It sort of shows off the importance of lighting. What once would look stark and bleak (looking down those long wings of cells) now looks architecturally interesting.
I used to work with some guys who were working there in its last days as a prison. A few had 20+ years service there. Apparently, its really haunted. You could hear noises from empty cells, foot steps on empty wings and bangs when no one was there. The external areas have bodies buried everywhere, and every time any work was undertaken, they found bones. Some really nasty stuff happened there, as it was the old Gaol, that was then extended over the years, to become HMP Oxford. Did you go on the tour? We did a few years back, and it was really interesting. Also, the climb up the castle mound was good. Just a shame the 70's concrete council building spoiled the view. Just down the road is Abingdon Gaol, which is now serviced apartments. Might be worth a visit?
My husband and I stayed here for my 50th birthday in a prison deluxe cell - best experience. I joke I spent my 50th in prison😂. Looking at he suite I’m so pleased we didn’t spend the extra. Totally agree the breakfast wasn’t great but enjoyed the evening meal.
Every time I see Tim come out of a door and walk towards the camera, I think "He must have to place down the camera, walk out the room, then dramatically come back in" Must look so strange from the outside 😂

A note about the toilet situation... many older prisons, this looking like one of them to be honest (although yes younger than your previous), there weren't toilets in cells. You had slop buckets to poo and wee in and at meal times would go and toss it down the communal sluice. Very grim and one of the catalysts for the Strangeways riots!
Thats so expensive! The bath, not only was it randomly placed, it was also filthy. Lacked atmosphere and so dimly lit. Menu also seemed dire. Anyway Great video and an honest review Tim. Thanks again
I feel like they were trying to do the romantic "bath in the bedroom" thing that a lot of fancier hotels do, but didn't think about the fact that the only space they had to put it wasn't romantic at all and actually just feels awkward and out-of-place
Almost every hostel I've stayed in actually had clean bathtubs and showers (except most Eastern European ones in 1994). Management should offer a discount on check-out for that (or at least a credit voucher for your next stay). £417 per night is $721 Canadian - or the total of what I paid for 3 months of accommodation in India c. 2001!

Great video as always Tim. Ive stayed heer 3 times - once in the same room as you, once in standard room and once in the prison cell rooms. I agree with you, the suite is nice but its laid out in a weird way and its noisy and TBH could be anywhere. The standard rooms are like any hotel and you may as well stay elsewhere in Oxford for a cheaper rate - BUT - I think you missed a trick by not staying in a converted cell!! As you said they took 2/3 cells and combined them to make the room and they really are very good. I remember them being so so quiet because the walls are so thick and the shutters on the windows had been specially made to fit the cell windows!! It was a very funky experience!! Dinner and drinks in the lounge area were good and I thought brekky was fine. Oh and parking anywhere in Oxford is pricy!!!!!

My 4th Grt grandfather was in that prison in the 1790s for STEALING .💰 He escaped after it had been fortified but got caught and was sent to Aus for 7 years.
@gemmabutler3552 Yeah they used A wing in this hotel. But called it G wing on the show. Epic stuff. They only stopped filming here because they were turning it into this hotel. Then they went over to a purpose built set over in Stratford where the Olympic venues are located now. So it's long gone. But it's nice the real first place still exists in hotel form.
The Oxford Castle and Prison museum next door is well worth a visit; they used to provide free access to the museum for hotel guests but I don't think that's true anymore.

10:15 yes they do have lifts in prisons, disabled people go to prison too! also my dad works as a lift engineer and has been to service a prison lift before so I can confirm it exists. but what a cool place to stay
It was ashamed the walls didn't have pictures of what the rooms looked like or jail story's for each room. i would have loved to stay there but i would have chosen a jail cell. It would have been nice to see inside a done up one. It was very interesting.

When i was a student we use to climb up Oxford Castle Mound when returning from drinking in the Oxford Union and it was still a jail then.All changed now!That pub over the road from the prison gates was then called the Queens Arms and quite a contrast from the Kings Arms in town....bit of a dump the Queens not Kings!

