I'm 72. Teenage years had a lot of Chicago in them. I was too inexperienced them to appreciate the talent of the guitarist; Upon hearing him from this end of my life I can;t understand why he was not held in better regard for his talent
Today is Jan 24, 2024. Yesterday sadly marked 46 years since Terry Kath died. The band was not the same after that. This timeless 1970 classic now brings tears to my eyes. It was their first big hit reaching the top 10. The city of Chicago was very blessed to have this band no matter how much mayor Daly despised them.
@@fayewittwer5208They were probably written-off as scumbag hippies at the time. Anything "anti-establishment" (don't know how Chicago fits into that category) was frowned-upon. It shows how ignorant people were in those days (and still are today, for that matter).
I've never considered them to be from Chicago for two reasons: they relocated to California and the melodies and horns are so warm and brilliant, we always took them to the beach.
They really weren't the same without Terry. Peter helped them tread water for a while and then he left and I really don't think there is much left of the original band.
I love watching Terry Kath play. He isn't simply playing his guitar or trotting out well worn exercise patterns, he BECOMES the guitar. He IS the guitar. His mind absolutely disappears into the music and the guitar simply becomes an extension of what is going on in his head at the time. His hands just do what he is playing in his head as to how it ought to go or sound right here and he's already a dozen steps ahead of you before it registers in your brain what just happened, what he just pulled off with the ease of a flame thrower toasting a marshmallow. The really elite musicians don't seem to care if they walk on stage wearing whatever they put on that morning to measure up to some critical standard of a "professional." They don't really even seem to care if anyone is watching them, or try to show off this or that move or repetitiously exhaust exercise scales with B-S antics to impress the fans who just jump on musical band wagons as a method of including themselves in whatever is popular today. Terry just puts his head down and becomes the music. When experienced guitar players, hear what TK is doing with his instrument, and while listening, trying to imagine, trying to figure out, or simply attempting to follow what is emanating out of him, we just put our guitars away, sit down, watch intently, and try to soak up as much of the energy he is throwing off to absorb the feeling with him. His aura just seems to blast out of his guitar and cover you with an incredible blanket of supernatural oneness with the music. He deconstructs and reconstructs his guitar in patterns and ways that are alien to mere mortals and shares his pure natural genius without quarter. To those who understand, receive, contemplate, become jealous of, admire, and stand in awe of Terry Kath, he is in a class all by himself. If music is what feelings sound like, Terry Kath IS music.
When they toured Europe a member of a famous British band made a disparaging remark about the band. His response to me was classic. "British guitar players ain't got no soul". Terry had "soul".
50 years later, I still can’t believe the courage behind Kath’s vocals… he was all in / make or break, and he didn’t hesitate… probably the best vocal performance in rock, because he was right on the edge, and didn’t back down…

I saw the original band three times too. Twice at the Boston Garden. One of those so lucky to be in the fifth row on the floor after meeting a woman and her family at Hampton Beach, NH and told her I loved Chicago and was going to get tickets for their upcoming concert at the Garden and she said she knew someone at the Garden and could get me tickets right up close to the stage. I didn’t believe her but gave her my phone number. Sure enough she came through. Unbelievable to be that close to the stage. Those two concerts were 1973 and 1974. I have always loved how Kath was in tune with every musician on stage and could improvise then and there, like he does with the drummer in the beginning of that break in the middle.
Because of my age, I was born in 71, I was first familiar with their 80s stuff. As I got older, I went backwards to their early stuff. Love it! R.i.p. Terry
I’m 50 years old and I’m just discovering this Rock God. I always thought Chicago was some easy listening crap that my parents listened to in the 70’s 😂
I'm 46, and grew up listening to Chicago quite a lot. It's really only the last few years I've really come to fully appreciate everything they bring. In particular Terry Kath and his guitar playing and singing. It's mind blowing, and I only wish I could have developed my baritone voice to anything approaching his ability. Just astounding.
He really was Terrific! As a guitarist it would have been tough to be heard thru that great horn section..Yet he sure did..Hendrix even loved Terrys playing....Really liked his voice and playing.. God Bless Him. As well.as the other boyz in the band..!
