I think I would prefer to stay in the Villa Bella in Margate rather than this… Even with the risk of bricks smashing through the window!
Stayed 2 nights this week on a coach trip i was excited to see what all the fuss was about but me and my wife were pleasantly surprised yes room was dated but so what sink toilet bath all worked .The hotel has great historical features if you dont like those kind of things stay at a travellodge overall we would stay there again

Back in the day, and I’m talking decade’s ago, this would have been a world class hotel. It’s a pity really. Im from Liverpool and this hotel is just a stain on our city. Sad really.

Even 20 years ago when i was coming Over to alder hey with my son, this hotel was still a nice place to come for a brew in the beautiful main hall. The Down stairs loos were immaculate . I’m so sad to see what it’s become . It’s heartbreaking what Britannia have done to fabulous hotels across Britain

I stayed there for a four-day event in 1998. It was sub-par even then. My bill was paid by my employer I'm glad to say. Had I been paying the bill myself, I would not have been happy.
@@WalkWithMeTimI’m pretty sure this was a nicer place to stay back in 1912. It looks quite nice to my pick for worst hotel in the UK Henrietta House in Bath, £300 a night to stay in a room that smelt of sewage, nice! If you do go ask for a room in the annex, it’s doesn’t get any worse than this.
Britannia has a strange business model buying grand old hotels that are expensive to maintain but running them as budget hotels.
My Dad worked there in the 1950’s. He refused entry to Errol Flynn when he tried to get into the Louis IV restaurant because he didn’t have a tie on.
Didn't they do a TV reality show about this hotel years ago?

I stayed here a lot in the 80s and 90s. I was very young and probably not that discerning, but I loved it. What a shame Britannia is not looking after it.

When I was a little girl in the 1950s my mother used to take me shopping in town. We used to walk past the Adelphi to catch the bus around the corner where the entire area to the right had been razed to the ground by WW2 bombing. The Adelphi was the most glamorous hotel in Liverpool and I saw ladies wearing the most fashionable clothes such as silver mink coats (ugh) remember we are post war and clothes were expensive and hard to get. I told my mother that when I grew up I would stay at the Adelphi. My mother has passed and I am old and disabled and still have never been inside. In spite of your critique, I would jump at the chance to stay just one night before the owners run it into the ground.

When I was a student at Liverpool in the 1960s we would sometimes treat ourselves to coffee in the Adelphi - it came in a silver pot and cost each of us half a crown (Coffee in the Students' Union cost sixpence)
The Bathroom looks like the kind of place a serial killer would dispose of his victims.
At rates of £43 they will never make enough money to maintain this grand old hotel to high enough standard
But if it was maintained to a high standard, they could get a lot more than £43 per night.

God, the wrath of Britannia Hotels ruining all these beautiful buildings :( I'd looooove to see this completely restored and refurbished. The main big rooms are just stunning.

The common theme with Britannia Hotels is the ornate ground floor public areas contrasting badly with hotel rooms and other areas that are badly in need of TLC. I don't know what the occupancy rate is, but it occurs to me that it would make sense to close off some floors and spend money on getting the floors they do use up to standard. The reputation they have now would be reversed and in time they would need to reopen floors - after they've also been renovated of course.
The receptionist guessed who you are and put you in ‘Room 101’. She was having a laugh.

Notice Gabby and Thumps didn't volunteer for this mission. That toilet was disgusting. That caution wet floor sign indicates either it was recently cleaned, but they never bothered to empty the bins, or worse, that sign is from days ago and the toilets aren't cleaned on a regular basis.
Or more likely someone pissed all over the floor and they couldn't be bothered to clean it, so just whacked a wet floor sign there!

It's a shame these older hotels are not well maintained because they beat the hell of the modern completely generic shit.
It might be that the modern generic style is just much cheaper and practical to maintain-I can't begin to imagine the costs required to completely refurbish the Adelphi! 😅
I’d imagine that would come at a huge loss to sustain a grange large hotel to the standards it once was & would not be financially viable for any owner. Only one who had money to lose & a passion for history

The Titanic was registered in Liverpool but she never came to the city. But it seems like she's the only one of the old liners that people remember.

