Hey Micheal Vince started to write this song after the great Keith Whitley died. He finished when his brother in law died in a car accident. You gotta know who Keith was... If not you tube him. Kieth was married to another great country artist Lori Morgan. Keith had a life long battle with alcoholism. Lori had to resort near the end to tying their legs together so he wouldn't sneak away when she was asleep. He died of alcohol poisoning. Two great losses for vince created this masterpiece. So sorry for your loss. Rest in the love of your wife and your faith. Keep up the good work brother.
@Vince Gill Official Inbox it would be an honor. When I call your name is one of the greatest songs ever written. And yours and Pattie Lovelace harmony are heavenly. Also I've been a fan of your wife since her touring with De Garmo and Key. Your music has always been a huge part of my life. Thanks for all you do
metal and rock try to turn the sadness to anger, but country embraces it. Nothing can get close to how sad folk/country music can be, in the best, most beautiful way.
I’ve been to many funerals that played this song it gets me every time I hear it.Sorry for your loss we all must stand by faith in Jesus and his promise that we will see them again. So it’s just see you later see you we I get there
I don’t even play guitar, but absolutely love your channel, your reviews, your enthusiasm and your insights. All of that resonates with my love of music
Condolences for your friend Adam. This song brings so many people comfort in the time of grief. I worked in the funeral industry and this song gets me e every time.
Played this song at my best friends funeral. Great song and I still can't make it through the whole thing even after 20+ years. I miss you boom. Thank you Michael for doing this song.
I love this song, my dad passed not long ago I wanted to play and sing this for him but life intervened and my blood pressure shot up and I had a stroke the same day he died. I'm ok but it screwed up my fine motor skills so at least for now I cant play or sing. Thanks for doing this I just had flash backs of how much I love my father
My favorite cousin was killed yesterday on his motorcycle. A 24 year old girl turned directly in front of him. Usually I rode right behind him. My front tire in beside his back tire. But I wasn’t there. That is why I’m here to learn this song. Thank you
Vince is one of the greatest musicians the world has been fortunate enough to have. Unbelievably distinct and incredible voice not to mention his ridiculous guitar skills. Wow.
PLEASE go and watch the version he played at the memorial service for George Jones. He falls apart while singing, and it is agonizingly BEAUTIFUL! Love your channel!!!
Great song! I lost my beautiful partner to cancer...way too young. I still grieve 6+ years later. These songs are a way to say goodbye again and again, and to express the sadness. I love your version! Thank you!
Maybe the 3rd or 4th song I learned years ago. Very simple melody and easy to play, but never failed to bring the room to a halt and get everyone listening. Of course as soon as I realized everyone had stopped talking and was listening to me, then I would forget the words :-D
Michael, it is unbelievable, to me at least ,that you released this today. I was at the Emergency Room at our local hospital last night waiting to be seen. Sitting there scrolling through my phone when a UA-cam video of this song being performed be Vince, Allison Krause and Ricky Skaggs popped up. I told my wife right there that I wanted this song to be played when I was laid to final rest. Thank you for choosing it as well.
Another amazing feature of the song is Vince’s references to his friend Keith Whitley, whose death inspired the song. “I’m no stranger to the rain” is one of Keith’s hit songs. Also the lyrics about “facing the devil” come from that song. Whitley died of alcoholism. So sorry for the loss of your friend. May he Rest In Peace.
I clicked on this and it was so perfect the way you were talking about your friend because I was just driving back to Bryon Bay from Brisbane and this old friend came to my mind who I wouldn't have seen for 30 years at least and who I'm pretty sure perceived me with the vision of Christ so saw me where I really abide and not as I saw myself. And I was crying thinking of that and then I got home and heard you speak of your friend who it sounded like you have not run into for eons because of the way things have unfolded yet you know that your relationship is TIMELESS because the LOVE and brotherhood and GIVE is always present and you met in LOVE where there is no TIME. Funny though I clicked on your link in my email box as I thought you were doing "Go Tell it on the Mountain". :)
You are absolutely right. This is the finest song ever written. Vince Gill has set the precedent of superb and outstanding vocals...melodies..and songwriting. Thank you for recognizing this beautiful song and the master who wrote and sings it.