Great band and Terry Kath and Peter Cetera were such good and talented singers. Now a little over half a Century later they are still good to hear. Timeless really.
I saw them live at the Yale Bowl in 1970 while home on leave. What a show they sounded even better than the records!!!! What an amazing live show and amazing band.
I agree. Also, the Boston Bruins died when Bobby Orr retired, the Los Angeles Dodgers ended when Don Drysdale retired, boxing ended when Ali retired, the NFL no longer exists since Satin made Marcus Allen retire, no film is worth a free large popcorn to sit a moment through since Paul Newman died, and if there is one good reason that any television in America is on after 11pm since Carson gave up his hosting desk I haven't heard it. And speaking of the New York Yankees and Boston Celtics, where have you gone, Jeremy McGrath? I agree with you, Foster Covers. The Answer: Stay home alone, close it down, and jerk it.
The live version was (and still is to this day!) so much better than the album version. It is such a shame the rest of “Ballet For A Girl In Buchanan” was cut off in this video, “Colour My World” is the next part.
My God, these guys were great. There was a club band out of the mid west in the 70s, Common People, that did a lot of Chicago very well. The guitars and bass would play horns in one hand and fret the guitars with the other. Unforgettable.
Thank you for sharing this. I was only 10 when they recorded this. I didn't fully appreciate Terry until after he was gone. To his credit, Terry sang with such soul, my friends and I all thought he was black. So many treasures from those early days and this one has to be on my 10 top list of songs to have on a deserted island. I hope Terry gets to look down here every once in a while and see how much he is loved. All good wishes.
I saw Chicago 3 days before Terry died. I always see him in the Minnesota North Stars jersey he wore on stage...in Toronto of all places. When I heard the news I couldn't believe it. I still can't.

Not about age my brother, its About what it brings out of One from the inner core of feeling..This makes one blend into the everyday world ,WITH LOVE IN ONES HEART ITS ALL GOOD.. LOVE ,DEVOTION, AND SURRENDER.PEACE.
There's nothing like Terry's voice.
The best of the best.
He was such a talented singer, needless to say, a wonderful guitarist.
Always will love you Terry
A MONSTER BAND...INSPIRED ME 50 YEARS AGO TO FLEE MY COUNTRY AND START MY ROCK ADVENTURE.....NO REGRETS !!!!
I have always loved how Kath was in tune with every musician on stage and could improvise then and there, like he does with the drummer in the beginning of that break in the middle.
Man, the more I study Gary Kath’s playing the more intimidated I become. He was absolutely fearless. He really was the greatest.
Thanks dad for introducing me to Chicago
Terry absolutely attacks that guitar and his intense vocals….simple magnificent
They really rocked when Kath was with them.
Zepfan59 Hasn't been the same since IMO.....
So true!
They were a lot younger, too. That helped.
After Kath passed , Cetera took lead and turned them into a ballad band .
They sure did.Love their sound!! To top it off, this music is from CHICAGOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best love songs ever.
Two Words: GREAT BAND!!! Still listening and enjoying in 2020.
2021!
4/14/21 Ditto.
@@thegarbagegladiators4735 Yoo, Hoo!!
Check out Leonid & Friends from Russia.spot on.
@@charlesbyron9709 Indeed. They are a great tribute band!
I love Terry's voice!
Terry Kath maybe one of the most underrated guitar players of all time. He is truly missed. rip terry
Because of my age, I was born in 71, I was first familiar with their 80s stuff. As I got older, I went backwards to their early stuff. Love it! R.i.p. Terry
It's like a whole other world & so much better than the 80s stuff!:))
So true !!! CTA was one of their best!!!!
Same here!
Better before 80s in my book. Got to bubble gum pop sounding for me....
There early stuff with Terry Kath was the best! Then David Foster made them into an incarnation of David Foster. Yuck…
The Best Of The Best . . Studio Musicians . . .
Terry Kath was a beast on guitar.
A BEAST!!!!!!
I’m 50 years old and I’m just discovering this Rock God.
