Jimmy Garvin WWF Debut in 1992 (rare)

- From Survivor Series Showdown 92 on WWE Network: This is a dark match segment with Jimmy Garvin & Mean Gene. I've often wondered why WWE never hired Jimmy.. this awkward segment might be why.
Oddly enough, they used Jimmy's audio from this for the 1993 WrestleMania album theme. Weird.
I do not own this footage. This is strictly for educational and historical purposes.

Gorgeous Jimmy is still better on the mic there than most of the clowns on the mic in the last few years.
It's crazy that they used 2 soundbites from this little-seen interview about Survivor Series for a song about Wrestlemania.
Mean Gene was the unquestionable GOAT
I remember Jimmy Garvin's words at the beginning from Wrestlemania: The Album.
A song about WrestleMania starts with are you ready for the Survivor Series? How dumb right?
I legit never knew that was Jimmy Jam's voice until just now🤣
@@JayTigers99 same!!!
I thought that was Slick for all these years, until today.
@@JayTigers99 SAME!!! and im a 40+yr wrestling fan! LOL
Jimmy was on point. Long segment though. Better than today's product
I honestly had no idea Jimmy Garvin was ever in the WWF in the 90s. I figured he might have had some time maybe in the early to mid 80s but wow, this must have been super short lived because I was definitely watching WWF at this time and had no idea.
It's his only "appearance", and it never aired so basically he was never in the WWF.
@@jonathanturbide2232 Ah gotcha
Me too. I do not remember this.
Back when Jimmy was still sporting that Weird Al Yankovich long curly frizzy hairdo...Today he practically has almost no hair.
Apparently, this appearance as a possible commentator showed Jimmy Garvin was not suited for that role. Jimmy Garvin definitely should have been a wrestler in the WWF instead.
It is obvious Jimmy did not do his homework on this segment and attempted to wing it. Michael Hayes said something like that when the Freebirds were going to sing/ lip sync their new theme song, and Jimmy did not show up for rehearsal. Jimmy also winged it without knowing the lyrics and followed Michael Hayes around. Michael had to do the notable performance to take attention away from Jimmy, as to divert the audience from Jimmy's improv.
They should've played "sharp dressed man" when he came out.
Or Badstreet USA lol.
He would have gotten booed out of Northern cities with that gimmick. Especially in the 90s. It probably would have worked during the mid-80 though.
Indeed.
Now we know where that “ Are You Ready for the Survivor Series “ line in the beginning of the Wrestlemania song came from.
And "who will survive?"
Love these old, rare, never been seen clips. Thanks.
Now I know where the opening line from the Wrestlemania song from 1993 came from! I never knew Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin was in the WWE.
Right!
Me neither ... He was practically in his prime here but then again I dont think McMahon really doesnt see real talent like everyone says he does ... Jimmy Garvin is a legend and was very underrated.
@@kenjoh.4196 prime? He retired 2 years later
I’m actually so glad I came across this for that exact reason
Yeah that line about Survivor Series in the WrestleMania song. Never made any sense why that line was in there.
Loved the eating the box part. You could tell both of them were leaning into that trying to get each other to break character
Mean Gene almost broke @4:09
Gorgeous Jimmy definitely snorted a few lines backstage before coming out.
He did a few lines of "something." That's for sure.

Man, Jimmy is so un-PC here its f'n hilarious! This is wild. Didn't even know that Jimmy 'Jam' had half a cup of coffee in WWF!
I wasn’t even watching a lot of WWF in the late 80’s and early 90’s, did not remember Jimmy Garvin here and without the beard, seems to be on something 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Coincidentally Jimmy Garvin eventually turned into Mean Gene .😂
I think he's wearing a wig
So true!
In his WCCW days Jimmy Garvin always reminded me of Barry Gibb of The Bee Gee’s.
Thats true lmao

