I've been lucky enough to see Jackson Browne live four times in my life. He's just a phenomenal performer. And yes, they usually close out the show with this medley. Also, RIP David Lindley. Cannot believe he's gone.
Before this even starts I am going to tell you that I know you are going to love this. Jackson Brown is a genius songwriter (he didn't write Stay but it blends so perfectly into The Load Out) and oh that voice.
Seen Mr. Jackson Browne three times, and what you see here is what you get. He doesn't do a lot of jamming and riffing, he wrote the song, and that is what he gives you, in the most professional way possible. This medley has been the encore closer each time I've seen him, and it ALWAYS gets a tremendous response from the audience. So sorry to hear about the passing of David Lindley, a tremendous talent, but we still have these recordings to remember him, and all the musicians by. So enjoy them.
Jackson Browne is widely regarded as one of the greatest singer-songwriters ever. He continued to impress his fans and critics with his poignant songwriting and undisputed knack for songcraft. His Masterpiece album "LATE FOR THE SKY' is considered so good that In 2020, the album was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry. Every song on that album is a jewel. A song by song (one at a time) tribute would be something to consider. Playing them one every few weeks might take a while, but it would be worth it.
a shout out to some of the finest musicians that worked with dozens of artists and played on untold hundreds of #1 songs ..... a (young) Leland Skylar, Russ Kunkle, Danny Kortchmar, Craig Doerge, and, (may he rest in peace) David Lindley ...... with a more than honorable mention to Rosemary Butler ....... thanks for the music ...... thanks for the memories .....
David Lindley on slide guitar - RIP (March 3, 2023); He has two wonderful albums, El Rayo-X in 1981 and Win This Record in 1982, but also the brilliant one Love Is Strange 2010 with JB. JB's voice is so full of color live, just fantastic; attended 2 concerts (was rarely in Central Europe or too far away).
I absolutely love your reactions, man! You offer the most legit and realistic reactions I've seen! You watch to actually enjoy and experience the songs..... not just to make more content.... with no genuine care for what you're posting. It really is refreshing watching your videos! You deserve many more followers and all the thumbs ups! 👏👍
Jackson Browne may be one of the most underrated great artist there is. You rarely hear him mentioned anymore. (The second singer sounds like Frankie Valli of the Four Seasons who originally sung that part).
Jim Gordon, the guy behind the Drum kit was on anyone's short list as one of the greatest drummers who ever lived..A famed session drummer with the LA based "Wrecking Crew" he played on well over 500 recordings..He worked almost non-stop most of the time. Sometimes recording in LA, then to Vegas, (or someplace else)for a live show on the same day..He was also Drummer for Clapton's Derek and The Dominos..Unfortunately and tragically, he was a diagnosed Schizophrenic, who slowly deteriorated mentally hearing voices in his head. Those voices told him to go to his mothers house, and kill her, which he did with a hammer and a butcher knife..That was in '83. He died in prison only 10 days after David Lindley died (Lap steel guitar here) March of '23.
I got to see this band back in the day with the woman who would become my wife (now married 43 years). I feel absolutely privileged to have seen the great David Lindley play what it felt like a few dozen stringed instruments during the show. We have also seen Jackson Browne a few other times including 2nd row center in 2012. JB always has great musicians in his band and he is a warm generous performer. Our most recent shows…including 2012…he sat in with the opening band during their set and the members of the opening band were also part of his band. Simply one of the great songwriters, musicians and performers of his generation
There's a live video performance of Browne and his band doing "Running On Empty" from around the same time, circa 1978, that showcases a rockier side and is just as impressive as this performance.
I saw JB on this tour as a 17 year old. Such a talented writer and performer. He was roommates with Glenn Frey of The Eagles back in the early 70’s (he co-wrote Take it Easy) Great memories.
I've loved this tune since it came out. I assumed it was Jackson Browne singing the male falsetto, and no idea about who was playing that guitar solo. This clears up a lot. Now I know It's David Lindley, whom I saw perform up close and personal at a small town festival in Oxford Mississippi, many years ago. I always learn something here.
I saw him in the 70's in Sacramento CA. Are seats were close to the stage in a small venue the curtains would open and Jackson was taking to Gov. Jerry Brown. Then there was a 6 or 7 year old boy running up and down the aisles it was his son by himself! Seen him 4 times great concerts.
Running On Empty was a concept album about a musician's life on the road so it makes sense to end with a song about roadies and loading out. Songs were recorded onstage or in other tour locations, e.g., hotel rooms, backstage, on the bus, etc. "Stay" was a big hit in the early 60s, so a formative influence on the band who were teens or tweens at the time. Watch/listen closely and you can hear Lindley shift from falsetto to a bass "yeah, yeah, yeah." He died about a year ago. Massively talented and one of rock's great goofballs.
I swear to God your joy with this is just so so so so so so so similar to the way I felt in junior high when this was new and I was able to go by the single. What a strange thing to have two different reactions to the same thing be so similar so many decades apart. It just kind of blows my mind.
First time seeing Jackson Browne was early 70s Paramount Seattle. Linda Ronstadt was the opening act. David Lindly was hanging off the stage playing the violin as we danced in the orchestra pit. He came back a few months later with Bonnie Raitt
This one shows how much joy and fun great songs have I feel sorry for those that cant feel music enough to be able to shed a tear and a smile at the same time Keep rockin man you get it
Saw him and Bonnie Raitt in a 1996 outdoor concert outside of Chicago. Thousands of people sitting on blankets mesmerized. Needless to say, the air had many interesting aromas!
I saw Jackson in concert in 1997, in Saratoga Springs NY, where he recorded the album (live recording) version of the song 20 years earlier. A great heart warming show.
The album version was from this performance just outside of DC. When played on the radio AM would split into separate songs while FM would play them together.
This is different audio from the album, which was recorded in '76 and released in '77, but it's very similar since he was touring with the same band. As you noted the whole performance is meant to be listened to as a single track. Some DJ's used to play just The Load Out by itself if they weren't familiar with the Running On Empty Album, and digital players and online services will often split the tracks as the album listing does label them individually. It sounds odd to hear The Load Out just cut off at the end...
This is what was so cool about the 60s and 70s. We went into Basketball arena size venues, and saw the greatest Rock and Roll Bands, and artists live in person. I must have gone to almost 50 concerts from my first in 1971 as a 15-year-old high school freshman to see "CCR," to 1989, to see Paul McCartney and Wings at age 33. In between those two concerts, I saw Santana, Led Zeppelin, Heart, George Thorogood, The J Gelis Band. BB King, and on and on. That doesn't happen anymore. And all of the music sounds the same the past 30 years. We were spoiled. We were just born at the right time I suppose. It's a different world for sure.
I'm so excited that you are doing this, Shawn. I loved this so much in junior high and I bought the single and on side A was the Load Out and then you had to flip it over really quickly to hear Stay on side B. Later I had the record album and it just goes one into the other. And this is usually how they were played on the radio as well. But as a musician who has played in bands and done some touring, this really hits home now that I am older. But somehow it really affected me as well when I was just a teen. Looking forward to this, brother!
Ya Shawn this still brings me such joy after dozens of viewings and hundreds of listens. This and Segers Turn The Page live are the 2 greatest odes to the road.
This is not actually the original version of Stay.... it was written by Maurice Williams, he was in a band called the Zodiacs more of a doo wop version actually in the 60's.
❤I saw them LIVE a little over 20 years ago, along with Tom Petty. I'd have to admit, i enjoyed Jackson Browne more. This song was the last they did, and it was emotional, and epic !
Shawn, loved your reaction to this awesome video! I’ve watched this video countless number of times and never get tired of it. BTW, saw your shirt and was wondering if you’re from Louisiana? I’m from south Louisiana but living in Vegas since my retirement in 2010.
I dated a boy back in 1980. Jackson Browne Running On Empty was the first gift he ever bought me. I married that boy.
I've been lucky enough to see Jackson Browne live four times in my life. He's just a phenomenal performer. And yes, they usually close out the show with this medley. Also, RIP David Lindley. Cannot believe he's gone.