I worked in the Adelphi as a chamber maid years ago as a chambermaid , the mattresses had lots of stains on the towels were thin and grubby we had 10 minutes to clean each room which was not possible so I was always late going home and they didn’t pay overtime AT ALL do not ever drink out of the glasses they are wiped out with a towel don’t say I DIDNT WARN YOU !!

It's possible that the weed smell is coming from the hydraulics for the lift. It's caused by the oil returning back to the tank, which is vented to the atmosphere. I work in a hospital that has the same issue 😅
Or it's just people smoking weed in the hotel.

FYI, the damage on the bathroom wall is from leaking pipes. That's what's known as a wet wall. All hotels leak due to having so much plumbing, old hotels leak a lot and are full of mold. The only way to reasonably renovate an old building and keep the exterior, would be to completely gut it. It's too far gone for simple repair and patch. I've been involved with a bunch of similar old hotels in NYC in my old paint sales.en past. One of the ways old 5 stars keep in operation is to shut down individual floors and/or sections to gut while keeping everything else open. If you don't remove all the old plumbing and windows, you're just putting a bandage in an arterial bleed.

I suppose is the point is they weren't meant to last 100 years - anything after the first successful years of business becomes "somebody else's problem."
@@thisperson5294They were built to last, but everything wears out over time and needs a refurbish. There are plenty of far older buildings in service today.

Excellent Vlog. I work for the railway and worked at Lime st station for 20 years before moving on to another railway job 10 years ago but there is a service tunnel that led from Lime st station to the Adelphi Hotel. I know it was Blocked off at the Lime st end back in the mid to late 80s. I was told it was only blocked off the Lime st end and the Adelphi use there’s for storage. I was hoping you kept looking in the Basement and found it.

What an absolutely stunning hotel. You can see how grand it would have been. They don't make buildings like this anymore so its a shame to see it like this. However i can imagine its extremely expensive to maintain a building so large.

If they would redo the hotel they would be able to charge more!! Then they could hire people who take pride in their work!! My dad always said no matter what job you have do it to the best of your ability always!!

This is such a shame, it is a beautiful hotel but being a Britannia Hotel it will just get worse. The hotel needs millions of pounds spent on it and I am afraid it is doomed

It's a shame with such amazing historical links to the Titanic more suitable developers don't invest. Maybe it's the economy or the location.
Seems like they could sell some of the marble and heavy furniture and try to paint and update the place.
Make them clean and paint the place since their coming over there and sucking off your system.

As Tim mentioned, The Adelphi had a tv series for a few seasons back in the day. I remember the Manager lass. I used to do shop refits with a team and we actually stayed in one of the basement roo me with no windows!
You're right about it being like a time capsule, i could almost hear the echoes from the hotel's past. It looks spooky and has loads of atmosphere. Good video and review.

As a coach driver I have taken loads of groups there a long time ago and its such a shame it could be up with the top London big hotels just needs cleaning and investment.
I live in southwestern British Columbia, just outside of Vancouver. We have all heavy furniture (china cabinets, dressers, chest of drawers etc.) bolted to the wall with brackets. It stops kids from pulling them onto themselves, but more importantly, because we are on the fault line and do get earthquakes it covers us with earthquake insurance.

I had my wedding reception here, it was great! But then again, that was 1985! It was dated then!!!
I think the issue being it would require so much money spent on it, it would be into the Millions of Pounds. If someone was willing to spend that kind of money would it be busy enough to pay off such a large investment. Plus can you just begin to imagine the day to day running costs of running such a large hotel.. but in the other hand i absolutely love the old building with original furniture. Not only that but something as simple as replacing the windows, they would have issues being a listed building.. it’s such a shame.
I used to work there Tim back in the late nineties! It’s has really changed since then!! It’s a huge hotel and know it well. I worked there just after it was on TV many moons ago and as I used to go out of the kitchen door in to the restaurant there was a sign on the door saying “smile you’re on camera!”
It was good fun back then and sad to see it like this especially in such a central location in Liverpool.

