One of my favorite lines is honestly in a deleted scene. It sums up the character of Rose flawlessly. “Can you exchange one life for another? A caterpillar turns into a butterfly. If a mindless insect can do it, why couldn’t I? Was it any more unimaginable than the sinking of the Titanic?”
The officer who lets Cal into the boat and takes over the starboard side after Murdoch goes (and the one Murdoch salutes and who shouts, "No Will!") is absolutely Chief Officer Wilde, regardless of what the script says. Earlier in the sinking, Andrews addresses the very same actor as such when he asks, "Mr Wilde, where are the passengers?" You can see him in the background lowering a few boats, he comes into the conference at the end of the first half of the movie a little late, and he's even the one who lowers the boat with Rose in it. If you play close enough attention, you can track him (and Moody, who you can also follow through the sinking) fairly late into the sinking, where they disappear just before the funnel collapses and the focus switches to the stern. While Wilde reappears in the water with the whistle Rose ends up using, Moody was last seen clinging to a davit. Neither character was in the final scene in the Grand Staircase, and rumour has it that the actors just weren't around that day.
THANK YOU for giving Victor Garber his flowers for this role!!! Kate and Leo, sure, they're great, they're up front. But something about Garber's performance stays with me more than anyone else's. "I'm sorry I didn’t build you a stronger ship" line is usually where I start crying. 😂 Edit: about the deleted scene involving the man trying to get on the panel with Rose. That actually was filmed! That deleted scene is included with the other deleted scenes on my version of the DVD (not sure what edition it is).
So good! I wish they haf shown the Carpathia dropping off the lifeboats at White Star's pier before docking. But i think my favorite scene is passing the statue of Liberty in the rain with the simple music behind it. The statue of Liberty must have meant so much more in that moment to the passengers.
James, excellent as always and during some office meetings I "quote" Thomas Andrews when I advise upper management something is "a mathematical certainty" ...... My fav line to use during such meetings 😎
Love that you talked about the actual deck plans. I tried as a kid following the instructions Andrews gives Rose only to hit a bunch of dead ends and places that did not line up at all. Ha. I get it's a movie but they has Lynch and Marschall working on this. Ha
This is an amazing part two discussion. Really appreciate your work. And, yes, I listened to your treatment of the movie without watching. I'm so glad that you mentioned in the last scene, Rose rejoins jack and all the people who perished, so you know that she dies. Happy holidays to you and yours.
Want to go to a real party? Is up there but the moment when Rose is illuminated (literally and figuratively) and says "you unimaginable bastard." What a realization, and what a great insult while still being a classy lady. But, as a musician, the line that makes me cry no matter how many times I watch the film is "Gentlemen, it has been a privilege playing with you tonight."
I want to use this comment as a big yap session on all cool fun little things I know about the 97 film: 1. There was a scene filmed that showed Boat 6 being loaded by Lightoller during the early stages of the sinking and showed some passengers refusing to enter the boat. 2. There is alot more footage of several lifeboats being loaded and lowered, and a cut shot showing the passengers on the promenade deck reacting to lowe shooting warning shots on boat 14. 3. There was a scene in which a steerage family was shown running through the D deck reception room as it began to flood. 4. McElroy was originally supposed to take Wilde's place as mentioned, but there is evidence to show that McElroy's scenes were filmed before he was changed out for Wilde. 5. There was a cut shot showing steerage passengers trying to go up the stairs leading to the second class promenade on B deck, but were being pushed back by a steward. 6. Apparently, a scene of the Countess of Rothes at the tiller of boat 8 was filmed, but im not too sure about it. 7. I dont remember if Jack mentioned this, but you can see the Master At Arms at the stern of the ship, trying to help Helga's family stay on the ship. He is also seen falling from the stern 8. There was a scene in which Rose saw one of the dogs in the water but was cut out. 9. There is footage of boat A rowing away from the ship as the ship was making its plunge, but was cut out for time. 10. You can see Moody swim away from the ship in the movie if I am not mistaken. Okay big yap session over thanks for reading if you did!
Also unrelated but my favorite quote from the movie is one of Lewis's cut lines: "You tried to kill yourself by jumping off the titanic? All you had to do was wait two days!"
I’m also gonna say one more mistake you might have made is that Jack said he went ice fishing as a kid at the lake which would’ve been when it still existed. Don’t think I’m wrong here but could be? But either way love your witness channel been listening to every episode and love it
I will die on the "Rose is dead" hill. One thing to suggest Rose has passed at the end is the ocean debris you see in first person shooting past before the ship appears. It looks an awful lot like you're flying through a night sky full of stars. In an earlier deleted scene, it is said by Jack that a shooting star is "a soul going to heaven". Just food for thought.
The alternate ending makes me cringe so much, I have to pretend it doesn't exist out there. I'm so glad Cameron made all of the choices he made regarding cuts.
I was listening to this during the walk. I always like the part where the bartender says Titanic is going to America in 5 min. BTW James have you seen the Legend of 1900? Here is the trailer. ua-cam.com/video/2uf-LDlZMFE/v-deo.htmlsi=jK9TOdmxM02zGANx

I really REALLY like the last sentence of that line.
I would love it if you did commentary for A Night to Remember for a future episode. The best Titanic movie behind the James Cameron film!
No doubt this will happen! Likely the season finale of season 2!

This is great! You are so right! I bet there was an intention for someone to play the Purser but these lines became Wilde's. Well done!

REALLY? I would love to see it. I only remember the deleted scene surrounding the Chinese passenger.
@WitnessTitanic I tried looking for it on UA-cam but alas, had no luck! I just watched it on DVD though so I know it exists, at least somewhere. 😂
@evilpeep876 I have a rip of the deleted scenes from the bluray so I could probably upload that scene you were referring to
My favorite line is - “Reflection has changed a bit”
Yes! Love this. As a kid I didn't realize she was talking about her appearance, not that the glass was dirtier...
Favorite line from Jack: “I don’t know about you but, intend to write a strongly worded letter to the White Star Line about all of this.”
Great line!
"Heir to a railroad fortune, perhaps. New money obviously, but still a member of the club."
Deep cut! Great choice!

What a fun idea. The lifeboats being lowered again... empty this time... that's great.

Thank you. This has been a fantastic finale to a wonderful first season.
Have a merry and safe holiday/ season break. Can’t wait for season 2 in 2025!
Same to you! Thanks for listening!
Thanks to your podcast I bought Mr.Beesley's book. Keep up the good work and see you next season. Can't wait...🙏

I believe you will get your headline, Mr. Ismay
"BOAT HITS BIG ICECUBE THEN STOPS BEING A FLOATY BOATY"
An incredible choice. Love this line.

Very good point! I like it.
I might've missed you saying this, but there was a cut scene with Harold Lowe telling Bruce Ismay off at the lifeboats too.
Of course! Great scene. But no you didn't miss it, it didn't come to mind at the moment.
"Good luck to you, Rose."
Ugh. Makes me cry.

"Rose decided she wanted lavender. She knows I detest the color. So, she did it only to spite me." Yes, she was a pistol... 🫶
NOW WE'RE TALKING. That's as deep a cut as you can get. Well done!
