A few months ago I was traveling with my mom and we decided to hit up the Whole Foods salad bar for dinner. That was when I first discovered their Garlicky Kale Salad! I was super excited to see that it did not have any oil in it. The ingredients were all simple and very similar to what we use at home. After trying it, I immediately texted Brian a photo of the ingredient list and asked (okay... told) him to try making it at home.
We started experimenting and honestly, I think we pretty much nailed it (kaled it?) on our first try! We've made it a few times now, and while I don't have the original to compare side by side, I think it is pretty darn close.

Just wanted to mention a small suggestion to try next time that I've loved along with these other ingredients is tahini. So good.
Brian has a super amazing voice like a professional voice person; very soothing and comforting to listen to you narrate through the recipe!
My grandmother taught me this growing up when we harvested greens, broccoli, lettuce, etc from the garden - soak the produce in salted water, like 1 tsp salt to 1 qt water - for 5 or 10 minutes. The bugs release from the produce. Rinse well, spin dry and you are good to go.
We will keep that in mind if we ever come across any. 😀
My grandmother taught me the same thing! It's solid info!
Doctor Greger mentioned using salt water .
@@KrocksInTheKitchenKitchen, you don't wait till you 'come across any, you always soak greens, esp broccoli and kale in saltwater, then you never have to worry about it. It is something you ALWAYS do.
@Colleen De koning I think the person was saying you don't really notice the bugs first - you're not going to come across it. But yes, everyone does their own thing.
If you want to check, get some organic kale, romaine lettuce, or red leaf lettuce, hold it up in the sun or right near a light and you'll see how many bugs are on greens - sometimes none, sometimes some, sometimes so many - living, not living - but they're not obvious without really looking. So that's why people automatically rinse them out.
Check out Ann Esselstyn’s method of stripping the stem from Kale. Hold the thick end of a stem in one hand and use your other hand to rip the kale leaf off the stem (starting at the top of the stem and rip toward the tip of the leaf). It is so quick and easy!
My gratitude for this recipe! I had a soup and salad dinner, and the soup was a Vitamixblend of kale stems, leftover spinach, leftover piece of onion, a shake of garlic powder, smoked paprika and leftover Griller potatoes for creaminess (I ran out of nutritional yeast). Mild hot soup and beautifully flavorful garlicky kale salad. Yum and yum! (and I put those stems to good use too -- no waste)..
Sounds like a good meal you had :)
Thanks for reminding me to use up leftovers in soup or stirfries, saves a heap of money and most of the fibre is in stalks etc.
You bet! Fruit leftovers too. And with Thanksgiving coming up -- bowls and bowls of leftovers. Maybe the Krocks can offer a segment on using whole plant-based leftovers. Hmmm....
It's amazing how your taste buds change!! I am all for the fresh and flavorful! 45 pounds loss for me! 👏🏻☺️👍🏻
Congratulations! That's what my 5 year old granddaughter weighs. You lost a whole kid!
@Kelly's Finally Woke Congrats on the weight loss; I'm down almost 75 pounds already. I crave real food, unlike before when I'd "diet" I would want to eat high calorie/high fat foods. But now I crave things like kale (my fav is kale with mango&pumpkin seeds and a splash of lemon juice), groats, potatoes (any type) and my current fav is apples (the honey crisp are really good, as are envy, pink lady, golden delicious, oh heck I love 'em all).
Congratulations!
Never thought I would ever like kale! Sautéed with onions, mushrooms, garlic, and a splash of balsamic vinegar! Yum!
Bravo on your weight loss, the excellent tips and meals you film for your viewers, and letting us into your wonderful home and marriage.
Looking forward to making this for my potluck salad for thanksgiving at work.
It's like you guys know what's in my fridge every time you post. I have a bag of kale in the fridge that I was not motivated to use...UNTIL NOW
"Kale'd It" slap that on a tee shirt big B
Yes!