I can give you my review of the Randolph Hotel to tide you over until Tim does a proper job. My parents took me to the Randolph in 1962 for celebratory lunch as I had passed my 11 plus (an exam taken by 10/11 year old children to assess their education level). I wanted to order egg and chips, my favourite meal at the time, but my parents were shocked and said I should order something a bit more posh in those surroundings. The waiter overheard our exchange and said that the hotel would be very pleased to provide me with egg and chips even though it was not on the menu. I was delighted by this special attention and I can still remember how much I enjoyed that plate of egg and chips.
Prison life is an absolute luxury when it's a hotel, and yet I'm sure the feeling of being a prisoner is never too far away though. Very different to say the least. Wonderful as alwaysand very entertaining. Now I've seen the Zante and Greek videos, but have you ever been to Malta, Rhodes, Dominican Republic resorts, Tacna, and closer to home, Malgrat and Lloret de Mar, or even Sata Susanna.? Excellent places to broaden the mind and learn a bit of history along the way. Also Tim, take the family on a very cheap but very chearful package holiday with Ferris Holidays. Now that will blow your mind, but not your pocket. A big thumbs up from me, as always.
The "Prison" Hotels are definitely interesting but I agree the first one was more posh. The rooms were more cozy and charming. The elevators were worlds apart. Claustrophobic with a capital C with the 2nd one. You also seemed less than excited about the food. Great novelty hotels though. Thank you for the tour!
well done and very Interesting! Here in Boston we have a similar hotel called the Liberty Hotel. It was the former Charles St Jail. I have stayed and you get the same odd vibe. Prision bars still up and so on...
I love a Malmaison, I stay at the Leeds one alot and love the food. I think it's a reasonable slightly higher end chain but has it's own features in each place.

Watching this from the US! We have a lot of abandoned jail's and prisons but some of them are very haunted. This would be a really cool flip if someone has enough money to buy it. Also, the reason why the room price is outrageous is because of the cost of the room and the taxes of the property. I would love to check out this hotel you stayed at.

Despite the "worst rated" status, your videos on it got me curious enough to spend seven nights in The Grand Hotel. It really wasn't THAT bad, and as I walked around the building, I could smell fresh paint. Always a positive sign!
Hi Tim I enjoyed ur Norfolk broads mini break it certainly brought memories back to me it was one of my most enjoyable holiday & I went back every year tried different boats the one thing I can say I never ever got fed up with it we had such a brilliant time .
I agree Tim upstairs the Prison did feel less oppressive & the Purple Lights & Cosy Sofa Chairs made it feel quite cosy. It did feel very much like a Prison especially with the Spikes on the Windows in your Room. I didn't like the Low Bed or the Bedroom being downstairs. Like you said i think one of the upstairs rooms would have been nice! I liked the look of the Restaurant with all the Prison Doors. Actually is it similar to Bodmin Jail. The food looked nice. But I remember in Bodmin Jail you had a really nice Breakfast with Gaby & Casper. And your room in Bodmin Jail was much nicer classier & cosy looking. So for me Bodmin Jail was the Winner 🏆 A very interesting place & in Oxford, one of my favourite places. Hope you had some time to have a mooch about in Oxford too Tim!😊.

