How to: Cabinet Door Construction

- An inside look at how we're building out flat panel shaker cabinet doors. I was ordering my doors prior to hiring Ken, and he convinced me that building them ourselves was a better idea. Agreed!
What would you do differently, besides buy more equipment to speed this process up, I promise it's on the growing to-do list.

I am an european, living in Lisbon, Portugal, EU. I am not a builder or working in the housing industry, but i find it fascinating. I do not know any company as yours NS. So professional and professionalist. GREAT team too. CONGRATULATIONS to you all and, being young is not the main difference towards others, what makes you EXTRAORDINARY is you!
I’m so excited to see you start pushing UA-cam a bit more!
I'd never heard of the spaceballs before - looks like a great idea!
you guys are off the chart with this one! Awesome!
Excellent videos. Very informative and educational. The quality of craftsmanship shows in the final product. Please keep up the good work and more videos.
Love the space balls! I’ve never glued my panels as leaving them floating is the way to go but these balls eliminate the rattle you can get when closing the doors.
Love the idea of adding the domino. Adds piece of mind to the builder and customer! Top notch! Thanks for the insight.
Thank you, we felt the same way
Yes! More of these videos please. Top notch and well presented.
Will do!
Great video. Thanks for posting.
big fan of the video! Loved that you included the materials used. It would be awesome if you did a video for how you make cabinet door with glass front
Love the overview of some of the actual building processes and attention to detail
Thanks let us know what else you want to see, happy to share.
For a sander to run doors through, have you looked at the jet oscillating spindle sander? They're a good option if you don't want to go all the way to a big belt sander. It makes a huge difference in the look of a run of cabinet doors when they are all dead flat.
Awesome content - you could make a ton of videos using this format 👍🏻👍🏻
Had to laugh when I saw the green Downes and Reader note pad! I’m a cabinetmaker/finish carpenter on the cape and occasionally used them for a lot of my hardwood and sheet goods. I can’t even count how many of those note pads I was given! Lol! Your work looks great, glad I found your channel through Matt Risinger’s channel.
Randy Kapisky that’s how I found this channel as well and I’m enjoying the content they put out.
Can you add to the description the bit sets you use? Great video and explanation of why you do it the way you do. Do you use a standard rail/stile size on all doors?
Nick I have to say man, great job on these videos (blsignaturehomes)
Thanks for sharing the process. Being Australian though, we work in metric so I get a little lost when you start talking imperial dimensions!
Time to go shopping for some tools. Making cabinet doors on a router table is insane.
If you really want to spool up, budget about $100k if you want to go new. Sounds like a lot, but the return is huge.
KBrogger for sure! In due time
Any videos on how you construct your upper and lower boxes?
Fantastic video. Solid construction. What drove you to get away from purchasing cabinets? Was it just more control? Did you notice customers being able to justify the added expense because of the value you added by going fully custom? Thank you
Prime the panel before putting them together so if it moves you won't see raw material. But nice touch on the domino's.
fuckin' Nice and kudos to Ken.
Is that the mft 3 with an insert or the actual Festool Router table cms ge?
hey guys, thanks for the video. A question -- when you're doing a whole bunch of these for, let's say, a whole kitchen, some of them will be drawer fronts rather than doors. So how are you connecting these to the drawer boxes -- since you have a 3/8" panel, are you connecting the drawer fronts to the drawer boxes via the maple pieces (thereby avoiding drilling into the MDF 3/8 panel? I assume you would have to do this but wanted to ask you for your feedback. thanks
Rad Video. I would dig more content like this. Question about the domino: I think I recall somewhere seeing that you started adding the domino because paint was cracking from door flex, is that right? I believe the idea of cope and stick doors is to allow wood to move both for the panel (if using real wood for the panel) and for the rails and stiles. By adding the domino aren't you restricting seasonal movement of the stick (rail) in the cope (stile)?
Really like the panel detail, looks dope!
Jeremy Hitchcock the panel and “frame” have the ability to move. The joint should not move, at all.
be careful with space balls on long doors and solid wood center panels. Lets say you make the door in the winter. then install the doors in the summer. the center panel will expand a bit. it will press on the space balls and bow the long stiles just a bit. ( i know the space balls compress but dont rely on it ) its not too big of a deal until you have 2 tall doors side by side and each one is bowed 1/64 to 1/32 . it helps if you keep the space balls very close to the corners. been there done that.
We don't use solid wood center panels for that reason.
👍
Nick a Timesaver is a no brainer if you’ve moved your doors totally in house. I’m sure you probably already know that. Good work though. Thanks.
William Bradford it’s on the list!
Have you considered taking the doors to a business that has a large wide belt sander to save you the time?
I have done this a number of times and it’s always been worth the extra expense.
Y'all let me know if you open up a shop in Texas! 😉
What the name of music in background from 2:40 ?
At the end of the day are your cabinets more expensive or about the same as you'd buy for the same project?
We're likely going to be more expensive, but its the value we add that reflects the up charge.
NS Builders
For sure... Like you said, when you control everything the end product is much better
I thought you only used a floating panel if it was solid wood didnt know mdf expanded.
It moves very little. If it’s glued to the hardwood it won’t allow it to expand and contract the way it needs to and can cause problems.
In the words of Lenny from the original Law and Order: Suspenders AND a belt!
By the way, weren't space balls invented by Mell Brooks?
if nick makes a video and isn't wearing flannel, did he ever really make a video?
