Union Station is my dream band. If I could choose one and only one famous person to play a show with it’d be Alison Krauss. Her voice, when she sings, holds the melody so gently and hauntingly it slays me. They are extraordinary. ... Extraordinary.
I believe them to be the greatest assembly of musicians in any genre. I've yet to hear their equal and Vince Gill has been slept on by nearly everyone. "Mediocrity recognizes nothing higher than itself, but talent can spot genius in an instant"
Search for the "Heartsongs" album by Dolly Parton, a live album recorded at Dollywood where she was accompanied by Alison Krauss and Union Station. Shivers garranteed!
Hearing her live is ethereal. The first time I heard her my entire body when into full-on goose bumps and my eyes filled up. I was not expecting that. Radio does not do her justice at all.
Vince has the best tenor voice, that has ever been in country music. He is also a tremendous player. Anyone who is not familiar with his career, take some time to dig into him. He started very young, and has been such a pillar in the music community.
I played this song without listening to the words and it made me tear up. I played it again and and tears flowed. I was literally floored emotionally and sonically. Good Lord, thank you for bring these people together.
Thank you so much for this. There are musicians in this world and then there are musicians like Union Station. Alison Krauss sings like an actual angel and when she sings with Vince Gill, it's in a place mere mortals dare not tread.
This is the most beautiful and emotion-laden music I've ever heard. The angelic voice of Allison Krauss is taken to the moon with the exquisite harmony of Union Station. Vince put a lot of hurt on in the music world for lovers who have listened to the heart-breaking lyrics. Never get tired of hearing it and each time sounds like the first time.
Absolutely in agreement. I don't know of any harmony singing better than this. Jerry Douglas's steel slide guitar intro and solo is extraordinarily beautiful and astonishingly well played. There's a crying tone to it that I have never heard in anything else quite like this before. The ultimate beauty in misery song.
I love love love both Vince and Allison, I have worn out Allison's and Union Stations live CD. She has such a beautiful voice. And Vince is my very favorite singer and musician
The talent in this band is insane. Alison and Vince's voices together is unstoppable. And the songwriting. Sheesh. And not to mention Douglas' dobro. Killer. Thanks for posting.
I can tell you're really enjoying Jerry Douglas' dobro. I mean, he really knows how to just throw in those notes so well. This band is SO TIGHT! They are perfection.
Dude! EVERYTHING you praised there is exactly why I am a fan of Alison Krauss as well! And of singers like Zhou Shen...another pure voice who also really doesn't need a lot more than his voice and his talent to sound absolutely beautiful!
Quiet possibly one of the best ensembles ever. The musical talent of all these artists on their own is amazing. Together, they sound like angels from above.
I’m not the biggest country music fan but I’ve always been a HUGE Vince Gill fan. This is unreal! I agree that Vince and Allison together are ridiculous!! And the band is soooo tight! This song never fails to make me tear up lol great job! Side note: I made a slide show for my father in laws funeral with Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High on That Mountain” and there wasn’t a dry eye in the place. His voice is just so unbelievable!
I realize this post is 3 years old now, but I'm just getting to it. One of my favorite groups, and then you add Vince Gill and it just gets better. Thanks for the analysis of how the melody works with the chord progression. Simple, but so helpful when you're writing for straightforward progressions like this.
Vince Gill has been my guy since the 1970s. His voice is so pure and sweet and can play the guitar like very few. Vince can write such heartbreaking music that hits us in our souls.
I have always noticed Alison's lack of, or at least very subtle vibrato, and It gives her voice a remarkable purity, and appeal. Another reactor who is a vocal coach brought up a point that I never considered. Vibrado can help hide imperfection in pitch. Without that vibrado Alison has to have absolutely perfect pitch. He showed her vocals on an oscilloscope, and showed how accurate her voice is. Also, Vince Gill is one of the most kind and generous musicians ever. I think that when you are truly in it for the joy of the music itself, you don't always have to take the top spot.
