That was something that bugged me when people said skin care (beyond washing the face) was "vanity". The skin is the largest organ in the body AND the first line of defense in our immune system. Of course you want to take care of it! All of it.
THANK YOU ! It annoys me so much when people say I am excessive with my skincare or my sunscreen like yes I am doing it partly because I want better looking skin, but also because I am at a higher risk of skin cancer (pale skin, lot of moles, very bad burn a few years ago) and your skin protects your entire body but what is protecting it ? There's only so much your skin can do you might as well take care of it.
Some people are triggered by any reference to vanity. They see an interest in beauty as being entirely self-absorbed. But, how your skin looks is linked to your health in many cases.
Thats like saying that taking care of your teeth is "vanity". Just like skin there is aesthetics component such as not having yellow teeth and bad breath but we of course dont want teeth cavities which can progress and become more dangerous to health. Same thing with skincare, nice skin looks better aesthetically but there is health component too.
beyond basic cleansing, skincare is entirely vanity and not at all helpful for overall skin health in issues like immunity
And also…what’s wrong with vanity?!
I love how you said " when we get wiser" not older🙋
1. Donuts
2. White bread
3. BBQ sauce
4. Cocktails
5. Processed sweets/snacks
6. Sugary soft sodas
7. Hot dogs, pepperoni, bacon
What m i gonna eat now 😭
So basically yummy foods 😭💔
The only thing that makes me really sad is the bacon 🥓.
thank you for this❤️
🙄 me while I eat my sandwich on sourdough bread. 🥺
The skin as an organ is often a reflection of our internal health.
I damaged mine a lot due to auto immune disorder... Now learning a lot from these....
"BARBEQUE SAUCE"... you might need to turn in your Texas card for that 😂😂
I really love lifestyle advice for healthy skin. Nothing to do with collagen, but back in the day, I went to a doctor in Russia for help with acne, they gave me a what-to-do-about-acne leaflet, which was full of diet, exercise, gut health, and stress management advice. And only towards the bottom did it say, “if you really want to, you can try a topical treatment such as Skinoren (azelaic acid product sold over the counter in Russia at 15% and 20%).” I appreciate a well-rounded approach like that.
Wow, what a holistic approach! Looking back on the years i struggled with acne, it was always the ones where I was stressed, eating badly, and not exercising that it was the worst. I wish I had gotten that leaflet!
Amazing doctor
Wow! What a good doctor. I hope to find one who has a holistic approach like this.
Basically, sugar and highly processed foods.

What if it's a fragrance-free donut?
Licked by Arianna Grande? Oh wait; that'd make it stink. Never mind. 😃
@@rubynibs old joke
😀😀 if it's sugar free donut, it's OK
😂😂😂
Donuts are frying
donuts was mentioned so many times in this video. i probably haven't had or craved donuts this year but ooh boy ironically, this video makes me want to order one. 🤣🤣🤣
I felt the same way after watching supersize me😂
😂
Who can have just one??? Don't get me started...
As a Registered Dietitian, I LOVE this video!!! Very accurate, very informative, very anti-diet and loved your emphasis of not having to eliminate all these foods. LOVE LOVE LOVE 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
It’s funny but my overall health has improved significantly since I started watching your videos, and all I wanted was good skin! I went to a dermatologist for the first time the other day and he told me “your skin is the best skin I’m going to see today” and it was the compliment of the year. Thank you Dr. Dray!
I thought ppl go to derm when they hv a skin concern
@@ixa.m9915 I go every six months for an overall skin check because I’m covered in freckles.
"#1 - DOUGHNUTS."
*Me gets a heartache*
Haha when she said alcohol....I'm like "but it heals the soul" 🤣 some things are worth it!
I know; I almost lost it!
Living longer just isn't worth it. Doughnuts are better
🥴
Nooooo
I appreciate that you mentioned the word "size" of the food items.
Americans have this obsession over big sized food items unlike any other culture. I remember seeing a video where people compared all the food items in McDonald's in Japan and the US. Interestingly, the burgers and fries are mostly the same size with very similar calorie counts, but what's drastically different is the size of the soda. In Japan the soda size is tiny compared to the US.
