This was Terry the guitar player. His voice was super rich in tone.
Not sure why they let Peter Cetera take lead vocals
I'm sure you will agree that Chicago was blessed with lots of good singers in their troup.
@@lipby Because Terry died. =(
Terry has the Ray Charles sound.
Terry Kath!
Chicago was unique and ahead of almost everyone else!
Terry was the soul of Chicago and he showed it whenever he sang.
I'm so glad my dad had me listening to this as a kid. As I get older the music becomes more and more powerful--it is just GENIUS writing, performance. JOY!! Chills every damn time I hear it.
Dude you on fire last 24 hours. Thank you for all your time you put into these. And you picking some great artists.👏 👏👍
Ck out *Color My World*
Terry Kath was often called the "White" Ray Charles. You can sure can hear that in Make Me Smile !! I'm 70 & I'm so Blessed to have grown up in those days when it comes to GREAT Music !!
You'd like Blood Sweat and Tears too. Songs like And When I Die, or Spinning Wheel.
That's what I suggested! LOL
Dont forget "You made me so very happy"
Go Down Gambling!
The very first blood sweat and tears, with al kooper, album called child is father to the man.the best.
"I Can't Quit Her" is another good BS & T song.
Trombonist Jimmy Pankow wrote "Make Me Smile" as part of a suite on their second album called Ballet For A Girl in Buchannon.
The edit was made by the record company unbeknownst to Pankow.
The Ballet is the best
Love me some James Pankow, even today. He has kept that body toned & those pants still tight, tight!!! Jane Lewis Gendreau
Other songs from early Chicago to check out are Poem 58, Colour my world, Happy cause I'm going home, Does anybody know what time it is, Free, I'm a Man, Sing a mean tune kid, Beginnings, Questions 67 and 68. Just for Starters.
All great songs! For his next song, I'd pick "Beginnings."
All their music was sublime...try the Russian coverband Leonid and friends.best cover ever of them...
Jason Benson great choices
This band had some of the best musicians ever. They were never boring and one of my favorite groups to date. Terry Kath is like no other...one of a kind and sang like he played guitar..with great intensity.
RIP Terry thank you for giving us your incredible talents you left us way too soon we missed out on what could have been. may God be with you and your family 🙏🎸🎸
Drummer Danny Seraphine was one of the founders along with Walter Parazinder (sax, wind) and Terry Kath (bass, guitar, vocals) in 1967.
Exited the band in 1990.
Wasn't Peter Cetera, the bass and high vocals part of the original band?
@@rjjohnson2402
Yes.
Robert Lamm has said: "the three horn players (James Pankow, Lee Loughnane and Walter Parazaider) were all music majors in college-two were at DePaul University and one was at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. I was at Roosevelt University, and Terry (Kath), Danny (Seraphine) and Peter (Cetera) were working in cover bands around the city. But it was really Walt and Terry who had the idea of doing a rock band with expanded instrumentation. They had played together in a band that backed up all the rock acts on Dick Clark’s Cavalcade of Stars show.
Somehow, I think that that one of them, or both of them, had come into a club where I was playing with a quartet on the North Side of Chicago. I think I was also in school at the time. One of them got a hold of me, and described the idea of [a band] doing pop songs, doing cover songs, and being able to do tunes with horns. All of that sounded great. I said “Wow, I would love to do that.” So I was invited to come and jam with them, and then I was invited to join the band. Then about a year later, we invited Peter Cetera to join the band as the bass player."
Seraphine, Parazaider and Kath's band, The Big Thing, seems to have morphed into Chicago with additions of the original members.
I remember when David Foster produced a Chicago album ... I was done.
My favorite classic Chicago song. A tribute to the late Terry Kath who tears it up not only on guitar but vocals as well. After Terry's passing, they became a shell of their former selves, IMHO. Terry was the one who pushed the envelope musically in the band.
Well, I am glad you played "Make Me Smile," but that was the short version. The actual song is the whole album side and incorporates various genres in music. The long version also contains the highly popular song, "Colour My World." It is worth at least a listen if only to complete your experience.
The radio edit was even shorter.
The "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" was and is one amazing stretch of music!
@@patrickmcclellan8726 I like the Live at Carnegie Hall version best.
@@porflepopnecker4376 exactly my thought. Radio edit to fit AM radio was like 2:30
Good choice !
