You make MDF look really nice!
Great job as ever -- and give Shawn craftsboy there some airtime so he can be given some tlc, yeah
Thank you!!
Yes good idea...he's not keen on the camera but we have a laugh!
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop yeah I know it shows the lad goes about his matters, just to give a nudge really, bit of respectful acknowledgement for the work he puts in and the ideas he brings to the table, yeah? You two go on now, don't want to let the saw dust settle do we
Yeah!
why does ryan do all the work and you do the "splaynen"----good vid thanx rick
:-) Thank you Rick!!
Very efficient! With the sanding stage before priming is there no need to apply a filler? I know you've done that before but maybe it's overkill?
Thank you!
We've found there is no benefit to filling these edges. Yep we have done it before, but the 2 coats of primer effectively acts like a filler and once complete they are like glass 👍👍
@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop awesome, will give that a go next time, cheers Ryan
Hi ryan, amazing technique, when you make your doors, which thickness of MDF do you use?, trying to avoid the door warpage with the weight of MDF, especially for the large wardrobe doors, do you use 18mm and add 6mm strips or is it another ratio?
Same question I was wondering aswell also do you use MR 6mm strips or just normal (moisture resistant) ordinary mdf warps and sags but mf holds its shape
Hi!
Thank you.
I've narrowed it down to 12mm door blank and 6mm strips, making the total 18mm thick.
This makes them nice and light.
I've not had many issues with twisting or warping and I've been doing this for a good 4-5 years.
You could use 15 and 6 or 18 and 6 but your hinges will need to be able to work with that particular thickness.
I used to do 18 and 3 and it worked OK, but the 3mm used to fluff up so easily.
I think I'm happy with the 12 and 6 now.
Just make sure you paint both faces in equal number, and possibly do front, back, front , back, etc when painting.
Hope this helps 👍
Hi I just answered the above question .
Re moisture resistant, I've not noticed any benefits personally.
I use standard mdf all the time 👍
@thelondoncraftsman2026 class.yeah I know what you mean the 18 and 6 would be OK for two doors next to each other but for a row of doors it would be too thick they would rub against each other I must try the 12 and 6 to see if I get better results.done a couple of jobs now using your method and I'm starting to get repeat customers from the one job that i done .thanks Ryan for sharing your technique now I have to just watch your video for getting the smooth edges on the doors.btw I'm from Scotland so won't be stealing any of your business lol
What speed do you use router at?
Full speed
Do you use standard mdf ?
Yes mainly standard only
Why don't you use a router sledge to even out the strips?
because it would likely make the strips all differnet widths and its over the top and dusty :-)
You need a drum sander. Wizz through that in no time.
