Oh great thank you! Yes sometimes is disheartening seeing the crap that goes viral, but then I remember all the people I am helping and I am motivated again. :D
@siwuz84 He did point out that other greens (like spinach) have oxalic acid which can be problematic. Hard to respect that you say " He never ever informed his viewers about the potential risks ..." when he did that. Maybe your strong antiveggie bias made it difficult for you to hear. That might prevent you from hearing things that could be good to know. If your nutritional beliefs fail you in the future, remember the alternatives.
@siwuz84 I agree that "vegan" does not really describe a diet, more what one DOESN'T eat. Coca cola and potato chips is vegan, but hardly healthy. I eat "whole food plant based, low SOS (salt oil sugar)" and try to include fermented stuff like sauerkraut, combucha and bread and a big portion of what I eat is cooked. Some people say that meat was what allowed us to develop our brains, but I find that the discovery that we've been cooking much longer than previously thought supports that COOKING was the big change that helped us get the nutrition/energy needed. (It could let us get MORE out of plants and also make meat, which in raw form is not very tempting for herbivores like us :-), into something we could eat) There are 10 times as many cells in (the bacteria) in our gut than in the rest of our entire body. They make many essential things that we need to be healthy (for immun system) and happy (for our hormones). They can and do use fiber. Smoothies can have many advantages, but one disadvantage is that least nourishment is left for the bacteria! I don't know if you checked ua-cam.com/video/NMN1Zo_c7_A/v-deo.html , but you haven't mentioned it. It is about a lot of different signs that we are basically herbivores. Several things in it were new for me. Please give it a look and if you find errors point them out. Otherwise embrace the herbivore sides of yourself! :-)
@siwuz84 The human body is amazingly able to adjust to so many different situations. Though I think that most people think that humans used more animal stuff than we did historically (and prehistorically), I'm thankful that humans have been able to eat meat in difficult situations, esp far from the equator, but that doesn't make it the best food (though it is better than nothing when you're starving). You continue to write "We are omnivores after all,". Have you checked the video I linked to? I hope you will. Do you see any errors in it? I have during some periods eaten raw eggs, gone back to "real butter" and haven't felt any radical changes in how I feel. I've basically been able to "eat anything" most of my life without any acute problems. I do feel that the changeover to whole plantbased food was an important part of being able to get my weight down where I wanted (From BMI 26 to around 21-22) without any calorie counting, portion control, hunger. (Though eating connected to emotional stress is a very important factor). Glad that you feeling good on what you are eating. Glad that there is the whole plant road for you to try if things change for you. The most common death type in US is heart attack. Unfortunately there are many people that feel fine and have (so called) "normal" levels of colesterol etc. but have a intense heart attack that kills them, before they can try changing their diet. we don't have bacteria in our stomach like herbivores do, which is needed to break down fiber. We only have bacteria our gut, like many apex predators. GG vegans
@Cthulhu According to whom? XD That statistic is smelly like it came out of your ass. BTW what's a cranist? An all cranberry diet? You misspelled the punchline XD
@Cthulhu This study certainly covered many people but it is not really accurate since the average person is not healthy. Certainly, a vegan diet is better than a processed food heavy diet. Fiber has benefits and it has cons, as does any non-essential nutrient. Again, we don't have the necessary bacteria to turn fiber into fat as ruminants can. Being in ketosis, however, grants the same benefits as fiber. There are no studies outright comparing a ketogenic diet to a vegan diet, unfortunately, but one can simply research both the benefits of fiber and ketosis to see the similarities. Science will always be behind because it aims to be precise and truthful so as an ex-vegan, I have no choice but to trust my own biofeedback. I've tried veganism for 2 years and now carnivore. Can you say the same?
@Cthulhu You're gonna have to find it for me because last time I checked we pass it out. Even soluble fiber isn't digestible, it only soaks up water and turns into a gel-like substance, useful for passing toxins through and out the digestive tract. That's interesting, was the meat grass-fed/no antibiotics? Did you it eat raw, lightly cooked, or well done? Diarrhea makes sense because the stomach flora always have to adjust to large dietary changes but a fever is surprising. It doesn't make sense to get a fever unless perhaps you've developed some kind of allergy to meat. A fever isn't something I can pinpoint with any certainty though, unfortunately.
I had a massaged kale salad for lunch today, along with many other veggies, and it was amazing. I love eating my kale this way. People at work think I'm weird because I'll bring in my kale in a large freezer storage bag and squeeze it on my lunch break HA! Greens for the win.
Just wanted to say thanks for the free meal planner! I've always struggled with going full vegan due to things like .... cooking. Seeing your simple layout for building meals has been a huge help in changing my mindset from "Holy cow, look at that stack of fruits and veggies! This is going to take hours." to like "Ya. I could throw something together in a few minutes." Really appreciate it!
