It's an incredible sound! And when Malmsteen used it from the Alchemy record until the mid 00s his tone improved. It has the DOD250 sound but with this aggresive top end that makes it sound open and alive. The MXR is probably an MXR distortion in a different box. Its a very similer circuit. I'll carry on recording with the 308 and if i go on the road or start gigging again I would use the MXR.
First off, great to hear your voice, Steve. :-) I like the race car comparison. You know I do. Well I loved Niki Lauda in his red Ferrari back in the day because he was a real man who survived the eleven mile Nuremberg, driving and racing a gas bomb on wheels. He was a real man, like most racers and those who liked to go fast back then. I was a Team Lotus John Player Special guy with Emerson Fittipaldi and later Andretti, guy first. I even made a JPS Lotus car for the Pinewood Derby. Your old school pedal might seem a little more muddled, but I do prefer it over the slightly cleaner, and brighter, newer red edition. Cheers!
So many amazing racers back then, another breed with the highly likely chance of being killed. I prefer the Lotus pedal too, just. It’s just a bit more exciting. The new one is a little conservative.
Great playing. They sound very similar (just using my phone’s speaker). I liked the original a bit better on the low end and rhythm stuff. And, the red a bit better on the lead stuff you did with the neck pickup.
That’s a very good question, he’s always been at an insane level. I’m going to say his first solo on the Alcatraz album, Island in the Sun. It’s very melodic and a good study in bending, vibrato and intonation. As well as a few economy picking runs 🤘
Sound pretty similar to me, but the original 308 sounds a tiny bit clearer and brighter perhaps? I've already got the 308 so I feel no need to get the mxr... Oh, started to write this before your conclusion at the end, so I guess I was not imagining things... What about the noise level? Is the mxr better in that regard?
I don’t think you need the MXR if you have the DOD. I would give that 10/10 and the MXR 9/10. The DOD is slightly brighter and more exciting. But the MXR is very good, and would recommend if you don’t own this style of pedal already. Not as noisy as the DOD but still a lot of hiss maxed out. Definitely need an noise suppressor!
Great playing Steve 🤘😎🤘!! Listening with good headphones, I can say they sound similar, but not identical. The MXR seems to be a tad noisier and more compressed. Each pedal sounds good in their own right, just depends what flavor you are looking for. I personally like the DOD better. It has a more dynamic sound. Cheers mate!!🍺
They are almost identical, the black one is a bit brighter and the red one is darker and smoother. But it’s subtle. I could only really tell listening to the mix in headphones. It sounds identical on my phone 😆
Funny that The dod gets the yngwie sound even on ur charvel guitar , the mxr sounds good but didn’t sound like yngwie, it was noted when u played now ur ships solo , also it has some fuzz on top , which one is closer to the grey dod in ur opinion ?
The DOD is much more open and musical. The MXR is very compressed. Much like his tone since switching to Seymour Duncan’s. The MXR sounds quite similar to the yellow DOD but I’ve never had the pleasure to try a grey. I have a clone of the grey called a Mosky 250 which is about £25 from China. It sounds great for solos using a humbucker. I used it on most of my Paganini album as I used predominantly my pink DK24.
They feel similar to play, the only difference is the black is more open and the red is compressed. Much like his modern tone. MXR and yellow dod are very similar. The yellow…. Wins just
the 308 sounds better, used to own one. the only issue I had was why they made it so you had to take off 4 screws to replace the 9v battery. I ended up just using 2 screws diagonal and loosen 1 to change it out. 😅
Are your pickups noiseless? What pickups are in that beautiful Charvel? Sounds great! Fantastic playing. I run a cheap Klon clone into a Rat clone into the front of a Marshall and can get THE sound with my Telecaster. Both pedals sound great. I’d go with the one that cleans up best.
Thanks a lot. Yes, the pickups are noiseless. They are Jackson J-200. They are very low output and quite bright. But I love them, they get a bad rap amongst Charvel aficionados for being weak, but you just have to drive them hard. Clones are great, I also have a cheap DOD gray pedal clone that sounds fantastic with humbuckers. Not so much with single coils though!
The YJM308 is the worst overdrive ever made. The MXR on the other is a good overdrive. But nothing beats the old grey DOD 250.If you know how to ser it properly that is.
Both sound great I think. The 308 has a more vintage overdrive sound, while the MXR is more "fat" and sustained. I'd prefer the 308 for classic 80's heavy metal style songs.
They both sound pretty similar to my ears, but I think I'll stick w/the DOD....I have one also & it kinda blew me away 1st time I plugged it in, a lot of power from that thing! Noisy as hell tho, is yours too? I need to use the noise gate, the BOSS one like yours.Anyways, keep up the good work sir!
To my ears DOD is a bit brighter and MXR adds a little bit bass. They both sound wonderful and we can hear the very slight difference between them because you are playing one after the other, but if you play a song with one of them for us to guess it will be extremely difficult to tell which one it is... just very trained ears (like yours)... or by a lucky guess 🙃 DOD of course!, cheers Maestro!. ♫ ♥🎸♪
Thanks dude. Yeah, maybe I’ll do a more in depth analysis now I’ve had the pedal a few weeks. I wanted to show the difference in tone in the way i use an overdrive which is always on and on the same level. I like a good overdrive to add a bit of flavour to an already great amp. I didn’t back it off for the rhythm, it was gain 1 o’clock and level 10 throughout for both pedals 🤘
The YJM308 is the worst overdrive ever made. It's horrible. The MXR on the other hand is a good overdrive.Big step up from both the Fender YJM and the dreadful 308.But nothing beats the old 70's DOD 250.If you know how to set it properly that is.Level 9 a clock drive on 10.
They both sound good. Your playing is fantastic.
Thanks man 🙏🤘
Mate i like this you doing... This is really high class level play 😊
Thanks dude 🤘🍻
Amazing technique 💥
The 308 for solos sounds exactly like YJMs tone 😮 they got that pedal right first time 👍
It's an incredible sound! And when Malmsteen used it from the Alchemy record until the mid 00s his tone improved. It has the DOD250 sound but with this aggresive top end that makes it sound open and alive. The MXR is probably an MXR distortion in a different box. Its a very similer circuit.

