Vincent Grant Gill (born April 12, 1957) is an American country music singer, songwriter and musician. He has achieved commercial success and fame both as frontman of the country rock band Pure Prairie League in the 1970s and as a solo artist beginning in 1983.
Alison Maria Krauss (born July 23, 1971) is an American bluegrass-country singer and fiddler. Her soundtrack performances have led to further popularity, including the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, and the Cold Mountain soundtrack, which led to her performance at the 2004 Academy Awards. Platinum-selling Raising Sand (2007) was the first of her two collaborations with English rock singer Robert Plant.
Rickie Lee Skaggs (born July 18, 1954),[6] known professionally as Ricky Skaggs, is an American neotraditional country and bluegrass singer, musician, producer, and composer. He primarily plays mandolin; however, he also plays fiddle, guitar, mandocaster, and banjo
"Go Rest High on That Mountain" is a song written and recorded by American country music artist Vince Gill. It was released in August 1995 as the sixth single from his album When Love Finds You. It is a eulogic ballad. Gill began writing the song following the death of country music singer Keith Whitley in 1989. Gill did not finish the song until a few years later following the death of his older brother Bob of a heart attack in 1993. Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless both sang background vocals on the record.

Vince Gill is that uber talented dude that every single person in Nashville adores and wants to work with...an amazing person. He tried to sing this at George Jones's memorial concert after his death, and Patty Loveless had to lead him through he broke down so hard...not for nothing, he's a fantastic guitarist, as well....
He also improvised a great emotional guitar solo when he couldn't hold his voice together, which was equally as searing as his vocals.
and Patty Loveless was the ethereal presence with incredible voice IMO.
Yea, but I hate that performance for reaction to the song. crying overwhelmed the song itself. A funeral is not exactly an appropriate reaction.
@@denroy3 I suspect he was feeling the combined grief of unfinished for his brother (for whom the song written and reaction to George’s death). There is no time line for grief and its never really resolved in the loss of someone significant. If you don’t know now, you will. Just sayin’.
@@denroy3 I never suggested she react to it, I was just reaffirming the idea that he seems to be a very loving and caring human being...
These three are the crème de la crème in country music. Alison has won 27 Grammy awards, the most in all of country music. Vince is second with 22 awards, and Ricky is third with 15. Until she was recently surpassed by Beyoncé, Alison led all singers in any genre.
Alison > beyonce any day!
None of them are country music any longer.
They're beyond those limits.
They play freely.
The bee couldn’t hold a note compared to Allison. Bee doesn’t sing she put on show. Music show maybe.
Yeah but can Beyoncé play the fiddle amazingly well?!!
I'll take Allison over Beyonce any day of the week. Ricky Scaggs and Vince Gill are absolute gold; killer players and singers. Now let's all go watch the Liza Jane video to recover from the emotionzzz
I'm a 6', 280 lb sasquatch-looking, bearded old guy and this song always leaves me wiping tears. I've listened to it at so many funerals in recent years; too many gone so soon.
What blows my mind is how someone who wrote that song can hold it together while singing it. That’s a true professional.
Amen!
He can't always, he's had his moments.
He wasn’t able at George Jones and Patty Loveless really took the reins.
Vince Gill has the purest voice in country music. I have said this for decades. Enjoy finding all his music.
These three are among the best country music has to offer. 😎
Country yes, but more specifically, they're all centered in bluegrass, which is where their friendship was established and connected
These three are among the best music has to offer. There fixed it for you :)
Absolutely
Yes, let's not forget Ricky Scaggs the conumate musician, mandolinist, singer-songwriter who has done so much for bluegrass.
All three are so talented. I’ve seen Ricky Skaggs in concert and it was probably one of my top 3 concerts I’ve been to.
We had this sung at my Mom's funeral. She was a Southern mountain woman, a preacher's daughter who had a soft spot for kids, animals and football. She had a backbone of cold-forged steel wrapped in the softest velvet of a mother's love. I know you're home now and I miss you every day Mom.