It was so beautiful and their voices just blended in there so beautiful I love listening to Vince Gill and when Alison Kraus joins in with him it’s so beautiful
BOTH of them have voices of pure butter. I've said for years that I'm pretty sure Alison is actually an Angel sent down from Heaven.... Just so that the rest of us know what they sound like. We grew up rural and poor.... there was a local station that picked up some music videos (no MTV or CMT at my house) -- but they played music videos of "less known" artists..... "Steel Rails" hooked me from day 1. Vince is a "Picker" too... of the highest regard (as I know that you know already). The 15 years I spent working local crew for him here in Ga. are some of my favorite music memories.
Powerful medley growth built together with 2 unique voices for an absolute softness and strength for perfection in performance! Beautiful, can't improve, perfection has reached it's limit! True masters, They have etched their names in time!
PLUS the fact that this was a live presentation, not done in the studio. Yes, this is a perfect song. I appreciate the fact that you love it as much as I do, and it was for this simple reason that I've subscribed to you! I can see your goosebumps, while I'm feeling them myself. Thank you. I'm going to learn it right now.
I play pedal steel, but I love bluegrass, and I really appreciate you breaking down, and explaining, this performance for those of us who love the music, almost as much as you do. You have made a real contribution to the music we all love. Thank you, so much. Keep pickin' brother.
I'm a month late to comment on this but, vince gill and patty loveless performing "go rest high on that mountain" at george Jones's funeral is one of the greatest and most emotional live country recordings of all time.
What takes it over the top for me is the sound of Dan Timynski’s voice in the bottom of that vocal blend. That bit of rasp in the approach to the chorus gives me chills. Those are three of the most interesting voices in music working together there.
Get some rest, Michael. Tons of folks you never met care about you and your family. Thanks for everything you do and for your enthusiasm for the music.
Love the fact that you get the magnitude of collective talent here that has enthralled me for the last 35 yrs! I am a bluegrass picker from So Cal. Ron Block and I grew up close to each other, and we saw each one another often at festivals and jams, and shared the same teacher, my friend and mentor, John Hickman, who played banjo with the great Oklahoma fiddler, and my good friend Byron Berline. I was always amazed by Ron's playing! Byron brought Vince out to So Cal in 1976, when Vince was about 18. I got to do a lot of picking with Vince for the next 5 yrs or so. I had been playing for only about 3 yrs at that time, and really did not fully appreciate how incredibly good Vince was, even then! I asked him to play some gigs with me, and he was so gracious and generous with his time, and patient with me, as I realized much later. He was never about being the front guy or showing off. He only played what was needed to make the music sound good. He told me later that all he really ever wanted to be was a great back up musician and singer. When he went to Nashville in the early 80's, he made his name as a studio musician. You can still hear him on everything from those early and mid 80's country records. He wrote a song once ..She's everybody's Sweetheart but mine..because his first wife, Janice, with the Sweethearts of the Rodeo, were more well known than he was at the time. I got to hear Jerry Douglas back in 1973 for the first time on a record of The Country Gentlemen. He and Ricky Skaggs were in the band then. Jerry was about 17. Every time I have seen the band, I sit there mesmerized. I have gotten to hang out back stage on many occasions and met them all. They just blow me away! So great to hear you react the way you did on this video. I have been doing the same thing for many years. Thank You!
I have seen the union station lineup at least 4 times and they are incredible. Every performance sounds like their best. And when they added Jerry it just got better.
Actually, Vince has been singing with Patty Loveless a lot longer than Alison. They often back up each other on their recordings. Check out "When I Call Your Name" from 1989. Make sure it's the one with Patty. Pure heaven, IMO. Love anything that Alison does, BTW. Great review.
Hey mike, l love Alison Krause , Vince Gill and the Union Station! Thanks for pointing out this beautiful song I’ve never heard before. Your enthusiasm for music is awesome! Thanks for breaking down the song some and helping us players to understand what’s going on! Makes me realize I have a lot to learn and long ways to go to be on a level of musicianship I’d like to be at!