I've also seen mini sized canned sodas and mini donuts in France as well.
Both Japan and France have amazing food and sweets. The key is, no secret, moderation. It's something that we all know but tend to forget. We don't have to live by the books. Don't feel guilty for eating unhealthy food, instead, congratulate yourself if you're able to reduce your consumption even if it's just by a bit, treat yourself occasionally, and slowly you'll get to a healthier place.
It’s amazing what a clean wholesome diet and SPF can do for your skin. Looking back at my photos from 2005, I look better now than back then, when I lived off junk
Plus your long term health....those foods cause chronic diseases. Cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure...
I am a type 1 diabetic and already knew where you were going with this video;- sugar is a destroyer of skin and other tissues in the body. In large amounts it can be as damaging as acid would be and people don't realize that fact. Again, thank you for educating us on the wellness of our outsides as well as our insides!
Also damaging to other organs like heart.
@@Scarlet-qg1xi Yes indeed! Literally most organs can be damaged due to high levels of sugars in the body. Sugar also feeds cancers and a diet high in sugar can trigger it to evolve in the body.
Do you use alternative sweeteners?
@@JaiProdz Yes, but I try to use all natural types such as stevia and a bit of honey. Splenda kills the gut biomes and can cause cravings, Nutra Sweet is damaging to the brain and central nervous system, and Sweet 'N'Low has a multitude of side effects too. I do consume items with Splenda in them but try to limit them.
@@deannaisom342 oh thank you for responding! I have been trying stevia and it's been working fine!
None of these foods "1-7", are part of my (Australian) diet, apart from the odd glass of wine with a meal or at a party/event. However, the Australian sun exposure is an ongoing challenge in dealing with sun damage avoidance. I have a pescatarian, lacto-ovo diet, wear sunscreen, and cover up in the sun. I'm 58 and have Anglo-Saxon freckly skin, which living in Australian has been a challenge, yet my efforts and your advice Dr Dray, are paying off, as I get comments that I look younger than I actually am.
‘When we get wiser’…. I like that ☺️
Sat down with a pizza to watch this.. hope it’s not bought up
🤣🤣🤣
🤣
was it a pepperoni pizza 😩
I have been incorporating more vegetables into my diet, especially cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, and cabbage. I also started taking a vegan omega-3 supplement. I made these changes for overall health but I have noticed a brighter and smoother complexion since improving my diet.
I've been trying to cut out sugar lately.. coming from a history of eating awfully my entire life. And noticing the effects sugar had on my skin causing acne etc. It was hard at first, but now sugar tastes so strong and I can feel it on my teeth. It's just not appealing anymore. One step at a time.
Same for me, if I need it I replace it adding bananes to the recipes when it is possible
Stivia is doing the job for me 😉
It gets easier as time goes on. You get to recognise all the bad effects from sugar. It turned out that so many of my issues were down to over eating carbohydrates and I had no idea! Low carb has helped me tons.
Yep. Been using stevia. It can be strong or aftertasted but it works well in teas and banana bread. I'm trying monk fruit today!
Monk fruit has no after taste.
For sure, other youtubers will copy or rewording Dr Dray's topic today. What I don't like is that they sometimes add informations that are wrong or inaccurate. Dr Dray is really trying to educate us while others just need viewers to gain lot of viewers=💰
I can't remember the last time I had a doughnut and now it's the only thing in the world that I want.
😂😂😂
I don't even like doughnuts, but when she mentioned a triple sized doughnut as big as her head, it sounded rather tempting. Good thing I don't need to go grocery shopping anytime soon.
Good morning to my favorite doctor!
Finally someone talking about glycation! Although it is hard to avoid it completely, we can diminish it :) and take antioxidants.
Thanks for watching
Love the piece about “preserving function”
Lots of people love justifying bad habits and use it to romanticize “eating what you want” “aging naturally under the sun.” Good luck with the skin cancer
'Portion Distortion' that would be a great band name. 'Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the stage, Portion Distortion!' 🎸🎶
Great video.
