In his stand up shows, he plays his character "the pub Landlord", so beer is referenced often and he passes out drinks to the audience from time to time. He is actually rather smart and has a history degree from Oxford, so history and politics get used in a lot of his shows. His most popular videos to react to are "Name a country... We have defeated them." "Al Murray vs Americans, Funny" " Al Murrays take on the nations of the world"
You also need to realise that at the start of the 'show', Al converses with the audience, remembers their names, occupations and similar. He then refers to people throughout the show... So when he looked up to the box and asked if "being a fireman was all its cracked up to be..." - the guy was a fireman etc.

For context, Al Murray plays a pub landlord - traditionally these were men who ran a pub. They were typically strong characters who were very opinionated (in spite of not always being the brightest) on everything, had traditional views, and often very patriotic. I saw Al Murray recently and he involved all the audience. Shame i was not in a great headspace, but I still enjoyed it. Great comedian. He dashed a pint across the front row xD they were soaked!
You're heading down the rabbit hole of Al Murray! Incredibly clever guy, it takes a while to be able to disconnect his character of the pub landlord, and his real self 😂
As many have aready said here - Al Murray's stand-up show is ALWAYS played in the role of a Pub Landlord - it's a character persona he puts on to do his stage shows - that's why there's always a bar with pump-handles behind him - and also the stacked 'kegs' at the sides.
The Pub Landlord edit Murray's principal character in performance is an English publican with conservative values and an animosity towards Germans and the French; he challenges audience members to name any country before producing some plausible instance of Britain bettering it. The character has a great love of the British 1970s rock band Queen, often getting musician(s) on his show to perform one of Queen's tunes in their own style. He has described his persona as a "know-all know-nothing blowhard who knows the answer to every question even though he hasn't been asked any of them".[17] The character first appeared in 1994 during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in the show "Pub Internationale", with Harry Hill[13] and Matthew Bradstock-Smith (who played "Little Alan" as well as the keyboards in Hill's Edinburgh, radio and TV shows). The show featured the "Pub Band", with Murray playing the drums and compering. After trying out a character deemed not to have worked, at the opening show Murray suggested saying that the compere had not made it to the show and that the barman in the venue, the Pleasance Cabaret Bar, had offered to fill in. At the Edinburgh Festival,[18] Murray came up with "The Pub Landlord".[
You have never seen an old theatre it seems. They used to have private areas called boxes you could pay for in addition to the normal seats in the main part of the hall
you need to watch one of his shows from the beginning, he will "work" the audience, asking their names and jobs etc, and he will be working usually upto 20 people, remembering their names and keep coming back to them. The audience fully expect to be worked too. His character is Al Murray, the pub landlord. He also did a chat show on British Tv, based on that character, and in a fake pub.
He plays a character the pub landlord and interacts with the audience a lot that's how he knows the names and what they do for a living he has a amazing memory Please do more of Al Murray it doesn't matter what order you do them in Great reaction love from the U.K.
If you don't want to be called out, sit back in the rows. He knows the names of people in the first few rows. No he's not drunk. He's playing a character.
Part of his act is that he's the pub landlord and he always has a functional lager pump on stage along with packs of nuts. He says a gent should have a pint and the ladies should have a "fruit based beverage". He's a very smart guy with an education in history
Hi Steve & Lindsey, I have been waiting for you to watch some British comedy. There is so much for you to choose from. I saw him earlier in the year where he asked the people in the audience the normal name, job etc but also asked how they met their partner. (night clubs, pub, at work, hobbies) He then compared their answer with youngsters in the audience, berating them by using apps.
