Bought this today and have to say I’m extremely happy with it. The auto feed is a dream and loading line is so easy. Also the rapid charger charges the 5ah battery in 40 minutes, yet I did my entire front yard and also the neighbours front yard and never ran out of juice
I recently purchased this weed eater today. Whooooaaa! This is one powerful trimmer. I consider it to be light weight because the weight balance is excellent. I'm 5' 10" and it's adjustable length is a great feature. The power is second to none. The one thing I need to adjust to is it also eats the nylon line quickly if you don't adjust to the power. I used it to edge my driveway and sidewalks and bumping up against the cement chomped up the nylon line. So I will need to adjust and slow the speed down when edging. As far as normal weed whacking goes, the EGO really nailed it. In addition, feeding new line in is super easy and the Line IQ works well. My old battery powered weed whacker from Ryobi had good power but bumping the head against the ground to feed line was flat out frustrating - constantly jamming. The EGO Line IQ solves that problem and the powered line feed is amazing. So easy! Once I adjusted to the advanced features I was off and running. This is the most power and easy to use weed whacker on the market and there's nothing close.
Aside from the convenience of the Line-IQ, I like that the string is lower to the ground. On my current trimmer, with the head level to the ground, the holes where the string comes out of the head are over two inches off the ground. If I want to cut the grass low, I have to tilt the trimmer a lot to get the string down that far.

Great review. You convinced me. I went out and got one. The deciding factor was the auto-feeder vs bump feeder. As for the weight I will consider getting a shoulder strap.
Fantastic review that covers all the important differences with this model. I’ve been curious about this auto advance for some time. Now I’m less curious but still not sold… lots of convenience with important to understand trade offs. How the product interfaces with bodies near the size of yours is invaluable. Gimmick. I'm a commercial lawncare guy. Didn't take long for sensor to not work properly. Trimming around pond and string wouldn't feed properly took around 5 minutes for it to kick out more string. Did it twice. Also like the reviewer says when the string does kick out you could damage something. Power is excellent and even though it's line IQ I wish you could bump head also. I called EGO and asked if I could put the bump head on it because I did like the trimmer they said no has to run with IQ head. I took it back to Lowes after 10 days and got the regular bump head Ego trimmer
Mine never bound up on me, but I ended up selling it to my neighbor after just a few months due to the height ergonomics I mentioned. Longevity of the auto feed mechanism was a bit of a concern for me too. I bought the G2 power head with the Powerload string trimmer attachment this year. Thanks for the review. I would think the solution for your experience with wood damage caused by the auto advancing string would be to get used to the 16" trimmer width, then always assume that is the width you will have and keep your clearance around wood based on that assumption. The biggest challenge for me will be the additional $80, but with this review explaining the 4.0 amp hour battery vs the next lower models 2.5 amp hour, I think this new model is my choice because I absolutely hate the need to continuously bump feed. My height is 6' so probably not an issue for me on the angle difference, but my wife at 5'2" will possible one day face that challenge. In any case, your review here is so complete, I would give you additional likes if possible, I have however just subscribed to your channel just due to this review. Thanks again...
I went with this product because I can't stand the bump feed - can't do it on soft grass and it constantly jams. Frustrating as hell. This magically solves the problem. The Line IQ feature does take some getting used to. I wish it had a button that triggered the line feed because it's a bit unnerving at first when the line suddenly bursts out 2 inches. However, and its a BIG however, it is much better than the typical 'bump' weed whackers we've all been programmed to using (and super frustrating as they all jam regularly). Loading new line into this unit is so easy. EGO clearly built a better 'mouse trap' with this product. It's innovative and they nailed the solution to all the annoyances and frustrations of all other weed whackers.

I'm also oddly confused as to whether the edger is just an attachment for another tool, or if it's an entirely separate whole tool. Thanks so much for your time and effort on these videos.
I have the edger attachment, and do eventually plan to review it. As far as I know, it's only available as an attachment for their power heads. My take on it (so far) is that it's nice to have, but not necessary. It does get the soil and grass back a nice even distance from the edge of your pavement. But I used it a few times in the spring after I got it this year, and haven't used it again all summer. I just maintain the edges of the lawn by flipping my string trimmer on its side. That being said, the edger is really nice for establishing a very clean edge a few times a season.
