James toney was one of a kind very special fighter , watching him spar Gerald McClellan was beautiful his defense being patient with beautiful aggresive counterpunching.
I trained with James daily and sparred with him numerous times when he was Middleweight and Super Middleweight champion. I have him in my top 5 pound for pound of all time.
Maybe the p4p greatest head-to-head matchup to ever occur in real life in all of boxing history, especially in terms of skill and overall boxing IQ/ability? When else in boxing history have two guys the same size both in their primes at the true historic p4p level of Toney and McCallum ever gotten into the ring with one another? Maybe Hearns vs Hagler and Hearns vs Leonard? Or Toney vs Roy Jones and Toney vs Nunn? Ali vs Frazier? Chavez vs Whitaker? Arguello vs Pryor? Maybe these legendary matchups as well. But the point is, it’s extremely rare, and Toney vs McCallum was easily one of the greatest pure boxing matchups to ever occur p4p in the sport’s history
James Toney is one of my favorites, watch him fight Holyfield, he gave Holyfield fits,Toney was a exceptional fighter,he struggled with weight but he could box! Was never scared!
I think that James Toney vs Carlos Monzon would have looked a lot like the Holyfield fight. He would have given Monzon fits; he is the one man that would have frustrated Monzon. Hagler and Robinson wouldn't have done it the way James would have.
Old timer summed it up perfectly, "Poetry in motion" JAMES LIGHTSOUT TONEY.. Last of a true dying breed. The only one doing it today is BUD CRAWLFORD "Terrence" Before him it was Andrei Ward. In my top 5 of all time, Lightout..
Only Crawford??? Just out of curiosity, then what about Spence and Canelo and Inoue and Lomachenko and Lopez and Usyk and Fury??? Or the Charlo brothers or Devin Haney? Or Gary Russel Jr? Or above all, in terms of pure boxing prowess... SHAKUR STEVENSON?
Spence and Canelo and Inoue and Lopez are tremendous “boxer-punchers” of the highest level. Lomachenko and Shakur Stevenson and Gary Russel Jr are tremendous pure boxers, as are Fury and Usyk by the standards of the heavier weight classes. The Charlo brothers and Devin Haney and the immensely powerful Jaron Ennis are impressively slick and skillful boxer-punchers as well. The rising Vergil Ortiz Jr is like the great Gennady Golovkin in that he’s a great boxer-puncher and swarmer hybrid. Anthony Joshua is a very good boxer puncher as well, by heavyweight standards at least.
JAMES USE TO RUN HE DIDNT JOG HE PRACTICALLY SPRINTED FOR FOUR MILES I TAN WITH HIM TO PUT IT SIMPLE IT WAS AND WILL ONLY BE ONE JAMES LIGHTS OUT TONEY NO ONE COULD SIT IN THE POCKET LIKE HIM IN HISTORY PERIOD HE THE GREATEST AT WHAT DID PERIOD!!! Light out Baby
My favorite fighter of all time! I wanted to be just like him as a kid! I think at 5'9 he would have been best as a Heavyweight at 180lbs lean or 200-205 VERY soft at the most without PED's. Mike Nunn v Toney definitely in the running for my Favorite fight too!
@@qward2174 I see that In a new elite fighter name Boots Ennis to have punching power from both stance on the fly and fight inside with combinations , Balance ,IQ and ring generalship but most of all his ability to defensive counter punch catch and shoot this boxer is well trained by his father brilliant!!!
Toney woulda been fine as a heavyweight in that era of turmoil but unfortunately he used the division having no weight limit as a means to eat whatever and whenever he pleased. If he weighed 210 lbs none of those heavyweights woulda hit him
No disrespect, but this ain't exactly the way it was. There was a white guy named Greg that he started out with , and before Jackie was Johnny Ace rip. Toney ended up being a Great fighter no doubt and one of the best ever, but, I know a bit about it . Toney would come to Livonia to train some.He was at 8th St on Weddel when he was with Johnny Ace. Clarence Adams was running it and his sons Tank and Bones in training. Smitty was training fighters with his "mock" boxing technique. Vince Hopper rip, Spencer Chavis, John Hanna, Hurley Sneed, Jeff Styers were there . To my memory, he went back to Livonia a bit to spar, then Jackie opened a Gym on 5 mile in Redford. Jackie was a Great manager and Toney a great fighter, but let's not forget Greg.
Great enter view, I forget coach name but he was very accurate on everything he spoke about James toney and boxing. But what I asked if you can do and interview with the sons of the second coach he spoke of. Keith Lee who recently passed away, so is not able to speak on a lot of the James toney topic. He also had several other fighters that he turned into world champions. And his name should be brought up in a lot of conversations. Especially around the Detroit Mich area He’s a legendary coach. And I would love If you did a segment about him. His coaching Defense styles and techniques . He also had a son that he coach that box professionally Keith Lee jr. That still live in the city, also three others that boxed. And one the coaches now marcus Phillip Lee.
Road work is a waste of time..boxers need to get rid of it unless you enjoy it, it causes unnecessary injuries...instead do some interval sprinting on grass and spend your time more effectively in the ring and doing circuit training..
James Toney vs Carlos Monzon would have been my dream fight. It would have been a true chess match. He is the one guy outside of Robinson or Hagler that would cause Carlos real problems.
All these current fighters well at least most of them anyway just a name a few, tank/Charlo/Crawford/Spence/Haney/and I’m sure I’m leaving a few people out. They talk the talk by James walk the walk and he truly would fight anybody anytime. Just to name a few fighters that are active that I feel would fight any time, Sean Porter early on, Loma, fury, cotto, Gatti, Holyfield, corrales, Tyson & of course the Pac

AJ ain’t gonna learn now, it’s too late now. He’s stuck with that amateur trainer with amateur skills. He has never been taught pro skills. So he’s hardly improved since turning pro. As soon as things got more complex and high level he is lost
JT was one in a million , one of the most skilled craftsmen to ever lace em up and tough as they come.

James Toney learnt from legends like Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott. Amazing fighter.
Ezzard Lewis Frazier that era was really the best era
Both amaaaazing fighters. Jersey Joe is one of my all time favourite fighters!
