Phil and Chester are one of the best drum duos ever. They worked so well off of each other, but unfortunately they are also criminally underrated and never truly get the recognition they deserve. I have many Phil/Genesis songs to recommend with great drumming!
Hey Jamal, Thanks for filling the request! I will keep it short... Chester Thompson joined Genesis after the exit of Peter Gabriel and just after Phil Collins started fronting the band with his vocals. Around late 1970, early 1980, Genesis needed an incredible second drummer to add to the complexity of the band and the live performances. The rest is history. Seen many amazing Genesis concerts since 1980. Keep spinning those tunes m-Man! B)
Yeah Chester was the live drummer for Genesis since '77 and he also played with Phil when he was doing his solo tours. Both these dudes got GROOVE! Way more than most. Great drummers, two of the best.
When Peter Gabriel left Genesis and Phil became the the singer they needed someone to drum while Phil was singing. Chester joined them on tours in 75. They have been doing drum duets ever since and are always one of the highlights of their concerts.
This drumming is SO musical. Such unison and intricate passages with dynamics all over the place. These guys truly know what they are doing. If you go back and watch 'Drums, Drums and more Drums' from his Paris 2004 concert opener, you will not regret it....oh, and let it run into the opening tune 'On the Way To Heaven'. Crazy Good.

They were at their prime and had refined their drum duet and it stands on its own instead of segueing into another song. Thank you for posting this video to help spread the greatness and genius of Phil Collins and Chester Thompson 🥁🤘🏻🙏🏻
Phil Collins also played a lot with Jazz Rock fusion band "Brand X" in the 70's,. There you'll find Phil playing the way he couldn't for Genesis, A labour of love for him, but he knew where the money was. A favourite Brand X tune would be "Nuclear Burn".
I remember when I first got it I thought I was playing it at the wrong speed - the base & drums were playing such a high rolling speed, then the guitar cuts in just as fast. Epic track.
Staying safe my brother. Love hanging out with you. I am 77yr old Vet and I grew up with this music! And yes, I still get goosebumps when I hear it. And now we have Disturbed and "Sound of Silence." I can't stop watching it. A lot of this music we heard in Nam. Crazy huh.
Great to see....in person. Fortunately I’m old enough that I saw Genesis and Phil Collins live twice each. Goosebumps...🎶🎶🎶🎶🤘😎 Chester Thompson was the touring drummer for Genesis and Phil’s solo tours. Where Phil went, Chester went...for sure.
there were so many great duets with Phil and Chester throughout the years. While I don't think this is the best one they've done, it does highlight just how in sync and in-tune these two were. Phil remains as painfully underrated a drummer as any in history. Phil's development of sound on the drum as a recorded medium cannot be understated. And his playing in the early days of 'progressive rock' make him an innovator and in his prime, nearly untouchable.
Absolutely. Not only did he inspired drummers throughout the 70s, but after "In The Air Tonight" came out, that's what drums sounded like on records for the next 10 to 15 years.

Look up Chester Thompson and Phil Collins Two Stools drum solo! It will blow you away! Chester has toured with Genesis for many years to free up Phil while he sings! You should also check out Phil's Tambourine dance with Genesis!
The story on how Chester Thompson joined Genesis begins in 1976 after Genesis wrapped up their "A trick of the tail" tour where they had the mighty Bill Bruford (King Crimson, Yes) on drums and although the band and Bruford got along really well and he fit right in, the fact that he was to play Collins' drum parts and JUST Collins' drum parts and not put his own spin on them was weighing heavy on Bruford, so after the final show, he was out. So the band reconvened on what to do at which it was brought up that they should have an studio guy, a session player whom you could tell "Here are the tracks, learn them." And Collins remembered seeing the Fusion band Weather Report and Chester was their drummer at the time and he went "I think I know who we can ask." So Chester was brought in, the band started rehearsing for their "Wind and Wuthering" tour and Chester was going "Man you guys are BAD!" which of course meant that he enjoyed playing with them very much but the band, being English didn't understand his use of slang, so they were Worried that Thompson didn't like the music since it was "Bad." Chester later said that Phil taught him how to play the "Ringo Shuffle" and in turn he taught Phil how to play the "Philly Swing."