Good to hear from you again Turin! We were hoping you were going to comment on the last video. 😀Also, I'm fairly certain somebody has already put "kale'd it" on a t-shirt. 😂
@@KrocksInTheKitchen damn. well if it isnt copyrighted, you'd probably be a thousandaire overnight... ;)
@@turinhorse Definitely. I just bought a Kale Yeah shirt for my daughter and she'd also love one that says kale'd it :)
I think it would be great with pomegranate seeds. Definitely making this dressing. Your videos are so great. As soon as I see there is a new one, I have to stop whatever I'm doing and watch it right away. Thanks!
Just discovered you and I'm seriously loving you guys!
Blanching the kale for a minute or two will also soften the kale...easier and quicker than the massage. To clean, rid the leaves of bugs and sanitize (lol)...put white vinegar into a spray bottle and spritz the kale, let set for a minute then rinse throughly with running water. I use a knife to cut out the stems...easy peasy. Looking forward to trying this dressing.
I keep my fresh kale fresh in a glass of water on my fridge door shelf, I trim about 1/2 inch off the stems so water can get sucked into them. I clean and use the kale one stem at a time. Keeping the stems in water makes it krisp and it keeps much longer. I strip off the leaves in one big pull, then tear them up and massage them. I have never seen bugs in my kale. I dry it on a towel before de-stemming. Thanks for the recipe looks yummy. I need to get liquid aminos which they now have at my Walmart.
This is very very delish! I steamed my Kale & put the dressing on it...it was amazing! Thanks for figuring out another tasty dish!
I cannot express enough how much I love your videos. The more I watch, the more I love them all! You guys are sooo funny, sweet, honest, motivating.
It's amazing how Brian has the idea to see a dish one time and then perfectly recreate it. He's like a copy ninja (in the kitchen). Nice shirt, by the way.
I watched this yesterday and kinda smiled at just how much people don't like kale because it's so darn hard to chew. At my age (71) I have to be careful I don't break my teeth, so I've learned a trick about kale. If you wash it and dry it and THEN stick it in the freezer .. when you take it out and crush it in the bag you stored it in, it makes smaller bits and is softer. I actually use the recipe you just described, but warm it on the stove (or in the microwave) to soften it even more. You don't have to cook it all the way, but if you do want the cooked version, don't throw the water away. Drink it or use it for a stock. There's a winter recipe here in Holland called hutspot or stamppot where they mash kale in with boiled potatoes and cover with gravy. I have my own version of that because I add all kinds of other veg to the pot and mash that together with the spuds (thus the name I guess). Of course, I also zap it into a porridge and mix it in with my soup base. Gives you all the vitamins and none of the toughness. P.S. Have you ever tried the homemade cashew or silken tofu type of ranch dressing? 🌹
I’ve made this several times. My non-vegan family love this dressing. Tonight I added some quinoa (cold). It was so yummy.
I made out today, good prep lunch. I love this. I don't live near Whole Foods but one of the few times I went there, I had a sweet potato Black bean chili. Now I make it at home.
Thank you for the deliciousness.
#washingkale get a very large bowl or pot or use a clean sink and cover kale with water and swish.... like a washing machine. Pour out water and do it again until you fill comfortable that it's clean.
Try it with Dino kale. Much easier to clean
Scriptures Veggies and Thimbles yum I love Dino kale
I'm rewarding my tough school week with one of the leafy bowls at my local high raw, gluten free, plant based eateries tomorrow! Going back as an adult, with toddler when home, on an accelerated course nearly took me down. Love those greens!
Not a a fan of kale but will definitely give this a try! You two are so fun to watch and are clearly "kaleing it in the kitchen"!
I bought kale today and ordered nutritional yeast because you guys got me so pumped about this recipe! My family and I already eat suuuuper healthy(I think?) but I need to step and think outside the box. So thank you guys for some fun inspiration. My own weight loss adventure was a period between 18-20 years ago so I have found my thing but I am really enjoying your story and fun videos about your adventure and yummy food!
Yum! I can’t wait to make it! The Esselstyns have some great clips on kale too!
Love your garlic tip--I have never heard of that before! The salad looks delish! Thanks again for another great video, guys!
I love this so much. I made it once and now I find myself craving it. Great work reverse engineering the dressing!
