I will not take anything away from Roy Jones' win over Toney in November 94, but Toney did not come into that fight in the best possible condition he could be in. Toney did not really win any rounds against, but there were a few spots where he landed a couple of punches. Specifically in round number 3. I do not understand why Toney would not train properly and make the physically and mental adjustments necessary to be his absolute best condition, in the biggest and most important fight of his career. Toney may have still lost because Roy Jones' physical attributes, skills and boxing IQ, but he could've made it a closer fight. Due to Toney's lack of conditioning, he was not able to assert his will and reach down the way he did against Michael Nunn. Although, Toney did not get credit for his skills and work in the Nunn fight. Because of the lack of boxing coverage, unless it was Tyson fighting, I had to drop a quarter and get the Lakeland Ledger, I lived in Mulberry FL at the time and Lakeland was the closest "big" city. On the front of the sports page was picture of Nunn laying flat. As I read the article, the tone was set that Toney was being completely dominated by Nunn and had not won a single round, nor landed a significant punch the entire fight until he caught Nunn with a "lucky punch". The article did have the official scores, but I do not recall what they were. I would not get to see the Toney Nunn until 95 or 96, I paid $40 to a guy out of Minnesota named Kirk or Kurt Notimer who had hundreds in not thousands of fights on VHS and for a two hour tape it was $40. As a I watched the fight I realized that Toney was getting to Nunn and landing and it was not a one-sided fight as the media portraited. James, like Riddick Bowe, could never turn down a meal. but James moving up to 168, 175, whatever the cruiserweight limit is, and heavyweight to win world titles out of the 3 weight classes points to how good of a fighter he was and could of been even greater possibly had he been able to control his life style better. It didn't help that his mother owned a bakery and probably was a great cook.

At the end of the fight, I was surprised by Tony's ability to slip Roy's punches. James used the philly-shell to perfection. And he had power. Something not seen with philly-shells. I have been a fan ever since. I love both Roy and James. Tow of the greatest to ever do it.

Toney was at 215, had to lose almost 40 pounds in a 1-month timeframe to make weight for Jones (he BARELY made it at that!) and that has always been a thorn in his ass, and the one fight he regrets. I've only been a boxing fan for 5 years, but this is the most impressive boxing performance I've ever seen. I have it alongside Ali vs Williams and Anderson Silva vs Forrest Griffin as the most transcendent fight perfomances I've ever seen. Toney is one of best in any era. The Roy Jones fight was agreed by kallan the manager without Toney consent, he was 5 stone overweight. He had to drop all that in a few weeks to make weight. Last day he literally had sweats on a hot baths. He was exhausted. He never trained much in that camp as he was never much of a trainer but he was so over weight he couldn't perform. This is why the fight Toney looked drained and exhausted. He was so disgusted with the humiliation his manager put him through the following day he went to shoot her, he had the gun and in car and his mum warned kallan he was going kill her. Toney was a ferocious eater, he was always massively overweight why he went up in weights. He had a fridge next to his bed. He was so talented but if he truly dedicated himself to boxing with proper camps and a diet he would of been the best and Jones would never beaten him. The most gifted fighter after Salvador Sanchez who Toney and Jones both say is best ever. Gerarad McClellan was probally the nearest thing to a prime Toney at his peak when he took boxing seriously.
