Phil was one of the first drummers who inspired me to play. He's really a master at his craft.

Phil's career will never be duplicated. Part of it is the era he came up in. Part of it is sheer work ethic and the other part of it is his ability to play for the genre. His drumming and his influence on my is undeniable and sometimes even indescribable. His body of work speaks for itself and even those who don't like him or his voice or his style (of which there were many), can not deny the everlasting impact he has had on his instrument and rock/pop/fusion as a whole.

Great choice. Fantastic drummer. (all three are) AND then the dude does a 2 hr. concert at the age of 53 yrs young. Unbelievable. Do check out his Brand X work (jazz/fusion).

His big band is also incredible. They do a jazz version of Sussudio that I just never get tired of.

What I love about this - apart from the obvious talent and sound - is how they play together and not competitive each other, like many drummer do on stage, when not alone.

Phil was at his drumming peak in the late seventies. The live Genesis stuff especially around 1976/77 and his Brand X albums were him at his groove/power/technique best, so much energy back then too, and he is cited by Stuart Copeland and Neil Peart as a big influence from that period. I think he would have become even better technically had his solo career not taken off the way that it did. He was never a Steve Gadd /Dave Weckyl type player but what he didn’t have in chops he made up for in personality and powerful drive. Those Collins/Chester solo’s were written with the crowd in mind as something fun to watch and get behind musically…they could easily be sneered at by today’s UA-cam drummer generation for not being ‘clever’ enough but it has to be taken in context. I feel so sad the way his physical health took such a dive, I always imagined he would have gone more into jazz playing, maybe his own quartet rather than the big band stuff he dabbled with, which was also great fun…

Phil was only 53 there. He’s 70 now and in horrible shape, no longer holding up well, unfortunately. He’s had several devastating surgeries, can no longer drum and ended up with a drop foot.

Please oh please do a reaction video to this one..... ua-cam.com/video/b4n6CZYoDS0/v-deo.html His name is Dylan Elise. He's had videos on UA-cam for over 10 years, and you may have already seen some of them. At the time of the video, he performed exclusively as a street performer. I believe he plays larger venues now with some band. The video quality isn't top notch, but I promise you if you haven't seen him play, you will be impressed by the end of the video.

I got the DVD of this concert soon after it came out. What I always really appreciated is that you can tell it’s a drummer’s audience - despite the European habit of getting rhythms wrong (see Harry Connick Jr’s epic trick when the audience on French TV clapped on the 1 and 3), the audience here instantly hit the groove and get their backbeats right.