I just love how real you guys are! Thanks for addressing your missing video last week! I didn't comment but I sure missed it! Glad it was missing for a happy reason; happy belated birthday, Jessica! Thanks for admitting you're not crazy about kale, Brian. This video makes me willing to try it again! Not just the recipe, but the honest tutorial about how Jessica prepped it, and her advice to buy the bunch instead of the bag. Thanks for all you guys do!
Can’t wait to try this ❤️ thank you!
If you use the flat side of your knife to smash the garlic cloves, the peel comes right off ☺️
I do a kale salad with lemon juice, a little honey, sesame seeds. Then add smashed chickpeas, red peppers chopped, chopped cooked potato, vegan mayo and mustard, chopped dill pickles. Addicted. If you massage the kale, the chopped stems come loose as you go and you can pick them out.
Thank you so much for this recipe! It has changed mine and my mother’s lives. We love love love it!
Also I want to say your videos have given me the boost I needed to go back to a whole food plant based diet. So thanks.
Another Dr Gregor thing, he looked into studies on kale- and it turns out Kale is so wonderful bc of the fact that steaming it in the instant pot actually increases the nutrients available. One of the rare foods that does this. I’ve found myself chopping it and adding to spaghetti/pizza sauce and of I chop it enough my kids don’t know it’s there. For me, knowing that it’s better cooked, and how good it is for my mood I’ve tried incorporating kale in many things like soups, pasta dishes.... etc.
another thing I’m not sure I’ve shared with you guys is that I actually have only lost like 45 lbs and that’s about half of my weight loss goals, but I have have completely got off antidepressants/anxiety prescriptions that I’ve been in since I was about 18. And I also can trace back clinical depression to about 10 years old. And this happened in a matter of about 6 months of plant based. So mood and gut connection is a huge part of my testimony for this lifestyle, and one more reason I won’t go back. Hope this helps bc kale is easily the best replacement for spinach when cooking, but still so good in salads like this one. You can’t go wrong. Your brain remembers how much you like it and somehow we end up addicted to greens. Okay guys love this video and can’t wait for next week!
I just searched 'oil-free vegan Kale Salad dressing' and found this recipe. Made it and it is a keeper! I am going to try adding a tbsp fresh squeezed orange juice
This is so DANG good. I added a little tahini and vegan Worcestershire for a total kale Cesar vibe. Amazing with watermelon radishes.
Thanks for pointing out how much easier, fresher and tastier it is to use the fresh bunches of kale than the bagged stuff. I always knew it on a subconscious level I guess but since you articulated it it makes so much sense and I’m never going back.
I just picked a bunch of kale from the garden today.. I am making this tomorrow for sure! Thank you for the videos! Great recipes!!!
My husband said the kale is too much work, so we are going to try this mixed with raw broccoli. So excited!
Thanks for a great redo recipe. This recipe would also make great dehydrated kale chips. I recently got a Samson stainless steel dehydrator and have been looking for some great recipes. This one kale'd it!
Ohhhhhh, I am SO making this❣️ Thanks Jessica for discovering this and Brian for figuring it out. 😋
I almost checked on you guys, but I figured you deserved a break. My birthday was the 15th Jess, we’re both November bdays!!! Happy Birthday :) okay about the kale and the dressing, YUM! I’m excited to try it, and also excited to try the dressing on a romaine like some sort of a lemon vegan Caesar. Kale and other greens- nobody really likes them, but when we eat them our stomachs are so pleased that the messages passed to our brain is all positive. It’s all that fiber. Plus it’s so nutrient dense. I’m remembering a video Dr Gregor did about the mood gut brain relationship. For sure greens are like number one for a happy life.
Washing my kale..... so I eat all those stems when I buy it pre washed. But when I buy the whole kale I do the trick that the Essylstien girls (ladies) showed on their UA-cam page. Jane Essylstein I know I’m spelling that wrong.... that essentially just hold it out in front of themselves and pinched it while tearing it quickly. Mine has never had bugs but it seems to be like muddier than any other produce. And I wash it in a colander with running water, and yes I kind of massage it while cleaning it. Also can’t comment without talking about your Hello Kitty salad spinner!!!!!!!!! I love it. Hello Kitty that girl has everything, even salad spinners. Haha haha
There's a Dutch dish where kale is mashed together with potatoes, it's delicious! When I grow kale and it's the end of the season, I rinse it and then freeze the whole leaves and stalks. When I take it out of the freezer it's easy to crumble it off of the stalks and add it to stuff.
