Grimfrost proudly presents Þat Mælti Mín Móðir (My Mother Told Me) from the album Lärads Grenar. Composed by Einar Selvik and arranged and performed by the Swedish band Hindarfjäll it features Peter Franzén on song. Peter Franzén portrayed King Harald Finehair in the tv-series Vikings. It was Peter, or rather his character Harald Finehair, who sang the song for the first time, popularising and immortalising it.
Here Peter reprises his performance, singing the song in the Old Norse language - just as the poem was originally written by Egil Skallagrímsson. The video, written and directed by Grimfrost, tries to capture the story of the poem, where a small boy is told by his mother that he too will one day buy a ship with many oars, stand in the stern and head out with Vikings.

As an icelander, I found it funny how easy it was to follow along with the lyrics. It is amazing how close the languages were back then. Cant we go back? XD

I tried translating it as well as i could into contemporary danish, with dictionaries.

@joelm33 The language you use in Iceland is a direct descendant from Old Norse. Some language books says that the Icelandic language never have changed since it was occupied by the Vikings because it was isolated.
Actually, the only thing that confuses me is the pronunciation of the letter eth, ð. I thought it was pronounced as 'th' in THought. I know that in later years, it was said as 'dh', but I thought even in Modern Icelandic, eth was still pronounced the same.
This is the version I've been waiting for. Nothing against the ubiquitous English language versions out there, but hearing the song in Old Norse with traditional instruments, makes it truly epic.

What always makes me laugh is that every time some sings this song in English, it's not the same song. The more accurate version is;

The weird English version doesn't make much sense when you know even a small amount of Old Norse/Icelandic. Especially when in English no one ever says anything about Vikings when it's part of the song.

I would think it's because the lyrics get misunderstood and muddled. These lyrics seem similar enough to me but the reason for the inaccurate translation is probably to preserve some poetry and rhyming. Also, the lyrics to the English version sound more "old timey" than the more literal translation you've provided.
@@itztocaJulia Its believed that you do not sing Old Norse poetry and the Old Norse version does not rhyme actually. Also, the poem is literal, because the words used leave no room for imagination. The translation I gave is one from an expert. The poem was made by an 11 year old kid because his mom said 'they should buy him a ship, hes ready to be a Viking.'

They weren’t “Vikings” the term “Viking” was a verb, they went on a viking, so the English translation of “sails to distant shores” is accurate as a verbiage aspect. 😂
Seriously, the costumes and everything are so on point. Even the hairstyles are accurate. Somebody needs to hire these guys for a movie or tv series.
Funny thing, they're not costumes. Those are actually the dwellers of Grimfrost viking settlement in Sweden. They live like that 70% of the year. If I remember that you can go there and live amongst them but it will cost you, presumably alot and I think the requirements is you must bring something to the table that is useful.

I am also Swedish and it wouldn’t surprise me if I or some hundreds of other Swedes, Scandinavians and what not to share the blood of that viking, or any other Viking. Why is this? Well people during these times went around to brothels and such, a example of this very thing comes when you see the American presidents. Only 2 of them don’t share the blood of king John, and no one of these presidents weren’t even Obama. I could probably share the blood of some random lord/king/legend that I don’t know about, but maybe 10000 people also share his/hers blood.
That is why I am not impressed, tho ofc if you know whom was your ancestor there is a big chance no one else have found about it yet which would mean that you can still flex with it.

I am simply continuing the tradition that my ancestors did. Because I am them. As far as "Viking blood" or DNA. I dont really care how many share that persons DNA, and its not a flex. its very simple really. I share his last name, and DNA, along with many other scandanavian men and women, as I have two sides of my family from Norway, Sweden, and then traced them into Iceland and scotland after their invasion. The son of Njål landed in scotland, and I traced him to my grandfathers side. The simple fact is í have 60% scandanavian DNA, 20% Scottish DNA, and 13% french, and German mix, and 8% south slavic DNA. My family is full of warriors, stretching from two grandfathers who fought in world war 2, back to the norse, scythians, germanic tribes, and the picts as well. Thats whats important. Im from a long line of warriors and Men who refused to put down their weapons. Whether or not someone else share that DNA is of no concern to me. I also spent time in gangs on the street, I was locked up at 11 for the first time in a juvenile facility, I have survived many things on the streets, watched friends die and buried them, abuse, violent shootings, and being locked up, homeless, drug abuse, and alcoholism. So for me í was lost until I figured out why I was so tough, and why im still here and not dead. Because I am part of these fearless men. I was always different. Never afraid of anyone, or death. That was long before I figured out who I was. Ive had pistols in my face, and looked death in the face, and I never flinched. Now I know why. Not all men are created equally.
Ps. I will sáy that people like you who go into comment section to pick apart, so called "viking" wannabes or followers are annoying. If you dont like them fine. But its really on them to be what they want. I see alot of people in this whole community always trying to out do eachother, instead of just getting along. Its always, "american vikings are stupid wannabes" or "These viking people in Sweden are so stuck up, cause they have a higher percentage of DNA.". No one gives a flying fk. Just do you. @@LordOfSweden I have thought about getting one done, I just don’t like all that fine print on many of those tests. I’ll look for a reputable company if I do get a test done. These days it’s essential. There may be some Celtic in my blood, but I’m not sure. As far as I know, I’m about 80% German, the rest is Saxon and Norwegian-again as far as I know.

