Nic Collins Hears "Whiplash" For The First Time

- When Nic Collins came out to the Drumeo studio, we asked him to describe his stylistic comfort zone. As you can imagine, rock, prog-rock, and funk were all in his wheelhouse.
We then asked him what styles he's least comfortable with, and he mentioned metal and jazz, the latter of which "is a nightmare for me".
We asked him to listen to a drumless version of "Whiplash", a jazzy 1973 Don Ellis tune that enjoyed a resurgence in the 2010s thanks to the drumming-themed movie of the same name.
Without drums in the track to guide him, Nic had to rely on his intuition to come up with a part on the fly that he thought would fit. In the end, we let him hear what the drums are actually supposed to sound like. How do you think he did?

He may have heard it before at some point, but clearly doesn't know how to play it. Therefore what he plays is improvised.

@@stefanbauer423 he sure is. If you haven't watched any other videos of this series, I highly recommend it. It's really interesting how different drummers approach this challange. Chad Smith improvising on a 30 Seconds to Mars song is a highlight.

In his breakdown of the original drums, Nic touched upon something that I think is at the heart of the style difference between rock & jazz. His instinct as a rock drummer was to add his weight to the big moments, amplifying with hits what the horns were doing, whereas the jazz approach was alternating between light and dark (playing or silence) and using the drums to colour that light. Ironically, despite saying he's not Larnell Lewis, by bringing that rock approach to jazz, he made it fusion.

After watching half a dozen of these videos for metal songs, I've got to admit, jazz is an entirely different beast for this game! 🤣 I have SO MUCH respect for Nic after this!! ❤
Sometimes we forget the weight of the name he carries too easily. He is humble, well-trained, young and down to earth, he has a great career ahead of him, he did very well on the tour with his father, playing with authentic sacred monsters and in front of very demanding audiences, and in this video he has put himself on the line in the best way possible by tackling a genre that is not in his league with intelligence and musical taste. I can only wish him the best, and if he then succeeds in reviving the glories of progressive rock of yesteryear I would be even happier.

I've seen other great drummers be given easy songs and you give the kid an extremely difficult song and he comes out alive. Mad respect for Nic. Deffinately has his dad's DNA.

He doesn't have the experience of some older drummers but he has a great attitude and by the 3rd take he's properly getting the idea of it all. He still has that rock drummer power when he could lay back massively, or know when not to play, sometimes but that main groove when he gets on the bell of cymbal sounds amazing. After analysis, too, he gets it.

I like Nic's touch and tone on the drums. I mean, as he says, he's not into jazz, but I still thought he did a good job considering and it's clear to see how his style would fit great in rock and pop.
The way he keeps the tempo like a friggin train. Surely Fletcher won't be disappointed. And this song Is hard as sheesh.

This is not really "jazz". I guess you might call it "fusion", which had very strong rock and funk influences - and almost always a straight feel - but there aren't that many electronic instruments or synths, and it's not that complicated like true fusion was (like something by Chick Corea). Big bands used to play this type of stuff a lot in the 1970's, for guys like Maynard Ferguson this was what they did. The most complicated sections to grab here were the intro and the ending, probably. The rest is just that funkish medium tempo groove in 7/4. For a non-jazz drummer to attempt ACTUAL jazz - swinging 8's, let alone a burning uptempo - usually ends in a miserable disaster after the first few bars. Actual jazz is something you have to study and hone for years and years...
@@ram-4 good to meet you. I understand what actual jazz is - and, to be fair, defining any genre is a bit fluid. Someone in 1959 could have very well heard Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come and claimed it wasn't jazz.
I love this series. Drummers don't go away feeling embarrassed, rather we see them express themselves in their element and how they play. A great way to show a drummers skill and the greatness of a song!

In the original the drummer sits back and supports the horns, making it sound much more relaxed. Nic’s drums push the track along so much so that it become a drum-centred track and the horns support him.
Jazz in general is such a nightmare to blind-learn, especially songs like Whiplash that change up the melody so much. Nic did a fantastic job on his first playthrough and I'd LOVE to hear him come back to this after having had some serious time with it. His dad is probably incredibly proud.
Edit: His second runthrough is just MINDBLOWING. Damn.

Funny, they gave Larnell Lewis the easiest goddamn song to play, but they gave Nic something rather complex. By take 3 he arranged something very cool. You nailed it, bud!