So yummy, thanks for so much info Derek! I love to freeze kale, it breaks down the toughness nicely, and keeps it from going yellow, too. I'll have to use those stalks in soup, better than tossing them in the compost. I love this new food series!!
I like to use the stems, they have alot of nutrients and are filled with water, giving a nice crunch to the dish. After de-stemming, cut all the stems into small pieces and add them to the leaves. Tastes great!
I like to wash and chop a bunch of kale and keep it in a container in the refrigerator to add to soups, make a quick salad, or whatever. A lot of the good compounds in kale are produced from a chemical reaction between the enzimes and other parts of kale when it is crushed, so the massaging actually helps it to be even better for you. The enzimes are destroyed by heat though, so it is good to crush or massage it and give it some time for that reaction to happen before heating it in soup or a stir fry. Thank you for your inspiring videos!
I have to try eating more Kale. I only like spinach. You can hide spinach in any and everything and never know. :-) You should do a video on health foods that you love, but isnt available to you.
I noticed Korean recipes massage vegetables with some salt. It extracts that bitter liquid better. I do with julienned root veggies like carrots, daikon, and parsnips. Later, you can pour off the liquid.
I am so happy that you brought up the health issues also. So many of the so called healthy experts talk about some or other plant as if they are the solution to all health issues and ignore the negative aspects of that plant.
YES! You have no idea how many stores I went to to get good tahini for this video. I found one brand I liked and the store stopped carrying it. All the stuff we get around here is so gritty and dry. What is up with that? How is it that the Middle East are the only ones who know how to grind sesame seeds properly?
One thing I do with the stems is simmer them for a few minutes with water, and steep it like tea with with lemon balm, lemon juice, and fresh ginger. Add agave or coconut sugar to taste!
I grew collard greens and cantaloupe and I grew spinach the best stuff nothing better than fresh fruit and vegetables I did tomatoes my mom and dad and husband and I had a huge harvest this year ! Tomatoes are the best off the vine! We grew corn too best ever food and the cantaloupe was so good juicy it literally was like nothing I’ve ever tasted before heavenly tasting! If you had doubts about making a kale video or it being helpful then you came to the right decision, as it very much was.
Have you tried growing & using Wild Garlic? That's a super-tasting weed local to me, grows in shady, damp locations and spreads well. I pick leaves from early April through June and use them cooked or raw. The seeds are edible and can be mixed in/rolled onto bread dough. The bulbs are mild flavoured, much better for those of us who don't care for the more pungent supermarket type. I know the bulbs can be roasted and stored in oil, but don't know of a suitable oil-free way of storing them. Will have to start experimenting there!
Wait.. there are people who actually don’t like kale? 😮 I love it! I usually just steam cook the leaves, squeeze lemon and add herbal salt. 👌 Here in Sweden I’ve only seen one or two kinds. Before it was only available around Xmas - used as garnish around flesh... I was diagnosed with goiter in the mid 90s, saw a lump on the side of my throat one morning. 😤 Man, I’m def making that recipe!! 👌Thanks! Great video! 👍🙂

Dino kale is definitely my favorite. I usually just rinse it w/ boiling water straight from the kettle while holding the kale leaves by their stems, so that I don't burn my fingers (ouch)), then "squeeze-massage" salt into it w/ my fingertips, & then add it to my daily salads. Add some avocado & other favorite greens (red leaf lettuce, brocolli, frisee lettiuce, spinach) & veggies (tomatoes, cucumbers, red cabbage), w/ the final ingredient being warmed up chickpeas, & find that no dressing is required (avocado makes for a perfect creamy dressing). Thank you for giving us a brief history of kale; I found it super interesting. Another great thing I learned from your video is that the darker/greener the kale , the more nurtitious it is. Oh, and lately I've also been using date juice (by leaving the date flesh in the boiled water for about 10 mins) in lieu of maple syrup to mix w/ other ingredients to make sauces. Peanut butter sauce made from stiring slightly warmed up in the pan garlic & aminos, then mixed in w/ the date "juice" (or maple syrup/coconut sugar) & peanut butter straight from one of those machines that squeeze your peanuts (w/no added salt & oil), salt & optional Bragg's apple cider vinegar is pretty tasty.
WOW! I've never seen kale massaged that much before. But, hey, you are the nutritionist so... I'm going to follow your lead. So happy the kale didn't die while I was away helping family. That and some jalapenos are the only things that survived while I was gone. Southern Arizona. It's harsh. My husband and I would rather be in a colder climate. But this is where family is. Anyway, I put some kale in my soup last night at the very end and it was the best. Love the salad. I would add roasted garlic to it, Like a whole head of it. I could see myself adding that dressing to roasted veggies like sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, etc.