Your videos are charming but at the same time professional. You are both adorable. Thankyou from Australia 🐨 👌 💕 💕 💕
I agree, the salad spinner is cute and it works. Thanks for the recipe, especially the oil free dressing. I will make this tonight.
Try pouring boiling water onto the cleaned kale then immediately cool it off with cold water or a ice bath if you want to be fancy. This helps break the kale down easier and the dressing sticks to it better. It’s also a pretty bright green.
I think when Jessica sings as she eats is adorable! You both are! ❤️❤️❤️ thanks for your great videos!
Fresh lemon and garlic are game changers!
This is by far my favorite salad right now. Ate the entire bowl myself last night! Didn't add Chickpeas.... just pure kale yumminess. Don't leave out the lemon zest! So so good!!😁
Jessica, I understand because I'm also extremely OCD when it comes to fruits and veggies. I just usually soak my produce in a huge bowl filled with cold water. I have a big white bowl I call my veggie bowl lol. After it soaks for about 20 mins, I'll rinse everything off individually and double check it. I don't want to eat dirt, bugs, or grime either. While it soaks, I walk away and do something else. It seems to work for me. Hope this helps. :) Btw, thank you guys for the garlic tip!! I actually have 3 full bulbs to peel today and that will save me major time.
I haven't been using fresh kale. Only frozen, chopped, and including it in my one dish meals. Now, I have to try this, so will have to buy some fresh. The dressing sounds great. A little thick for me. If there's anyone else out there who never got used to the thick, milky dressings. Here's a tip. Use the cooking liquid (Aqua Faba) from the garbanzos to substitute for oil. It has the exact mouth feel of oil, so can be a good to thin some recipes, and use as an oil substitute in any oil and vinegar dressing.
Making this second time this week. Already can’t wait for lunch tomorrow 😊😊
I'm so making this. I need ways to get more greens.
I grow kale in my greenhouse which is so much more tender than the big bunches in the grocery store. It's November in the PNW and my kale is still growing! Very hearty and easiest to grow.
I need to try this.
Same here in the PNW, kale is still going strong in the garden, really looking forward to giving this recipe a try.
CANNOT WAIT TO MAKE THIS!! Last time I was at a Whole Foods I had this in my salad and LOVED IT. You two are always making my life better ❤️🙂❤️
My Whole Foods in Canada makes this same salad but with tahini as well! Really good!
This looks super yummy! I work at Whole Foods in prep foods department so I've made this a few times. The recipe we use has tahini in it as well. It's really delicious but maybe it would make it more calorie dense? Not sure. Gonna def try this version👍😁
Kale tip: strip leaf from stem by grasping the stem in one hand and pinching the leaf in the other, pull the stem stripping the leaf away. I generally wash the leaves under running water while whole, strip the stems, then drape the leaves across my dish drying rack to drip dry while I prep the rest of the meal/dish. My fav ways to eat kale are sautéed w/ sliced garlic and red pepper flake, in hash w/ potatoes and black beans, in smoothies, and in mashed potato. I think the best use for those bags of pre-washed, pre-chopped kale is cooking or smoothies where it won't matter if there is a little of the stem still on.
Can’t wait to try this!! Jessica, I love your so-called “weird tangents!” You are thoughtful and passionate!! And that’s awesome 😎 PS I go on “weird tangents” too. 😁
Oh my word. SO good!
I had some carmelized onions from dinner, so I warmed them a little and threw them on top, as well as the last small handful of arugula. 🤯
To clean kale or any lettuce for that matter, I always soak it in a big bowl of water and slosh it around in it then on to the salad spinner. Looking forward to trying this recipe! Thanks!
I can't wait to try this! I love garlic and I'm on a kale kick.
Came for the dressing. Amazed by the garlic peel hack!!!😳😳😳
Looks delicious! I am such a variety fiend so I might be tempted to add some mandolined radishes, sliced green onions, and maybe some black sesame seeds on top. Thanks for figuring this out for us!
