Even though there has to be a winner (unless it's a draw of course), when fights like this take place, there are no real losers because the fight itself becomes almost bigger than the men/women involved. This fight showed the crazy willpower of two men, and the skill to go with it. These are the fights I love most. Two opposing styles from two completely different athletes, but the difference in their styles, and their approaches is what makes a great fight like this possible. If you put two counter punchers together, it can be a snooze fest if you aren't a hardcore boxing fan that knows what is happening. It's when you put a pressure fighter with a high work rate against a more defensive fighter, or you put a heavy handed KO artist against a boxer/puncher that the fireworks start to fly. This fight between Toney and Jirov,, and the Holyfield vs Qawi fight are the best cruiserweight bouts I have ever seen because of the contrast in styles. Actually, both fights might be up there with some of the best fights regardless of weight class, or era.
Correct result by the judges. Lederman's scorecard is a joke. Look at the stat box at 49:00. Although JT threw 220 less punches after 11 rounds, he LANDED 109 MORE punches and almost doubled Jirov's % landed. Throwing more punches won't count for much unless they land. This is a testament to JT's unbelievable defense. It was also clear from Jirov's swollen face at the end of the bout that the more effective shots were thrown by JT.
This was the first fight for me where I realized in real time that Lederman will score for the fighter literally just for moving forward, more often than not. Toney won 8 rounds clearly (an argument can be made for 9), and Jirov lost two points between the knockdown and that ridiculous low blow...and he STILL had this fight a draw. His scorecard is almost as bad as the judge who scored Mayweather-Canelo even. Jirov was effectively finished as a top fighter as a result of the beating Toney gave him, whereas in his next fight, James moved up to heavyweight and stopped Holyfield.
What is amazing is that Jirov, along with Michael Nunn, was the second undefeated southpaw Toney beat using the Philly Shell. I don't recall anyone else ever successfully using it against a world class southpaw.
@@poweroftheriff He tried Philly Shell for a fight and a half. But notice, after two fights he went to high guard against southpaws and got touched heavy them didn't go back to it. Watch the fights then tell if I am wrong.
Really interesting that the commentary was so skewed in favor of Jirov. This is a fight that shows you what a commentator values most in scoring a fight: Jirov landing the highest number of punches vs. Toney's far more effective aggression with fewer, heavier punches that, while fewer, had a much clearer impact on the opponent. Normally I think judges err on the side of the busier fighter. But this was a case where I think Toney's aggression was just so much more effective than Jirov's that I have a hard time seeing this as anything other than a clear win for Toney. Toney's punches were taking a clear toll on Jirov more and more, and Toney never seemed hurt
@@glenm99 A hundred more punches? According to compubox, Toney landed 380 punches to Jirov's 411. I still agree Lederman's score was pretty wack though, Toney's punches had way more impact and I think most judges would probably score similarly to the three official judges here
I have to say I respect these trainer's,greatly,a ton of respect, specially for the old school. But some of that corner instruction it makes you think, they just fell a little short, they tell the Russian, you have to throw more punches.these guys punch count was already very high, and what's throwing more punches when your hardest shots aren't able to land.what a great referee!!
Agreed. They'd clearly decided coming in that Toney would break from the pace and didn't have a backup plan. To be fair, Brooks tries to get Jirov to punch more effectively. After the first, Brooks says, 'Remember, when he plants that foot, step around. Get a clean shot.' So they tried to prepare for Toney's elusiveness but where do you find a sparring partner who can give you that sort of defensive slickness? Later on, Brooks gives pretty clear advice ('You gotta move your head!') but by that point Jirov is too battered to think. A game dude but he took a hideous beating and was never the same.
Great fight i initially missed the fight watching now a true classic both worriers 👊🏿Toney's precision 👌🏿 he still had it and Jirov work rate tactic was spot on.
Toney got a raw deal when networks would not stop showing this moment when he looked bad against RJJ. At this moment in his life, Toney would have destroyed Roy in a rematch. A good fighter at any weight.
Only 437 idiots who know nothing about boxing would give this a thumbs down...They would have been better off watching WWE 😂 Great fight from real warriors. 💪🏾

That body shot around the kidney in the 12th round by Toney was so devastating and that sets up the knock down. But hats off to both fighters for a brilliant display of courage, Toney shows more experience with his counters and slips.
That body shot right at the end really hurt Jirov, he was out on his feet, and when he took that shot to the body I think his head finally just said fuckit we're done.
Both of these guys are on my all time favorite list, wish JT would have fought more at 190, his most effective weight imo. Jirov also fought the wrong fight here, was capable of boxing but didn’t. Only movers ever beat an in shape Toney.
I don't know what fight Harold was watching. James absolutely dominated the guy. How can he score the fight even with 1 point deduction and 1 knockout.
Lampley even lied about the punch stats at the end. 411 for Jirov and 386 for Toney??? How tf when Toney was just winning by over 100 punches with a 45-24 connect percentage!?