If this song doesn't make you tear up, you have No soul. And yes I agree this man's voice is like a Angel.
Please more Vince gill. He also one of the best guitarists alive.
Totally one of the best, if underrated, pickers out there. I’ll never forget watching one of the Crossroads concerts and seeing Clapton look a bit dumbfounded at our country boy, Sweet Pea, when it was his turn to solo. Good stuff. And Allison is no slouch either, both playing and singing. I think she has more Grammy Awards than just about anybody. And while great at solos, she can partner anyone, which is a totally different talent.
Guitarists from all genres bow down to Vince's playing. He's so clean, fast and tasteful.
100000% he is respected by every guitarist in every genre. The man is a monster!!!
Him and Carrie Underwood doing How Great Thou Art is MUST SEE!
Yes, Please!!!
An amazing guitarist and vocalist for sure!
Perfect reaction. I am a 6'2 245 lb man of viking blood and I had tears pouring down. Thank you.
Alison Krauss is so talented on her own and one of my favourite artists for a long time. Her voice always leaves me breathless!
Same here. Give me a happy tear to my eye and goosebumps as well
I hate that she spawned a generation of copy cats. For like 10 years, the nicest thing you could say about a girl singer was "she sounds just like Alison Krauss" People would recommend bands like "oh you'll like the singer, she sounds just like Alison Krauss" and I'm like why wouldn't I just go listen to AK? AK is the real deal. Why would anyone want to listen to a knock off?
AK's voice is so unique and beautiful. I still don't understand how a voice could be so soft and so powerful at the same time. I don't understand how that velvety softness could have so much volume. Her cover of "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton is a great example of that.
Truly one of the most beautiful songs ever sung.
FYI- I'm a 6'5" 290lb construction worker and I'm an unapologetic emotional beast.
72 years old fought wars loved good women enjoyed children circumnavigated the globe had a wonderful time been there and back and this song always brings it back to simplicity LOVE
Absolutely beautiful Appalachian harmonies - love this song.
Vince is revered for his voice, and simultaneously recognized as one of the world’s best guitar players. He is even more renown for being a good man. He is humble, kind and generous with his time. Yes, many people line up to work with him.
My mom lost her struggle with breast cancer after having beaten it once a few years prior. Unknowingly, it came back and metastasized to Stage IV all over her body. We knew she had a very short timeline, but we didn’t know how short. The entire time, she knew she was leaving us far sooner than we’d wanted. She was the strong, quiet, reserved kind of person who never let on how bad things really were. Thus, she actually moonlighted preparing all of her final arrangements for us. She died swiftly and mercifully on December 15, 2017. When this song played, I melted into a puddle of emotion because it encapsulated her fight and departure. We miss her so much, but she’s no longer feeling any pain and now standing with a new body in the presence of our Heavenly Father. She got the better deal in the grand scheme of things. Love you, mom!
They are all incredible instrumentalists also. Their bluegrass background shines thru on this song.
56 Grammy awards on that stage. 3 American master musicians. Vince is from my home town, OKC, OK. There's a statue of him in front of his high school at N.W. Classen. He is one of the all time greats of country music. Garth, Reba, Vince, among others, all from Oklahoma.
I’m not a huge country fan but Vince Gill is the tops. This song is pure magic. His voice is most definitely angelic. Mesmerizing.
One of the few songs that bring tears to my eyes every time
Same. All 3 of my brothers have passed, so this hits hard.
Thank you Vince Gill and Allison Krause and Ricky Skaggs for singing this song with Vince ❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊
Vince is the GOAT. Enjoy discovering all three of these wonderful performers.
Empathy is what allows us to truly connect. It's a gift. And a curse.
The talent of those 3 on stage is unmatched. All 3 are greats on their own.
Vince Gill has such an angelic voice. So does Allison Krauss
so does Ricky Skaggs lol. Ricky also has a high lonesome tenor voice. Vince's may be a bit more buttery, but Ricky's is real-deal appalachian bluegrass.