we don't have bacteria in our stomach like herbivores do, which is needed to break down fiber.
I guess I'm lucky because I love kale!!!! I just cooked some lentils with kale!!
I had a massaged kale salad for lunch today, along with many other veggies, and it was amazing. I love eating my kale this way. People at work think I'm weird because I'll bring in my kale in a large freezer storage bag and squeeze it on my lunch break HA! Greens for the win.
Well, you got me wanted to buy some kale now!! Nice job.
I use avocados and lemon pepper instead of dressing. And also seeds like pumpkin and sunflower. So good!
Baby kale is also another easy to digest option, that’s what my digestive system prefers lol! 🥬
1:25 lol. Awesome video, Derek! Loving these food series
I really really like the fact that you are searching and you're sure of what you're saying...
Really enjoying these videos! Planning on trying the kale recipe this week that you shared
Thanks for the awesome information. Would love to see the Oil free Kale chips recipe!
Deep Desai Im interested on that too
The best explanation of goitrogens I’ve ever heard and I’ve had thyroid issues for 20 years. Thanks!
Perfect video as I just made a kale salad with sweet potato and tempeh
I am so happy that you brought up the health issues also. So many of the so called healthy experts talk about some or other plant as if they are the solution to all health issues and ignore the negative aspects of that plant.
The consistency of the tahini is healthy crazy cool approved
YES! You have no idea how many stores I went to to get good tahini for this video. I found one brand I liked and the store stopped carrying it. All the stuff we get around here is so gritty and dry. What is up with that? How is it that the Middle East are the only ones who know how to grind sesame seeds properly?
@@Simnettnutrition I cant find tahini anywhere in my city
@@leejohnston3633 you could try to make your own
One thing I do with the stems is simmer them for a few minutes with water, and steep it like tea with with lemon balm, lemon juice, and fresh ginger. Add agave or coconut sugar to taste!
Massaging the kale is a game changer! I wish a knew that sooner :)
Never have tried growing kale thanks for the next year garden idea! 😀
Nice T-Shirt and of course nice Video as always! 😊😃
Derek luv your salad and your dressing. I sauteed some of the leftover kale with the dressing and almonds, and enjoyed it with some white rice. Delicious. Even my kiddo enjoyed. Thank you. i am grateful for you.
Love kale! Thank you for the salad idea. Please review soy or chickpeas next.
Hey Derek! your Russian fan is here))) I really enjoy new format of your vids! you are AMAZING!!!! THANK U SOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR HARD WORK and for keeping us educated!!!
Thank you!
Thank you for all the great content...
It is very inspirational!
I eat it daily...from my garden...chopped fine raw...heard that cooking destroys most of sulphorafane(spel?)...stopped my roasting it...needs to be crushed like garlic for best health benefit to be maximized...TY, Learned alotttt! Also will soon ferment some for probiotic values...with organic cabbage etc vegetables ixed in.
People saying raw kale is disgusting I actually like it
Me too ❤
I eat massaged kale in a BIG bowl with mashed avocado, lemon pepper, raisins (or currants or Craisins)and raw sunflower seeds for crunch. I eat it slowly to get maximum benefit.😋
super cute and well done vid - thanks for what you are doing!!
I am so grateful for your channel. This is the best kale video I have seen. I can’t wait to try this and save some money on all the kale chips I buy. Thank you so much. You are a blessing.
Love your informative videos! Keep it up! 🤗
Great video! My favorites on my kale salad are diced tomatoes, red onion, chickpeas and sunflower seeds. And I always top it with Tahini dressng, too! I'm going to try your dressing next time, though. Thanks and your kitty is adorable!
Derek, are there any differences in nutrition between baby kale and "full size" kale? Thanks for the awesome video. I will definitely massage my kale salad next time!
OMG! I saw this video today. I already had the ingredients in my stash & had kale on hand too. Made the sauce & it is AMAZING!!
These videos are fantastic! I never even heard of messaging kale before and it is a great alternative to cooking! Plus you both are so funny! Thanks for doing this research for us too👍
This is a great series Derek! And upping your editing game too! 👍🏻💪🏻 Looking forward to more videos! Thank you
I bought a pack of mixed kale seeds and all of them grew all winter even my dino kale. Kale is awesome and thanks for the info
Looks like im loading up on kale next grocery haul.
Yay these videos are working!
OMG, that dressing! I doubled it, one batch wasn’t enough. I also put in grated garlic and cayenne pepper. Thanks!
I am jealous. Where I live in Germany you can just buy one variety of frozen kale. Maybe I should go to the farmers market more often and see if I am lucky.
You could try to grow it yourself!!?
Making me hungry hearing the kale crunchiness! Looks yummy! All those wonderful vitamins and minerals ! Yummy!