I use ACV (apple cider vinegar) in a dedicated tub full of water to wash my kale. I have a dedicated veggie brush to help clean it.
Jessica, I’m similarly wired with regard to gross or scary stories. I support your right to not be exposed to that nonsense.
Thank you for the recipe! I love kale, and I love the idea of kale salad and your dressing looks like it will be very all purpose.
I’ve never seen bugs in mine! Growing it is easy too. I like to wash it and rub the leaves, dry in rolled up tea towels, then put into large sealable plastic bag, with a paper towel and it keeps for 5 days. You can take the stems off before putting it in bag.
This looks delicious! We usually cook our kale in the oven with nooch to make nice 'cheesy' kale chips but I'm definitely going to try this as a salad base.
I love kale :) we grow it in our garden!!!! This looks really good too, I will totally be making this soon. I also hate bugs in my kaleor anything else ewww. I put it in my tofu scramble too its so tasty in a south west style scramble with red capsicum, onion, diced potatoes and spices. I just put it in towards the end and its amazing!! Plus you can make it ahead add in avacado and put it in a tortilla like a breakfast burrito and put hotsauce/picante sauce on top
To get rid of any "bugs" Jessica was speaking of here's a small trick. When you get your kale, fill the sink (or a large bowl) with cold water and throw in a bit of vinegar, put the kale in and soak the Kale for 10/15 minutes. Rinse your Kale after removing from the vinegar water and use as you wish.
Thank you for the "massage the kale" tip. I have been avoiding kale because it is so leathery, thick and tough. I'll give this a try.
Kale stems are not only edible but I've heard they have way more nutrients than the leaves. Can't wait to try this on the kale I have waiting in the fridge :)
I massage my kale with lemon and put in a container to keep all week. Then I add it to my sweet leaf salad. I also cut up a big container of red cabbage, cauliflower, and brocolli that I add to my salads. Yummy
Thanks for sharing this. Our Whole Foods garlic kale has oil so this was exciting to try, and delish!
Another kale dish is Kale Chips! Make a flavorful dressing and dehydrate or bake at low temp for 10 minutes and check frequently! Yum! So yummy!!
This is very similar to a recipe I make called Copycat Kale Cafe Salad, named after the salad served at Kale Cafe located here in Daytona Beach. I’m excited to try your version!! 😋
My air-fryer has a food-dehydrator mode and I'd like to put this stuff in there for a little while and see if it would make good kale-chips.
Clever tip with the micro plane. I zest fresh turmeric into my oatmeal every morning. Definitely changing my technique!
Really great video, you guys! This looks super delicious. A full video of said dressings maybe? That would be so helpful!!!!!
Garlic presses are the absolute best! This recipe looks amazing!
I agree. 😀
@@KrocksInTheKitchenWhat press is that? I broke my last one by pressing too much too hard.
Excellent idea for using the microplane Brian! 🎯‼
You will at some point find bugs in any veggies or fruit. Put the veggies in a big pot of cold water and they will float to the top and you can get rid of them easily. I love kale salad! I have had it many ways. I will try your dressing!
Going to try this one for sure. Thanks for the peeling garlic tip also!
I have made this almost exact kale salad but I also add some tahini to it. Super creamy and delicious. You should try it! 😊
I loved the video. I have a garden full of kale and mustard greens. Do you guys have any good ways of using mustard greens? I have been putting kale and mustard greens in the instant pot with sliced onions, garlic, veggie broth and coconut amino and cook on manual for 5 minutes.
I just made the Garlicky Kale and it tastes great!!! Thank you for sharing the recipe. I know Kale is good for you, but it has such a bitter taste. Making it this way, not only can I eat it, bit enjoy it too. Keep up the good work on your weight loss "adventure". I love watching your videos and I'm on the same diet too!! 👍😎🍎🍏
Great recipe. I'll probably chop it more. I never discard the stems. I put them in my smoothie cup and process and eat them raw. Mixed in a WFPB healthy kale smoothie I never notice them and get lots of good fiber!