In his tv series Time Gentlemen Please he played his character but with a bit more of a backstory such as his wife having left him for a French barman taking their son with her, which gives him an irrational hatred of all things French, only for the same French barman to arrive in his pub looking for the lady in question, because she has run off with another barman. There’s also an episode where he is having an extension built on to his pub and the builder finds archeological remains so he has to stop the building work to allow the local university archeology department to dig up the entire pub garden, but the students spend most of their time in the bar , blocking the regular customers from being served. His character is also always seen wearing a red jacket which is the insignia of a landlord’s association that he is supposed to be a member of, but he is accused of breaking some rules of the association and is nearly thrown out. It was shown late at night on the ITV channel so it wasn’t as popular as it deserved to be, you should be able to find some clips or even some episodes via the internet.
My favourite is 'Britian conquers all countries in the world' or something like that. There is also Peter Kays misheard lyrics. Well worth a reaction.😂
This is his character THE PUB LANDLORD. HE had a series on TV called TIME GENTLEMEN PLEASE. Not only is he a very funny man , he is very knowledgeable about history. " you've got one in your handbag, just in case you pull". A CONDOM . I have never seen Star Wars or Star Trek movies (just the old TV series with William Shatner etc). He asks people in the audience their names and jobs and refers back to them during the show.
Al Murray plays a character which is like your traditional patriotic pub landlord. He has a bar on the stage and regularly pulls himself a pint throughout. He is brilliant at interacting with his audiences and very very sharp. He is a very clever man and a historian.
Al Murray is known as The Pub Landlord! Also was just as funny to meet in person, as I had the brief privilage of experiencing yrs ago. An extremely knowledgeable guy too!
Al as many have said is playing a character and for his character he shaves his head. He looks different when he has hair (and a beard). He is fast thinking and as far as I'm aware not drunk...the beer glass, bar, kegs are just props, being The Pub Landlord character.
He spends the first part of his shows talking to the audience, he learns their names, their jobs and where they live, and he often includes them or information about them in his jokes
Try a panel show such as Would I Lie to You or Eight Out of Ten Cats or Eight out of Ten Cats Does Countdown. The interaction between panel members is so funny.
He would get to know the people in the audience as the show progresses. He has a degree in history from Oxford, a very clever guy. "Al Murray vs Americans" and "name a country - we have defeated them" are worth watching. Also for something different have a gander at the programme "8 out of 10 cats do countdown". Hilarious
Al is an amazing performer in his stage persona as Pub Landlord. He builds his live show by interacting with members of his audience. Please react to his 'How Global Finance Works' routine
There is a comedian called Dara O'Brien and he goes along the front row talking to people. One show he got halfway along and the guy said he was a food technologist and a couple of questions later he said "I invented the Magnum ice cream". Dara then said "right the rest of you can go home".
'How global finance really works' for me is the best Al Murray skit. The other one I particularly like that's less swearing is 'name a country we have defeated them'. At the start of the show he speaks to the people in the first rows and the boxes at the side. The boxes in a theatre are usually the most expensive seats. In some theatres the boxes are almost on the stage
At last you meet The Pub Landlord - and a very British stereotype. Al is playing the part - he is a smart Oxford graduate and also does some belting history shows.
His comment re Michael Collins played by Irish Actor Liam Neesom, Michael Collins was also involved in the Irish struggle for independence in the 1920’s!
Never sit in the first few rows at a Al Murray gig, unless you want to be questioned...This skit is part of a larger gig. I would personally always try a n watch the whole gig, and you then see how Al integrates the whole thing together

As many have aready said here - Al Murray's stand-up show is ALWAYS played in the role of a Pub Landlord - it's a character persona he puts on to do his stage shows - that's why there's always a bar with pump-handles behind him - and also the stacked 'kegs' at the sides.
No going back for you now. You have to do more Al Murray. You'll thank us.🤣
The Pub Landlord
edit
Murray's principal character in performance is an English publican with conservative values and an animosity towards Germans and the French; he challenges audience members to name any country before producing some plausible instance of Britain bettering it. The character has a great love of the British 1970s rock band Queen, often getting musician(s) on his show to perform one of Queen's tunes in their own style. He has described his persona as a "know-all know-nothing blowhard who knows the answer to every question even though he hasn't been asked any of them".[17]
The character first appeared in 1994 during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in the show "Pub Internationale", with Harry Hill[13] and Matthew Bradstock-Smith (who played "Little Alan" as well as the keyboards in Hill's Edinburgh, radio and TV shows).