@@DoresoomReviews Thank you so much for answering, and right away, too! I'm considering the edger because string trimmers seem to hate me. I use this spin trimmer for my business, mowing 60 lawns per week. The good news is it does a good job on power, on weight, and overall handling. The bad news is the IQ head does not advance as often as I need so I find myself using a short line and waiting and waiting for it to advance . My productivity drops a lot when the spin trimmer is too short, wasting my time and spending extra energy. If I can’t find a way for this to advance quicker….this trimmer might have to go. Any suggestions for this major flaw???
Have you tried stopping and spinning it back up to get the line to advance? Not ideal, but it might help. I ended up selling this one and keeping my older one, mainly because of the guard height.
@@DoresoomReviews have tried the stop then go. I have cleaned out everything and will try using only EGO . 95 string and see if it likes it any better>
You absolutely need to use the EGO .095 string, though certain other .095 strings could also work, maybe. The line IQ feature is a tightly tuned system that depends on the line being a both a certain diameter, flexibility, and density, so that the resulting centrifugal force created when the line spins is sufficient to draw the line out when it gets too short. If you change one part of a tuned system (like switching out a spring for example) you end up unintentionally detuning it and it won’t work properly. Let us know if that resolves the issue.
Uggghh, I love Ego's battery system, and the tools I have so far have excellent power and build quality. Biggest gripe is ergonomics. Thank you for mentioning! I have back issues and this is #1 selling point for me. I got a deal on the 650 CFM blower & 5 AH battery. The angle of handle could have EASILY been a little different and made a world of difference in balance/weight distribution.
I bought the new G2 power head along with the Powerload string trimmer attachment for it this year, and the angle is much better for shorter people. However, the edger attachment head seems to be designed for taller people though.
@@DoresoomReviews Hmm, interesting. I'm taller (6' 2"), but sometimes that can be a problem as well, especially if bending for long periods is involved. Ended up grabbing the Ego ST1511T for $180. Will know how it works soon !
The IQ system on mine works very poorly. It doesn't feed until the lines are ~3" in length, and then it feeds up to 12 inches resulting in big chunks of wasted line laying around when the excess is cut off. I would much rather just bump feed, but it seems as though you can't convert from IQ to bump feed.
Has it always worked that poorly, or was it a gradual decline in performance? You may have gotten a defective unit it it's always been bad. Or it may be what type of line you're running in it. It worked fairly well for me initially, but I ended up selling this to my neighbor because it was just too awkward for me to use due to my height. So I can't say how it does for long term performance.
@@DoresoomReviews It was like this with the line that came with it, plus .095 line I already had. EGO "support" told me to take it apart, but it's clean inside. It's a real pisser I can't just buy a standard head and use it, since apparently that can't be done. This guy ua-cam.com/video/GgFdZcbQXkw/v-deo.html disliked and swapped his, but he had a complete donor trimmer.
I absolutely HATE the line IQ on mine. Mine won't advance until the string is about 2 inches long, which means it has NO cutting power. You can bump or bang it and it won't advance. When the string is full length, it's great! The problem is that it wears down pretty quickly so you spend a lot of time in short string mode praying for a line advance.
Great review, thank you. I like your reviews. You are very well-spoken. I'm also 5' 3", so I played this review a few times, paying close attention. You've had this trimmer for a month, and you have the strap. Have you gotten used to it? Do you like it any better now? Did the strap make enough of a difference? Thanks for your time.
It actually doesn't come with a strap, just the attachment point for one. I decided to keep my old one and sold this new one to my neighbor since I had already thrown away the box by accident.
@@DoresoomReviews Ah, so the under 5' 6" crowd might want to wait to see EGO's answer to this problem. Shorter people have yards to care for too, EGO! Don't leave us hanging! And we need a shorter price for the shorter trimmers! 😄
I'm 5'3 and thinking about purchasing the line IQ version but having second thoughts after watching this video. If I remove the guard will it work better for shorter folks like myself? Of course I will wear safety glasses.
