This block has been around for decades, not just a Missouri Star pattern as some have mentioned, but I love the way you shuffle the blocks for the colors! I love your tutorials, thank you!
Followed your tutorial, and I now have a beautiful quilt for this winter; thank you for a wonderful tutorial…a little to warm to snuggle under it yet, it’s 100 degrees here in Virginia, but come December, it will be in use!
The quilt is stunning in the Wordsmith fabric - and I just happen to have this from several years ago. Still love it and I'm adding it to my to-do list. I enjoy all your videos here in California and thank you for sharing.
I just found your videos on UA-cam and this is the first one I watched. What great quilt pattern for quick quilts plus super quilts in a smaller size for charity quilts!!! Thanks so much- a very enjoyable video.
This is beautiful and easy! I have a patriotic layer cake and want to make a Quilt of Valor here in the U.S. I will probably put on the borders. Thank you so much for this and all your videos. I enjoy watching and listening to you.
Thank you - love the quilting idea using plates as templates - a quick easy quilt - good idea for a scrap quilt can use up all my left over bits - could use 3 and 1/2 x 10 inch and 6 and 1/2 x 10 strips as well - first new quilt for 2022 🧵🪡to do between the have to finish quilts in progress ☕️
Thank you for this wonderful easy tutorial. It is so colorful I think so fun to sew. I am going to search for a layer cake to add to my to-do list. I have just finished a quilt so this was a timely tutorial Thanks again... 🌺
I love this pattern. Your quilts are so beautiful. You have inspired me to make my own. Thank you for your tutorials. They are so easy to understand and the tips are so helpful. I always look forward to your videos.
I am really enjoying your tutorials. They are easy to follow and I appreciate the little tips and suggestions you give along the way. I particularly like this pattern and the choices you give for finishing with or without a border. I look forward to more quilt making in the new year. Happy holidays.
I have a LOT of layer cakes and love this quick and easy pattern. You do a very good job of instructions. And I didn’t see any camera swaying. Lol. Thanks.
I just love your video. I am going to made a guilt like this for my daughter. the fabric I want to sew is gaxery 🌟 stars, moon,Northern lights.thank you God.bless everyone.
I love your wonderful voice. So clear, concise, careful and not rushed. This is wonderfully simple, yet lovely. And no noise in the background to distract. Blessings and stay safe.
I have made 3 of these- one with the 3.5/6.5 measurement, one with 4/6 measurement, and one with 2 jelly rolly strips and a 5" scrap. All of them were so fun!! Thank you.
I cannot wait to make this pattern. I have a layer cake by Holly Taylor called Change of Seasons. Although it seemed rather simple, I actually made a sample to insure I knew the process. This is so exciting to try something new! Thank you your tutorial is awesome ♥️✂️🧵
This is such a versatile block but any one can make all the variations too. I've made versions where the cut widths are been different to the one shown and you can sash each section before trimming the sashed block back down to 10" . You can also sash around each block too. It looks good however you make it and using different lines of fabric also gives a different finished look. It is fast becoming my favourite block to use for my charity quilts
I do like this quilt design. Great for us with fading eyes. About gave up sewing, but I may try one more time :) I have a few layer cakes that would suit this. Thank you for a fun project.
I have made this several times. I love it because to me it shows off the fabric so well. I have done it several times in 2 colors, 1/2 light & 1/2 contrasting color. If done properly it will look similar to a log cabin arranged in the furoughs pattern.
Thank you for this tutorial. I am doing a decluttering challenge and have found a layer cake I did not know I had. This would be a fun way to use it up quickly.
Lovely!!! This is the first of your tutorials I have watched and I have thoroughly enjoyed it! Can't wait to use it with many vintage fabrics I have that belonged to my mom. So exciting.
I've made this quilt, it's the Double Slice layer cake pattern, by Missouri Star Quilt Company. Seen it done in lots of colour combinations and always looks great. Like your idea of the plates. I used a full layer cake and added 3 borders totalling 7"
Lynn, I have a suggestion for you. Rather than buy a layer cake, why not go through your stash and cut your own ten in squares. Might be interesting. I am going to try and use up some bits and pieces . Just an idea😀