The first time Larnell was on was crazy tough. But was his style so wasn't too bad for him

Being familiar with the original...I liked a lot of what he did even more. I feel he often gave the song momentum it was missing. The only criticism being that he could have used softer dynamics in many places.
Still, he is a musical dynamo. There's no need to compare him to anyone else - he clearly has the chops.
I have to say that I actuall preferred his take on some parts too, but I didn't want to say it out loud until someone else said it!

Nic's use of crash cymbals during the main theme parts (where the original doesn't have drums) was great actually
Oh my gosh this was jaw dropping, he did a really good job on that 3rd run. This is one of the most difficult songs I’d imagine to just pick up without many practice runs let alone having heard the drumless track just one time through.
You can really feel 2 different influences in his music. He has his dad's big orchestral sound and some real big rock vibes too. Super fun to listen to!

It's not aggressive sounding even when punchy. It doesn't take over from the whole purpose of the composition...he maintains fidelity to the spirit of the piece.
Dude has crazy talent. I really appreciate how much he clearly cares about doing a good job to. It drove him to nail it as he zeroed in.

I saw Nic play when Genesis did their very last gig in London, safe to say he's carrying his fathers legacy on. Absolutely amazing performance, will never forget it!
I genuinely prefer his take on the song to the original. That intro is absolutely killer. Damn, this whole thing is nuts!!!
Fun fact, this song was composed by Hank Levy whose charts are mostly in odd meter. He was my high school band directors jazz professor at Towson University and has original copies of whiplash and other charts. So glad that his legacy lives on and Nic's drumming completely captures what it's like to learn this chart. Struggle till you figure it out
I like how the snare helps keep him grounded, even the ghost hits helping him keep time. You can tell he's a rock drummer -- and that's totally great. Amazing interpretation of this piece.

He did magnificently on that. It definitely has a funk feel. Goes to show how versatile drummers actually are and how key to the songs.

This was fascinating to watch and hear. His playing, especially on the intro, immediately sounded like "prog rock drummer's take on a jazz song." Part of it is the tonality of his kit (and the juge number of toms and cymbals), but so much of it was about his touch. It was heavy. Which makes sense, obviously. The tom fills could not have ever come from a jazz drummer, but the comfort with the time signature could not have ever come from a straight rock drummer.

Usually when people want to impress with prowess is when they damage a song with some out of place drumming

This was definitely the most difficult challenge up to now! And he did shockingly well! That 3rd take grooves, like a mofo! And in the 3rd take he got a little less rock and a bit more jazz.
when I saw Phil Collins in 2017 in Australia, it was my first concert I ever went to and I didn't really know much about his music then, aside from in the air tonight and a few genesis tracks. I didn't play the drums then, but one of the standout moments I had from that concert was how incredible of a drummer Nic Collins was, he carried the concert in a way and just nailed every song. I think that might have been the moment I became interested in drums, and it was partly just because of how incredible Nic is. this video shows how down to earth and genuine he is so I can say I'm glad I went to that concert.

For me it is crazy to see Nic Collins count a 7/8 beat, since his farther, Phil Collins, is the one who is famous for this time signature. Phil made this odd time into his trademark on The Cinemashow on Selling England by the Pound..... my nr. 1 track by Genesis..... And Nic,- fantastic video,- I love it. Greetings from Denmark.
I fucking love jazz now. Love the funky groove that Nic improvised. Really amazing how fast he can pick this up, because I think jazz is probably the most difficult style to play.
Bruh, As someone who played and learned through jazz I am suprised by the amount of drummers that have a fear for jazz.

I really admire his performance. As a drummer who was also forced to perform in front of a crowd with little to no rehearsal in a genre uncommon to himself I can understand his pressure, but of course his performance is out of this world. Definitely made his dad proud!

You can usually tell when somebody’s going to nail it when they say they’re going to be absolutely terrible. Humility is the Mark of a great musician.

Great snare sound. He plays good, not easy to play that type of stuff if you are not into it at all. He seems a humble guy and that is a good thing to have in a rehearsal room.

Being a big fan of both Phil Collins and Chester Thompson I was highly disappointed when I heard that Phil's *16 YEAR OLD* son was sitting on the drums for the Buenos Aires venue back in 2018. Boy was I in for a treat... Nick KILLED it! It had the best of his dad and Chester combined, and served every song perfectly (Plus, he kept them very close to the studio parts which is always a challenge when playing live)
That final take was legit so awesome 👍😎