As much as I love Allison Krause, Patty Loveless was the original in this song. Her voice is incredible. She’s one of my all time favorites.
Totally agree...nobody does that harmony like Patty
Vince and Patty together are absolutely heavenly sounding! They compliment each other so beautifully! Vince said in an interview that Patty is his favorite singing partner! Which is saying a lot since he's married to Amy Grant and a member of the Eagles!
Patty has more power than Allison but Allison is just ethereal.
Love patty but no denying the celestial quality to Allison's voice.
Allison and Patty are both so good it would be hard to pick which is best. It is after all Patty and Vince's song so I will give this one to Patty by a nate's wing!
Vince Gill and Alison Krauss have two of the most angelic voices ever… thank-you for your incredible reaction to this beautiful song. And, please don’t ever NOT show your emotions - they definitely are your ‘super power’!!
Yes, he is a country music star, but he does much more than that! He is a world class guitarist as well. He’s been on stage with The Eagles, Allman Brothers, Jackson Brown, The Beach Boys, and on and on. Country, Gospel, and much more. One of the most beautiful male voices I’ve heard 😉😁
How could you not mention his first big turn, when he joined Pure Prairie League?
You mean AFTER the Eagles FIRST asked him to join and he TURNED THEM DOWN. @@denroy3
Vince Gill: best country voice of his generation.
Vince is one of country’s greats. A student of the great Chet Atkins, Vince can play, fast, & clean guitar, Oklahoma Borderline” is an example of his incredible playing. “I Still Believe in You” is one of my favorites, he wrote it after a fight with his first wife. He was the first country artist to be invited to Eric Clapton guitar jam concerts. If you like a big band style song “If You Ever have Forever in Mind”. His list of must hear songs is long, would luv you to do a “ What makes them them” on any of his hit songs.
Anyone who lost a loved one will certainly relate to this song.
I’ve heard this song countless times, and it gets every single time. Vince is such a sweet soul ❤
I agree. It's one of 3 songs I cannot hear without crying. The other 2 being Amazing Grace and Will the Circle Be Unbroken.
This is one of my favorite performances, period. Vince and Alison have angelic voices. My favorite Alison performance is with YoYo Ma doing The Wexford Carol. Sublime
The Wexford Carol, she sounds like an Angel singing, but doesn't she always?
I was going to bring that one up too. Such a great recording.
I can't ever get through this song without tears. Three of the greatest singers of all time.
Impossible not to love Vince, nice guy, super professional, writes awesome songs and is one of the greatest guitar players of all time
Beth- this is a bluegrass style ballad- and Celtic music is a major contributor to it. Lots of Scots-Irish people in the Carolinas and Tennessee mountains. ❤
I love your emotional reactions and that you don’t stop on every other note just to show off your technical knowledge- you’re the best!! ❤
Alison Krauss is a rare talent. Voice of an angel.
Yes finally some Vince Gill I’ve been recommending him to every vocal coach I’m subscribed to cause he’s something else
It's your emotions that make a lot of people like your videos. So, do never ever apologize for them. Real emotions tell more about a song than any complex analysis.
These 3 artists are special.
I'm not religious but bluegrass sacred music gets me every time, especially with three living-legend instrumentalists and harmonisers. Your reaction is so sincere and intimate, but also well-informed. Well done again, Beth.
I think the best showcase of Vince’s vocals is “When I Call Your Name.” But if you react to that one, it’s imperative it’s one with Patty Loveless singing the harmony. Their voices go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Yes
Pretty Little Adriana is also a good showcase of his vocals. Soft through powerful. Slow and fast.
Patty is also an amazing solo singer in her own right. She's got a powerful, twangy voice with a lot of energy.
Peas and carrots...
Vince's rendition at George Jones' funeral was simply heart-rending. He and George were very close friends. Patty Loveless carried him through that one as he was overwhelmed by the emotions of the moment. Vince was also in Pure Prarie League, and as you mentioned, the Eagles. There isn't much he can't play. Vince is worthy of a deep dive. As for this song, the best non Vince cover is by Homefree. Definitely should check it out!
