in joy it so much like he mentioned ...love the way it feels
3:53 Siiiick angles! Glad I still have my AE86! Great video! I had two FR-S and I keep coming back to my AE86!
that 20 valve 4A GE gives me serious Group A 4A GE vibes, such a gorgeous build, proof that it doesn’t need to have the Fujiwara wrap to still look amazing
I love the old 86 so much, I want to drive mine again, more than I want my next breath...
the sound and quality in this are out of this world
RUNNING IN THE 90'S!
What's with the fart cans on these beautiful machines?
They're not fartcans. The engine he has is a high revving engine, the exhaust he has, has nothing to do with it.
The mic used can't capture the actual note from the exhaust and therefore it sounds like a fart.
Sounds sick when you hear it driving bye from a far
He's a ricer
@Lance Yabut lmao yea aight what about yours ?
Fantastic hachiroku. Great work and thanks for sharing
That 5:32 to 5:37 GT86 to AE86 transition tho! 🙌🏼
not a corolla guy or import guy in general, but i respect this guys dedication
The prices people ask for old ae86 sprinters and truenos are ridiculous.
Overpriced for not a lot of car
in return.
agree
Indeed, the only time I've made money selling a car has been with my 86's
They're a good starting drift platform and as Mr.Regular pointed out, the Initial D fanboys made the price of them go through the roof
+nigel nuj Yup, even riced out ones are very expensive. There is an unmodified Sprinter Trueno with +100k miles (179k km to be exact) for sale in Japan and they're asking for USD23,095. The paint seems to be in bad condition, though, at least as far as I can see from the pictures. Cars in better condition can easily go for $30k. The Levin is a little cheaper at $15-20k for decent ones (not completely riced and fairly good condition) but it's still too much for over 30 year old Corollas. They are great cars no doubt but for that kind of money you could just get a used GT86/BRZ/FR-S and modify it to your liking.
I miss mine, but you do grow out of them...For the same money, you can find many other fun cars with more creature comforts and less squeaks and rattles lol
I have good memories about the AE86, I had one, I loved that car, sadly I sold it. I haven't driven the new 86 yet, but it must be as fun as the original 86
I remember riding shotgun in my friends GT-S. He drifted it and I was hooked ever since. It was frightening and rewarding at the same time.
Closed course...all those corners and not one bit of opposite lock :(
"closed course". Kind of like how the texas race videos are filmed "somewhere in mexico"
Had the notchback version. I like the stiffer body of the notch. Great handling car, Just no power with the stock motor. Had mine about 1990. Was awesome in the dirt (rally style driving)
Tofu delivery. This car is and always will be a LEGEND.
And this video is awesome and gave me chills :)
Going to the track and back and listening to the 80's... A few years ago, I was realising that the spirit of this era is gone. These days, I am realising how much they are gone and the more I ADORE that feeling of coming back in time with these cars. This is a culture that will stay alive forever in the corners of a night touge...or just cruising down the street watching that orange analog speedo and engoing them 80s.... Amen :)
Yes that is true. I realize your comments is 9 months old, but I want to add to it now. The spirit of automobiles as we knew it is over. Manual transmissions aside, the cars we will see in our future are electric cars. Yuck.
Hachi-Roku!!!! FTW
How is this channel not bigger? This content is top quality
Idk much about cars but I can tell this guy is a man of culture as well
Very nice put together doc.
Thankyou petrolucious for making this comparison! Every time someone brings up the new 86 needs more power the forget the origin of the car was that it was a well balanced machine just as its origin car was.
Hello
Great Cinematography, great journalism, great audio, great editing.
All the best Shaun of NYC
That shot with the reflection off the hairpin mirror is so beautiful
I could listen to that sound all day long
Amazing video recording. Perfect to watch.👍🏼
This is how I feel about my 99' Integra. Its not a type r but still one hell of a car and a blast to drive
Its like you guys read my mind when I commented for some more Japanese cars. Very excited about this one !
This video is great! Thanks!
Horsepower isn't always everything. I use to have a 2018 Camaro ZL1 and I oftened look back at how much I missed my 1985 MR2 and S2000.