Cut the kale stems off with a ceramic knife, use the stems in smoothies (lots of nutrition in them) or cut up thinly for soups and salads, raw or cooked, and to make the kale immediately edible, finely slice it one way, then crossways and do that again. You can massage it or not by then as the knife actually did the massaging via the cutting.
Really enjoyed the bean chilli and the kale salad. Keep up the good work! :)
Looks delicious and I love the Hello Kitty salad spinner. Adorable!!
Jessica really loves that thing. 😀
I love anything Hello Kitty ❤🙋
I can’t wait to try this!
Now I want kale 🙂. I follow Fuhrman’s way to get kale off the stems. Then rinse massive leaves, then chop. I usually cook it: onions mushrooms garlic chopped kale than some Craisins on top or black beans on top. It’ll be nice to have my kale cold. By the way, no bugs in my kale but then I’m in Alaska.
I wash all my greens in the largest pot of water I can. Swish around really well and then rinse in a colander. I pretty much examine each leaf. I try to do a very large amount at a time to make it more efficient. It may seem like overkill to some people, but it makes me happy to eat my greens.
My relatives seriously have a bug light. They put it on the counter, then put each piece of lettuce or other leafy green on top of it - It shows so many bugs, it's amazing (I had no clue what was going on in greens).
@@EMunaBee Are the bugs harmful or just extra protein?
@@CassieDavis613 I've been vegan for my whole life but still not sure my stance on bugs when it's about veganism.
My relatives with the bug light have very strict religious dietary restrictions in which they don't eat bugs at all, any kind - they even have a special filter for their water for tiny bugs - so when I'm with them, I'm terrified to be the one with the once seemingly easy task of washing greens, making a salad. It used to be all I really knew how to make. Eleven year old salad making genius here.
But it's a few years after that, I respect them - and I tried to opt out but they say they trust me. It's not complicated but I don't want to go against the beliefs. Interestingly, they are definitely the kind of people who if they didn't have the religion would say "extra protein," also probably not even wash greens at all, maybe a rinse. Maybe.
I didn't realize the Kale there doesn't have oil. That's awesome! It's my fav.
This is the best kale salad dressing.
Very good, and I'm going to use baby kale too..thank you too for sharing! God bless!
GREAT garlic peeling hack .
Great dressing, and I used it on waaay less kale. It makes a good starting base, too--try adding ginger and/or chile flakes--and works on many veggies, like cukes, zucchini, tomatoes, celery, radishes....
Just made this and it is so awesome!!!!
Jessica literally made it an hour ago as well. 😀
Absolutely delicious! ❤
Just made this, sorry Brion, but I used bottled lemon & garlic, and it tastes amazing. It can even make kale taste good.
To remove the leaves from kale, I just do what Ann Esslestyn does, hold the kale upside down and strip it quickly by pushing the leaves off in one second. Couldn't be easier. On UA-cam, search for Ann Esslestyn - stripping kale. Thanks for the great dressing recipe. Will use it on other greens as I am also not a fan of kale.
Can't wait to try this!!!
This is also good warmed up.
Than-q for sharing your continued hard work and creativity with us. You are one of a very few couples working together to prepare and eat a WFPB life successfully and putting yourselves in front of the lens to help people make positive choices and changes in their lives.
Regarding this particular recipe, considering the inaccessibility to Wholefoods for millions around the globe and often assumed/perceived high prices for those who do have access to one, so very many would never have seen or heard of this salad. Add in a known or assumed dislike of kale and this particular video has the power to help so many. Given the fantastic nutrient profile of kale, most can benefit from including it into their woe. There are some who need to eat kale in moderation or not at all due to health issues but most of those people should be aware of their restrictions.
Keep being the rock stars you are. Every time you turn your lens to focus on your faces you are creating change in your own unique ways. Yours are kind, fun, funny, loving, gentle and ever-shrinking footsteps you are leaving imprinted into the sand that is this adventure we call life. The world is a far better and more peaceful place for having your open minded, nonjudgmental selves in it!
Have a supercalifragilistic day!
With peace, gratitude, grace and light! XO
Looks simple and great! Thank you!