This fight between Toney and Jirov,, and the Holyfield vs Qawi fight are the best cruiserweight bouts I have ever seen because of the contrast in styles. Actually, both fights might be up there with some of the best fights regardless of weight class, or era.
Agree they’re both winners in a sporting sense, but both losers in terms of what gruelling fights like this do to you long term.

Lederman has always had weird scoring.
I think he's just old and senile, he needs eye glasses not only to watch the fight but to read a book on the sweet science
@@LowTierFallout When my scorecard agrees with his, I start thinking I made a mistake.
His scorecard was full of shit at the 10th round check in..
Vassiliy Jirov is one of the toughest men I've ever seen.
How Toney starred at Jirov right at the final bell, like as if to say "is that it?".
I saw that fight when it happened back in the day and I still don't agree with how far those judges had it apart .
have you look at the stats? lol
That was epic. Im at the gym on the treadmill cheering😂😂
Just listen to the punches...insane inside fighting.
That was two grown ass men fighting. Nobody should ever question either one of these warriors.
never seen the like of this, a true war, Jirov outclassed but so tough
One of the best fights of all time.
What is amazing is that Jirov, along with Michael Nunn, was the second undefeated southpaw Toney beat using the Philly Shell. I don't recall anyone else ever successfully using it against a world class southpaw.
Yea I heard it hard to use the Philly Shell on southpaws but James Toney turned that around
Floyd did it to Pacquiao, Zab Judah, Sharmba Mitchell, Victor Ortiz and Robert Guerrero - all former world champ southpaws 🤷
@@poweroftheriff He tried Philly Shell for a fight and a half. But notice, after two fights he went to high guard against southpaws and got touched heavy them didn't go back to it. Watch the fights then tell if I am wrong.
forcing Jirov to square up and infight was key to Toney's strategy in nullifying the southpaw advantage.
@@poweroftheriff I loved watching Mitchell fight.
They say the Philly shell stance doesn’t work in a southpaw vs orthodox James proved it wrong.
Boxing are a great sport.
Itss a good figth
Super Klasse!!! J. T. einer der beste Boxer der Welt, aller Zeiten!!!
Jirrov was also the Champion
Jirov didn't even land more punches; he just threw more. Toney landed over a hundred more punches. Lederman's score card was atrocious.
@@glenm99 A hundred more punches? According to compubox, Toney landed 380 punches to Jirov's 411. I still agree Lederman's score was pretty wack though, Toney's punches had way more impact and I think most judges would probably score similarly to the three official judges here
That is one of the best fights I've seen both Warriors but hey that's why they call him lights out
Outlandish scoring and I'm a James Toney fan.
Respect for Both!
One of the best 12th round fights I seen.
That last round makes me cry every time I watch it 2 real warriors ready to lay all down
You can train a boxer and force him in rough training. Like jirov went through. But if didn't live it all the training in the worlrd won't help.
Thank you for this fight in good quality! Please post these fights in the same quality: Evander Holyfield vs James Toney; Hasim Rahman vs Oleg Maskaev - 2;
Unsportsmanlike attitude of Jirov, he did not shake Toney's hand.
And Toney wouldn't Touch gloves with Jirrov before the fight. No harm no foul
Jirov had the best entrance music ever!!! 😎
Favourite fight of mine. Seen it so many times.
James Toney Boxing skills are just Beautiful, literally breaks his opponents down!
The ref called James name like a pissed off parent 😂
That 12th round...WOW!
Enough Time for sure.
Pure greatness
That body shot around the kidney in the 12th round by Toney was so devastating and that sets up the knock down. But hats off to both fighters for a brilliant display of courage, Toney shows more experience with his counters and slips.
James Toney is my favorite boxer of all time. He is as real as it gets.
That body shot right at the end really hurt Jirov, he was out on his feet, and when he took that shot to the body I think his head finally just said fuckit we're done.
Canelo es boliviano
Lol forreal took whatever last reserve of energy away from him
The body shot but the left right hand with same hand shocked Jirov. Didn't expect that.
Great fight what a great boxer toney is !!
Both of these guys are on my all time favorite list, wish JT would have fought more at 190, his most effective weight imo. Jirov also fought the wrong fight here, was capable of boxing but didn’t. Only movers ever beat an in shape Toney.
Great observation
For sure this was a serious fight
That was fantastic fight thoroughly enjoyed it thank you very much👍😉
Watched this fight at least 100 times !!!
Toney’s best performance 🎭 masterpiece
I swear 🤬James Tony is/was a Serious problem. Hell - a - difficult
Great Great fight, thank you for uploading it. 👍👍
I don't know what fight Harold was watching. James absolutely dominated the guy. How can he score the fight even with 1 point deduction and 1 knockout.
Jirov remind me of Ricky Hatton
Lampley even lied about the punch stats at the end. 411 for Jirov and 386 for Toney??? How tf when Toney was just winning by over 100 punches with a 45-24 connect percentage!?