I'm curious why at least 4 people dislike this video... great job, bud!!
You can massage mashed garlic, avocado, lemon juice and salt. Delicious!
Steamed kale is my favourite! I could eat just that all day 😅
Duuuude. The last 3 weeks. You've been answering questions I have had in my mind, with videos either next day or same day. Spooky. Breaking up with coffee, and how to get more kale in with cooking methods. Madness. Your my hero Derek. Keep it up. If you had doubts about making a kale video or it being helpful then you came to the right decision, as it very much was.
Anyone else addicted to raw, red onion and garlic with their kale salads?! 😎🌱🌦
yum!
I have sooo much kale growing in my garden, so this was an important video for me to watch. Thanks!
*Kale addicts browsing the internet for iodine rich foods in their region*
Just sprinkle some seaweed on top: www.limafood.com/en-gb/product/salade-du-pecheur-flakes-shaker
2 teaspoons gives you 150mcg of RDA for iodine! :)
Wait.. there are people who actually don’t like kale? 😮 I love it! I usually just steam cook the leaves, squeeze lemon and add herbal salt. 👌
Here in Sweden I’ve only seen one or two kinds. Before it was only available around Xmas - used as garnish around flesh...
I was diagnosed with goiter in the mid 90s, saw a lump on the side of my throat one morning. 😤
Man, I’m def making that recipe!! 👌Thanks! Great video! 👍🙂
Love theese series!! I would love to see oats. I eat like 2 bags a week so i hope they are good😂
Sam Svalander
When I read about how much glyphosate is in oats, which is sprayed on merely for uniform drying, I went to 25-pound bags of whole organic oats cooked in my instapot. Looks like wheat berries, tastes deeelish
Thank You for talking so quick and getting to the point. definitely not a boring video. I loved it. You should do Plantenes and okra next
Ahh I knew it would be kael! Blueberries next week? Big up!
You read my mind... or just know the foods I like. ;)
@@Simnettnutrition wild blueberries
@@Simnettnutrition Been on a kick of stuffing baked sweet potatoes with blueberries
Canada has some good blueberries. I bought their export couple times, they're legit! really dark blue... not like the UK big ones where blue is only the skin
@@Simnettnutrition haa yea I know what food you like! I've got a daily blueberry habit. Got some growing at home this year - should be all good. Really like the videos mate! Keep doin what ur doin!
Oh my gosh thanks for making kale more approachable. I can't wait to try out your kale with dressing recipe.
Broccoli, please☺️ next video on nutritional facts
Hi 👋 from Plano, Texas!!! I prepared your kale salad for a family gathering and it was a great success….! I did added some chickpeas, red onion, tomatoes sesame seeds and your tahini dressing…. It was delicious!! Thank you, keep up the good work…..🤲👋👍
First!
Derek - throw a bit of turmeric and black pepper in that dressing for some color (and added benefits). I make a similar dressing with a touch of sriracha as well!
lol. i am digging the food series videos Derek! i actually learned new things about kale. :D also, i think that lacinato is pronounced "lah-sin-ah-toh". www.pronouncekiwi.com/Lacinato%20kale much love. ;)
Hey bro, all the way from the Bahamas 🇧🇸 great recipe , l enjoyed it.
Thank you bro! I’ve always wanted to visit the Bahamas. I’ve been to Barbados, but I would love to see the Bahamas! I bet the fruit there is amazing.
I remember telling someone that kale needs to be massage lmao, she look at me like I was crazy😅
Thanks a lot for this recipe! This is the first year I grew some kaleidoscope perennial Cale from the experimental farm network in my back to eden garden. I’m looking forward to trying out this recipe soon!!
In the Netherlands (and I assume in Afrikaans, too) we still call it "boerenkool", which translates to peasants/farmers cabbage:)
That is so cool!
In Germany we just call it "green cabbage".. That's just how Germans roll I guess:D
Add some avocado & other favorite greens (red leaf lettuce, brocolli, frisee lettiuce, spinach) & veggies (tomatoes, cucumbers, red cabbage),
w/ the final ingredient being warmed up chickpeas, & find that no dressing is required (avocado makes for a perfect creamy dressing).
12:12 - LMAO, Coco is hilarious
Just pet Coco,he's a good 🐱
My favorite is greens and beans, with kale and white beans. Looks and tastes great.
Next to weed, Kale is my favorite Green 😎🙌
;)
Dandelion?
How about we stop trying to make weed appear cool and harmless?
Thank you Derrick! Also what are your thoughts on Spirulina?
Love the history of kale I’ve been incorporating it in my diet, mostly in drinks. Love this recipe!
What can be more sexy then a guy talking about kale while wearing a “for the animals” t-shirt?