I’ve seen Alison Krauss and Union Station five times and each was a religious experience. Proof that magic happens when the right players find each other to play songs that are meant for them. I’d listen to Alison sing a list of ingredients and pay for the privilege. Vince is a national treasure. A musician who knows how to get out of the way for other musicians and the song. This is a gift for anyone smart enough to listen. Thanks for featuring it. One day, when you’re feeling like tearing your heart out, react to Vince and Patty Loveless performing Go Rest High On That Mountain at George Jones’s memorial service. It’s one of the bravest musical performances you’ll ever see.
Love Vince and Alison! You should react to Go Rest High On That Mountain with Vince, Alison and Ricky Skaggs doing tight 3 part vocal harmonies. Simply the best blend of voices I’ve ever heard. Love the channel!
Thanks for this video and pointing out their musicality. -so transparent and precise. No over playing. -a lot of listening going on to play together like that.
This was from a CMT program called "Cross Country", the idea being to combine two country artists from different traditions of country music, taking turns playing lead on each other's songs, which is why Alison was taking the lead on a Vince Gill song. He played lead on some of her songs during the program. If anyone has the whole program and can do so, please post it.
I really enjoy all of the content and music on your channel as I only watch for joy,I play no instruments. Allison and Vince are super talented when singing alone, with other singers and like this song, together. Thanks
Alison Krause is what i imagine angels would sound like, she (with Union Station & Jerry Douglas) was my most anticipated main stage act in 6 Bonnaroos and they did not disappoint
I played bluegrass for 20 years before retiring. What makes bluegrass so great is you have access to all the musicians. I’ve played with all of these musicians. You bring your own self to the mix and magic happens!
This is a beautiful song! Thank you for breaking it down! I love their voices together. Union Station is beyond Amazing and Allison there are no words! There is a vid of her, Vince and Ricky Scaggs that blew my socks off but I can't remember what it was now.
Also, aside from suggesting videos, thank you for these lessons. You were right, this way of teaching is the future. You've opened me up to new music and different ways of seeing and hearing it all. Thank you
Mike your the man, no matter what you do. I don’t blame you for feeling the way you did the other day. Love your passion! Btw you should react to Jason Isbell as well as the first band he was in the drive by truckers. The guy is an incredible song writer.
Mike, Thanks for putting this together. Love that you open with the melody and no talking. Great touch. I don't play an instrument or read music, but I can appreciate how you hold my interest for our admiration of AK, Union Station and Vince. Also, I learned a couple things from you along the way. Kudos
His back up vocals are the best I’ve ever heard. I saw a video of him playing in his house and his voice projects ridiculously The fiddle part made me puke it sounded so good. Especially the last notes of it. My headphones are really awesome.
And here after all these years, I thought I was the only one that went insane over this performance. UNBELIEVABLE GATHERING OF MUSICAL TALENT. The only question I have...”Is this heaven?”
Cheeeeeze Mike, you are one really righteous and cool spirit. Great player, great mind, great soul. It's obvious that your mind journey's to some pretty profound destinations my brother. Thanks Bro. This is how everyone should try to roll.
If you think this video is great it's really nothing but normal for them. I've seen her 6 times live where I was 40 ft or less from the stage. Every song they do is pure perfection like this one. I play myself and never once saw any of them miss a note or flub a line. I'm sure it happens but it must be rare. When she sings, the purity of her voice and perfect pitch is music to my ears. The greatest thing is her pure delivery of everything and the way the band forms everything around her voice and the delivery of the line.... Pure Perfection is a Gross Understatement..I wish they would tour together again as Alison Krauss and Union Station!
Very nice Michael! Love Union Station backing them. Allison always sounds ethereal. I’m always a sucker for that slide resonator guitar. Vince compliments with the harmony perfectly. ☺️
Beautiful and in depth dissection of this incredible song. I really enjoyed it! There is NO ONE that can touch Alison Krauss and Union Station...NO ONE! I'm not a religious person but I truly believe that if angels exist, they would sound like Alison.
I would love to see more breakdowns of songs you think we would all enjoy. Love when you do requests but would definitely enjoy the insight into your daily playlists. Great channel.