Yo you have to react to “25 or 6 to 4”, it will blow your socks off! You’re getting me back into the music of my youth, it’s awesome!
First try Blood, Sweat and Tears which was pre Chicago slightly then if you really want to turn up the heat try Chase both Open Up Wide and Handbags and Gladrags. As a former trumpet player I could keep up with Chicago. Chase left me in the dark. Let me know if you want the links to Chase. FYI, when you listen to them, strap yourself into your chair!
I played Get It On by Chase in band!
@@pamnicklas5536 Same here. That was there most popular one and imo the easiest to play. You get into some of the others and I was lost. Going about double high C was not in my ability. Hope it was in yours.
@@Sixwheelin I thought so but could not remember. Ty much for the confirmation
I bought the first Chase album in 9th grade. What a treasure. Those trumpet voicings are special. By the time I was student teaching we used Get It On in Stage Band. I was lucky enough to see Chase in concert at Wichita State before the plane accident.
@@janicetrimmell6897 how fortunate for you. We used to play Get It On in high school band. My older brother saw them at SEMO. I unfortunately never got to see them but do own all 3 albums.
Hi,
Does anybody really know what time it is, Saturday in the park, Call on me, Wishing you, where here, Feeling stronger every day, Beginings,...the list goes on and on. Later 70s If you leave me now, Old Days, Another rainy day in New York City. Regards
Another Park, Another Sunday too
That song was amazing because of Terry's vocals. Beautiful.
Chicago was a jazz band with rock overtones. Lend an ear to the beautiful brevity of "Colour My World" - 3 minutes of pure Prom/Wedding heaven.
Thanx, now I know which way it went; just gotta find out who made the quote. The difference between Blood Sweat and Tears and Chicago. Chicago was a jazz band that played rock and Blood Sweat and Tears was a rock band that played jazz.
The moment @1:47 when you recognize the vocal power Terry Kath was capable of. This band was bringing a new sound to the music Industry and every member had serious musical talent.
I haven't listened closely to this song in quite a while. Really complex arrangements especially the horn parts. So well put together. As always Kath is excellent. Outstanding drumming, too.
As a guitarist, Kath's solo was extraordinary.
This Era of Chicago was the greatest band in history with zero equals
terry was something special. the way he sang, the way he played guitar. eric Clapton said that he was the best guitarist he ever heard. we'll never know his full potential. it still makes me mad the way he died. he was on top of the world and to lose his life while playing Russian roullette with his gun. what could have been ?
Jimi Hendrix admired Terry Kath also
He wasn't playing Russian Roullette, he thought the gun was empty, he wasn't stupid enough to be playing with a gun with one bullet in it.
alecfed Unfortunately, he was exactly that stupid. The magazine was empty, but there was a round in the chamber. His last words were “Don’t worry about it....look, the clip is not even in it”. What a senseless loss.
@@lcozzarelli if he hadn't dies that day, he would have soon.
Chicago was and has been a favorite since I was a child in the 70's. Anyone like me who's a fan of Chicago and haven't heard of this Russian & Ukrainian Chicago Tribute band named Leonid & Friends. Here's an example. These guys are good. I mean real good at covering Chicago. Example: Video name: "Beginnings - Leonid & Friends (Chicago cover)"
Enjoy.. :)
Iron Condor Leonid & Friends are **awesome** !
@@imweakfordeaky Yes indeed. I agree, I think they are awesome... :)
If you haven't already you can go to their channel, they have several Chicago songs they cover, as well as, a few other songs from other bands such as Earth, Wind & Fire and Blood, Sweat & Tears.
:)
Yeah. Terry Kath was a rare rock star.....to be such an extremely good guitar player and to also have that great singing voice. It was great fun to witness your reaction to this great song.
Best concert ever. Definitely a band worth seeing live
Yeah, you gotta see them live also, fun watching them...so sad about him, group changed after he died but they were still very good.
Yes, the live versión is smokin!
I was surprised by your surprise when it comes to Terry Kath's vocals. One of my favorite Chicago songs is Dialogue Part 1 and 2. It juxtaposes Kath's gruff vocals and guitar playing against Peter Cetera's high sweet sound and terrific bass playing. It's a musical masterpiece that carries a social message as relevant today as it was fifty years ago. Try it, you'll like it.
