As a guitarist, you spend a fair amount of time alone practicing, writing, and honing your craft - necessary, but not always exciting. What if you had a bassist and drummer that were always available, ready to learn your song the first time you played it, were well-versed in multiple styles of music, started and stopped when you wanted, and played at your tempo? Now you can with the Digitech Trio Band Creator pedal!
More than a static, preset-pattern generator, the Trio is a band creator in a pedal. Plug in your guitar, press the footswitch, and the Trio learns your chords and rhythm by listening to what you play; press the footswitch again and the Trio automatically generates bass and drum parts to match.
The Trio has seven different musical genres to choose from and twelve different musical styles within each genre, selectable via the Genre and Style knobs. The Trio can learn three different song parts; verse, chorus, bridge, for example. All of these features are selectable in during playback, allowing you to “audition” different interpretations of your song. The Alt Time button offers another variation, usually half-time or double-time. The bass and drums have individual Level knobs and there's a Tempo knob to slow-down or speed-up your song.
The Trio's outputs are optimized to sound great whether you're listening through your guitar amp, headphones or a mixer. Two different, appropriate guitar sounds, per genre, can be selected by pushing the GUITARFX button. This enables you to use the Trio with just your guitar, a cable, and a set of headphones.
Here's two more points I thought were worth mentioning:
First, if you press and hold the Trio's footswitch while one part is playing, the next Part button will flash and be cued up, ready to play when the previous Part ends.
Second, when you use both outputs on the Trio at the same time, the Bass and Drums automatically get routed to the Mixer output and your guitar goes to the Guitar output.
Basically, the Trio is your full-time rhythm section in a pedal - thanks for watching!

Greetings from North Wales 🏴 Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I've had this pedal sat in a drawer for about five years now (it was a birthday gift) , and thought it was about time I used it. I'm not a great guitar player, but I am a singer/songwriter who uses guitar to write songs and I can see this will be a useful tool. I'm not great with tech but this has given me the confidence to give it a go.
Compliments to the reviewer on a concise and useful presentation. It also helps that you are quite musical.
I could only dream about pedals like this during the 1980's.. Finally ...
A very well presented video. Thank you. Bought one of these years ago and just got it out to play with on a rainy day.
Don, That was the BEST demo of this very interesting pedal out there! Thanks!
I really like the Outro track you played. My son and I both have Pre-orders in place. My intent is to feed the output to my Ditto Looper pedal and/or my Studio One 2 DAW. Hope it all comes together... Thanks again!
I'm going to snag this as soon as it is available. This will help me very much in my home studio.
Very good presentation and demonstration.
Thank you so much. A demo/review that actually focuses on the product. Very clear and no "flash boy" guitaring. I am grateful and will now get the best out of my Band Creator.
Try em both together!
Don Carr has great presence, knows well the equipment when he does a demonstration, and is by far the best man for this type of video. I have watched literally hundreds of videos on You Tube, or, I should say, I have begun to watch hundreds of video demos here. I often stop watching because home-made demos often have poor sound or video quality. Sweetwater's demos are always top notch, and Don offers a straight forward explanation of the gear he demos. Now whenever I want to watch a demo, I look for a Sweetwater demo. Thanks, Don Carr!
Great video. Helps me understand this is not for me but, at a certain point in my playing, I could have seen the usefulness for sure. Thanks again.
I just got one of these used. Apparently he bought it from your site! Looking forward to messing around with it. Thanks for the demo.
Some nice playing. Nice demo!
I have to say I love the idea of using this with a looper!. Might be tricky but if it works it would be fun.
This pedal is awesome I'm getting one no doubt great intro on this!
Woah !!! Blew my mind ! As a one woman band (guitarist ...), this pedal is one of my biggest dream ever becoming true ! i never thought something like this would happen one day ...
I'm currently using a Boss loop pedal as a tool to jam and practice my scales to... But THIS pedal is even more fitting for this purpose. It's absolute genius !