I learn so much from you....your are a great teacher. I don't play an instrument, or read music, but you truly teach how to appreciate the beauty of the details and expression in musicianship. I really enjoy your authenticity and kind demeanor.
I used to wonder what the hell are people talking about when analysing a song like this and i had already been playing guitar for 30 year but in the last 10 year i know what you meant 😍 you actually resonate and are in sync with the music which makes you become the song and it lets you hear things you never heard before😍 vince is my fav singer and 2nd fav guitar picker after brent mason😍😍 great song and video mike👍🏻
Jerry also plays some "hot" pedal steel. He did a live performance with Dan Seals, where he played the steel. I just wish it would be available on UA-cam for those of us who love his steel as much as the dobro he does. Great musician, and gentleman of the craft. It just saturates your life as nothing else can, all the way to the heart.
Union Station is my dream band. If I could choose one and only one famous person to play a show with it’d be Alison Krauss. Her voice, when she sings, holds the melody so gently and hauntingly it slays me. They are extraordinary. ... Extraordinary.

My husband and I are entranced by Alison Krause and Union Station.
Just incredible. Alison Krauss is otherworldly.
The guy in the blue shirt playing guitar is Dan Tyminski, the singer on Avicii’s “Hey Brother”, great singer in his own right.
Vince is off the chart the mayor of harmony town and Allison vocals are always marvelous, they sound like a small orchestra
All time GOAT at harmonizing....he makes the best artists in the world sound better.
Alison Kruass' voice is so pure and her pitch is absolutely spot on. Sometimes I cry.....
She sounds better live than most people do in the studio. Her vibrato is sweet.
I played this song without listening to the words and it made me tear up. I played it again and and tears flowed. I was literally floored emotionally and sonically. Good Lord, thank you for bring these people together.
I glad I’m not the only one that gets sappy and overwhelmed over every intricate segment of this performance. As good as it gets!
Thank you so much for this. There are musicians in this world and then there are musicians like Union Station. Alison Krauss sings like an actual angel and when she sings with Vince Gill, it's in a place mere mortals dare not tread.
Thank you! Glad you love it like I do :)
❤️ just love that song
My favorite reaction so far. 3 chords and the truth, sometimes thats all it takes. Talent is absolutely impeccable!
This is the most beautiful and emotion-laden music I've ever heard. The angelic voice of Allison Krauss is taken to the moon with the exquisite harmony of Union Station. Can you imagine how supremely accomplished a player you would have to be to even have the nerve to audition for that band? Just wonderful.
I’m not the biggest country music fan but I’ve always been a HUGE Vince Gill fan. This is unreal! I agree that Vince and Allison together are ridiculous!! And the band is soooo tight! I think their version of "whenever you come around" is even better!
Love Alison Krauss & Union Station. Her voice...gasp...be still my heart!
I realize this post is 3 years old now, but I'm just getting to it. One of my favorite groups, and then you add Vince Gill and it just gets better. Thanks for the analysis of how the melody works with the chord progression. Simple, but so helpful when you're writing for straightforward progressions like this.
Everyone in Union Station is a genius at what they do. Alison is the most beautiful voice I've ever heard! Stay strong Michael.

The cowboy plays a sad song... Dude, you will be ok. You are loved.
Powerful medley growth built together with 2 unique voices for an absolute softness and strength for
perfection in performance! Beautiful, can't improve, perfection has reached it's limit! True masters,
They have etched their names in time!
Beautiful! The dynamic range, pure voices and each instrument delicately weave spin gold.
You have a stage crowded with some of the very best ever at their chosen craft...and all egos have been checked at the door in service of the song.
Oh for sure. Best of the very best.
Jerry Douglas just puts me on the floor every time he plays a phrase whether solo or accompaniment!
Same here. Amazing. He knows how to open you up completely
Ain't it the truth.
PLUS the fact that this was a live presentation, not done in the studio. Yes, this is a perfect song. I appreciate the fact that you love it as much as I do, and it was for this simple reason that I've subscribed to you! I can see your goosebumps, while I'm feeling them myself. Thank you. Almost a year... and only 967 likes?!?!?!?.... Crazy talent on display and this is the treatment it gets??