And I don't think it is a good one to react to and I never listen to it. Vince crying at a funeral...and the song itself gets lost.
George's nickname for Vince was Sweet Pea, I believe.
Vince Gill is incredible. He has one of the smoothest, most soothing voices in country music and can absolutely shred the guitar. Every time I watch him perform this song at George Jones' funeral, the tears just flow no matter how many times I've seen it.
What a trio! Vince, and two Bluegrass legends. Alison has the voice of an angel. Try listening to her sing "When You Say Nothing At All", or "Just A Ghost In This House". She is just outstanding!
If there are angels on earth, Vince Gill is one.
Ethereal is the perfect word to describe Vince's voice
I am just one of the many Vince references in the beginning of this song. Lost my father to Parkinson’s just a couple years ago. I listen to this song regularly as he enjoyed country music and each time I hear it I shed a tear for the man that was as powerful to me as this song is to most. Thank you for reviewing it. I was also moved by your reception of the emotion released in the performance. Very few reaction folks have watched it and watched you take on the message. Just one of many reasons I prefer your reactions to any that are available.
These three are some of the most purely talented country music musicians to ever walk this planet.
Their ability to convey universal emotions is hard to describe but we all know it. Vince is and always has been one of the best.
I have always thought that both Alison Krauss and Vince Gill have angelic voices. This song always brings tears to my eyes.
Heard this so many times from so many performers. Three legends singing a legendary song. So tight and clean. The George Jones funeral version is utterly brutal. So much pain in the song, yet so much release. Absolutely love it. Thanks for posting this.
I love how Vince opened that version, "it's my opinion that they don't make those shoes anymore" referencing George's Who's Going To Fill Those Shoes
Hate the funeral...it's too emotional, too much crying, detracts from the song for listening and reacting. Why people want to watch someone break down at a funeral is beyond me.
Our mom lost her battle with dementia in February of this year, before her mind betrayed her she told us what she wanted when it was her time to cross the veil. She ask us to play this song as we spread her ashes in the mountains, we honored her wishes as this echoed in the trees….
Alison Krauss' violin playing is immaculate. Such sensitive bow control.
I've been a fan of Vince Gill ever since I first heard him in the early 90s. Not only did he perform this at George Jones' funeral, but he also performed it at Keith Whitley's funeral.
Keep listening to Vince Gill! He is an amazing vocalist and instrumentalist. I saw him in concert many years ago and he performed for three hours.
And he’s a great story teller on stage.
This song truly gives you cold chills, doesn't it? Vince Gill truly never got the credit he deserves. I love his music as well as Ricky Skaggs and Alison Krass they are great entertainers. I love all of them and their music. I like your video also thumbs up.
Vince Gill is one of the most genuine and friendly people you’ll even know.
When Vince Gill can make you tear up three words into a song, you know that guy is amazing....
Vince's silver, perfectly blended harmonies and stunning guitar playing when he is not the lead singer are examples of a tremendous freedom from ego and attention seeking. He is not about showing off or making a personal splash. It's about the music. He is a musician's musician.
When Vince starts, the very first note practically brings you to tears. He has such a voice!!! Then to be joined by the angels Alison Krauss and Ricky Scaggs. What can you say?
You explained your feelings with your words, but you said all you needed to say with your emotions. Great reaction to this very heart felt emotional song. Thanks and I hope you have a wonderful day!
My niece picked this as one of 3 songs for my big brother’s celebration of his life a few weeks back. I’m the one that introduced him to this song when he had never heard it before. I just about lost it. 7:26
Thanks for sharing. Take care! @@user-nv4cr8hx8e
Vince is one of the purest vocalist I have ever heard!
A truly wonderful song. This is my first time to hear it, and like you Beth, it brings tears to my eyes because of its beauty and subject. This is truly a gospel song and I adore the message behind it and the angelic harmonies. Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder both have that ability to reduce me to tears by the emotion they bring in their songs. Emotion is great but empathy is better. There are certain songs I can't sing because of the emotions that accompany them. Thank you Beth for a heart felt reaction.
