Final Recording from Titanic Expedition 2024
It's been over a month since the 2024 Expedition to the Titanic wreck returned to Providence, RI with 2.2 million photos, 24 hours of HD footage and so much more. In this Bonus Episode of WITNESS TITANIC, James comes to us from the final day of the expedition to share what life was like on this historic trip.
Our inquiry continues next week when we call our first female survivor to take the stand.
Welcome to WITNESS TITANIC, a podcast where we interview witnesses of the infamous Titanic disaster including modern experts, enthusiasts, and even the survivors of the sinking. Like the century-old inquiries that came before us, we may never fully determine what really happened on that cold April night but you may be surprised to find how close our efforts will bring us to Titanic herself...

11. Diana of Versailles - Titanic's Newest Survivor

Most of Titanic's lost saw their story come to an end in 1912. Diana of Versailles' story, however, was just beginning. This week, WITNESS TITANIC host James Penca dives into Diana's history, analyzes her new photographs, and recounts what it was like ...

    This is just me but if i died on that ship i would want anything about me brought up as i belong on earth not the bottom of the ocean. I would want relatives to know me and care who i was, not just my name on a piece of paper. It was wonderful to see bags and things that made those people special. LIKE THAT MAN WHO HAD THOSE PURFUME BOTTLES YOU COULD STILL SMELL. I dont want to be on the ocean floor at all. I feel they would love to have people know them and their belongs, or whats left, especially third class. Well cant wait until next episode and that woman interview. Do you believe they would really listen to a woman or a 7 year old girl like Eva Hart. She knew the ship broke in too. And all those people saying it did not break in two because they weren't there so how would they know? Love your channel and sorry i had so much to say.

    • @WitnessTitanic

      Thanks so much for the comment! I completely agree! If you look at survivors, a few of them called for the ship to be left alone when it was found in '85 because it brought back bad memories - which I totally understand. But pretty much across the board, the relatives of survivors want any artifact brought up that has a chance of telling their family story. So, as usual, time seems to heal and opinions change.

    Wow what a wonderful episode. Seeing the titantic on the screens must give you goosebumps. IT WOULD BE FOR ME. First about the song played last i know most people would not pay attention to a seven year old but Eva Hart saw that ship go down and Neerer my God to thee was playing. Plus she was in church and heard the song and ran out of the church because bad memories came to her. SO I BELIEVE HER. Then about Diana it should be brought up as it is not part of a graveyard it belonged to the ship. All people should enjoy it

      I think there is something to be said about a seven year old's testimony possibly being less effected by the trauma of the event. Her memory might be clearer?

    Maybe 855 Trent Avenue is really 855 East Tremont Avenue. Tremont is a popular avenue in the Bronx. A lot of Irish moved to that area. I just listened to the end, and found out it was indeed Tremont Avenue! Beautiful poem, by the way.

    Becky’s story reminds me of one of the best moments I’ve had surround g titanic- long story short, connected with a staff member down in the Orlando exhibit in a very similar way and it felt so amazing to be able to talk about Ismay and survivor stories and even strange things like Titanic 666 and switch/Vbreak. It just feels like a very particular tribe that people find themselves gravitate toward, often inexplicably.

    The thing that you have to remember is that nothing Ismay says in the inquiry can be taken as 100% true. I mean, who is there to argue with his accounts? The people he spoke to? If he was under that much pressure and stress he’s bound to leave out or withhold details and information wouldn’t anyone? Why he had the note in his pocket is anyone’s guess. But I think there was more to it than he let on.

    Archeologists and other professionals plunder grave sites every day, sometimes the graves are entirely deconstructed to obtain data. What makes titanic more special than Troy, Normandy, plague pits, catacombs, pyramids, air crash sites

    • @WitnessTitanic
      @WitnessTitanic 6 днів тому

      My comparison is usually Pompeii. Similar loss of life, much more horrific event, disproportionate loss of poor over rich... but since Pompeii was a long time ago, we're in the clear to dig into every inch, recover artifacts, let people buy tickets to explore the city. While it is also literally not a gravesite, it certainly resembles one more than Titanic's wreck does. But it just begs the question, how long after a disaster does it become archeology? It's all an effort of experts to study human history. Also, Titanic is the only wreck site treated with this intense protection.

    • @anthapersephone7311

      @@WitnessTitanic I think your art argument was amazing, I think we should leave Diana where she is. We can can explore these events and through time the exploration adds up to more than the sum of the event's parts. What is Diana now if no one discovered her down there. She's a good monument. In some cases archaeological digs of graves tell us about people that were literally forgotten. Im for the "plunder"

    • @WitnessTitanic
      @WitnessTitanic 6 днів тому

      I believe it was so Diana would not be recovered. Ballard does not approve of recovering artifacts, especially back in the 80s when it was more uncertain what was to happen with the artifacts. Which is fair.

Would be super into others from the perspective of other artifacts: the big piece, Honour and Glory herself, the fourth funnel (i assume a lot of imposter syndrome there) come to mind. Thanks so much for watching! Yes, the very prow of a ship is a dangerous place to be. Modern cruise ships don't even let the crew up on that forward deck unless the ship is not moving. So even in 1912, passengers would not have been allowed that far forward.

    • @WitnessTitanic
      @WitnessTitanic 5 днів тому

      This is actually up for debate. She does mention going to the bow but she isn't specific about what that means to her. She could have walked to the forward-most spot on A or B Deck (a common place to go for a 1st class passenger) and to her that's the "bow" because it's as far forward as 1st class can go and it's a great view of the prow of the ship. It is less likely that she actually walked all the way to the prow. But it is possible!

      @@WitnessTitanic well rules are made to be broken. But given the time period I’m not sure how one would have behaved in regard to a sign that said not to. I know from a perspective of a 2024 person. For sure I’d give it a go and try to get to the bow. But as a 1912 person well. I guess back then they were more inclined to obey the rules. But then again they were still human and thorough out all time there have been rule breakers.

And stare at the water and look straight ahead how big the ship would of been before the iceberg came, which it ran over, not hit on the side very much. Not a 300 foot gash in it's side. It did a little as ice was on the well deck. It tore up the bottom of the ship. That is the new info i have heard. The iceberg can be much bigger under the water.