I worked in another hotel in the early 2000's which was taken over by Britannia whilst I was there. Some of the staff and managers from the Adelphi who also featured in the documentary were sent to our hotel to show us the Britannia way, and generally kick us into shape! Even the owner Alex Langsam was a regular. 😂 Alot of fun looking back though, many stories of and a great life experience for your first job. It's definitely a unique company!

I went to a Xmas party there in 1999 and me and my mates were dancing with a couple of barmen, mine was a fit French fella called Cedric (what a name) and we were boogying to Mi Chico Latino and Mambo Number 5 when Eileen came on the bounce and told them to stop fraternising with guests!
That establishment is giving The Shining/Winchester mansion vibes. Wow, what a place! Was hoping to see the ghost of Churchill. The Titanic Replica room is extraordinary.
the emptiness reminded me of that hotel in the Grand Budapest Hotel film, though that was kept in better nick. Highly recommended film btw.
It really is grande and has so much potential. The replica of the Titanic room, the lobby area, just the endless marble and brass railings, on and on, all has the potential to a real destination hotel.

Some of the rooms like in the lobby and the smoking room are just so beautiful. The hotel is just so massive it must be very hard to keep up with all the upkeep.
But those special rooms are just so beautiful. If I were to come for a visit to the UK I might even brave booking a night there even if my room was very shabby, just to get a chance to look in the titanic room and the lobby areas. It’s like a museum.

To stay in such a hotel for £50 sum is a good deal. A normal road-side hotel in the states with only the basics is $100+.
Premier Inn at the M57/M62 junction is abou £47 depending on when you book. If you want it for tonight, it is £68.
Inside, it will be typical Premier Inn quality, outside it is an industrial estate next to a motorway. It will be very much targeted at business travellers rather than tourists.
Loved it. The worst hotels are always the grandest in architecture. Please do more of them Tim.

I could speculate about what the late Baron Wilson of Rievaulx got up to in there, but I'd better not.
I assume it's listed, which prevents it being turned into the apartments that people actually want.

I would be very ticked off if I was going to stay somewhere for four days and have no heat and no television. And with it being an old hotel I doubt there’s an Internet. No television, no problem. No heating, definitely problem. I did see multiple UniFi WiFi access points in the video...as to if they work is a different story.
Cheers for this video Tim. I’ve seen your previous one about the Adelphi and many others. I actually stayed there last month from the ninth through the twelfth of February in room 678. There was some flaking paint and the whole unmovable window. Other than that, it was ok given the price paid. I’m like you - The experience of staying and exploring these hotels of a bygone era is a pastime of mine. Please keep the vids coming.

Sometimes it is better to close down than have such hazardous (mold, wet, stains etc) rooms and risk the health from people and also children

@WalkWithMeTim Sad when you think Charles Dickens stayed there numerous times when visiting our City, also Sammy Davis JR and Frank Sinatra have stayed there. Really bad to see it today like that. Hints of the former grandeur but you can only paper over the cracks so much.

I remember the year of the bombscare at The Grand National at Aintree which meant the race had to be run the next day. Jockies, fans all had to find an extra day's accomodation. What did the Adelphi do? They raised their prices astronomically. Some people were paying 300 pounds for a mattress on the floor! Absolutely outrageous!

Glad you give places you visited a second look. Hotel is kind of spooky. 21:50. I swear I can hear voices from the creaky door. Also walking in a grand room while hearing music and crowd in the distance, then coming upon a few or no people gives that haunted ghost ship feel from the movies.
Evening Tim, great vlog. Its such a shame that hotels like that one has so much history and very grand and beautiful is left not look after, ive never stay there my self , but its still looks dirty in places, places like that don't have the money for the upkeep and hotel is so large to keep . Only had a room 101 once. Sadly it was our wedding night and it lived up to all the stereotypes of its number. Only good thing was we complained and got a free dinner after our honeymoon.

The cost to just heat this hotel and electrical cost must be massive x
And potentially all old light bulbs everywhere. Using modern LED lights would reduce the electricity bill significantly

Back in 1966 when I was a student at the Liverpool College of Art I got into conversation with one of our life models ( a very cuddly lady with a filthy sense of humour). She said she also worked part time as a waitress at the Adelphi. The kitchens were in the basement and the waiting on staff had to climb a flight of stone steps to get to the restaurant. They quickly learned not to touch the walls or handrails as they were covered in years of accumulated grease and filth. She said it was like tar. That was 58 years ago the Adelphi has clearly been declining for a very long time.