Beth, these are 3 of the most talented people in the business. Also these 3 and EmmyLou Harris are probably the most sought after harmony singers by EVERYONE. They are also each among the very best on their instruments. Vince also early on was a member of the band Pure Prairie League. Alison's voice has often been described as the sound the angels make when they sing. Side note. The guy who did th singing for George Clooney in Oh Brother Where Art Thou is a member of Alison's band. Alison along with EmmyLou Harris and Gillian Welch are the 3 voices of the sirens from that movie who sang Go To Sleep Little Baby. Lots of talent on that stage. Love your reactions, and this one certainly was no exception. Oh and Home Free does a great job in their video of this song as well. Rob does aa great job singing lead on this song for HomeFree. I think he sounds a lot like Vince when he sings it.
Each one of them is amazing on their own but put them all together and it’s sublime.
My favorite country tenor ❤ I truly appreciate your vocal breakdown while also being true to your spirit.
This song has always gotten me. My father was in a gospel quartet, but passed when I was 11. He was just 41. Thanks for the memory. 💖🦋
Modern country artists can't do this. Its why many of us have left country music, because we know it can be this but isn't anymore. Powerful story and pure voices. I miss it.
On Vince, he's widely known as a world class guitar player and widely respected across genres.
These 3 people are some of the best in country music. By far. I have seen them all several times each and what great shows. You really need to hear a lady Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland. You should start with the song " Stay". She is absolutely incredible. Little lady with a big strong voice. You will not be disappointed. Please give her a chance.
Carrie underwood and vince gill how great thou art is a must see
Each of these artists are incredibly talented, being regarded as three of the finest instrumentalists and vocalists in country and bluegrass music, but where they really shine here is harmonies and with being just at home taking a spot in the background to make each other shine as they are taking the lead. You'll find all three of them on backing vocals and instrumentals for countless other artists over the last few decades, on top of their own careers as headliners. Tremendous respect for Alison, Ricky, and Vince and their ability to lift others up along the way.
This song gets me every time. My parents are aging. I know I have only so long until they're gone. So this song hits a little harder these days. Beautiful voices, all three. Love your content
It's impossible for me to listen to this and not cry my eyes out. One of the most beautiful and moving songs that I have ever heard!
I’m an emotional beast as well. I’m 65 yo and a good friend, 90 yo, told me all artists are emotional. I said, I’m not an artist, I’m a musician. He looked at me and said, same thing. I’ll never be ashamed of my emotions ever again or run from them. Man, the wisdom one can glean from a conversation with an old man. Sorry, got off topic a bit, but you had me at emotional beast. I can see and feel your emotion every time I watch your presentations and I love you for it!
Didn’t know I was going to cry today. Allison also has the voice of an angel. Two of my favorite country artists
If you think this is something, watch Vince Gill sing his classic, “When I Call Your Name”, live on the Grand Old Opry. You’ll see him bring the legend, Roy Acuff, to tears. Incredible video.
Three truly beautiful voices blend together to sing a moving tribute in accapella. I'm hard-pressed to think of a finer tenor than Vince Gill. Right there with you with the tears. 😥
There should be 320,000 likes for this song. Three incredible artists singing a powerful song. Unfortunately, not a lot of great music is created now.
A beautiful song from Vince Gill I would recommend… I Still Believe in You!
Because these three are master instrumentalists as well as singers they have the musicianship that gives each other and the listeners confidence with any piece they perform. They know exactly what they are doing at any moment and never sound forced.
I heard this song for the first time (or it at least stuck with me first) when it was played live at my dad’s funeral 11 years ago. It’s held a special place for me ever since.
His service was in a small, old wooden church not too far from Branson, Missouri where Vince Gill used to perform often when I was a kid.
I’ll listen to it every once in awhile when I need a cry.