Thanks for sharing Michael! :)

Blew me away, too. A master class in everything musical.

Love the fact that you get the magnitude of collective talent here that has enthralled me for the last 35 yrs! I am a bluegrass picker from So Cal. Ohhhh man. Vince and Patty. When I call your name. Definitely. Patty Loveless's voice is just....no words....
@@coryCuc Seen her in concert many times. She is my favorite. Such a pure voice. :-)
@@herb601 I've seen her a few times live and she's even better in person. :)
@@coryCuc Absolutely.
Makes you want to cry, doesn't it. I love listening to them.
Two of the best performers working right now, but also two of the most humorous live shows. You need to see both of them live.
Krause has perfect pitch, it’s unequalled in singers,, she one of a kind,, really folks,, she exists in our world as we speak,,,she’s perfect

Love Vince and Alison!
You should react to Go Rest High On That Mountain with Vince, Alison and Ricky Skaggs doing tight 3 part vocal harmonies. Simply the best blend of voices I’ve ever heard.
Love the channel!
Thanks!
Both are national treasures. Thank you for this one! New sub.
There's a reason Alison has all those Grammy's
Her voice is of an angel!

If the angles in heaven don't sound like Alyson Krauss then I don't want to go.
Thats essentially what Brad Paisley said of her singing, if the angels don't sound like Alison send me back.
Saw them in the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Omaha back around 2008. Pristine music in a pristine setting. Heavenly stuff. It really was.
These people are phenomenal musicians! It don't get much better than this!
Alison Krause is what i imagine angels would sound like, she (with Union Station & Jerry Douglas) was my most anticipated main stage act in 6 Bonnaroos and they did not disappoint

His back up vocals are the best I’ve ever heard. I saw a video of him playing in his house and his voice projects ridiculously
The fiddle part made me puke it sounded so good. Especially the last notes of it. My headphones are really awesome.
Thank you for this Mike Alison krauss has an angelic voice her album with Robert plant is constantly playing on my Spotify at the moment
Shivers run down my spine every time I hear this song. When perfect musicians play the perfect song it hits you hard at the core.
Thank you , I share your love of such a beautifully balanced performance.
And here after all these years, I thought I was the only one that went insane over this performance. UNBELIEVABLE GATHERING OF MUSICAL TALENT. The only question I have...”Is this heaven?”
Totally.
That is beautiful! They are perfect together, two of my favorites❤️
In the past I loved listening to Jim Ed Brown & Helen Cornelius. I heard them live in Tomah, WI, at the county fair in the 1980's.
I could just sit and listen to you play all day…your intro on this video was beautiful and beautifully played. Love your vibe. ♥️
Agreed.
I would love to see more breakdowns of songs you think we would all enjoy. Love when you do requests but would definitely enjoy the insight into your daily playlists. Great channel.
Thank you so much for this very insightful analysis, Michael! What a blessing!!
Same concert, look up "whenever you come around" another Vince Gill song, it's amazing.
Passion. Thank you for awakening my heart and opening a door this morning. I needed to hear this.
totally agree - no singers out there who sound better together
I learn so much from you....your are a great teacher. I don't play an instrument, or read music, but you truly teach how to appreciate the beauty of the details and expression in musicianship. I really enjoy your authenticity and kind demeanor.
*you're
I used to wonder what the hell are people talking about when analysing a song like this and i had already been playing guitar for 30 year but in the last 10 year i know what you meant 😍 you actually resonate and are in sync with the music which makes you become the song and it lets you hear things you never heard before😍 vince is my fav singer and 2nd fav guitar picker after brent mason😍😍 great song and video mike👍🏻
Best dobro player ever..
Absolutely. Jerry Douglas is a true legend.
@@louismolyneux4055 Pretty sure he’s an alien.
Her voice to me is ….. the best that ever will be as far as female artist
Two of the best in country music.
Thanks Michael! Always been one my favorites too!
