As great a singer as Phil was and became, he will always be a drummer first to me. People don't realize what an innovator he is. When 'prog rock' was in it's infancy in the early '70's, Phil was there with Genesis and later Brand 'X' (a part-time fusion band) in the late '70's. The drum sound he (& Producer Hugh Padgham produced) laid the groundwork for a new standard of recorded drum which was everywhere in the '80's. He is only one of three artists to sell 100 million records with a band and another 100 million as a solo act (Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson the other two). He has either played or produced nearly anyone who was anyone and has left a legacy, work ethic and resume that NO ONE of future generations will be able to match. His talent behind the kit is undeniable and this isn't even him at his best.
Chester Thompson was a seasoned session player before he even hooked up with Genesis in 1977. He had stints with Weather Report and Frank Zappa and later even the Bee Gees (1989)before beginning his role as the main 'live' drummer from 1977-2007. He & Phil had a falling out around 2010 and haven't spoken since which is a drag. Chester taught me all about 'groove' and has made me a much more soulful player than I ever would have been had I not come across his playing, style and musical mannerisms. Early Genesis could be described as kind of 'stiff'. If you listen to live records like 'Second's Out' or 'Three Sides Live', Chester allowed the songs to breathe more. He loosened them up and when Phil wasn't playing, he had the ability to turn a driving band into a locomotive.

OH, they rehearse.....and can do it the same time, every time. Listen to their unison parts. Yeah, they are that good! Phil Collins wanted each concert to be GREAT. Chester played with the best before joining Genesis. He played with Frank Zappa (think 'Inca Roads') and the great jazz/fusion group Weather Report (think 'Birdland' and 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy')

The other drummer is Chester Thompson who has been with Phil Collins and Genesis since 1977. The one on percussion is the great Louis Conte.
This is from Phil's 2004 First Farewell Tour in Paris.
Phil and Chester has developed this drum-routine since - 77 and has always been a live favourite.
There are, IMO, better duels in Genesis concerts. 🔥🔥

“In the air tonight”, live from same concert in Paris must be one of the best live performances.

If you want to hear some insane drums and percussion, check out Santana-Soul Sacrifice!
This was at Woodstock and that drummer was 17 years old.

When having multiple drummers the timing has to be nothing less than 100% perfect or it can sound like a total mess. These guys are 100% perfect.

Yeah baby, masters at work. Maybe I'm wrong but Phil seems to be getting a tad bit tired at one point. But pure fire. It's amazing to me they don't get tired. Pros. I'm a drummer and just bang on what I have to practice. Resonate table tops would be preferred. Though I don't compare to these guys or Neil Peart, Bonham, etc.