Thanks for the video upload .Didn't know Jimmy Garvin was in WWF .
This was a brutal watch, but I truly appreciated the clip. Adding to the list of things I did not know during this particular era.
Notice his great title Gorgeous is now gone. Jimmy will always be Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin.
This was Great!!!
This interview just seems so mature and edgy for 1992 WWF, probably due to fact that Jimmy Garvin is acting like he's at a party.
That was Jimmy’s gimick back then and it was great… as a heel you hated him and as a baby face you wanted to party with him he was awesome to bad things didnt work out with vince and him… it didnt help that vince wanted to change his name and gimick
@@mdub2000 it would have been dok Hendrix, the sexocutioner, and the great Gyno, jerkin Jimmy.
I've never seen Mean Gene this upset.
Watch the Jake Roberts Tuesday in Texas promo after Jake slapped Miss Elizabeth.
Never knew he had any involvement with the WWF at all! Very odd seeing him here!
I saw him 2 or 3 times on WWE TV and His step-dad Mr. Hands of Stone
This heel announcer gimmick was the drizzling sh*ts for Jimmy Garvin. He decided not to sign with the WWE shortly after filming this segment.
@@Scorch1028, he decided, or WWE decided?
OMG! 😲
" I said are you ready for the Survivor Series" ~ WWF Slam Jam Album!
Never would of guessed, that's who said that line! 🙂👍
Mean Gene was INCREDIBLE
"He'll eat the box." JG claims that there was some interest in he and Precious back in the mid-1980's but they turned it down. Not long after, Randy Savage and Elizabeth debuted.
I did some WikiPedia research. Before WCW made him an offer he couldn't refuse, Bobby Heenan actually wanted to retire completely at end of 1993 when did his final WWF broadcast. My guess is that in '92, Heenan was likely already indicating to WWF that he wanted to retire soon, so WWF was looking for a replacement heel commentator. Garvin clearly didn't make the cut here, but just 2 months later in December, 1992 is when Jerry Lawler first appeared.
Unrelated observation: Jimmy Garvin, in both looks and personality, is the pro wrestling equivalent of porn's Ron Jeremy! Had he been only 10 years younger, he really should've played the "Val Venis" role. Alternately, he could've been awesome as Val's manager.
Jimmy Garvin as Val Venis manager ? Now, that's a wicked idea !
I agree totally..Garvin got into some trouble outside of the ring, and Vince only brought him in as a favor to Michael P.S. Hayes, but even they eventually had a fallen out over why Jimmy wasn't offered a contract, and was actually pretty much told to not come back on WWFs property, they would send his things to him..🤣💯
@@YogiWonKenobi78 Hates wasn’t in WWF at this point.
Yogi wonkenobi are you just making shit up,out of thin air for attention?! Hayes didn't join wwf until 1995! This was in 1992! He didn't get the job, because he sucked! Hayes had absolutely nothing to do with it! Right after this, jimmy Garvin would return to wcw for a very brief stint, before Hayes would go on to become a manager! After they were both released, they BOTH then went on to Global wrestling federation, out of Texas! From there they would BOTH go on to, American wrestling federation, out of Cicero Illinois! From THERE ,Hayes would go on to Become Doc Hendrix in wwf, while Jimmy Garvin would go on to sporadically manage Tristan Hayes, and Buddy Roberts Jr. (Buddy's real son) in some Midwest Indy shows, until retiring completely from wrestling! THERE is your TRUE story! I mean dude seriously, why make shit up?! Lmao 😆 you just look douchey.
Garvin was kind of done with wrestling at this point. He did an interview and a try-out with the WWE for a commentator/interviewer role, but at the same time he was working on his commercial pilots license. Ronne Garvin was a private pilot and pushed him in that direction as a way to get a good new career after wrestling.
He was supposedly made an offer after the try-out, but one of the conditions was that he was going to have to change his performer name, his appearance and become a whole new WWE created character. He said "no" and he went off to a post-wrestling career as a pilot.
He was 40 years old at that point. He kind of knew things were over and it was time to hang it up. He did a few shows after that in various places. But mostly as favors to Michael Hayes.
Some people think if he had accepted the job, he would have ended up in the role that Michael Hayes got a couple years later. That Jimmy Garvin would have become what Doc Hendricks eventually was or something close to it.
I don't think he was considered for the big role Jerry Lawler got in 1992.
Best interview Jimmy Garvin ever made!!
So many rose colored glasses comments here. This crowd didn't care about Garvin at this point and time. The promo was forced and awkward. He was past it here and Vince wouldn't even let him use the "Gorgeous" gimmick. No Patty either to make things even worse. Such a far cry from 1984-87 Garvin it's sad. Garvin was smart to retire when he did.
Probably knackered from being there for 7 hours of squash matches ;)
I used to watch back then, and never knew he was in the wwf. I like this segment.
He really never was officially in the WWF just in this tryout and McMahon thought he lacked marketable skills
I love Jimmy Garvin !!!!!
I imagine they were considering him as a commentator...funny that his buddy Michael Hayes would get this very same gimmick just three years later...
At :51 seconds his fate was sealed. You know Vince would flip not looking at the camera. That, his voice, cadence, and his adult humor would probably piss off the office.
And Okerlund trying to get him to turn around. Just a car crash of a tryout.
I'm sure when Vince refused to sign him, Garvin was like "yeah yeah yeah yeah it ain't my fault" lol.
I never realized that the Freebirds both stepped foot in the WWF.
The Freebirds (Gordy/Hayes/Roberts) had a brief WWF run in 1984 (managed by Cyndi Lauper's manager/boyfriend Dave Wolff). Vince wanted to make Hayes a solo wrestler with the rock-and-roll gimmick (much like he was with the Freebirds). Apparently, the run ended when Hayes showed up "medicated" for a house show where Andre the Giant was working as an agent (another brief moment). Vince let them go after that.
Wow! I never knew he was in the WWF in 92! Thank you for the clip! I always thought it was Vince who said, "I said are you ready for the Survivor Series" from the Wrestlemania album, but I was WRONG, it was Gorgeous Jimmy instead. I have to say this, Jesse the body he's NOT!
This wasn't televised
I always wondered who was saying that on the album as well! And I noticed they also took mean gene’s “who will survive” from this interview as well.