I can't help but then envision a bunch of fat guys playing accordions walking out. (Didn't John Candy star in a movie like this?) 😆🤣😅
Ya, "all things in moderation". That's a tough one to figure out. For one person, that means 2-3 per year, and cakes and cookies are included in that count. For the next person, it means 1 per week PLUS they are considering the cookies and cakes as each being in seperate categories from the donuts and each other. I'm being serious with this comment. It's confusing out there!
I agree with you so much!
My partner is one of these 'moderation' guys but eats junk every day. He thinks it's a healthy amount, I disagree. It would be so much easier if there was an average or a guideline of a ballpark figure for this.
Beauty, looks, attractiveness, etc matter to society. It’s a fact! I will never understand why people want to argue and deny it.
I use sparkling water, strawberries and tart cherry concentrate for my mixed drink, and it is delicious!
I use fresh lime, sparkling water, stevia and frozen strawberries... with my vodka :)
Portion sizes in US are enormous… I couldn’t believe when I ordered a meal and drink in the restaurant…
This is the best video related to skin health i have come across in a while, thank you!
This doesn’t mean you can never have the foods you enjoy, just everything in moderation :)
The problem with moderation is that it has no definition. It means whatever you want.
My Chinese doctor said "better a hotdog with love than brown rice with aggravation".
I love this, especially that you mention portion control.
Great topic, especially since I'm "wiser". Thanks!
It’s been a year and a half since I went completely plant base and my skin is glowing
I started brushing my hair for 2 hours each night. It’s silky. Must be stimulating oil glands
I love how Dr.Dray puts all these references. A true researcher and informer.
I love potato chips (which some interestingly have some good fats even though they're not good) and I found that for me the best way to "portion control" is to either buy the small bags or to pour some chips into a small bowl and eat them in another room. I'll be less likely to overeat them than when I was just eating them straight out of the bag and could finish the whole bag in one sitting
I learned all this from doing some research, so I’m glad to hear you validate my “hypochondria” according to some
My skin challenges have been systemic and lifelong....and as I have aged, the challenges have changed in that direction, as well. It is a true blessing to have found such a unique perspection, expressed in a true authentic visual and voice that is uniquely positive in the delivery of the earned and learned wisdom of the ages, per say...lol...thanks Doc! 🙂 💪✌
Really love your content Dr. Dray. Love the way you say-as we get wiser☺️
All your videos are just so refreshing.
Yes to everything in moderation!
Thank you for sharing.
It is so great that you share all this valuable, researched information with us. Thank you!
Thank for sharing this information in such a clear and positive way. Good choices can really improve our quality of life.
Dr. Dray, have you ever done a video on all the buzz around fasting and autophagy and the belief that it improves skin and skin aging? I would really love it if you would.
Yes! I would love that too.
I think as close as she's gotten to that is her keto video.
Yes. Great idea. The whole shebang fasting/autophagy/anti-aging.
I really don't understand how not having any nutrients would be good for your body or skin? Doesn't it lead to cell death? And therefore, bad for you.
Depends. There are people who swear by it and others who say it can be damaging. If you do a search on here you'll find multiple doctors with their takes on it. Mind you, some of the doctors might be questionable (chiropractors) but there are plenty of videos about it.
Thanks so much for this. I was very curious about AGEs.
Happy Wednesday to you, your mom and Tybee boy! Thanks for the content.
Happy Wednesday
Dr. Dray looks so good as always. Really walking the talk
Thank you SO much for the practical, real world advice!
I love these videos. Thank you for informing us on these things because I do tend to love some of the foods and drink you mentioned and I never knew this about some of them you mentioned.
Dr Dray thanks for the video! Great info! Could you please do a video on menopause and skin care? Thank you.
thank you dr and happy Wednesday everyone
This video got me through half my intense mountain climbing elliptical workout and was kept me engaged! Thanks for all the effort you put in and information you provide us Dr Dray! Love you ❤️
This is so true . I'm diabetic type 1 and you are very right on those foods . My dietician tells me the same
Have you already done a video about the best foods for preserving collagen? I’d love to see that.