A good few years ago, at one of the Mathew Street festivals, me and my sister went into the Adelphi to have a coffee. Before we left, we decided to have a wander around the hotel, basically to have a look to see, if we could see any of the original features of bygone days. Well we ended up going in and out of rooms we shouldn't have, we actually tried a few bedroom doors that you would have imagined should have been locked, but they were not, we went into meeting rooms, there was actually a meeting going on in one of them. Anyway, not once were we challenged by a member of staff, no one asked us if we were staying there, nothing. After about a hour of looking around, we decided to leave the hotel, I got some really good pictures of period furniture, also pics of the rooms, we shouldn't of been in. I would never ever stay there. I was born and bred in Liverpool and growing up, The Adelphi was THE hotel to stay in. Unfortunately, it's now a Sh 1 t hole, a blight on the Liverpool Landscape.

It's an impressive building! I just looked up its history and discovered that it was originally built in 1862. The main areas are stunning , I have stayed in Britannia Hotels before the rate reflects what you get, I don't get the negativity on Tripadvisor you get what you pay for !! 😆
If they make a British based "Shining" film, this is the location. I actually stayed here a few times in the 80’s when it was the ‘digs’ for quite a few of the ‘Brookside’ cast. The grandeur was starting to fade a bit back then, but it’s very sad to see what it looks like now.

Excellent!!! this is more like it - digging the dirt on the Worst Rated Hotels. I still think that even though you say you`re getting recognised, i dont think thats a bad thing. In this instance it appears it lead to a room upgrade, but you were still able to walkabout the hotel, films things they might not like to be reminded of and even note things in the upgraded room which were not quite right. It also puts the Hotel on their toes because they know you have come there specifically to film the room, the hotel, the service and the food. They slip up in any of these then its on UA-cam for all to see...
And highlighting that car park was a good idea too - i would like to wonder where the money for the car park is being spent because its certainly not back on the parking area!

NB: I have a suggestion - recently we had two films from Claridge's Hotel in London which is fine, but i do wonder that when you and Gaby go someplace together, rather than editing and uploading two rather similar films could you not edit the material together into one film? You can still upload a joint film on both channels and provide links to each other channels but i did wonder if it might save you some time putting it into one film. Yes you show two different perspectives in separate films but you would still get that if it was edited into one... I might be wrong but i thought i would suggest it...

I've said in another video (about one of the most luxurious hotels I think) that old doesn't have to be bad provided that the upkeep is up to par.
That living room does look quite nice. Room price of the suite wasn't bad at all tbh

It’s a shame to see these formerly grand places fall into a spiral of neglect. But good on you for giving them a second chance and a fair review.
I stayed there in the early 1980s and it was awful then too. It is incredibly grand in scale, built initially to house first class passengers on Cunard transatlantic liners, and my room had once been magnificent, like those in the video. It had, among other things, the largest bath I’ve ever seen. But even by about 1983 it was plainly collapsing - hopeless staff, badly maintained public areas, and largely empty apart from a large brothel on the top floor.
Wow it looks like it would have been beautiful at one point. The chandeliers and the marble. You could imagine what it was like when it was first built. I don't know why someone doesn't buy it and do it up. It's so central. They could make a mint. It is worth going just to see that reception room. It looked like an experience of being on the Titanic.
There's something so creepy about this hotel, a sort of unexplainable darkness that has settled within the winding, dimly-lit halls and mysterious doors. Ominous yet intriguing. Once again, great video, Tim, I love the variety on this channel! :)

This hotel most have been amazing years and years ago, so grand but unfortunately it is so grubby and run down now, typical of Brittania hotels. Such a shame these beautiful buildings can't be properly restored to their former glory.
Say hello to the Adams Family for me!You are lucky to have found the lifts working as when I stayed there there some of the lifts were out of order making it quicker, healthier too!, to use the stairs .