@@michielvdvlies3315 Yes. Phil says that he was listening to the Frank Zappa live album “Live at the Roxy” and he heard Chester playing with another drummer doing double drums and he said that he wanted to see if Chester could do the Genesis gig. On the other hand Chester says that he was playing with Weather Report and Phil was there or something and saw Chester and hired him to play with Genesis. Who knows, lol.
Chester Thompson played with the group Weather Report and had done studio work with Frank Zappa before becoming a permanent member of Genesis' touring band in 1977. He played on all their tours for 20+ years and I feel one of the best stick men around.
Phil Collins is such a great talent. There are so many great duets and Ensemble performances on UA-cam nowadays. Maybe do some of those one day. Thank you Jamel for all the positivity.
Chester Thompson has had quite an eclectic career. His first big break was playing drums for Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention in the mid 70s performing on his most iconic albums Apostrophe, One Size Fits All, and Roxy & Elsewhere. Then he was a member of jazz fusion legends Weather Report. After that stint he joined Genesis and Phil Collins’ solo band as their touring drummer for nearly 30 years.
I like this background as well I can see you better anyways good looks like Phil Collins was just sleeping enjoying what he was doing in his dreams that were coming through for us holy smokes What a Beautiful video this is awesome deep this around please God bless peace be with you much love and respect
This duet was part of the London Earls Court Genesis concert in 1991. Chester was, for many years, Genesis' tour drummer, standing in for Phil when he was out front singing. There was also a fabulous guitarist called Darryl Steurmer who supplemented the band on tour to cover for Mike Rutherford, who couldn't play guitar AND bass on tour as he did on the recordings
Chester has been with Phil since I don’t know how long! Don’t forget Phil’s son is Touring with his dad - his son is also a drummer. Don’t forget Genesis (Phil’s earlier band) will be touring this fall (September). Dates already published in many countries, including USA.
Good Lord hot!! yeah i was cutting my grass here in central florida..110 heat index! had to come in finish another day.being a drummer for nearly 30yrs I agree ,great fun rhythmic solo..Chester soo underrated!
I always loved Chester's huge kits, but Phil's Gretsch concert tom kits are iconic and instantly recognizable. Back in the 80s, when he played on a track, you knew immediately who it was.
Jamel, awesome video here, You Cannot go wrong with these 2 Great Drummers, The is nothing like when musicians get togeather and play to each other, not who is the best, but lets play, Rock on Brother, Peace Man, Cousin Figel
Chester played with Genesis live for decades, he was considered as part of the band in Genesis live and the fans certainly regard him as an important member, though he never appeared on the albums. The same goes for Daryl Sturmar ( I'm sure I spelled that wrong) the guitarist in their live shows. They both played with Phil Collins in his solo career too.
Jonny Lang: "Lie To Me", " Breakin Me", "Walkin Away". Started playing guitar at 12 yrs. old and made his first album at 14 and started touring. Awesome talent!
If you like that, you can find another half-dozen similar drum duet/triplet videos from these guys. Chester Thompson is a fantastic drummer that goes back to the 60's. He was one of Frank Zappa's drummers and a core member of the Mother's of Inventions (The Mother's). Phil was so intrigued with Chester back then, eventually, he invited Chester to be his tour drummer since Phil spent a lot of time fronting the band as the singer. I highly recommend the Phil Collins/Chester Thompson Drum Duet -> Los Endos Live from 1987. Amazing drum work that's different to this one, and it flows perfectly into one of my personal favorite instrumental pieces of all time.
Chester Thompson is an incredible drummer, as is Phil! They've known each other for a long time. Chester has been Genesis's 2nd drummer when they're out on tour forever!
Chester became a touring member when Phil took over the lead singing roll. He has been a session drummer for many top recording artists, and performed with many others live. Chester belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
They played together for over thirty years. Chester was Genesis and Phils' touring drummer allowing Phil to sing the lead vocals. Chester previously played with W Frank Zappa and Weather Report along with many other artists. He is a monster drummer and Phil is amazing too.
