Look at Flairs demeanor and body language. He's walking that aisle like he's about to fight in a cage. No hot dogging, no showboating. He was all business, and he was ready to throw down. His walk to the ring at the Rumble was the same, like he was in for a night of it. Flair made small adjustments to suit the circumstances, and because he was such a natural he made it look easy.
If you have any interest in Wrestling outside of what Vince spoonfed us, Flair is on Mount Rushmore.

Was wondering if Garvin's theme was a dub i.e. WWE Network, and turns out yes and by the NWA or their publishing company themselves. It is a great tune though. For those who don't know, it's called “Boys Toys”.

Was Randy Savage WWF's version of Ric Flair back in the day? Remember Savage used to have the same type of glittery robes and epic royal entrance music.
No. Savage was always nuts, paranoid and crazy. Flair and Savage couldn’t have been more opposite each other. That’s part of the reason they worked well together because opposites attract. The WWF’s answer to Flair before he showed up would have been The million dollar man Ted Dibiase. He was rich, flamboyant, flew in jets, rubbed shoulders with the elite, bought his own title, etc.

I never knew Garvin held the "Big Gold Belt"
Yeah. Unfortunately while he was the perfect guy to use as an interim champ (and that was the sole reason he got the belt: to lose it back and give some juice to the Starrcade main event since they didn’t have any hot and/or new programs to plug Flair into for the show - remember that they’d already had him face Dusty, Dusty again, and Nikita at the last 3 starrcades. Couldn’t run those matches again.), it was also what hurt the credibility of his reign.
Garvin was a legit contender, but at the same time seen as just below the A List guys. It’s not a great analogy since the WWF had a different philosophy on faces vs heels as champs, and the general lack of blood feud heat in their feuds, but best I could put it is it would be like putting the belt on Tito Santana or Brutus the Barber Beefcake for a couple months. Good for a shock and sets up an obvious rematch, but just doesn’t quite have that credibility.
Of course, JCP chose Garvin because he had fantastic matches every time out with Ric, and he was credible enough. But they also chose him because they didn’t want to have one of their more top faces (e.g., Ricky Morton or Barry Windham) look like a chump by jobbing the belt back so quickly. Garvin was at the tail end of his career and had hit his peak already. They didn’t have anything greater they were saving him for.
For the same reason, Garvin made very few defenses for the reason that the two options based on the tried and true booking philosophy of the era were either to have him cleanly defeat top heels they had other plans for, or piss off fans with DQ and count out finishes.

UWF was obtained on 4/9/87. How were they supposed to get over the NWA roster in that short period of time? It was the equivalent of minor leaguers moving into the majors. In 10 short months, Sting got the next major push after Ronnie Garvin. What more could the UWF ask for? The excuse you’re searching for is well documented. Too much excess spending i.e. the private jet + holding Starrcade 87 outside their footprint + Vince threatening cable companies. Despite Flair’s very best promos for it in his entire career, it was a financial disaster. If the Crocketts had held Starrcade 87 in the Carolinas, they would have lasted much longer. They figured this out with Clash of the Champions, but the financial damage was done by then. If anything, the Road Warriors in Chicago should have elevated sales, but it didn't matter. The outcome of their match was completely irrelevant.

It was a generic production theme used to dub out the original music used during the live broadcast, which was "Far From Over". This would later become Eddie Gilbert's theme too.

Great match but terrible decision by Crockett to move Starrcade location from the south to Chicago..I know the fans in Chicago that night where cheering for Flair even thoiugh he was the heel.

The NWA wanted a wrestler to be a transitional champion. They wanted somebody to beat Flair so he could win the world title back at Starrcade. Several wrestlers such as Barry Windham did not want to be a transitional champion for Flair. Ronnie Garvin was in his forties at the time and felt that this was going to be his only chance to be a world champion so he did the honors for Flair.

Garvin was a pretty good worker and Flair truly loved working with him, but the guy had no personality and the fans were never in love with him both as a character and as a wrestler. Perfect midcard guy, but not a main-event player. At the time, Hogan was the hero of the wrestling world and the definition of a larger than life character, in comparison to him Garvin looked like a chump having no business being there in the first place. It looked extremely weak compared to what the WWF was doing at the time, particularly when Garvin barely did any appearances to plug the event in the first place. Bad call by the promotion, and it didn't do any good to their finances.

Valid...but who else were they gonna run out there? Duttay was in the Luger feud. Magnum T.A. was done. Nikita and Ric had wrestled the year before and Flair had wrestled Duttay back to back in 84 and 85. Sting was too green. Who else? Maybe Barry Windham...but let's be honest, the fans in Chicago would've reacted the same way to a Flair/Windham title match.

Ronnie Garvin was the only one willing. No one wanted to be a lame duck champ or whatever. I do wish Barry would've done it, but him joining the Horsemen 5 months later would make no sense.
@@ericjackson7632 Honestly I think the Windham heel turn would have made perfect sense. do you remember when he turned against Luger, how JJ could be heard at ringside saying 'I told you , I told you he wouldn't be there for you'. in retrospect this would have made perfect sense that he was in contact with Windham after the title loss and was letting him know that he was indeed Horseman caliber. I always thought in hindsight they should have switched the 2 matches having Windham win the title for 2 months and face Flair and have Garvin challenge Dr. Death for the UWF title at Starrcade.

To me Ric flair was better then Dusty Rhodes. Rhodes came to WWE before Flair in the early 1990s and did not win the WWE belt. Ric Flair came to WWE in late 1991 and by royal Rumble 1992 he was WWE champ.
When Charlotte flair came to WWE. She became popular so quick winning titles. And look at Cody he just won the WWE belt after all this time what that tells you.

This is an official VHS tape. Flair’s entrance music remained unchanged from the PPV. Garvin’s entrance music was changed.
