Roy Jones Jr vs James Toney 18.11.1994 - IBF World Super Middleweight Championship
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 жов 2015
- The IBF World Super Middleweight title fight between two of the best pound for pound fighters of the era. This fight would propel Roy Jones Jr into boxing super stardom. More info below...
James Toney was the IBF World Super Middleweight champion. He was undefeated in 46 fights with 44 wins, 29 by KO and 2 draws. He was the number 2 ranked pound for pound fighter in the world according to The Ring magazine and he was a 6-5 favorite to win. He was a former IBF and IBC World Middleweight champion before moving up in weight and winning the IBF Super Middleweight title from Iran Barkley in 1993. Toney had successfully defended his Super Middleweight title 3 times already however there were rumors Toney was struggling to make the Super Middleweight limit and he entered training camp weighing over 200lbs!
Roy Jones Jr was the third ranked best pound for pound fighter in the world and the current IBF World Middleweight champion. He had beaten Bernard Hopkins in 1993 to win the belt and in his last outing had successfully defended it against Thomas Tate. Jones, like Toney, was also undefeated with a 26-0 record and although he had beaten some experienced challengers he was yet to be known as the boxing legend he would become.
Roy Jones was in complete control for a majority of the fight. He was landing more punches and was the noticeably quicker of the two. Toney was still able to land some big shots but he could never pin Roy down long enough to take advantage. In round 3, Roy would catch Toney off guard and off balance while taunting and put him on the canvas. Toney was embarrassed more than hurt when he got to his feet and by the end of 12 rounds Roy had earned himself a deserved unanimous decision.
Roy Jones Jr would eventually move up to the light heavyweight ranks and become one of the best, if not THE best, light heavyweight champions of all time. In 2003 he even won the WBA World Heavyweight title from John Ruiz. In 2009 Roy Jones would try add a World Cruiser weight title to his list of achievements by challenging IBO champion Danny Green, but lost surprisingly by 1st round TKO. As of 2015 Roy Jones Jr was still boxing and looking for another cruiser weight world title shot...
James Toney immediately moved up to the light heavyweight ranks following this loss however his first fight at the new weight didn't go exactly as planned when Montell Griffin beat him by majority decision over 12 rounds. He quickly regained his form however and ended up winning the vacant WBU Light Heavyweight title in 1995, the vacant IBO World Cruiser weight title in 1997, the vacant IBA Super Cruiser weight title in 2001 and the IBF World Cruiser weight title in 2003. In late 2003 Toney made the permanent leap into the heavyweight division beating Evander Holyfield by TKO in his first outing and going on to capture the IBA and IBU World Heavyweight titles. As of 2015 James Toney is still boxing at heavyweight and it's hard for me to even imagine him at one point weighing 160lbs... - Спорт
a laid back Saturday watching classic fights like Roy Jones and others is what I call a good day.
Sincere Supreme indeed.
trust me even better on sunday
i know im randomly asking but does anyone know of a method to log back into an instagram account..?
I was dumb forgot my login password. I would love any help you can give me
@Easton Francisco Instablaster ;)
Wow I happen to read your comment and I'm literally watching this fight on a beautiful Saturday right now on my phone lol
That was one of the greatest 12 round performances by a single fighter that I’ve ever seen. Toney was an undefeated champion and Jones just absolutely schooled him. Crazy
Wait till you find out about Terrence Crawford
@@classof3kgreat performance by Bud.
But schooling Toney will always be more impressive
Doesn't compare to a dominating tko of an undefeated 3 belt holder and becoming undisputed in your second weight class.@@yvans.
People blow shit way out of proportion. How could he 'school' one of the most talented, well-rounded fighters ever? Nobody taught Toney a damn thing in the ring.
@@classof3kErrol Spence wasn’t the same after multiple car accidents and only fought twice in 4 years going into Bud fight. James Toney is a peak HOFamer right here. Spence will never be a HOFamer and is lucky if he is half the fighter Toney was.
Two of the slickest , smoothest boxers in history of the sport . Two of the best to ever do it.
No.Not Toney
Yep. At the end of RJJ's career when asked whom was the TOUGHEST boxer he ever faced he said "Best BOXER hands down James Toney". Shear toughness, Jorge Castro. Hardest puncher, Merqui Sosa, by far. (of course this was before he exhibitioned Tyson.)
@@javiruiz9993 yes Toney wtf lol.