I always thought Chicago was some easy listening crap that my parents listened to in the 70’s 😂
@@erosionhead420 No way......they had some rocking music!
@@erosionhead420 And you're 50?
I'm 46, and grew up listening to Chicago quite a lot. It's really only the last few years I've really come to fully appreciate everything they bring. In particular Terry Kath and his guitar playing and singing. It's mind blowing, and I only wish I could have developed my baritone voice to anything approaching his ability. Just astounding.
NO other band has had the brass as talented as Chicago!!
He was the heart and soul of Chicago .
I never get enough of their first four albums. Unbelievable. Anything more groundbreaking?
He really was Terrific! As a guitarist it would have been tough to be heard thru that great horn section..Yet he sure did..Hendrix even loved Terrys playing....Really liked his voice and playing.. God Bless Him. As well.as the other boyz in the band..!
Hendrix loved him said to them you have a guitarist better than me nows thats a compliment
You memtion the top 10 guitarists of all time why is he not on that list ?
Terry Kath should always be mentioned among Rocks greatest guitar players.
His voice is often overlooked, but he always reminded me of Ray Charles!
God damn I miss this gift to humanity. Just one in forever!
This song has it all! even the title. Horns guitar drums keys and oh so much soul.
Love that deep, soulful, gifted voice. Damn, that guitar work, wow
Great band and Terry Kath and Peter Cetera were such good and talented singers. Now a little over half a Century later they are still good to hear. Timeless really.
100% agree Jorge Mario Rodas!!
Terry Kath incredible vocals. What an amazing moment in history watching them perform. Terry RIP❤
This song just rocked my world in 1972, Terry sang it so well.
Did it "Colour Your World"?
Terry's voice is probably my favorite all time !
I saw them live at the Yale Bowl in 1970 while home on leave. What a show they sounded even better than the records!!!! What an amazing live show and amazing band.
Thanks for sharing this video..always wanted to see them live in the 70s..this is the closest I'll ever get. ❤
Kath was amazing...wow...music back then, live, stellar! Early Chicago killed it!
Supergroup indeed!!!!
Love the deep fullness in his voice. Love Chicago!! Blessed to have seen them in 1985-86
What a found gem!!
Very beautiful music from Chicago, proud fan for over 50 years, Master Musicians
They put Jazz ,Classical,Rock ect all at once ,Terry was amazing.
Holy smoke!!!!! Fresh as the first time I heard it back in the seventies!!!
Terry's soulful voice would make me tingle and I was only 7-8 years old when this song came out.
The band to me pretty much ended the day he died. He was the heart n soul of Chicago. All the games we used to play......
Peter Cetera took over and his briches got too big for his head. They partied like rock stars in Colorado! Well they were!
I was in the 9th grade. I remember this so well. I love hearing it.
Terry passed on my Grandma Dorothy's 78th birthday, January 23rd, 1978. Rip rocker🎸🎸🎸🎸
Wow, I never heard that version before. Thank you for sharing. I always thought Chicago deserved more appreciation for their music and their talent.
The live version was (and still is to this day!) so much better than the album version. It is such a shame the rest of “Ballet For A Girl In Buchanan” was cut off in this video, “Colour My World” is the next part.
Great Terry Kath, amazing !!!❤
Terry Kath the total Monster of Rock package. The world misses you
Sometimes I hate the web! This not one them.. thank you UA-cam for the music of my youth!!! ❤❤❤❤
My God, these guys were great. There was a club band out of the mid west in the 70s, Common People, that did a lot of Chicago very well. The guitars and bass would play horns in one hand and fret the guitars with the other. Unforgettable.
Terry Kath voice is out of this world
Thank you for sharing this.
We were truly blessed with the BEST rock back in the day . !
TOTALLY AGREE. WE HAD IT MADE MUSICLY, AND I KNEW IT!!! M O'B
I saw Chicago 3 days before Terry died. I always see him in the Minnesota North Stars jersey he wore on stage...in Toronto of all places. When I heard the news I couldn't believe it. I still can't.
This made me smile!
