- The Black Hole 1979
Music by Jhon Barry
For the last twenty years, the Cygnus was never heard from again and found its way to a black hole where she was finally discovered by the U.S.S. Palomino.
It turns out in the last twenty years, Reinhardt had modified his ship with anti-gravity forces to keep the Cygnus at bay. He planned to fly her through the black hole but suffered sever damage when the Palomino and asteroids collided with her. She was torn apart as she went through the black hole.
USS Cygnus is one of the most beautiful spaceships ever. I love how it looks industrial and dark but still elegant. Perfect villain ship.
Adalwolf Yes, elegant like Cygnus the Swan, which is also known as the Northern Cross. When Cygnus the Swan is positioned as the Northern Cross, it almost looks like he is flying downwards. The main star of Cygnus known as Deneb is located close to his tail but a little more closer to his feet. What I would really like to see is the theme music from "The Black Hole" and Cygnus the swan flying through the starry night sky. Now that would make Disney green with envy.
True that
Definitely hits a gothic vibe
One of the finest film themes ever written.
The music is 70% of why you should watch the film.
Johnathon Vought I understand you.
That is so true !!!
The Score is great, but that sure does not give credit to the all star cast..special effects, and plot.
That nation theme song is beautiful and so grandiose and representative of that eta of filmmaking.. I can't believe it's been 41 years.
The Cygnus is definitely the most Gothic / steam punk looking spaceship ever in cinema.
Absolutely. I first saw this movie as a lad back in the 70s, and that model still impresses me today. The level of inspiration and craft that went into making that is incredible. The only fictional spaceship that has come close, for me, was the Cylon "Resurrection Ship" from the re-made Battlestar Galactica TV series (2003-2009). That thing was like an interstellar cathedral, complete with flying buttresses.
I hear that there's a remake of The Black Hole coming, here's hoping they keep the good parts from the original....
More so than The Event Horizon? Not IMO
Nope. You ever see Event Horizon or Pandorum?
I loved this movie as a kid. I STILL love this movie.
One of the most underrated movies ever, music and story are GREAT!
As creepy as the USS Cygnus was, it still was a beautiful ship.
I totally agree....I love the design and the first fly by where " It lit up like a tree on Christmas morning" was awesome. So few people understand a classic when C.G.I. rules but it is one of the best. With Disney remaking everything I wish they would do a decent job on this movie. Still I doubt they can do any justice. One of the most underrated movies of all time!
When Disney was prepared to take risk, do something different and something non-Disney. The Black Hole challenged the audience with haunting, philosophical themes.
Especially when they were attempting to mimic “The Star Wars” but with a more Star Trek-y vibe
I just love this theme so dark and menacing yet beautiful.
What an Awesome collection from the movie, along with this theme. Remember watching this in the 70s, and thought, it was creepy, dark, and mysterious...I never wanted the film to end. Idk why some nowadays dislike this film. An All Star Cast, brilliant script, Awesome special effects, and Fantastic Score. On a side note..inside joke with ppl who have seen the film, if I am on a date or a place where things are getting weird, from one person toward me, I say.."Protect Me from Maxmilian" lol
One of the last movies my Grandfather took me too as a kid. I love this movie and it's super dark and creepy sound track!
man bad ass movie here! They do not make them like this anymore. Then again actors went to acting school unlike todays buch!!!
Chris Moss your a fan like me, welcome to the Cygnus
Yea , like Piper Perabo , who lied her way into Movies !!! Or so I hear !!!
One of the best dark sci-fi film ever and the mysterious 'Cygnus' is my all time favorite spaceship !
Of all the spaceships' designs, the U.S.S. Cygnus remains my favorite , and always will be. It's gothically beautiful!!! I wish I had a full-scale model!! By the way, you did a really neat job with the opening theme and the video!! Thanks for posting this!!
stanleyban Does it mean when the Cygnus is pulled down into the Black Hole it is singing a swan song? Just referring to the constellation of Cygnus the Swan.