@@emptyjumplow that dude don’t considerate Toney slick 🤦🏾♂️😭
@@javiruiz9993 what do know toney
Jones later said toney had the best defense of any fighter he ever fought.
Cool
Rjj missed a lot of his shots and he was blinding fast in this fight
Jones also said Toney was his toughest opponent
Yeah right!
Roy was crazy athletic back in the day.
His quick twitch speed is insane
Like Ryan Garcia, Floyd type quick. Built like a tank too at 168 lbs.
@@Houshhe might be faster overall. Ryan has a fast left hook only
roys faster than both
James toney 26 and roy jones 25 that era was amazing
One of my favorite things about James Tony as a boxer was how relaxed and calm he was in all his fights.
Then you must love Mayweather
Just another day at the office.
Yea he's a real G
@@JohnSmith-su3ze Audley Harrison was both more calmer and relaxed than both Toney or Maywether. So calm in fact he would often forget he was boxing and not throw a single punch throughout a fight👊🏽
@@JohnSmith-su3zeyeah I do.
I think being calm is secret to not expending energy.
Caleb plant is never calm that's why he always gases out.
He can't sustain his defense because it's not based on calm confidence and rhythm
The fact Roy made Toney look silly in their primes is a testament to Roy's greatness. I thought I was watching this fight sped up lol Roy's speed and accuracy was ridiculous
Roy was missing damn near every punch. Toney is as slick a defensive fighter as anyone ever was.
Toney wasn’t that good, Moore was better
@@schumi9xwdc nah bro you're better than both of them
@@MrMarco855Behave! I could hear Roy's punches LANDING!!!!
you clearly dont know much about boxing😅even Roy admits Toneys a better fighter
Roy Jones Jr. Was a gentleman yet confident fighter, he'd get cocky during fights but that's part of boxing.
This fight is so under-rated this is one of the best displays of boxing skill ever toney’s Philly shell defence and counters and Roys unorthodox offensive style 👌🏽 what a beautiful dual
To see someone of Toney’s calibre get owned was incredible.
The Speed Wizard vs. The Defense Master, GREAT!!
One fighter is both and more all in one
Jones reflexes were superhuman.
when the best fought the best in their primes. this is what boxing is really all about.
Amen.
Tony thought he couldn't be beat he didn't know he was running into one of the greatest fighters of all time in any weight class!!
Weedy Guitar Studio tony wasn’t in the best shape. He moved up in weight after. He would have done waaaay better.
@@pauliesarachelli5246 Excuses
VERILY.
@@pauliesarachelli5246 Yeah. No. Toney would’ve done better, but he still doesn’t beat Jones. Roy’s prime IS like no other. No one beats him in his prime. Toney with a better weight cut wouldnt change anything at all. Roy’s style is Toney’s nightmare. Distance and clinch (Roy) vs close range dirty boxing and defense. Also the fact you use an excuse as to why Toney didn’t do his best when Roy barely tried himself proves my point more. Roy never had a bad time in this fight. Toney had plenty, and one better camp isn’t gonna change that
@@thorn3802 I beg to differ. Sugar Ray Robinson would have.
Roy Jones is still my favorite all-time fighter.
Dude was insane in his prime.
I will agree he went a little too long but it’s hard to let go of what you love doing.
I respect it. He lives for what he loves, not for our judgment. He's already given us more than what we thought was possible, whatever he does to enjoy his life is well-deserved to me.
He was 49-1 (50-0 because he was winning but threw a punch after dropping his opponent) when he got knocked out for the first time . If he retired after getting belt from tarver you could argue he was the goat at basically 50-0 like Floyd Mayweather except he did that at multiple higher weight classes in arguably a better era
@@hottakes6078
I think he still in the conversation. His best years rival or eclipse anyone’s best years. Nobody holds Jordan’s years with the wizards against him….lol
Mayweather made a perfect record criteria for goat….but to me that don’t matter as long as you avenge yourself. Could Floyd have beaten pac-man 2 of 3? The world will never know because of pride. Ali lost….he’s the champ of champs….this can go on and on because it’s fun to talk about….lol
@@brumph7256 Facts. Roy is my favorite of all-time too. Roy looked much more spectacular than Floyd in his prime, far more entertaining while also winning.
I agree. It was tough to watch him fight Calzaghe at the time because Roy was past his prime. Calzaghe never fought anyone in their prime and was the most overrated boxer I've ever seen.