Hooray. Someone actually explaining how the thing works, rather than just using it as a platform for their own brilliance. Plus this fellow has amazing hair.
I dig the outro solo a lot. Don's also an articulate product demonstrator.
Just neat with what they are creating in the way of tools nowadays for musicians.
people complain too much this thing is very cool
I agree!
Great idea,,i want one.
I currently use a loop to warm up and practice, this goes one step further. Bass and drums in a box is very cool for those situations where you need just a duet at lower volume. I can expand the song list and The Improv time utilizing this tool.
Solo gigs duets and fill in time.
There is no way that you can replace real players I agree but for short stents and smaller projects this is perfect
The playing at the beginning sounds like the late, great J.J. Cale. Nice!
Great demo focusing on the effect pedal without the typical UA-cam overplaying/very tasteful !!!###
Sounds like a great practice tool for players with no other musicians to practice or play with!!!!
Yes! Exactly, and with the mixer out function, you can use it without neighbors complaining.
Thanks for the video I do have this arriving to me in a couple of days. My questions are can you record with a line out what you have created? Can you use an audio interface like the Katana Go as your effects and run the Trio effects on its clean channel?
Thank you very much. much.
Sweet outro : )
I bought a demo from Sweetwater. It's pretty decent but I have a hard time clearing one setting and having the pedal learn another, and getting the pedal to switch from play to learn and vice versa. What am I missing?
I’ve had one of these for a couple of years, haven’t done anything with it. I think its time . Good video.
I just broke my out after not using it for over a year...even though it's the 1st gen one with no Looper..trying to use it with the TC Electronic Ditto Mini Looper... and though it's challenging ...it's still fun!
I’ve had one as well, thought it was time to dig it back out and give it another try.
Would this pedals work well for a solo acoustic guitar performer or would I be better with a stomp box?thanks.
What if you do not play chord but arpegios (like in a ballad f.ex "Nothing else matters")?
Can you plug a mic in, so you can use for acoustic guitars (that don't have pickups)...?
I have two of these on order since Namm, hopefully you will have them in soon.
Nam was in the 60’s I hope they showed up
What is the name of the tune you're playing for the outro! Dig this pedal BTW!!
Can this be used in a continuous playing, like going from song to song nonstop?
How do hear what you played for the rhythm playback?
I have no guitar playback just the drums and bass.
Thank you
Hi there. 2 things - I just noticed it's at 500mA. Yikes, so much for Voodoo Lab. Also, how long does the memory last while it's "learning" your chords? IE, if I play verse, chorus, verse, bridge, would it memorize all of that?
If i am olaying a made ip solo lead how will it know ?Id be playing it in e I normally play it on my keyboard with bass built in and just olay.
Can I use my Digitech RP-1000 multi effects pedal instead of the built in guitar effects on the Trio pedal?
need a metal version of this. blast beat mode
I was wondering can you play Slayer riffs and will the bass and drums keep up with the riffs you write?
Actually , it's like Band In A Box, but options "theme" and "solo" are missing , and to keep the songs in memory too !!! When this will be avalable I'll by me a Trio !!!
I am thinking about buying this. I going to try it out but a consumer on his review said the rhythm gets mixed up and can't go for a 3 minute song. He said it's almost perfect if Digitech just would have done it right.
So this only works if you play chords? What about riffs, arpeggios, etc?
Thumbs up for PRS!!!
This is really good. Well, though it really can't sound like real bass or real drums, it does a great job of reproducing patters based on the players style. This should suffice for any practice. Why, even live performances could be great !!
Sort of reminds me of the "rhythm section" on the old Lowrey organs.
How many complete songs does it hold , please?
So Tell me how do you make sure that part 1 has the same tempo as part 2 or 3 ?
Does this thing remember what's it has learnt ? Would be a pain teaching it between songs on stage??