stanleyban Did you know how Disney came up with the name of Cygnus in The Black Hole? As you may like to know, the Cygnus is named for the constellation in the late summer sky about late August and early September known as Cygnus the Swan, also known as the Northern Cross. From your standpoint as a stargazer, Cygnus as the swan looks like he is flying downwards even though the stars are poised upwards in the shape of a cross. As for the stars that make up Cygnus as the swan, the brightest known as Deneb is located at his head while a little known star cluster is located at his feet. According to Greek mythology, Cygnus was known to be Orpheus, the son of the sun god Apollo and his wife Calliope. When his bride Eurydice was bitten by a venomous serpent and died, Orpheus went to see his father to try to get his bride back but Apollo was powerless to do this. Then Orpheus who had a musical instrument known as a lyre was told to meet the god of the underworld known as Pluto. Orpheus played a lovely tune on his lyre and iron tears went down Pluto's cheeks. Pluto then told Orpheus that he meet his bride at a midway point in his journey. But he told Orpheus he should not look at his bride until he got to the midway point. Just before he got to the midway point, Orpheus had doubts about Pluto's orders and looked around. There was Orpheus' bride dressed in shiny clothing more beautiful than ever. But when Orpheus started to reach out, his bride vanished in a mist and she was gone forever. Mad with grief, Orpheus unwittingly stumbled into a group of men belonging to a villain named Bacchus and he was killed. At his death, his father Apollo asked the king of the gods Jupiter to place his son's lyre among the stars. Then Orpheus was transformed into a swan. As of today in the modern era, the swan is known as the constellation Cygnus and Lyra the lyre is nearby. Also next to the constellation Cygnus is the constellation of Virgo the Virgin. According to Greek mythology, Orpheus' beloved bride Eurydice was renamed Virgo by Jupiter, and as of this day the constellation Virgo is located near Cygnus and near Lyra. Virgo is also part of the zodiac which includes the constellations of Capricorn, Aquarius, Scorpio, Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius, Libra and Pisces.
John Barry is known for his 007 music... This was Disney's answer to SW, and they invented the ACES camera system at Disney Studios just for this film. It is what it is-- and it has some great moments. Kudos to Peter and Harrison Ellenshaw for their visionary art and matte paintings for this film. I remember seeing Sentry robots stored in an old (Pete's Dragon) western building on the Disney studios backlot about 1980.
Finally, a little "feel good" music on UA-cam.
a trip down memory lane :)
Anybody who hasn't seen this movie already will certainly want to see it now, after hearing and seeing the great music score and visuals. This should have been the trailer for The Black Hole!
Had this soundtrack album on vinyl! Lol! I was like 8 when this came out. Max drilling the guy from Psycho... scarred me for life. Lol!
great sifi comfort movie and nice soundtrack. cygnus rocks
For a Disney movie back in 1979 a shit load of people died.
Disney movies often have a high body count, its just subtle or tied in that it takes a second to register
To think a few swear words and the death of Durant is what netted this movie being the first time Disney would ever get a PG rating
A thought provoking yet also family friendly film.
Hearing this in the theater was awesome!!!
Man, I saw this film when I was 5? I loved it! Especially Dr Reinhardt!
morfeas333 There is a popular philosophy that says "Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing." In essence, Dr. Reinhardt was friendly and good-natured at first, but then became the bad guy when his secret was discovered by none other than a battered robot.
@@scoobycarr5558 "A wolf remains a wolf, even if it has not eaten your sheep." HOLLAND: "Correct, Vincent."
@@georgewerner6404 I think out of all the characters in The Black Hole I think Vincent is the most eccentric.
@Scifier939 Very well done!
Love this movie especially seeing it in the cinema when it premiered.
Special effects were actually pretty darn impressive for 1979 overall
LOVE IT!!! THE 1RST TIME THAT I WATCH THIS MOVIE Y ALREADY WAS IN LOVE WITH CIENCE FICTION AND THE MUSIC...AAAA UNIQUE!!!! :3 GIVE ME CHILLS AND WONDERFUL MEMORIES OF MY CHILDHOOD!!!
I love the song.
well put together!
Nice fan video.
Practical effects and James Bondish music, this is my favorite Disney scifi film. Better than their Star Wars films.
Yes, that was by Disney. It's hard to say where they were going with it, they tried to make it kid friendly with the cutey robots but deep down it's a pretty dark and gritty film. I loved it as a child and now while it might seem corny in parts I love it for the brilliance of it's time. A true classic.
I think this was a test to see how much they could push their family-friendly image without really losing people. Over the next couple of years, they tried even harder with movies like “Night Crossing,” “Something Wicked This Way Comes” and “Tron.”
Boggles the mind but why The Black Hole is not on blu-ray. Jiminy!!! Saw that film in 1981 in early days if cable in Queens NY. Nostalgia!!!!
I never got the fascination with this movie, but I will say it is the most uniquely PG-creepy sci-fi movie.
John Barry wizard
The theme music does it for me on The Black Hole. Also, for a number of reasons this seems to connect with the movie Saturn 3. The darkness of the visions of future space exploration seems to resonate in both.
This was a real good movie i was born in 1987 my dad let me watch this movie when i was a kid I became fascinated with space and time black holes etc.... I think this movie should be re made not to say its anything wrong with this one but just to re do it know what i mean
I heard the effect for the Black hole was special blend of paint in a tank filmed with a propeller at the bottom illusion.