Roy was awesome back then
The skill and boxing IQ of both these fighters ......Immense. I loved this fight when I watched it live on TV at 19 years old I love it now!!
Was 21. Times flies!😮
I'm not sure there's anybody in history at 168 could've beaten Roy Jones or james Toney this night boxing at it finest . Super hot offense against Icey smooth defense
Hamza Khaliq yea would of been a great fight, but styles make fights and Toney would of made benn work hard and counter him.
@@H.K.5 Mcllelan had brain damage from Julian Jackson. No way would Benn beat Toney, he wouldn’t be able to land any shits on Toney z
@@m-cra1370 For sure McClellan's brain damage came from Julian Jackson
No doubt about it
@@H.K.5 Chris Eubank would have beaten Roy Jones and Toney

Toney's face right before round 10 was him realizing for the 1st time that there was someone who was just better than he was.
You can't put it any more truthfully or plainly than that.
In better shape
Nah man it was more of a "so what the fuck am I going to do now" look..
it was a I'm sure missing my steroids look
almost ten years later he won against steroids headbutter holyfield
Classic example of why fighters study film. Roy studied film on Toney for weeks in preparation while Toney barely watched film on Roy thinking just another fight. Terrible mistake by Toney and got embarrassed. Toney's victories over Nunn and McCallum made him complacent.
Roy Jones, one of the most underrated fighters, speed power, and an unusual reach!!
Roy Jones uderrated? LMFAO
yeah dawg he isn't underated at all. one of the best p4p fighters of all time and no one really disagrees with that. maybe the fastest boxer ever. after he won the heavyweight title he wasn't the same fighter but a prime Roy Jones jr was actually unbeatable.
Roy Jones isn't under-rated at all, most people consider him top three all time if not GOAT...
Underated by who exactly plz explain?
He’s definitely underrated he should be in everyone’s top 5 and he’s not
Toneys defence..... I'm literally speechless. How the fk did both of them leave the same way they looked on the way in with so many punches thrown. Holy shit a prime Jones is crazy he didn't even remotely tire and could have easily put in more work (just didn't want to get caught)
Pound for pound ounce for ounce this was the best performance in a ring for the last 40 years considering the calibre of Toney who is an undefeated future hall of fame slick as hell boxer , I mean to shut Toney out completely was absolutely incredible!
I agree. Most talent in one fight since probably Leonard v Hearns 1.
1000%🎯
Crawford’s last performance was the best I’ve seen on live tv. Too young to see this classic live on tv. I’m sure during its time tho, it was legendary.
@@alsimmons3567the issue is that Spence isn’t near Toney…
I knew bud was better
@@alsimmons3567 bad comparison. Spence isn't on the same skill level as Toney, plus he was on the decline. RJJ and Toney were both prime and elite level skilled boxers and RJJ dominated Toney, which no other boxer did.
Embarrasing when Toney raises his hand in victory at the end of the fight. A boxing masterclass for Jones. Surely Jones would be in the top 10 fighters of all time had he retired after 50 fights?
Toney looked surprised that he lost? Was he serious?
Roy's gotta be Top 10 all time...
Jones still, no one beat him in this prime.
Jones was a phenom! People have no idea how good this guy was in his prime.
It was hard to watch him late in his career losing to guys he would have beaten easily Roy was something else
Another silly comment. Well done.
Roy jONES is so humble and a legend
Two great fighters
TRUE!!
Toney had Jones hurt in round 5 and got his respect. You could tell how hesitant Jones was to start the 6th round, Toney should of put the pressure to begin the 6th, that was his only chance because of how hesitant Jones was to start that round, but he didn’t put the pressure on and let Jones get comfortable and back into his rhythm again. But wow Jones is so fast..Prime Jones is the best fighter that I’ve ever seen to be honest.
as i watch this fight 25 years later I can't help but to notice that Toney did not use his jab enough. He should have been doubling and tripling his jab all night to get inside of Jones and push him back up to the ropes where Roy was vulnerable. Jones was masterful punching backwards. One of the few guys who could knock you out going backwards. If he's on the ropes you take that trait away.
Maybe. I'm much more familiar with RJJ than Toney, but RJJ nullified a lot of jabs with the leaping left. Normally the jab would be faster so you had to time the hook, but RJJ's flying hook was ridiculously fast AND he could time it, so it acted as a check hook. For southpaws, he'd switch to the straight with head movement to counter the jab. I could be wrong, but I fee like while other fighters' try to establish the jab early, RJJ's game plan is to dismantle the jab early.