5:34 - Excellently Developed Ideas For The Video Editing. Awesome. Makes Me Feel Good; About Thinking That The FR-S Platform Is A Viable Starting Point.
Mad editing and love the topic 🤯
Great video as usual! I like how you faded out the music in the driving scenes.
Awesome video again petrolicious!really loving the content
Awesome video !!!! I am proud to own a AE86 and a 2020 base 86
Thanks.
Yeah, I enjoyed everything in the video EXCEPT the mosquito exhaust.
i started to laugh when i heard the exhaust sound , not in a mean way , but it sounds like farts
Pepe? Is that you?
Lucky bastard...that ae86 os rare af. I wish I was born back in the 1970s maybe I would've been able to buy one of those
I found a canadian nickel in my moms car, though we live in america and no one had ever been to canada before. The coin was made in 1986, so it is destiny for me to have an 86
straight into my favorites
This video couldn't be timed better, uploaded right as I'm at the height of diving into my own AE86 resto-mod.
I introduced my friend into the car world recently and the AE86 was the first car he fell in love with.
Who would have thought that the ae86 was gonna be a cult classic icon of a car! My nephew used to own one of those in 1987. Boy I bet he wishes he have it again! Beautiful example there!
The ae86 Is one of the best handling cars
10 years of studying the handling on cars and I can tell you I love the ae86
Please let us hear more of the interior sounds next time.. i know the corolla ae86 sounds really nice with the intake/engine noise! all i can hear now is the raspy(a bit too loud) exhaust.. witch i think you recorded and put in after..
Great vid!
Showing my age. I bought a new silver gts in 1986. Still miss it to this day
ron ng in the nineties, is a new way I like to be.
No one understands this car. Agility of the car and it's track potential. The nimbleness and fun of the vehicle while maintaining its athleticism and little to no bodyroll unlike the miata. I already know how much I'm gonna be hated by friends and family if I buy this vehicle. It looks racey as hell, maybe ricey, but still a fairly slow in straights. Yet for some reason this is my dream car and has been since it was introduced as a concept in 2010 and I first used it in Gran Turismo 5 prologue before it was released. This is 8 years now and I'm 25. And hell even if I can't afford it for another 20 years, I'll be glad to get one when I'm 50 or 60 with 100k+ miles on it. And yes I know they're speaking of a turboed 86 in 2020, but I still want this one. The first attempt to revive the classic RWD natural aspirated handling monster.
OMG! That AE86 is sick af!!
Holy shit.. fucking love the video. shots and pov. is dope.. I felt like toyota should use this as thier commercial for the FRS
"Professional driver on a closed course" LOL!
One big like from owner of 2nd gen Corolla Coupe :)
ima need a link to that 80’s jams playlist
This video made me tear up a little because I knew that car will be mine one day ;)
Getting one this fall!
Maybe one day I can get a review also with my 1993 limited edition miata and my 2020 miata. But I need more money to restore the 1993 and finish the project with a rotary swap.
that ae86 looks mint!
I love this car , I have an automatic. But the wheel gap is too wide. I don't want lowering springs or coilover. I want to keep it stock but would like to close that gap a bit , what do you recommend ? I'm don't know much about cars . thanks for any input guys/gal.
Great stuff!
How many clips of him do you have for entering and closing the door?
I couldn't agree more with your statement, as Bunta himself said that 86 is the car that trains its driver
This is my dream man, have a nicely tuned ae86 200hp for some track fun and a gt86 with good tires for daily.
"I just can't believe he got that for the 86 that's amazing"
Beautiful never let's these cars go.
How do you guys capture the exhaust audio while driving? Is it just a boom mic with a wind guard?
Surprised they didn't use a mic in the engine bay to get the intake noise of the ITBs
This is so lovely.
Beautiful.
Love the ae86. When are we gonna get a Supra video? :)
I always see those "Bride" seats. I always thought it was just an Itasha thing.
finaly a hachi roku, waited so long for this! Next should be a RX7 fc, please!
I second that!
This is there second vid on the 86 platform
But yes I would like a rotary guy with some fc big turbo ports or just stick rotaries all good fun
Nicely built 4A-G blacktop. I think the GT-S VIN in the US says AE88? Is it true??
clicked right away bcos the 86
same
exhaust back pressure is real