I was watching this video in a hotel in Southampton over noisy neighbours so annoying. That dinner looked scrumptious and overall found the hotel to be enticingly bizzare . The suite was a bit of a jumble tbh. Shame about the bath and that room with the table and TV looked oddly misplaced. Would love to visit Oxford so would consider this out of curiosity.
We have stayed in both Bodmin jail, and the malmaison in Oxford. The Bodmin Jail was so much better. We stayed in the main wing in Malmaison the shower pressure was dire, the Bodmin Jail just seemed to do everything a lot better
Clearly, you missed the 06:00 to 06:30 'warm shower' period that was included in a standard tariff [sentence] - actually quite common in prisons, I believe! Inmates in Bodmin were clearly far too gently treated - refreshingly cool gruel and spring water while spending contemplative day's breaking stones or idly turning 'the crank' to keep themselves fit? What on earth did they have to complain about?
I know what you mean regarding noises from other rooms. The amount of times people in the rooms above me seem to be playing bowls with giant ball bearings all bloody night is too often to number!! And on a different matter I noticed a couple of very brief glimpses of the late 11th century St George's Tower, Oxford's second oldest building and subsequently part of the prison complex.
i would love to stay at the famous pentridge prison in Melbourne victoria Australia. they have just made it into a hotel called the interlude. it looks so luxurious and has in the basememt a pool that they put candles around it and you get a private swim experience with a cheese board and wine. very very creepy but would definitely be an experience
Really interesting how popular towel heaters are there! I've never seen one in the US. Here in California the overhead heat lamps in/just outside showers are very popular. When I lived in Canada, the bathrooms often had extra little room heaters you could set on a timer. Very cool how it's different place to place!!
Malmaison is a chain of hotels. I stayed at the Birmingham (West Midlands) one(not a prison hotel) and I expected more to be honest, as its meant to be luxury.

Really cool place to review. I’m interested in prison history so would be a fun place to go. I’m kind of shocked by the price though, to be honest. I don’t mind paying when a place is really nice & great food, as well as service, but considering the walls were thin & you got woken a lot, plus the extra you had to pay for meal/drink etc & disappointing breakfast, I think it was overall a bit expensive. I remember going to Oxford a few years ago and looking inside from the castle tour next door.
I was there in 1978...on my way to borstal. It looks a bit more inviting now.

I can give you my review of the Randolph Hotel to tide you over until Tim does a proper job.
My parents took me to the Randolph in 1962 for celebratory lunch as I had passed my 11 plus (an exam taken by 10/11 year old children to assess their education level). I wanted to order egg and chips, my favourite meal at the time, but my parents were shocked and said I should order something a bit more posh in those surroundings. The waiter overheard our exchange and said that the hotel would be very pleased to provide me with egg and chips even though it was not on the menu. I was delighted by this special attention and I can still remember how much I enjoyed that plate of egg and chips.
Prison life is an absolute luxury when it's a hotel, and yet I'm sure the feeling of being a prisoner is never too far away though. Very different to say the least. Wonderful as alwaysand very entertaining. Now I've seen the Zante and Greek videos, but have you ever been to Malta, Rhodes, Dominican Republic resorts, Tacna, and closer to home, Malgrat and Lloret de Mar, or even Sata Susanna.? Excellent places to broaden the mind and learn a bit of history along the way. Also Tim, take the family on a very cheap but very chearful package holiday with Ferris Holidays. Now that will blow your mind, but not your pocket. A big thumbs up from me, as always.
The "Prison" Hotels are definitely interesting but I agree the first one was more posh. The rooms were more cozy and charming. The elevators were worlds apart. Claustrophobic with a capital C with the 2nd one. You also seemed less than excited about the food. Great novelty hotels though. Thank you for the tour!
You’d think the prison hotel shower would have the soap on the floor as a joke
Actually now, most prisons are using powdered soap because it takes longer to pick up.

well done and very Interesting! Here in Boston we have a similar hotel called the Liberty Hotel. It was the former Charles St Jail. I have stayed and you get the same odd vibe. Prision bars still up and so on...
I love a Malmaison, I stay at the Leeds one alot and love the food. I think it's a reasonable slightly higher end chain but has it's own features in each place.

Watching this from the US! We have a lot of abandoned jail's and prisons but some of them are very haunted. This would be a really cool flip if someone has enough money to buy it. Also, the reason why the room price is outrageous is because of the cost of the room and the taxes of the property. I would love to check out this hotel you stayed at.

Oh I got goosebumps ...dont think I'd fancy staying there...visited Peterhead jail as it is a museum.noticed they supplied arran aromatics in bathroom etc.nice quality touch..anyway Tim interesting.thanks👍🍷

I've just this evening returned home from Scarborough. Despite the "worst rated" status, your videos on it got me curious enough to spend seven nights in The Grand Hotel.
It really wasn't THAT bad, and as I walked around the building, I could smell fresh paint. Always a positive sign!
Hi Tim I enjoyed ur Norfolk broads mini break it certainly brought memories back to me it was one of my most enjoyable holiday & I went back every year tried different boats the one thing I can say I never ever got fed up with it we had such a brilliant time .