always thought Jimmy Garvin and Jimmy Del Ray would have made a good tag-team "The Jimmy Jigglers"
They actually could’ve been a decent tag team. Both guys weren’t that big, about 5’9-5’10
All jokes aside, if Jimmy Garvin didn't retire in 92, he could have been in a team with Jimmy Del Ray until it was time for Del Ray to replace Stan Lane
What the heck? Those there the days when I actually followed wrestling and this is the first time I hear Jimmy Garvin having joined the WWF. Mind blown.

Yeah, Jimmy Garvin was high on "something." I think that Gene Okerlund was legitimately uncomfortable in this segment.
Wow, I had no idea he ever did this interview. That was god awful, but pretty cool due to its rarity.
How was it awful ??
This interview was probably the genesis of Vince wanting scripted Promos. 🤣
If it had been on air, I may have never watched WWF again. Garvin came off like the guy in a van that parks next to the high school to offer 14 year old girls a ride home.
The Genesis of Garvin?
i wish we had more of this
If you ever wondered what Mean Gene would look like with long hair well there ya go.
For those wondering why Jimmy Garvin showed up in the WWF/E as a commentator (in a tryout) and not as a wrestler in late 1992: In one of Jimmy's shoot interviews, he made a vow to himself to retire as a wrestler after he turns 40 years old. His 40th birthday was about a month before this audition we see here. This is why he never came in to WWF/E as a wrestler. He did keep his own word... he never wrestled in the ring again full-time. Even though he did wrestle on a few special occasions afterwards, he was not a full-time wrestler.
I just saw his shoot interview. Thanks Monique.
Thank you for that clarification. Freebirds forever!
It was never intended that he wrestle in the WWE. They wanted him as a manager, interviewer and commentator. But the stuff about him turning 40 and wanting to get out is correct. He had two options at this time. He was either going to go work for the WWE or he was going to get a commerical pilots license and make a new career. He decided to be a pilot.
Dark interview segment for the Survivor Series Showdown 92 just before the event was chnaged to Mr Perfect and 'Macho Man' Randy Savage Vs Ric Flair and Razor Ramon. and yeah Jimmy Garvin didn't fit into the WWF at all judging by this interview with Mean Gene. Whoa never knew this even happened until now, called me shocked indeed.
@@slwalsh I doubt that because Vince and Bobby continued to talk about the main event during Survivor Series Showdown, right until the very end of the show, when they set up Bobby receiving a phonecall with information that the Ultimate Warrior would not be teaming with Savage at Survivor Series, and then Bobby tries to find out who's going to be the replacement as the show goes off the air.
Yes!!! Very true and incredible mic guy, too bad he didn’t get the chance to stay.