They are old theatres with stalls on the side, he usually askes people there names and what they do, then he rip's into them and has a laugh
you need to watch one of his shows from the beginning, he will "work" the audience, asking their names and jobs etc, and he will be working usually upto 20 people, remembering their names and keep coming back to them. The audience fully expect to be worked too. His character is Al Murray, the pub landlord. He also did a chat show on British Tv, based on that character, and in a fake pub.
"yeahhh" the women sounded so .. wretched 😂
Saw him in Brighton last week. On form .... 😂
Al Murray is from the small village I live in, he’s a thoroughly lovely bloke.
He plays a character the pub landlord and interacts with the audience a lot that's how he knows the names and what they do for a living he has a amazing memory
Please do more of Al Murray it doesn't matter what order you do them in
Great reaction love from the U.K.
Yes you must watch countries we have defeated hilarious and showing his great knowledge
You have hit onto a cracking comedian here.
If you don't want to be called out, sit back in the rows. He knows the names of people in the first few rows.
No he's not drunk. He's playing a character.
definitely watch more of his work. there is also a tv show with the same character. love your reaction.
(night clubs, pub, at work, hobbies)
He then compared their answer with youngsters in the audience, berating them by using apps.
I absolutely love your stuff - Thank you!
He is also into Astronomy and Astrophysics which he is extremely knowledgeable about.
He's also privileged and white 😂
Al Murray is not bald, it’s part of his pub landlord persona, Al interacts with his audience and remembers the names of all those he’s interacted with
I saw him live in February he’s a comedy genius and also a genius historian. Yay I love comedy reactions . You’d like Michael McIntyre
My favourite is 'Britian conquers all countries in the world' or something like that. There is also Peter Kays misheard lyrics. Well worth a reaction.😂
What a rabbit hole you've just entered...
Welcome to the brilliant Al Murray.
Try him proving that "God is British" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Al Murray is known as The Pub Landlord! Also was just as funny to meet in person, as I had the brief privilage of experiencing yrs ago. An extremely knowledgeable guy too!
He is probably the best comedian at audience interaction
He’s phenomenal at it
Al as many have said is playing a character and for his character he shaves his head.
Guys guys guys, you must do his Al Murry - Name a country... We have defeated them. sketch, its hilarious.
Try a panel show such as Would I Lie to You or Eight Out of Ten Cats or Eight out of Ten Cats Does Countdown. The interaction between panel members is so funny.
The best one is the american sketch🤣its priceless
No the best one is when his cousins Eton mate legged it 😂 Gideon 😂
May the Lord protect us from eejits. 🙏🏻
Al Murray ( The Pub Landlord) explains. global finance / The Euro Crisis & hell in different accents - are all well worth watching!
See Al on taskmaster more of his real fun personality , shines through
Its like the audience are at the pub along with Al the pub landlord and having a chin wag and a good laugh . 😊
Love Al Murray he actually looks and sounds the double of my brother
'How global finance really works' for me is the best Al Murray skit. The other one I particularly like that's less swearing is 'name a country we have defeated them'.
At the start of the show he speaks to the people in the first rows and the boxes at the side. The boxes in a theatre are usually the most expensive seats. In some theatres the boxes are almost on the stage
At last you meet The Pub Landlord - and a very British stereotype. Al is playing the part - he is a smart Oxford graduate and also does some belting history shows.
He's also a good drummer.
He is drinking alcohol free … it’s part of his act as the pub landlord
You're reaction is Brilliant
They are random audience members. He is just very intelligent and remembers the names... He is a historian and specialises in military history.