Yes on, the DVD they talk about this, the bright lights eventually weakened the tank and it broke. dumping paint and water all over the floor quite a mess. There were also over 100 matte shots for this movie.
Space Probe One: U.S.S. Cygnus. flying Gothic cathedral, the mission begins where everything ends. Never Forget The Cygnus.
This is just an extended version of the opening credits of the movie (self-created as it seems: listen to the cheap cut in 1:14; compare ua-cam.com/video/IJaypC51Dds/v-deo.html). But like most of the others here, I loved this movie and I still do (saw it first time when I was 10). The USS Cygnus had that impressive giant look similar to the StarWars Star Destroyers, but, as often mentioned here, its structure was different - gothic/steampunky/creepy, whatever. Amazingly designed! A haunted stealhouse in space, a flying Eiffel Tower or as one said here, a flying gothic cathedral. The actually absurd combination between space science fiction, horror elements, silly cartoon-like robots, philosophical implications and surrealistic dream sequences worked perfectly.

I use to have a view finder back in the late 70s and It had discs with pictures from The Black Hole film, I lost them both sadly, can you still get view finders with the film discs?
Why were special effects better in the late 70s/early 80s than throughout all of the late 80s and early 90s? I'll meditate on that after I drink a beer.
How could a ship as big as the cygnus not have defensive Shields so it would not have been damaged by the meteor strikes it was a masterpiece
Probably because the energy used for the shields was used for the Cygnus' Main engine at the moment
I don't remember much about the movie at that time i was more into Star Wars and Buck Rogers...
I was into Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica back then. I also liked the Black Hole.
Yup, this is Disney.
I saw this when I was 8, and the memory is with me still.
It's a good memory as well. Just so you know.
A very dark movie. Even with the kid friendly robots.
The Maximilian robot. And that ending...
Wow. Hopefully the 'remake' (yes, they are remaking this...) is worthy. With modern CGI I'm sure they will ruin it's character. Which is very unfortunate.
A ship and story as dark as this needs made. Not generated.
Pure genius.
my favorite sci fi movie....the robots steal the show !!!
Can someone please tell me what other films/tv shows this music has been in? I know I recognise it but I haven't seen this film so I must have heard it on something else
Frances Madgwick This is John Barry composing so it's very familiar when compared to many James Bond themes
So I probably could have heard it anywhere then? Okay well thanks anyway :)
+Frances Madgwick As Timothy said, it's John Barry and several of his scores hit some very similar themes musically. I think he also did Somewhere in Time (Christopher Reeve) and Dances with Wolves (Kevin Costner). Maybe Moonraker (James Bond) had some similar/spacey/military tones. As a fan of all of these soundtracks, I know pieces of this score was in some of those. In some cases almost identical. This particular one I've not heard anywhere else. But other songs on this soundtrack I have.
A hole in the membranes separating dimensions? I'm thinkin' they are energy conduits between dimensions, letting source energy from higher frequencies breathe back some of the energy through these "black holes" back into higher dimensions. No big deal...
anyone knows how many crow are in uss Cygnus in the film the black hole? I know 2 bob & the captian was laft so what about the rast of the crow?
XD I am here cuz of that!
Believe it or not, yes.
How beautiful it is !!
The USS Cygnus, the red october vessel of space
Has anybody seen a schematic of the ship that's actually in English that shows where everything is like the garden section in the reactor room and where all the containers are and what not because if anybody has I would love to see them. I want to get a much better look at the inside of the ship know where everything is so I would much appreciate an English schematic thanks. if you find one please let me know immediately and I will try to get back with you as soon as I can because I don't always have internet access so thanks again
It reminds me of the event horizon! Both are creepy but I have to say, event horizon is just pure dread
star size comparison
It deals with concept of Heaven and He'll which I think are universal And with all this Technology the human condition is still misterious.
This is Disney?
Reboot!
Ok, I see, they combined the trashcan and 3PO into one irritating robot, and made some SW effects, and these are the weak points of this movie, if they would simply ignore SW at all, this would be SF at its highest. Still waaay better than Star Wars
This movie was planned years before SW....They did not copy anything.
The robots in the Black Hole were pretty unique for this time. I do like Star Wars and the robots they had in it but the one thing they didn't have was floating robots. BTW Vincent the robot was voiced by Roddy McDowell. I just thought that maybe you wanted to know that. Maximilian was really fearsome too. The double laser guns are unique too. Even Starlord has guns like that in the Guardians of the Galaxy.