Michael, sorry to your and your friends family for the loss. Please keep doing this series! Being on GuitarGate and following you here on UA-cam has taught me so much- that I can now understand most of what you point out. A beautiful song, a beautiful performance. I was entertained, inspired, and learned a lot! Thank you
Just subscribed to your channel. Sorry for the loss of your friend. This song was played and my Grandfather's funeral. Man, I'm a metal head, have been for over 40 years. But I do listen to different genres, this is one of the most beautiful songs composed. I do play, well did and stopped for a while. I've started back, with my son. I have an eye disease, that's taking my eyesight, so I had to stop doing(working), for almost 30 years. I'm disabled, as far as my sight. So music has become important again, well it always has been, but the participation had stopped, but have started back. I found your channel, last night. You were doing a video about Randy Rhoads, Mr. Crowley. So glad your channel popped up. Again, man, I'm very sorry for the loss of your friend. And this is a beautiful song, thanks for sharing the techniques and explaining it.
I'm sorry for your loss, but happy you'd had such a close friend. Vince sang this for his friend George Jones at his Funeral and Memorial Service. I was lucky to have seen George in a little town in Washington few years before he died. Watching Vince sing, he was crying and I was crying. It's a special song for special friends.
Hi Michael. Your channel is full of all the emotions of life. I hope everyone who watched this listened until the end. It takes balls to be vulnerable. If you didn't allow yourself to share those things, we wouldn't get to know you. Many times people who have UA-cam channels don't allow themselves to open up, and I fully understand why. Your channel, on the other hand, is enhanced by your ability to communicate with the rest of the world in an honest, open fashion. Thank you for all you are doing. May you all find peace in the loss of your friend. God Speed
Can’t believe I found this today. Just left you a post a couple weeks ago how much I enjoy your channel. This song, as all know, was written about Vince’s brother; could have been written about my brother. We lost him at 32 yrs old in a tragic drowning accident… this song came out about 2 weeks after he left us. Needless to say, it means much to my family. Thank you for doing this.
I know zero about playing guitar, piano, or anything, but just love your channel Michael. Vince Gill is special. That song gets me every time. I’m 75, just finished a documentary about the rise of Creedance. Loved it. Last night while watching a movie I instantly recognized Sturgill Simpson’s voice. Have just discovered Shakey Graves. Wow! I’m grateful that music brings me joy even if I can’t play a single note. 😋🎶 Thank you Michael . Your reactions are the best!
This song gets me every time... this was played at my grandfathers funeral and I cried like a baby hearing it for the first time... and I still cry hearing it to this day... that's a testament to the power of music... beautiful choice of song, brother!!
Beautiful song, man. During your intro I could see you were deep in thought when playing. The best country tunes have a way of stirring up something inside of us. When those harmonies kick in they tear your heart out (in the best way) Music is the ultimate healer.
Thank you so much for posting this. I love what you said about creating space and dynamics. It’s so easy to over play songs like this because people are afraid or lack confidence to sit in the space.
So sorry for your loss Michael, praying for you and your friend's family. And thank you for picking this song, absolutely awesome song by one of the best musicians/songwriters/singers of our time. Much love!
Michael, I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend. People don't always understand how hard it is to lose a friend. Vince Gill is such a good artist and this song touches our hearts every time we hear it. It always makes me think of my mother and how I miss her. Keep doing what you're doing sir, it works.
Hey Micheal You Are So Right This Is One My Favorite Country Songs Of All Time Every Time I Hear This Song It Makes Me Tear Up I Heard When He Starting Writing This Song It Was For His Brother That Passed An Then He Was Writing It For Keith Whitley Thanks For This Music
I'm so glad you reviewed this song and this artist. His abilities to write, sing, and play come from a Divine connection to the One who gives all talent. It's also to this same God that He's singing about giving rest to all who will call on Him. Love what you're doing Michael Palmisano!
@Vince Gill Official Inbox Hi Vince. I do appreciate your talent and skill at making great music. You make it look easy. I'm sure the world would do well to hear some of the original "struggles" in learning and growing your craft. I certainly would. Keep up the great work!
Hey Michael, I am so very sorry for your loss. I'm glad you mentioned Adam's name. We've heard his name and now, we'll not forget it. I wish you, your family and Adam's family all the strength you will need in this brutally difficult time. All the best.
