Listening to that reaction from the Chicago crowd, you really see a shift in how the Midnight Express are perceived by the fans. They went from being absolutely hated (Condrey/Eaton version) to being loved (Lane/Eaton). They weren’t the mean evil bastards they were a year before or earlier in the year when Cornette burned Ronnie Garvin. They were just confident dudes who believed they were the best tag team on the planet and to quote RVD, the whole f’n show and they will put on a show to let you know why.
Also this entrance shows what is wrong with wrestling today. When the Midnights walk out, they look and act like stars. When a lot of guys walk out today, very few of them have any presence or it factor.

Crowds like Chicago, New York and Philly for example have always had fans that are more smart to the business than others....They will cheer you if you're good regardless if you're heel or face. It wasn't just a midnight express thing. Chicago always cheered Flair and the Horsemen back then too. I agree with about the entrances though 100%.

I grew up in the ere where it what cool to put the road warriors as the number #1 tag team of all time. Them and demolition, the rockers, and such were always highly touted by my friends. The first time I saw Sweet Stan and Beautiful Bobby come out to that theme with Corny i was like naw bro, these are my dudes right here. Best damn Tag Team of all time!

I meet Eaton in the spring of 98 at a hotel near my place(of campus) in college. Providence, RI after a Monday night Nitro. Told him I saw him wrestle a lot in Philly at the Civic Center. The years were 86-88. He couldn't believe I remembered the Civic Center years(it was NWA then) a decade later. One of the nicest guys there that night and enjoyed talking about those years too. When I met Eaton that night in 98 along with Hogan, Mach, DDP, Saturn, Raven, Big Show, Henning, Lugar, Scott Hall, Bobby the Brain(he was a dick), etc.. Raven and Saturn asked us where the nearest strip club was. That was pretty funny. Memorable night for a fan! We had met Goldberg earlier in the day when he got a workout in at the gym we went too. Not as tall as he looks on TV but Jacked nonetheless. Traps were burstin out his tank top. Nice guy though and stopped to give us an autograph.

This was back in the day and age of how pro wrestling is suppose to be.
Promos and skits were only used briefly for intermissions between matches and the real entertainment was when the pro wrestlers stepped through those ropes to go against their opponents.
Now it seems that its the other way around where you see wall-to-wall lengthy promos and such for a period of 2-3 hrs. weekly and having a wrestling match is now the intermission between skits and promos.
Its a damn shame too.

Promos were a big part, they just didn't last nearly as long. Guys could get their point across, get over as a face or heel in under 60 seconds. I loved the format of the old World Championship Wrestling show.

I remember when Jim Cornette debuted on WWF TV and him and Bobby Heenan had their reunion of sorts, with the Brain getting the newcomer over hugely and it was all done in a couple of minutes.
These old school guys really knew how to get the point across quickly & efficiently and they didn't need to take up the first 20 minutes of the program to do it in.

Wow. Just watched the CMFTR after show tribute to Dennis Condrey i think his name is.
First, hearing the guy speak without a voicebox using his thumb, was crazy. CMFTR talking about how great the Midnight Express was, and since i have near zero memory of that tag team, other than maybe a few matches in the mid to late 80s, i missed out on anything great about them.
But seeing this video, hearing how Over they were, and just now realizing that all this time in AEW, FTR have been using Their theme song... pretty cool enlightenment moment right there.
Idk, some sort of cool full circle stuff that just made both FTR and The Midnight Express feel more special.