Totally again. Chicago VI was such a great album. Terry Katy is still my all time favorite singer and favorite guitar player ever!!!! This is also back when Peter Cetera's voice was so clear, raw, and pure pleasure, before the later years where it was over produced and overthought.
We all know how great Chicago was. They did it all, they also wrote their own songs. Each member was a master of their instrument and 3 lead vocalists.
Amen Jay ...they did "have it all goin on." Arguably the best American band ever .. well along with the Beach Boys. RIP Terry !
Never before or after has their ever been a band like Chicago!!
Chicago!! “Question 67 and 68” Great Peter Cetera voice the best of early Chicago..
Amazing music and definitely need to check out Blood Sweat and Tears
Amazing full sound, never disappoint.
That is the Terry Kath, a great lead singer among two more leads like Pete Cetera and Robert Lamm back in the day!
So many good memories when I hear this song. Thank you!
"Beginnings" is one wonderful song and has the heart of freedom in it. I recommend it heartily.
The GREAT TERRY KATH!!!!!
I’m so glad you’re covering Chicago, I mentioned it in one of my earlier posts & don’t know if you read it, but really glad to see this
Terry Kath could sing anything and what an underrated guitarist...
I took my mom as a gift to their concert in 1984 in Greensboro NC and I was 16. She was thrilled as was I! All instruments 9 band members!
When I was in high school in the 70's, the band program was my world - marching band, concert band, pep band. All my fellow band students LOVED Chicago.
The early Chicago Transit Authority sound they had 3 lead singer's in this Band. It was the best Back in the late 60's into the Mid 70's. I first heard this group at a dear friend's house. His brother was home from 'Nam. He had The first album in '67 on Reel to Reel. Man I miss those days...
Such a great song! There’s plenty of amazing Chicago songs from the mid - late 80’s, and early 90’s!
My favorite band growing up! Chicago was the first concert I ever went to! I saw them twice in concert! I also got 13 of their albums for Christmas one year. It was all I asked for!
Sixties Chicago. One of my favorite early Chicago songs from childhood. This song “always makes me smile!” 🤗🤗
This was the first concert my husband and I went too on our first date. 32 years ago!! At a famous out door venue in Massachusetts called Tangelwood.
Gosh I forgot how good this song is, I love old Chicago. Thanks Jay
Check out No Tell Lover and If You Leave Me Now by these guys. Just a few of their awesome library of songs.😎👍
I went to a Chicago concert two years ago with my 33 year old son and the brass band is out of this world. Chicago has been making albums I do believe since 1967
Do yourself a favor, Listen to the first albumn beginning to ending! You will be floored! Listen to Free Form Guitar. It blew Hendrixes' mind
It is fun seeing your reactions! Thanks
The grossly underrated Danny Serpaphine on drums...one of my favorites
"Saturday In The Park", "Does Anybody Know What Time It Is" are also great ones by Chicago.
Terry Kath was known as "The White Ray Charles". Listen to the song again and think Ray Charles's voice and you'll see what I mean!
I grew up in Buckhannon, WV and I just recently learned the full name of this song and that it was written for a girl who was attending WV Wesleyan College. Makes me like it even more.
Cee Lo Green live at Daryl's house will be one of your favorite videos (guaranteed). Daryl Hall is the half duo of Hall and Oates who sold millions of records and are the all time top duo in music history. This video is a must ..... thumbs up people.
You summed it up perfectly….Innovative with tons of skill and talent.
I haven't heard this in 25-30 years.... thank you for this reaction!!!!!!!!!!!
just a powerful, special song of theirs !
Jazz, blues, classical and rock-n-roll with the best vocals for their music best composers and musicians. Nothing tops Chicago
Saw them in concert in the 80's. They put on such a show!
Chicago does have some great tunes and yes, a multitude of instruments.
This is part of the collection from The Ballet for a Girl in Buchanan. The best without a doubt. Now this is music
Rock Band with a horn section. Jimi Hendrix said Terry Kath was the best guitar he's heard and Danny Seraphine is a legendary drummer. Many great musicians in this group.
Recently rediscovered Chicago, now I can't stop listening to them.
Early Chicago was as good as it gets. So much incredible talent!
Went to a concert last couple of years. One of the best concerts ever.