I think it will work without the guard, but I haven't tried it myself. The guard catching the ground was my biggest annoyance, so that would probably be the easiest fix for short people.
Great review. For your height complaint, look into the Darwin's Grip and consider getting a should strap. Also I removed the guard from mine and enjoyed it more. Make sure you wear face protection if you decide to do so.
Ego isn't discontinuing the bump feed head. They're just putting Line IQ on certain models. They still make high end models that require you to load new line by turning by hand. They're also still making models with a 15" cutting path. The ST1534 has the fastest RPM (7000) but is the heaviest with a one piece aluminum shaft and 5.0ah battery.
I haven't run it without the guard myself, so I'm not sure. I would not clean the head with water, since the motor is located there. It does fine with damp grass, but I wouldn't spray or submerge it.
Mine hasn't broken, so it's not possible for me to do so. I'd contact EGO customer service. This model is new enough that it should still be under warranty.
I looked more at the EGO patent filing after doing the review. I think it's a completely passive system in the head for advancing the line. EGO's warranty is 5 years, so the line feed mechanism should be covered for at least that long. Afterwards I would expect head replacements to be available - I can find lots of older EGO trimmer heads for sale online, but not the Line IQ head yet.
I sold it to my neighbor who is taller than me. As far as I know, he hasn't had any issues with it. I ended up getting the G2 powerhead this year, which fits my height better.
I have to pull mine apart to feed the line through. Mine doesn’t feed through that easily. So if you don’t tap it down for the line to come out; exactly how do you get the line out without pulling it all apart? That’s what I have to do with mine. Always pull it apart. My wife and kids can’t use it. Only I can keep the line on it.
I had trouble feeding the line through my first time. By the third time, it was a piece of cake. The key is to not pull it apart. Just line it up and if it doesn't go through well, start with the other side of the string. Now I can't wait to do it.
@@DoresoomReviews I have the older head, bump only. I Have a very hard time feeding through the line. Do I need to line up some arrows. Did I miss something?
I'd probably be buying this if it came with a 2.5 Ah battery, but since it doesn't include that option I'm going with the ST1511T. I don't understand why they chose to remove that configuration for this trimmer.
Huh??? You must be the only person on the planet who wants shorter batter life. Here's a suggestion - buy the 'tool only' for $199 and purchase the 2.5ah battery and charger separately. It will probably cost you more but you will get the shorter battery life you want.
@@treydrier3169The 2.5 Ah battery weighs less than the 4.0. I run 5.0Ah as standard across all my EGO tools but have 2.5Ah batteries for my hedge trimmer for the lower weight, which especially matters if you are extending the tool out and can’t otherwisec upport. For a string trimmer, I mitigate with the shoulder strap.
Anyone have issues loading line where it doesn't seem to load and the motor starts to burn up? My motor started smoking 2 times when I was loading string and the string wasn't loading. It still smells like a burnt electric motor but luckily is functioning fine.
The second time that I tried to load the head, the pcowerload refused to load the line. Debris gets into the head and you have to take it all apart and clean it.
I doubt it, but haven't tried myself. The Line IQ is a much taller head than that used by the Multi Head system. Even if they use the same attachment hardware, it will extend below the guard of the Multi Head trimmer.
The guard catching on the ground is a symptom of the main problem, which is that the head angle is too severe for shorter people. If I take the guard off then it will just let me angle it further than it's designed for. Then my trimmer's disc will be angled relative to the ground, providing an uneven cut.
Works great for a while. Then it won't load line correctly or dispense it correctly. Then you'll be working away and it shoots out several inches of line and tears up grass or borders. It's great on paper but reality is you should run from this trimmer. Put a new trimmer head, after one year, and it worked for a few days then right back to nonsense. The unit is powerful but that does no good when it takes 30 minutes to get a spool wound up. I spend more time dinking with it than using it. I wish they had it figured out because it is a neat concept.
I ended up selling this one before any feed problems manifested. I stuck with my older EGO string trimmer for a while and then upgraded to the new Gen 2 powerhead with its powerload string trimmer head this year.