Also Roy in his prime did just fine against the ropes. I forget which fight it is, but he had his hands behind his back and then BAM. Knockdown with the right hand
Do agree was kinda Weird feel like this could a closer fight if he gota bit more Active
He couldn't do it. Against Jones, that's a great risk to take
@@thorn3802Glenn Kelly.
Roy in his prime was something super super special. What a time to be alive!!! Thank God for blessing us with all the beautiful masters of their crafts…. However, Larry Merchant was never one of them… 👎
Well said!
What a tactical battle....technique vs talent....counter punching vs agression....shoulder roll vs punching & dissapearing. Really a war...it's incredible how well roy managed this fight in the later rounds...❤
"WAR" !!!????
Looked like a 1 SIDED MISMATCH in my opinion.
LMAO
Roy was too good man. He may be the greatest fighter ever at his peak.
Bruh I’m new to boxing and have Floyd Maywheathered myself down Mike Tyson Lane, took stops in Jack Johnonville, visited Cesar Chavez drive very briefly, stopped by the Ryan Garcia apartment complex, and the Adrian Bronner projects. There i met Tank Davis and have settled there for now.
But while enjoying all of Davis’s fights i got bored and watched Roy Jones Jr. and i have fallen in love. This man’s defense and quickness was other level. Then to make that rap song and come out to Thuggish Rugged Bone in a damn suit is INSANE.
I wish i was old enough to seen his and Tyson’s primes
I'm 35 so I only caught RJJ prime but Ill tell you man Roy and Mike won my dad A LOT OF MONEY! lol.
At 26:40 Toney whirls around with a left hook that barely missed Jones, the crowd reacted because it was an unusual punch that nearly clipped Jones. Right after at 26:46 watch the ref Richard Steele come into center screen with a big smile on his face. He was entertained by the punch himself.
But he didn't connect????
Steele might as well have put on some gloves as much as he was interfering
this was a great fight i so rmember whre i was what time watching this thank you for posting this. thank you
Roy jones...!!! The greatest, a Beast
Thank u 4posting this high definition quality. :-) 👍
Roy's a class act. He'd invented some of his own moves that work well for him. There's fighters and there's boxers and Roy Jones Jr. was a phenomenol boxer! And always exciting to watch. I love the way he'll move to the one side of his opponent and come around with a wicked hook on the opposite side. Or one way Roy uses to reposition himself is a punch to the stomach as he moves in close enough to turn his opponent around leaving Jones in a more advantageous position.
Man Jones was like boxing poetry in the ring idk if we're ever see another 😢😢
I wish HBO with Foreman and crew done this fight ..
That ‘s my dude Roy Jones Jr….He makes his fight against others exciting! ❤
Back in the golden days where fights we want actually happens 💯🥊.
True
jones was so gifted with his strikes!all time fav and thx roy for introducing me to salvador sanchez!
Roy in his mid 20’s was a pleasure to watch. He put on a boxing clinic and beat a good champion with speed, foot work and combinations. He also defeated him mentally. It had to be frustrating for James to get hit with a 3 punch combination and Roy was gone before he could counter.
For me Jones is the GOAT... 49 wins, 1 lost (by disqualification) until his second fight with Tarver
Conditioning,Speed,Defense,Stamina, And Most Of All Stay Focused at Training Are The 5# Elements Of Making A Skilled And Great Fighter (Roy Jones Jr) Was A Great Fighter 1 Of The G.O.A.T In Our Time ✊👑🐐🌎💯

JAMES TONEY IS A LEGEND .
Would have liked to have seen them have a trilogy, just have a feeling Toney could have tested him more
This is one of my favorite fights of all-time. Hopefully future generations will enjoy the magnificence of this fight.
Roy's speed was awesome.

that speed is beyond insane - never seen anything like it since
Sono un fan di toney amo il suo modo di boxare ma questo Roy Jones era troppa roba per chiunque
Around 16:45 has made me laugh so hard I'm about to go insane. Roy Jones Jr truly is the best pound for pound....possibly ever. Not only can he win, he creates hilarious boxing magic that you've never seen before. Art
You aren't wrong my man....I wish it could have been Jones Jr. Instead of Mayweather who fought Paul in that exhibition....