Dude I think he's brilliant here. Yea he doesn't bring that wwf traditional so called etiquette but that's what makes it good. Jimmy has same humor as Piper, Heenan, Perfect. This was right when wwf was going thru aftermath of Hulkamania. I think he would have been a great commentator on like the rampage and best of vhs's. Was no worse here than any of guys Vince hired to fill Jesse's spot.
J.G. was so underrated on the mic
I agree I thought this was excellent
He could definately made a decent Heel commentator. Maybe not up to Heenan or Lawler standards, but maybe on a b-show.
classic what wrestling is missing these days
Doc Hendrix & Jimmy Jam Garvin, would have been a Great Color Commentary Team! : )
Reading these comments make me think of the Magoo effect. Since everyone knows he never made it on the air, people will search the whole thing like crazy for errors, because that's what they expect. I didn't think it was that bad. Do we even know it was the promo that broke the deal? Maybe they just didn't come to terms somehow?
Wrestling fans for you. Mindless drones. All of em except me
He was supposedly offered a job by WWE. But he turned it down. He intended to get out of wrestling (he was 40) and rather than stay in as an interviwer/commentator, he decided to become a commercial pilot.
It’s not my fault!!!

I don't know much about him but he clearly is very good and confident in the mic and in a more reality based sense than a lot of the gimmick wrestlers like ultimate warrior etc could bring to the table. Something that was lacking somewhat in this era of the WWF. When Ric Flair arrived it brought a bit of realism into the cartoon world with the undertaker as the main heel at the time. This guy could have added to that also
"Gorgeous" Jimmy was a mainstay in JCP\NWA a few years before, and WCCW for a time before that. He was a "pretty boy" and had his wife Patty as his valet, "Precious" (and before her, "Sunshine").

This is where "who will survive" from the Wrestlemania song is sampled from
I always found it interesting that someone who had such a minimal role with the company, was forever immortalized on the titular track off of Wrestlemania the Album, which they would use on and off, albeit often only as the instrumental variant, for the better part of the next 3 decades. I remember listening to the album as a child, when it was initially released in early 1993, and wondering who that was saying "Are you ready... For the Survivor Series,: eventually resigning to the fact that it was likely one of the musicians hired for the album. Imagine my surprise when stumbling upon this clip decades later. I was still left wondering however, why a song entitled Wrestlemania, which was about Wrestlemania, mentioned the Survivor Series.
On the subject of Wrestlemania the Album, I've always felt that it provided some insight as to which 1993 departures were largely unexpected, and likely the choice of the performers, rather than the federation, that they part ways with the company. What I mean is, they clearly wouldn't devote tracks to anyone they felt was soon headed down south. I mean, in the case of Hacksaw, even if they were aware he was leaving, I can kind of see them giving him a track as thanks for his years of service to the company and to the fans, since at that point, similar to Macho, Duggan had assumed the role of an elder statesman of sorts (on an unrelated aside, that's actually my favorite Savage incarnation... Elder Statesman/ Living Legend Randy Savage Circa 1992 to 1994... but I digress.). That would make sense, given the tone of his song, it's something that somewhat pays homage to his career, and his gimmick, so it could be perceived as ride off into the sunset/retirement/swan song. Macho's "Speaking from the Heart," serves a similar purpose, but he'd stick around for another year and a half. The Nasty Boys however? They were basically gone after the rumble that year, but since they're prominently featured on the album, you have to figure the WWF didn't want the, waltzing right out the door down to Atlanta. Same thing with Boss Boobs. He was gone after losing to Bammer at the Rumble. I've heard Bossman decided to head for higher ground in light of the steroid trial, although, I always felt it was a shame he left. Given the lack of main eventers around that time, Boss Man could have been elevated throughout 1993 and 1994. I felt the same thing about perfect, with his back injury/Lloyd's of London claim pulling him out of action by the end of the year. Anyhow, I just always thought it was odd how almost half the wrestlers on the album were gone by the end of the year.