Jimi Hendrix (my favorite all time guitarist) was a huge Terry Kath fan. That says it all right there.
Danny Seraphine is the sensational drummer. Please react to "I'm A Man" from the live performance at Tanglewood 1970. A total drum and percussion fest.
This is my fave Chicago song .. Terry played like Jimi and sang like James brown. This song rocks!!!!the horns kick assss
I loved Chicago so upbeat 😁love the band and the vocals
He was an awesome vocalist
Oh, man! I love this song! The transitions are awesome. The next logical Chicago song to react to after this one is "I'm a Man," which is funky AF! You'll love it!!!
Jimi Hendrix was asked in an interview in 1971 how it felt to be considered the best guitarist. Mr Hendrix replied: you should be asking that cat in Chicago (referring to Terry Kath). Much of Chicago's early works were split between Kath, Lamm and Cetera singing. Kath's voice, kinda low and gritty, was often referred to as "the white Ray Charles". The drummer is Danny Serraphine, very underrated talent. They were the first band that incorporated brass and woodwinds into frontline not just background. You like horns? Listen to Questions 67 & 68, written in part by Kath but primarily the Trombone player James Pankow, whom incorporated 3 tempo changes into the music. Yes, they wrote their own music and lyrics.
If you like this sound then please listen to "Blood Sweat and Tears" "Spinning Wheel" or one of there other few mega hits.
The thing I like about the older music is that it is so eclectic and unique. If you start dancing without trying, it is a good song!
I'm A Man studio version is still my favorite Chicago tune. Try it. You'll like it!
OMG Jay!! That was so great I'm going to go watch the Tanglewoods concert now. You can never go wrong with Chicago, especially the earlier stuff from the 70s.
Thank you for this one.
Danny Serafin is the drummer. One of the most underrated drummers in music...Terry Kath and Danny Serafin were school mates and best friends since 9th grade....
Blood, Sweat and Tears.....and GO!
Terry Kath was phenomenal as a guitarist and a vocalist.
FANTASTIC MUSCIANS. They could DO IT ALL. That's music at its greatest. Bring back the early 80s. My era. Great song by Chicago: Color My World. Also, the 70's great music; Eagles, Earth, Wind and Fire, The Commodores, the O'Jays. Fleetwood Mac. Blood, Sweat and Tears!! OMG, the list goes on and on. Loving it. Thank you. God Bless and stay safe. 🙏🙏🙏
Great song from a great group.
Any Chicago thru 1978 you are golden, especially the first 5 albums.
Earth wind n fire ‘“keep your head to the sky”Awesome song .❤️🎶 you will love there voices
Definitely one of my favorite old school bands ! They had one of the best horn sections going. When i was 15 i saw them in concert just before Terry Kath died, they were great...♡
The horn line is Jimmy Pankow, Walt Parazaider and Lee Loughnane. Had a poster of Jimmy on my wall.
My youngest son who us now 20 years old approached me last year and said we have to celebrate the 4th of July in a park because it would them be" Saturday in the park, I think it was the 4th of Juky". I'm happy for him that he discovered the great sounds if Chicago at his age. Great sone and reaction. Thanks.
A mix of jazz and funk! Love it!!
I saw Chicago in concert and they are just as good live as recorded.
Buddy Rich gave the Chicago drummer high praise.
Love this song! It's the Chicago sound, but back back when they had more varied influences in their music. 👍
My favorite song by Chicago
Tower of Power has the best horn section since 1968 and still knocking it out of the park .
up out of the chair Jayvee - old time rocker - Hank Ballad doing Finger Poppin time. Also Beach Boys (California Girls), Alive and Kicking (Tighter Tighter) Earth Wind and Fire (After the love is gone) and The Rascals doing I've been lonely too long.
Terry Kath was a soulful white brother! Hell of a guitarist and singer, RIP. The horn section consisted of trumpet, sax, and trombone player. Chicago is the white Earth, Wind and Fire, another excellent band of the 70's than incorporated horns, rock, and funk into their sound. Both are excellent groups.
Early great stuff is "Beginnings", "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" "Colour My World" "Call on Me". They also produced a good amount of great album tracks. Song For the Evergreens and Byblios (Demo Version)
Chicago II is my favorite album of all time. All the songs are phenomenal