Thank you for always being transparent! As a scientist, I appreciate when you mentioned that studies are not conclusive. There are many famous dietitians, and even some doctors on youtube who say "do that" or "don't do that" based on ONE study. It really gets me that they say these opinions as general truths, and then ordinary people form opinions based on that, and/or adjust their lives. Sometimes even if several studies confirm something, it still doesn't need to apply to every person (depending on the topic of course), and then come to the study which says it is not like that. People are complex beings, and the results can depend on the test group and their life habits, genetics, diet, health state...although there are things that are known (!) I think the best is to try it out and listen to your body and make it balanced and not extreme (unless you health requires it).
I truly appreciate your outlook, Dr. Dray! You strike a good balance between being as healthy as possible but yet also still enjoying life. It’s refreshing! 💛🙏🏻😘👩🏻⚕️
I love that you said as we get wiser. ❤
We definitely need more videos like this 👍
thanks for the timestamps!
Very valuable information and explanation - thank you again!!!
God, I love this woman! Dr. Dray validates every eating decision that I make.
Thank You for your videos. I'm watching from Argentina! Just found your channel a couple of days ago, i want to learn new things
Muchas gracias Doctora Dray ❤️
Love your vids. You have changed my life.
I love how she said "wiser" instead of "older." Love these videos and her personality.
Thanks. This video is just what I needed!
Great info -- thank you so much!
Have a beautiful day Dr Dray and peeps ❤️ ❤️ 😎☕🥳
Good morning Dr Dray, Happy Wednesday!
Happy Wednesday
Hey Dr. Dray! I love your educational videos they make my day. I was wondering if you could possibly do a video on vitiligo? It’s something that I think is interesting and pretty cool especially since it’s being more normalized now that models with vitiligo are being casted for huge campaigns and covers.
People do ask about from time to time. One derm who does have one is Dr Davin Lim.
So true on portions, I had 2 meals from left overs from some restaurants.
I guess I never realized that diet could affect collagen. Thanks for making this “wiser” lady even wiser! Happy Wednesday, Dr Dray!! Hope you have a relaxing evening. 💜
Great information Doc. I try and eat a lower sugar diet. I am guilty of doing a “home pour” when I have a glass of wine 🍷 while at home. I will keep what you said in mind. 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge 🙏
Thank you so much I’ve really needed this💕
At this point I am just addicted to your videos. All the best from Poland! :)
Great video, so informative. Thank you
All I did was switch white bread to a 16 grain whole grain bread. I had a problem with both digestion and blood sugars. Both of these dramatically improved by switching this bread when I had eggs daily. The drop in my A1C was dramatic. I’m on insulin for type 2 diabetes. I only drink unsweetened diet soda occasionally. The only time I drink sweetened beverages is if I have a low blood sugar reaction. Try switching one or two items.
Another wonderful video! Thank you so much! ❤️
I love how you read my mind :D
Happy Wednesday!
Happy Wednesday
Loved this information
Thank you for another informative video!
I've been on keto for several years and I'm totally enjoying life!
Great video, but when she mentioned avocado on your hot-dog? Absolutely delicious! I like eating them with tomato and onions, as well. If you haven't, you should try it!
thank you doctor, can plan my meals rightly now
Excellent, Dr. Dray, thank you.
So grateful for all the work you do to give your audience useful information. Thank you, Dr.Dray.
Thank you so much! This is very helpful for me. My daughter has Williams Syndrome and they are missing the elastin protein in the skin and because they have other health problems.
I had corona and my entire bodies skin is different. It’s hard to explain. But it feels like it’s detached from me in a way.
I would love to see more videos on food-skin.
Does it feel like a bat?
I really love this video . Thank you 👏
In America, we have "portion distortion"... Great term! And so true! A "medium" drink here is a Large most other places. It's crazy!
Totally Enjoyed!!👌Thank YOU🌞
Your apartment and lifestyle are so inspiring to me! It feels so sophisticated and peaceful.
Happy Wednesday Dr Dray... see you tomorrow x💙🤩
I feel attacked. She just came for my whole diet🤣🤣
Thank you so much for the information 💕
These are the sorts of videos that I've come to know and love from Dr Dray. Don't underestimate the importance of what NOT to do. ;)
Great video happy Wednesday to you and your family 👪
Very informative!
Needed this! Thanks !