This brought me tears. My ancestry is viking. I come from the Norman side. Rollo would be my ancestor's king. My life follows this story somewhat even today. My father went out to conquer and provide. He worked for a defense contractor as an engineer. watched where he was on a map as he always travelled. Interestingly, Paris, France was a destination I remember him going. I hear the Vikings made it to Paris. My dad was on familiar ground. Ha. My turn came. I did the same. My time to conquer and I did it militarily. I like that it shows the generations. I like it shows both sides. The son and father. Generational DNA. It's part of us and it gives me comfort knowing that my life makes sense and I am not alone. My anger and warrior spirit I find so impossible to control at times now makes sense. With much power comes much responsibility in self control. That's a bit harder for a viking in a world so different to our ancestor's ways. Even my joining the navy and volunteering submarines and getting into mischief makes perfect sense now. I was an adventuring pirate at heart.
Sometimes I believe Thor's hammer can be a heavy weight. Odin's search for truth is in me also. Wielding the hammer wisely and not turning into a Berserker in every situation has been a battle for me. I suppose where much is given, much is expected. From what I can gather my journey goes from Vikings from the North. To Normandy France. Than England by norman invasion and than Wales. Then Irish invasion and a few hundred years in Scotland and then America in 1630. And I am the last of my line. But there's many more out there to conquer so all is well. I go to a great hall prepared for me and I will meet my ancestors and fellowship and have a great feast.
As a Norman I was Christianized. I may not wear Thor's hammer but I respect it and I didn't give up the warrior spirit. I guess Norman's called themselves God's warriors. I'm still in the body of an adventurous Viking raider and conquerer with a Spirit added inside. But I respect my ancestors and I haven't forgotten their path. True to my people I seek truth and for me it's the risen Christ I have found makes me an even greater warrior. Finish strong my fellow warriors. There is an ominous, loneliness, brutality, harmoniousness to this song that instills in me a longing for a bygone era.

for those who want it, the correct translation of the poem reads:
-my mother told me or this my mother told me
-I am owed or They owe me (they in this case are men that had some altercation whit the poem writer after a deadly fight between 2 kids, one of which was the poem writer)
-I ought to sail as a viking
-swift and good oars ( a ship is never mentioned but is assumed due to context)
-stand atop the kastell/ lypting ( take note that a kastell on a viking longboat is a free standing platform that's risen above the normal "dekk", lyptning meaning the back of the ship, where the helmsman is standing)
-Steer the merchant ship ( the poem specifies "Knerri" which is the plural of Knar which is a merchant long boat.)
-hold steady to harbour. / hold steady to home
-chop down man after man ( poem reads; hǫggva mann ok annan. think of "hoggva" like the verb of chopping timber.)

I really like the shot at the end, when the kid unsheathes his father's sword. The implication is heavy enough, though I like how the sword does not have blood on it, because of course it wouldn't, but does reflect the red on his father's coat on its edge. If intentional, very good touch. The song is awesome, also, very faithful and atmospheric.

This song gives me goosebumps.. I love the nordic version of this song, especially sung by Peter Franzén. In the one episode of Vikings I was totally blown away as Harald sung it with Halfdan. I love Peters rough voice.. he´s an acellent actor and singer.

Not accurate at all if you specifically mean with regards to the vikings. These sorts of instruments all date back to hundreds of years after the viking era ended and by which point, Scandinavia had mostly converted to Christianity. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely appreciate the artistic value of this but there is so much misinformation floating around about instruments such as the tagelharpa, jouhikko and Kravik lyre. And even Einar Selvik himself openly rejects the term "viking" to describe his music. The truth is, we don't have any idea what truly accurate viking music sounds like as it's all been lost over time.

I do not understand the actual words, but their meanings, and the emotions they sing with, span the great language divide. I felt this song more than just listened to it. It resonated deep within me and I mourn the loss of the Viking age. Today's world has just spun into madness.
It's not all that deep or anything, it's about going off with vikings and killing people.
Put of all the versions I've heard, by far the best one out there, makes me feel like a badass