Pro Tip brotha - walk backwards while edging with a weed eater. You’ll have more control of the machine and you’ll put a cleaner and more consistent edge in the grass. I have that older ego weed eater and I like it ego crushes it in the OPE game!
Looking at your video of the angle for shorter people. You are tilting the older model backwards more than it should be. Look at the head, it is not straight.
True the head axis isn't perfectly straight, but that angle dictates how often you'll catch the guard on the ground. So it's still a difference that matters.
Horrifically bad design. It allows the line to get WAAAY too short before extending more line, so you'll spend most of your time cutting with 2" nubs of line as it will NOT allow you to manually extend line. Instead you would have to unwind the entire line and reload it to get the full length you want
Sorry but gas trimmers are better, it’s a total sin for me to use anything electric or battery powered, they aren’t as powerful and it’s a pain to wait for the battery to charge, gas powered all day baby!!
This EGO trimmer is every bit as powerful as my old gas ECHO SRM-225, which I got rid of as soon as I got my first EGO string trimmer. The only thing that would have made me keep the ECHO it is if I had a large area to cut and needed the non-stop runtime that gas offers. But for yards a half acre and less, you really have no need for gas anymore.
I can use an edger tool, hedge trimmer on 5 large bushes and string trim my whole yard on one 2.5ah battery. I never have to buy gas or worry about a gas/oil mixture. It's substantially quieter than a gas trimmer and a little bit lighter, too. No fumes either. I previously had a 120V electric Black and Decker string trimmer that wouldn't bump the line out. Even with a brand new head assembly. I've never had that issue with my Ego in 5 years.
@@DoresoomReviews HI, yes it is, it has nice padding and is fully adjustable. It even has a cross strap to keep it from sliding off your shoulders. A friend of mine who also has one complained to me about the heat but I don't understand what he is talking about because the battery itself sits about two inches away from the surface of your skin. I also have a powerhead and I like to use the backpack when edging because I can run a large battery and don't have to swap it after 20 minutes. I almost wish they made one that could hold two batteries. I find it easiest to put it on and keep it on, I do my trimming, switch to the powerhead, do my edging, then switch to the blower and clean up, definitely saves time.

@@LarryCook1960I just switched mine to bump feed it works on mine
I absolutely HATE the line IQ on mine. Mine won't advance until the string is about 2 inches long, which means it has NO cutting power. You can bump or bang it and it won't advance. When the string is full length, it's great! The problem is that it wears down pretty quickly so you spend a lot of time in short string mode praying for a line advance.
That sounds really frustrating! Has it always been like that, or did it get worse over time?
@@DoresoomReviews Mine has always been like that.......and now my line won't advance automatically at all.
The line loading alone is worth the price of admission. Buy your own .095 line and take a couple minutes to cut a bunch of 14 foot sections.
Thanks for the great review. Will this new model (ST1623T) take a brush blade?
Thanks in advance.
I don't think it will take a brush blade, but I'm not sure.
@@DoresoomReviews Thanks
I’d like you to test the Milwaukee 28 oz framing hammer
We just bought one and we are 5'4" - hopefully it's not too bad!
Excellent video. Great job!
LOL, I like the idea of "pay per height!" Discounts on everything!
Does removing the guard defeat the purpose of line iq??? cause im so used to trimming without the guard.
@@aseroxmilez No it does not. Line IQ works independently of the guard.
I don't remember claiming they were discontinuing all bump feed models. They're definitely reserving Line IQ as their "premium" model for now.
I just tried to use it. I'm killing the grass by string digging in it and I cut through my rubber border
👋 Do you think the line iq would work without the guard?
Yes I think it will, but I haven't tried it myself.
Can it be ran with out the line guard ? And can the head be cleaned with water 💧 or will it be an electrical fail ?
I haven't run it without the guard myself, so I'm not sure. I would not clean the head with water, since the motor is located there. It does fine with damp grass, but I wouldn't spray or submerge it.
Headlo gyoje ganeung habnikka?
hello. Can ST1620 Line IQ Head be interchanged with ST1520 Bump Head?