I absolutely agree with that suggestion.

Yes - so glad to hear you mention these names we all knew and adored back then!
I teared up when David Lindley sang and played lap. Miss ya man.

Back in his early days Jackson was one of the most talented singer songwriters along with James Taylor Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Dan Fogelberg!

spent a couple years as a stage hand and bar band roadie in the 70s. this song is so special.
Pure fun.
Jackson has a certain unique soul.
Tears of Joy are the best kind! Music will do it for us; open us up to the sheer beauty.
Thanks for the great reaction! I love this performance so much! ☮️❤️😎

Love Jackson Browne. Two of my favorites are "Rosie" and "The Road"... they are both worth a listen
Your reaction is wonderful ♥️this song is absolutely amazing 🥲💖
🎉🎉😂😢😢Things that make you CRY!!!😢😢😢🎉🎉🎉

I was at this show at Merriweather. I love seeing this. So many memories. So much nostalgia. ❤

JB is awesome.

You are AWESOME my brother
Classic.
I saw this in concert in 1977 in San Diego

This is the song that ushered in the encore... "one more song". I'm lying, but it sounds like it should be.

Check out Jackson’s Before the Deluge.
I've subbed today, for your appreciation of this. Looking forward to more JB.
Please do "Fountain of Sorrow" and/or "Sky Blue and Black"
RIP David Lindley passed away 2023
Shawn, loved your reaction to this awesome video! I’ve watched this video countless number of times and never get tired of it. BTW, saw your shirt and was wondering if you’re from Louisiana? I’m from south Louisiana but living in Vegas since my retirement in 2010.
If I had money I tell you what I'd do, I'd go downtown and buy a Mercury or 2. David Lindley - Mercury blues.
Stay was originally done by Maurice and the Zodiacs, and then copied by Frankie Valli. Pairing it with The Load Out was nothing short of genius.
This is the same cut from the Album, it was on video. I believe they edited out the very beginning, warm up...
WELL THEY USED TO JUST PLAY THE SONGS SEPARATE ON THE RADIO SHAWN 😮 BECAUSE THE COMBO WAS JUST TOO LONG FOR THE RADIO! 😊
A tribute to doo op, which the Beatles killed off.
A great band on the road song. So poignant. Jackson has the chops to make that piano important.
Even you need to admit that the live version is better