Mayweather is too careful, Roy Jones has a vicious streak, and would have given Paul the beating we wanted to see him take...

Best of the best fighting each other in their prime, amazing fight
Watching this fight in 2022 makes me remember how amazing Roy Jones Jr was in the ring. He really is probably the best p4p fighter of all time.

Roy Jones was real good,,,James Toney had Heart
Are you serious toney was 44-0 and a champion
@@vernonholliday8632 don't get it wrong James , great powerful pound 4 pound champion ever and he will go into the Hall of Fame probably before Roy Jones,Roy had speed on James, that's all, they both are my great two champions 💜💜😎👑👑
A shame Toney was having weight troubles. His defense was superb.
Toney had fought 4 months prior to fighting Roy, thats very active for today's fighters, but for Toney back then, 4 months was a layoff. His manager Kallen would keep him fighting every 4-8 weeks because she knew he would balloon up in weight. And thats exactly what he did, put on over 50 lbs, went into training camp at over 220 lbs. He essentially had fat camp
James toney until this day has never gotten the credit he deserves. James Tony was literally of one of one type of boxer. The man never trained The conventional way by the way. His way of training was sparring hundreds of rounds. That man was a monster. You never seen him get hurt ever In his entire career. And he never moved around in the ring with his feet like that slight head movements a true practitioner of the Philly shell..James Tony was a BEAST!!!!! KEEP IN MIND THIS IS WHEN ROY JONES WAS IN HIS PRIME. JAMES TONY AGAINST ROY JONES IN HIS PRIME HAD ROY JONES JUST LOOKING LIKE AN AVERAGE FIGHTER. THIS WAS AN AVERAGE FIGHT
Interesting!
The ‘90s was a cool time to be a boxing enthusiast ❤
Head-Banging Legends, CLASSIC!!😁😊💪💪👊👊

Roy Jones Jr didn't have a lot of power but made up for it with super natural speed
Jones uses his dive bomb punch at 8:52 opens arms wide Toney doesn`t know whether hook or right hand is coming and Roy lands two hooks to the side of Toney`s body.
The two announcers bias was funny AF! 😂
james toney is underated boxer. he was start in boxing when he was skinny (light weight to heavy weight) and still... not so many people know him
To be clear; there was no knockdown in this fight.
Jones is smart he really literary giving Toney chance to hit him

RJJ came into BTNH Thuggish Ruggish Bone. Lights out that's my Dawg right there.
Mike Jr 94 was a great year for hip hop. Actually the whole 90's.. Toney comes in with Black Superman..Above The Law..
What I lot of people fail to really pay attention to was the respect both fighters had for one another… Toney was a beast and he made absolutely no excuses! He tipped his hat to the better fighter that night, and Jones the same both were class acts that night… because I’ve seen Toney get very disrespectful with other fighters… not so much Jones, but Toney yes. Great fight by to elite fighters in their primes… Something we don’t see anymore.
jones in his prime pound for pound the greatest
Absolutely great fight, and Roy Jones was absolutely better, like a bee
and graceful like a butterfly!
It's a shame they didn't fight again. They could have had a good trilogy of fights.
Unusual for an American commentator to talk over the seconds between rounds.
The called knockdown in the 3rd round was bullshit. The left hook landed but Jones's forward momentum made him land on Toney, that's what forced Toney back, not the punch. Jones didn't land that hook with his glove, he hit Toney with his wrist and his glove was wide of Toney's face by a few inches. Toney wasn't going anywhere but he was in an awkward position when Jones landed on him with his body. It wasn't easy to see in real time but I replayed it several times in slow motion. Toney did an unbelivable job keeping his butt off of the mat aftrer the collision. He took 3 or 4 steps straight back in a sitting position and maintained himself until he hit the ropes.
Through 3 rounds not much has happened, Jones has touched him up here and there but nothing to brag about. Same with Toney, he only landed a few so-so shots himself. I thought Jones won easy but it hasn't been like that yet.
This fight was a testament to how good Tony was. Prime Jones obliterated everyone he fought. While Tony lost this fight, he looked the best of any other fighter that faced Prime Jones and was one (if not the only) to not be utterly obliterated. He actually even had good moments and displayed the best defense of any other against Prime Jones. Jones was just on a different level even for him. But you see the reason in this fight that Jones named him as one of the best fighters he faced.
when roy was in his prime i dont think floyde maywether could even beat him ..he was that damn good !!!!!