I don't think the head can be exchanged for a bump feed one, but I'm not sure.
Please make a video on how to fix the load button.
Mine hasn't broken, so it's not possible for me to do so. I'd contact EGO customer service. This model is new enough that it should still be under warranty.
Are there replacement parts if the sensor fails?
I looked more at the EGO patent filing after doing the review. I think it's a completely passive system in the head for advancing the line. EGO's warranty is 5 years, so the line feed mechanism should be covered for at least that long. Afterwards I would expect head replacements to be available - I can find lots of older EGO trimmer heads for sale online, but not the Line IQ head yet.
Sold!!! Off to Lowe's 🍻
Before you return it, buy and attach the Ego shoulder strap.
Did you line up the arrows on the head before feeding through the line?
@@louisperich6678 If you have the 2.5ah battery from the hedge trimmer, just use that battery instead of the 4ah battery. Problem solved.
@@frommatorav1 that is exactly what I do. Sharing that tip with y’all.
You know if that head can fit on the multi tool ego head?
I doubt it, but haven't tried myself. The Line IQ is a much taller head than that used by the Multi Head system. Even if they use the same attachment hardware, it will extend below the guard of the Multi Head trimmer.
take off or cut down the guard?
The guard catching on the ground is a symptom of the main problem, which is that the head angle is too severe for shorter people. If I take the guard off then it will just let me angle it further than it's designed for. Then my trimmer's disc will be angled relative to the ground, providing an uneven cut.
My line rarely ever stays in. It comes out so much we had to start feeding it in unevenly so only on side it out. Any recommendations
Are you using .095" diameter line?
fits my 6ft 2in frame well
Works great for a while.
Thank you for this great review! I'm shorter, too, so I really appreciate you mentioning the issues for shorter folk.
Is this head patented under EGO?
Yes, Chervon (EGO's parent company) has a patent on the design.
solid review.
How much cost
$300 for the 4Ah battery kit: lowes.sjv.io/KedPay
You can put a shoulder strap on this at reasonable price.
Good review. Thank you
Pro Tip brotha - walk backwards while edging with a weed eater. You’ll have more control of the machine and you’ll put a cleaner and more consistent edge in the grass. I have that older ego weed eater and I like it ego crushes it in the OPE game!

Can’t take off Guard because of constant feeding of line
Is that something you've tried with this string trimmer, or just something you think will happen?
question
I think you can take the guard off. It doesn't seem to keep feeding once it reaches the designed 16" diameter.

Can’t get this for the multi tool, still the old school one. Lame
They do have a new powerload version or the multi-head tool, but it only works with the gen 2 power head.
@@DoresoomReviews thanks. That is no help to me as a Gen one owner. I get why but it’s aggregating
Looking at your video of the angle for shorter people. You are tilting the older model backwards more than it should be. Look at the head, it is not straight.
True the head axis isn't perfectly straight, but that angle dictates how often you'll catch the guard on the ground. So it's still a difference that matters.
Looks like a little electrical tape will fix that trigger lock.
I thought about just prying it off or taking a Dremel to it, but tape is probably a better idea.
Flip the handle so it sits lower.
That might work. I ended up selling this one to my neighbor anyway.

when sand/dirt gets in the inertia cassett & spring it jams and suddenly releases a foot of line,COMMERCIAL OPERATORS DO NOT BUY!!
Horrifically bad design. It allows the line to get WAAAY too short before extending more line, so you'll spend most of your time cutting with 2" nubs of line as it will NOT allow you to manually extend line. Instead you would have to unwind the entire line and reload it to get the full length you want
I have one.....I'd stay away from these trimmers.
5'3" 😂 everything is designed for taller people.
Story of my life! 😂 Leg room is never a problem though.

Oh please, he can't control his height.
I'm pretty happy with mine, I do however use the backpack battery holder to lighten it up even more.
That would definitely help with balance if the string trimmer is set to its shortest length. Is the backpack pretty comfortable?
Sounded fantastic until I read in the comments the "auto-bump" fails quickly due to a plastic part shearing off. Deal-breaker for me.