If your eyes leak, your head won't swell. Thanks for sharing your heart along with your knowledge of the best musical instrument we use, our voices.
Very beautiful! Incredible harmonies. Three legends. Thanks for your reaction! Vince Gill was also part of the great country rock band Pure Prairie League.
This is not a "sad song". This is a song of peace and relief. This is the farewell to those who have seen and lived through the worst, but they now know peace and relief
Please listen to more Vince Gill. The studio version of the same song really shows off Vince’s vocals. He is the best male vocalist in the history of country music and deserves more reactions.
Finally! I've been dying to see you react to this. If this were the only song he’d ever written, he’d still be one of the greatest of all time. There is another astonishing video on UA-cam of Vince singing "Warmth of the Sun" by the Beach Boys. It's one of the most beautiful performances I've ever witnessed. And you are right, he is an emotional beast. That man can't talk about anything important to him without weeping.
Or "Surf's Up".... even Brian Wilson had high praise for Vince's rendition.
Thank you for your tears. They are the purest measure of reaction to this song. I cannot listen to it without having that same reaction.
This song recognizes the sadness of loss and the relief of knowing a burden has been lifted. As always the relief of that burden comes with a price. That cost is what we feel so purely here.
The Scotch-Irish roots of bluegrass and Appalachian music are evident in this song. Great stuff.
Celtic music is one of the major roots of rock 'n' roll/rockabilly...the Everly Brothers are a great example not to mention Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, etc....
You cannot listen to this without being emotional.❤❤❤
There's nothing like great harmony, vocal & instriment. Add in the heart & it's a ride you never forget.
Alison Krauss is one of the most influential persons, male or female, in Country Bluegrass. When searching for you'll see her by herself or with her band, "Union Station". She has also recorded, IMHO, the sexiest Christmas song, "Snimmy Down My Chimney".
There is no finer example of "understatement" saying more than all the words available. One of the most purely powerful songs ever written in my opinion.
Great reaction ! Doing 2 funerals today, 1 a friend, the other a fellow Firefighter, Thank you 😢
Girl, I hear you this song leaves me undone. It reminds me of my Dad, he could sing like Roy Orbison. Such a beautiful man and I miss him so much
I have lost track of how many times I have heard this song, and I tear up every single time, smiling thru the tears...Great react, Thanks so much for sharing!
Do you know that I was so moved and cried so hard at the George Jones funeral version, I couldnt listen to it for year. It was too much. George Jones is my fav country singer, and he called Vince "Sweet Pea" for years. The loss was so bad for Vince. If I have learned one thing about trying to sing is that songs that hit home or reflect an event inyour life so true, you are able to sing it better than other songs becuase you feel it. And if you feel it, the audience believes the story happened to you personally.
Beth, thank you for reviewing this song. It truly is one of the most beautiful ever written & recorded, and by 3 of the top musicians/vocalysts in Country/Bluegrass, if not the world. This song in particular is dear to me, as it is one of a select few I've used, since the passing of my wife of 32 yrs in April, to help "prime the pump" in venting my emotions gradually.
I would encourage you to explore more of the music of Vince, Ricky, and Alison. They are each master craftsmen in their own right,
P.S... Always excited whenever I see you post a new one! (and the little "Rar" art the end is sooo cute!) ❤
Mike in Texas
Since Alison Krauss did this performance...if you're looking for a really great recent Patty Loveless performance; there was a great duet at the CMAs recently of her with Chris and Morgane Stapleton performing 'You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive' that was amazing.
When you put the right Country singers together, you get the most mournful, lonely, heartbreaking sound. I love Allison, and she sounds wonderful in this performance, but, when Patty Loveless joins Vince & Ricky on this song, the tearing at your heart is multiplied many times over. Hope you take the time to view the official video with Patty. (Not the one at George Jones'funeral).
Really enjoyed your reaction AND your emotions.
Bless your heart, Beth. Thank you so very much for your wonderful videos.
Such a beautiful song. Gives me chills every time I hear.