@@Tadi3a that is a wonderful idea. Hadn't thought of that. I'm fairly new to quilting, so definitely will be interesting..LOL, going to hunt down some bits and pieces,as you say. Love that phrase. Thank you
You need to watch Donna Jordans new video EASY Mosiac quilt, she cuts and mixes the 10in/ layer cake sqs. in several odd shapes and sews into blocks. You will probably love it and it is easy
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial using layer cakes. I love this pattern and it looks so complicated but you make it look so easy. What are the other tutorials that you make associated with this and close to this pattern. Thank you so much
I like to cut f q's into 2x 10" squares, a strip of 5", or 4 squares, and if there is enough, a 2 1/2" strip. All broken down, to manageable sizes to use as is or cut down later. You can't put it back together without a seam allowance, but can decide and cut down more later.
What I do to shuffle it up is I have the 2 piles & on either one I take the top one & put it on the bottom. I also never stack them so two of the same color are not together in the pile.
I’ve just spotted your tutorial and am thrilled. I really enjoyed your demonstration and easy to follow instructions. Thank you for sharing all your tips. Did you hand quilt the backing as well as i did not see it. I need to make a quilt for a little girl - do you think I could use 5 inch squares - i would appreciate you input and how would you cut the 5 inch block. Calling from sunny South Africa. I will be sure to look out for your next tutorial 🌻
I’ve just sewed all my blocks NOW to put them together watched your videos over n over it there a right or wrong way to sew them I get the Ist row starting with horizon way 2nd row that’s my problem.many thanks 🇨🇦
I hope you see this comment being a year layer because I would really appreciate your opinion. I fell in love with Janet Clare’s Ahoy Me Hearties layer cake in 2017, and I’m actually going to finally make a quilt for myself with it this year (2023)!! Do you think this pattern would highlight this fabric? I think this fabric line is so beautiful, I want to be sure the pattern will make the best use of the fabric. Thank you!
Hello, this video inspired me to buy a layer cake and have a go! I am learning SO much, and enjoying most of it. However, I have a question which is probably very dim but I am a real newbie. I chain pieced strips together as you showed, snipping them apart, but now I am joining my squares together, seams are coming undone. What have I done wrong? Should I be doing something to finish each seam?
Hello Hilary - Glad we can help you on your journey to becoming a quilter. Make sure you sew to the end of your square and do a couple of stitches before your next one, and that's what you snip. That way you always have a bit of thread between the two pieces of fabric.
Hi Gloria, we used to sell Wordsmith by Janet Clare - but this video is almost a year old now, and we have sadly sold out of this range. Other companies may be selling this fabric online. We do sell other fabrics from Janet Clare here: www.thesewingstudio.co.uk/fabric/janet_clare_2.irc
One to prove I’ve finished it. Spoken like a true quilter.
Love how you explain nice and clearly. This looks a great quilt to use up some stash nice and quick and easy.

Was pleased to find this demo, but sadly, I felt like I was on a boat rocking back & forth. I couldn't finish watching as I was feeling seasick.

Love the video. Can you please tell me how you made the very fine border on the green and black quilt. I think you referred to it as a fill it. Thanks
Hi Louise, Yes the 'fillet'. We have an older video where Katrina talks through how to insert fillets:

@@SewingStudio ah, thank you, that's where I went wrong.
Just started today looking at your wonderful videos. Can you please tell me what size stitch you use when you piece . Cheers Cheryl Australia.
I love your videos. Does this block need to be squared first before sewing into rows? If yes, then what size do I square to? Thank you!
No, Katrina says it doesn't need to be squared first, it should all fit together if you lay it out as shown.
Very nice
The fabric you used for the finished green and blue quilt in the background is beautiful. Can you please tell me what it is called.
If your layer cake is not perfectly square. Will it make a difference once you square them up?
Hi, if possible can you put a link to where you got your magnifying arm that you have attached to your sewing machine.
Where can I buy the Wordsmith layer cake fabric? Thank you for the tutorial. So easy to follow for a beginner.