I agree Tim upstairs the Prison did feel less oppressive & the Purple Lights & Cosy Sofa Chairs made it feel quite cosy.
It did feel very much like a Prison especially with the Spikes on the Windows in your Room.
I didn't like the Low Bed or the Bedroom being downstairs.
Like you said i think one of the upstairs rooms would have been nice!
I liked the look of the Restaurant with all the Prison Doors.
Actually is it similar to Bodmin Jail.
The food looked nice.
But I remember in Bodmin Jail you had a really nice Breakfast with Gaby & Casper.
And your room in Bodmin Jail was much nicer classier & cosy looking.
So for me Bodmin Jail was the Winner 🏆

Interesting to hear what you say about thin hotel walls and noise. I was watching this video in a hotel in Southampton over noisy neighbours so annoying.
That dinner looked scrumptious and overall found the hotel to be enticingly bizzare . The suite was a bit of a jumble tbh. Shame about the bath and that room with the table and TV looked oddly misplaced. Would love to visit Oxford so would consider this out of curiosity.

We have stayed in both Bodmin jail, and the malmaison in Oxford. The Bodmin Jail was so much better. We stayed in the main wing in Malmaison the shower pressure was dire, the Bodmin Jail just seemed to do everything a lot better
Clearly, you missed the 06:00 to 06:30 'warm shower' period that was included in a standard tariff [sentence] - actually quite common in prisons, I believe! Inmates in Bodmin were clearly far too gently treated - refreshingly cool gruel and spring water while spending contemplative day's breaking stones or idly turning 'the crank' to keep themselves fit? What on earth did they have to complain about?
I know what you mean regarding noises from other rooms. The amount of times people in the rooms above me seem to be playing bowls with giant ball bearings all bloody night is too often to number!!
And on a different matter I noticed a couple of very brief glimpses of the late 11th century St George's Tower, Oxford's second oldest
building and subsequently part of the prison complex.

i would love to stay at the famous pentridge prison in Melbourne victoria Australia. they have just made it into a hotel called the interlude. it looks so luxurious and has in the basememt a pool that they put candles around it and you get a private swim experience with a cheese board and wine. very very creepy but would definitely be an experience
Really interesting how popular towel heaters are there! I've never seen one in the US. Here in California the overhead heat lamps in/just outside showers are very popular. When I lived in Canada, the bathrooms often had extra little room heaters you could set on a timer. Very cool how it's different place to place!!
The cost to customize the entire building and bring it up to code and poshness; inconceivable. Someone had WAY too much money to burn.
Malmaison is a chain of hotels. I stayed at the Birmingham (West Midlands) one(not a prison hotel) and I expected more to be honest, as its meant to be luxury.
I sure was thinking about that, too.

We've stayed in quite a few Malmaisons. The bath outside of the bathroom is a signature of theirs; makes it a feature.

Hello Tim, this was interesting to see,how the old prison used to be and now converted to rooms.the dinner looked great.i thought the the car park might have been in with the room.money for the night isn't too bad.
I have only one question: why? Why did anyone think it is a good idea to have such a hotel? Why would anyone want to go there? There are so many lovely places in this world to visit …. prison is not one of those.
I wouldn't mind staying in a hotel like that. For some reason the characters from the TV series Porridge kept appearing in my mind for much of this video. Well done on reaching 400k subscribers Tim.

Really cool place to review. I’m interested in prison history so would be a fun place to go. I’m kind of shocked by the price though, to be honest. I don’t mind paying when a place is really nice & great food, as well as service, but considering the walls were thin & you got woken a lot, plus the extra you had to pay for meal/drink etc & disappointing breakfast, I think it was overall a bit expensive. It was enjoyable to watch though, thanks Tim👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😊
P.S £35 for parking…are they having a laugh!😂 (ridiculous)