How do you set both pedal ?
By the way, Caprice 1 on electric guitar sound awesome !!
Thanks!! Bothe pedals were set level 10 gain 1 o’clock

Also DOD for the win! Cheers 🍻
Savatage and DOD for the win!!🍻🍻
This is the best comparison! but I would choose dod. Dude, you play so cool! Your skill level is incredible
Thanks dude, DOD for me too. But only just!
Great playing. They sound very similar (just using my phone’s speaker). I liked the original a bit better on the low end and rhythm stuff. And, the red a bit better on the lead stuff you did with the neck pickup.
They are very close, but I like both!
Love the Yngwie photo in the bottom right
I’m pretty sure the guitar he has in that picture was the first Malmsteen signature strat he got from fender, it’s dark blue
nice playing dude !
Thanks a lot 🤘
What would you say is the best yngwie solo to start learning his style?
That’s a very good question, he’s always been at an insane level. I’m going to say his first solo on the Alcatraz album, Island in the Sun. It’s very melodic and a good study in bending, vibrato and intonation. As well as a few economy picking runs 🤘
@@MaestroStevieJ86 Alright, thanks for the quick answer!

It is Hall of the Mountain King! 🤘

Thanks bro. Absolutely spot on. The DOD is more open and alive but the MXR definitely has its place in certain situations 🤘
smokin' player, so awesome!
Thanks Tony 🤘
Difficult to ascertain on YT .. remarkably similar.
Perhaps the RED one is a bit 'clearer'?
They are almost identical, the black one is a bit brighter and the red one is darker and smoother. But it’s subtle. I could only really tell listening to the mix in headphones. It sounds identical on my phone 😆
I felt the opposite. The 308 sounded brighter while the mxr had more low mids going on. But sure, they are close...
great test, thank you
Glad you liked it ✌️
Im down for either pedal if it means i can play like yngwie, but sadly that aint gonna happen for me lol.

@@peteyoung7665 you have bad ears, & don't know how to listen for note articulation. You probably play very sloppily.
MXR sounds great for solos but the 308 has that rhythm clarity
Both definitely have there strengths, but I’ve still been using the DOD on the whole.
Amazing
Cheers Mark 🤘
Steve, you're an amazing guitar player. Your sound is amazing. I prefer the DOD.
Thanks Fernando! I prefer the DOD too, but the MXR is very good
MXR is fatter. Do you get DOD sounds for rhythm by dialing back the drive knob ?
Still the same amount of drive, level 10 and gain 1 o’clock
I did not expected to see trained by JP crew neck ! Especially with old logo !!
Ha ha! From a previous life 😆
@@MaestroStevieJ86 haha I can relate ! Also I’m selling my YJM Strat in you’re on the market for one 😝