Can't even describe how much I love Phil's drumming he is one of the greatest EVER. and Chester is VERY VERY CLOSE to Phil's awesomeness. Seen them live with Genesis and Phil still tours at least 5 times.i can tell their drumming apart even through these solos. I know each ones distinct sound. Cool fact Phil is left handed and Chester is right handed. Chester was their touring drummer and honorary band member since the mid 70's.
Chester tours with Genesis and with Phil on solo as Phil is primarily a singer in live settings. After seeing/hearing this I have to re think my top ten list of greatest drummers.
Jamel, I said it before but I’m gonna request it again since this is a drum track, and I know how much you LOVE drums and percussion. Please listen to Paul Simon The Obvious Child (official video). Sorry for repeating request, but I just want to keep it on your radar. It’s fun, the drums are infectious as hell. 🙏🙏🙏🧡
To those of you who “liked” my comment, thank you, my friends!! 🙏🙏🙏 I really can’t wait for Jamel to hear this, but I know he gets hundreds of requests every time he posts, so I’m not holding my breath that he will actually be able to get to this request. But the more likes he sees, hopefully will put it on the list! 😃
OMG I love this! Never seen this before. I love drums as well...guess that goes back to the drum cadences that we played in marching band, lol. Awesome!!
Chester, a Baltimore brother. Great guy. Great drummer. Many Collins songs he recorded and toured. Chester's health hasn't been good lately. I need to check on him again.
Every time I see you wearing one of those "Just Be...Tees , I think you should do a reaction to Elvis Costello's song "(What's So Funny About ) Peace, Love And Understanding."
You need to check out Phil's 18 year old son who plays drum's almost as well as he does. They were touring together until this virus took over. You rock , keep it up!
Chester Thompson was the touring drummer for Genesis, it's now Phil's son Nicolaus for Genesis, and Phil Collins (solo) and Daryl Stuermer is the touring guitarist for Genesis/Phil Collins (solo). The main band consists of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks.
I know you probably already know this, but Phil and Chester have played together for decades. They’re both amazing and they’re timing is perfect. Phil can’t play anymore, but his son Nick plays now for him while he sings. Phil is one of the top 5 singer drummers in the world. Don Henley, Leon Helms, Karen Carpenter, Roger Taylor
Kara Turner .. And absolutely underrated. I don’t think they ever got the credit they deserve, it would be great if Jamall did a reaction to that show but I bet he gets flooded with requests
rmhanseniii, I totally agree! I’m surprised they don’t get the recognition they deserve. Omg, the talent!! When they would just go OFF for 15 minute jams...✌️✌️✌️
Chester joined Genesis as their touring drummer in 1977, shortly after Phil took over lead vocals from Peter Gabriel. Phil still played drums on stage but Chester backed him up when he had to focus on singing. Chester went on to tour with Genesis and Phil Collins for like 30 years. Before Genesis he played for Frank Zappa and jazz fusion band Weather Report. Check out "Dance on a Volcano/Drum Duet/Los Endos" from 1977's live Genesis album "Seconds Out."
I posted the following yesterday without seeing your comment: 'Should react to the Wembley Stadium July 1987 Drum Duet into Los Endos. It's remarkable. Or, 'Dreaming While You Sleep' from this same tour.'
Before playing with Collins and Genesis, Thompson was in Frank Zappa's band, which is good to have on your resume. After Peter Gabriel left Genesis, and Phil Collins became the singer, he needed someone else to fill in on drums, and also in his solo concerts where he sang and played piano most of the time. One of my current favorites is Marco Minnemann, who plays with the Aristocrats : ua-cam.com/video/rgPcmNVfKeQ/v-deo.html
@@DS-uh6ss There is this great Y.Tube documentary called The Drummers of Frank Zappa, which has many of them, including Ruth Underwood, reminiscing about being in the band.

Now that's Drummer clout. For you own personal enjoyment, sometime watch a Drummer / Percussion Discussion on UA-cam with Teri Bozio, Chester and all the other percussionist that played with Zappa, I't a discussion that's amazing!