Michael, I'm not sure you know the background to this song so I thought I'd share. Vince Gill originally wrote this song to honor a friend of his but didn't finish it until the death of his stepbrother ( who he was very close to and considered very much a blood brother) from a heart attack. His brother was in a debilitating car accident when he was 22 and suffered a traumatic brain injury and was never the same. He finished the song after he passed away in his forties. If you want to see a great video of this song, watch him sing it at George Jones funeral ( who he was very close to as well) at the Grand Ole Opry with Patty Loveless, I promise it will touch your heart. Keep up the good work on videos my friend. Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. Take care Jay Rolsten
I love the idea of this series. I hate ranking songs, but I love collections of greats and learning what makes them great. I just don't know enough, I think, to know why I think they are great. I don't know why Prine's "Far From Me" is great, I just know it is because of how it makes me feel. With this Vince Gill number, the first time I heard this was at my grandmother's funeral. It has always made me think of her. I can't separate the song from that memory and honestly I don't want to. It's sad and beautiful and keeps her in my mind.
A fitting tribute to your friend whom has gone to rest high on that Mountain.. Vince Gill's Gibson F5 mandolin may be a Lloyd Loar model, the Holy grail of mandolins. There's no finer sounding mandolin than an F5 made in the early 1920s in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. What a poignant song to pick as a tribute. My only wish, and it's small, is that you had chosen the original recording with Vince, Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs. Otherwise, perfection. Thank you.
Sorry about your friend. I lost the last of such friends a few years ago. Listening to music in my basement one night. 10 hours later he was gone. The last song I turned him on to was the old standard “How Great Thou Art”, but the version with Vince Gill and Carrie Underwood during the ACM Awards “Girls Night Out”. I told him I cry like a baby every time I watch it. He didn’t believe me. This was very early in her career and she looks so tiny, but the power she generates-I can’t remember seeing anything else like it. And in the background, there is Vince Gill, the Guitar Slinger, married to that contemporary christian singer, holding down the fort. Everything you said in your review applies here, times two. His solo, which comes off her very powerful and emotional beginning is so quiet, reverent and understated it could have only been pulled off by someone at his level. This is no ordinary crowd they are playing to either, and the cutaway reaction shots to many of country music’s best players and ending with a rousing, tear filled standing O verifies what a special performance this is. It made a believer out of my buddy Rick and although you probably won’t need a good cry for a while, I’m sure you will dig it. Cheers! The best cut here on YT is 5:42 long and posted by Peter Dennison.
Sorry for your loss, Michael. This was a wonderful tribute to your friend. I could watch videos like this about Vinve Gill all day every day. My uncle that inspired me to take up guitar so many years ago was a huge fan of Vince and he and I bonded over this kind of music. Thank you for this.
Thank you, Michael. This is perfect. Love your drop D approach. I have a Celebration of Life coming up in a few weeks. I was just starting to explore how I will perform this... and I found your post this morning. Prayers answered. Thank you. With appreciation, Stephen 🎸🎤👍
Sorry for your loss brother! Did you ever see the version that he played at George Jones’ funeral? Vince was breaking up the entire time and so do I when I watch it.
Vince Gill is such an unbelievably talented musician and singer. That voice is one of a kind.
Agreed!!
Vince Gill's voice is my "gold standard" for male voices.
Hey Micheal Vince started to write this song after the great Keith Whitley died. He finished when his brother in law died in a car accident. You gotta know who Keith was... If not you tube him. Vince and patty loveless have the best harmony’s.
For Adam, a true 🐐.
Go rest high on that mountain
God damnit Mike! This song always makes me cry.
I lost a family memeber yesterday morning. Last year my Grandma passed 2 days after my bday. I played Go Rest High at her funeral. Thank you for this
Incidentally, Vince started writing this song after Keith Whitley passed away and finished it after losing his brother.
I don’t even play guitar, but absolutely love your channel, your reviews, your enthusiasm and your insights. All of that resonates with my love of music
Keep watching, pretty soon you'll know more music theory than most guitar players.
Music is like a math problem that you can solve with only your feelings.
Me too!!!
Vince is awesome
Me too. I play trombone.
Patty loveless delivers some awesome background vocals on this as well.
Condolences for your friend Adam. This song brings so many people comfort in the time of grief. I worked in the funeral industry and this song gets me e every time.

So sorry about your loss and the stroke. Hope you continue to recover and get those motor skills back to play again.

Vince Gill is so underrated! He is so talented.
Agree he's talented. But, he has won 22 Grammy Awards, so not too underrated.
Great tune, wtg Vince!
Very sorry for your loss, man.

It is a very simple yet beautiful song.
I met Vince at a guitar show outside of Nashville Tenn and he was so nice and down to earth.
Sorry for your loss brother! Did you ever see the version that he played at George Jones’ funeral? Vince was breaking up the entire time and so do I when I watch it.
Thank you for this video. God bless you!