Welcome to the GENESIS world, Jamel. Hope to see more reactions to the Genesis in the near future.
What a combo on drums!
OMG I love this! Never seen this before. I love drums as well...guess that goes back to the drum cadences that we played in marching band, lol. Awesome!!
🙌🏻 Never thought I’d see anyone react to one of Phil and Chester’s drum duets ☺️
Chester, a Baltimore brother. Great guy. Great drummer. Many Collins songs he recorded and toured. Chester's health hasn't been good lately. I need to check on him again.
Please do Genesis's "Cinema Show" the Seconds Out live version next. Amazing synth solo and double drumming from Phil Collins and Bill Bruford.
I have seen these two on stage together over 10 times.
It's Saturday. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY MR. & MRS. JAMEL 💖💖👰🕺
I am so glad you did this. I was about to request it and give a little background on it after watching Godsmack.
Great video as always!! Love your shirt!!! It's what everyone needs to learn!
Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann from the Grateful Dead would blow these guys out of the water
rmhanseniii, Radio City Music Hall 10/31/80! 🔥🔥🔥
Kara Turner ..excellent example 🥁
rmhanseniii, ooooooh...the way they would just jam!!?? 😍😍😍 Never the same. Absolutely beautiful.
You & Chester would be fast friends ... you both love the drums AND the Lakers!
YAAAASSSSS. If only you had done the 1987 version that segues into "Los Endos."
@Norberto G. Rasch yeeeeeeessssssss
Agreed
Oh my God that was awesome. Only heard it once and could not get that cut released in the US.
I posted the following yesterday without seeing your comment:
'Should react to the Wembley Stadium July 1987 Drum Duet into Los Endos. It's remarkable. Or, 'Dreaming While You Sleep' from this same tour.'
also "Dance on a volcano" (the song right before that drum duet)
Such a good point about Hawaiian dancers vibe. Also that’s so true about Chester looking like Ice T.
This was amazing. Professor Neil is from my home town and these two are def professors!
Their Dance on a Volcano drum duet from Seconds Out Live is killer. Chester was Genesis's live drummer.
Jamel, I really like your shirt! I wish everyone wore it! Respectfully, your brother warrior Steve
Speaking of Zappa drummers, it's time for some Terry Bozzio!
@@DS-uh6ss There is this great Y.Tube documentary called The Drummers of Frank Zappa, which has many of them, including Ruth Underwood, reminiscing about being in the band.
Marco Minnemann is amazing! First caught his playing in Dewa Budjana's latest album.
@@-R.Gray- well, now I know what I'm doing today! Thanks for the rec!
@Owl29 Frank used to routinely (and famously) compose songs that were intentionally (and deviously) complicated, forever challenging his players. If they didn't keep up, he brought someone new in! So, I hear your mad props!!
All instruments deserve respect, but seems to me the drums are the mother of all instruments. Folks living in caves were tapping bones and sticks on rocks making the first music.
🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Even before the human voice?
Glenn Roy **”Thus Spoke Zarathustra” intensifies**
THOUGH FANTASTIC, THEIR BEST DRUM DUET WAS THE VERSION THAT WAS PERFORMED DURING THE INVISIBLE TOUCH CONCERT. THAT ONE IS TOTALLY OFF THE CHARTS, AND THE GREATEST DRUM DUET I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE!
Hey Jamel, I'm a 67 year old "Rocker" musician, and have been following Chester all the way back to his, semi-early days, when he joined Frank Zappa's band, AND trust me... You don't get asked to be in Zappa's band unless you're the Best of the Best.
Phil didn't even ask Chester to audition for playing for Genesis or the Phil Collins tours, Just can you join with us!
Now that's Drummer clout.
For you own personal enjoyment, sometime watch a Drummer / Percussion Discussion on UA-cam with Teri Bozio, Chester and all the other percussionist that played with Zappa, I't a discussion that's amazing!
All the best to you Brother, David/Nicky, Far Past Dark (My band on UA-cam)
Glad to be back with your shiplap! Hope your week is well!
Wow! Just plain Wow! 👌
I would suggest The Brazilian by Genesis (live version)
This was really good...i love the drums...