I´m still waiting for the Groupies Band Creator to be released.
is that a pedal in your pocket or are you just happy to see me.
I might have to check one of these out.....Its silly but kinda fun haha....Its weird for sure
Can you use it with an electro acoustic? Presume so
Sounds like a good solo practice tool, but I can't imagine recording anything with this (not that the algorithm isn't impressive). I'm more interested in where people (or Trio) takes it in the future with new models.
Nice demo.....easy to get ideas rather organized.
Does the TRS cable @ 5:04 have to have "stereo" connector plugs?
No, unfortunately not. The only way to get stereo out is through the headphone jack.
can I run other pedals through it?
Can we save parts to a pertectal songs?
ok, so you get this. I happen to have a roland gr55. I would play my guitar thru the gr55 behind the trio and run it into the jamman, Then from the jamman into my studio one DAW thru my mixer. Instant group with all diffrent instraments. sounds like fun to me. AN on strage app would be just a guitat trio and jamman and a pa. Cake.
Great
I've got the BeatBuddy, you can have the songs in memory on the SD. I don't see anything like that on the demos of the Digitech Trio, it looks like it has to learn the song every time... If there is no possibility to keep the songs created in memory and that you must for the gig on stage teach the pedal every time, then not for me ...
So you go through all the programming to play one song? Why isn't there a way to record parts for several songs, like you'd use if you were playing a gig? Did I miss something?
Will the Trio work with alternate tunings, such as half/whole step drop, drop D, open G, etc? Also work with a banjo?
Henry Mays Yes, any tuning... provided you feed it simple chords in the "learning" stage. It needs to know major/minor. Root and third is enough. You play the fancy stuff AFTER teaching it the basic progression. Same with banjo if you get as close as possible to the range of a guitar, I suppose.
I like mine but it buzzes like a mother. Maybe it's in the wrong position on my pedal board?
Looks like a cool toy.it does great for lawrence welk style of music,I would like to see if it works as good for Rock
Is this practical for live performance?
I assume you cannot save anything? i.e. you have to train this for each song you plan on playing. Is this correct ? and if so do they have any plans of making a unit like this where you can save the background tracks ??
Bought one of these and returned it the next day. Cool concept but lack of storage is silly and having to teach it each time you want to generate a background track is cumbersome at best. I will keep an eye on this company though for the next generation of this but for me this device is lost it's appeal after an hour or so.
Now I understand why no one replied to this comment
Curious how this would work in a whole pedalboard setup? Will distortion/overdrive or any other effect affect the bass and drum parts at all?
I bet you can do whatever you want to the output signal
What kind of amp is recommended and affordable to plug in for the bass and drums to shine through?
If ur on a budget, get an orange 20rt or 35....it sounds amazing through both....if u have a bit more money and want tube is go with a Marshall dsl5 which sounds great and although it has an audio input, the input only works at 1W and through the headphones....
This is a very cool bedroom practice device...I have no idea why so many people don't see the value in this...
It's not made to play for 40,000 people at knebworth...it's PERFECT for your bedroom..
Where do I get the .pdf...?
How do the drums sound? Realistic or? Because the snare sounds kinda chincy on my computor.
mattoidmusic Testing Testing, is this thing on?
If this would have a hardrock, punk, alt hardrock, funk metal, metal, nu metal or at least a few of those, i would definetly get it!
For now i'll stick with my drum machine from zoom multi fx and my looper.
Seems a really nice piece of gear tho ^^
The answer to my prayers....
A doubt. My guitar is connected to a series of effects pedals. In which position the Digitech TRIO should be positioned so that the effects do not distort TRIO'S simulations of bass and drums? If the TRIO is the "first effects pedal" probably the result will not be good. If the TRIO is the "last of effects pedals" would be the best solution? Or this "gadget" must be used stand alone with a guitar + amp?
Carlos M Separating the two signals (guitar and bass/drums) is the best solution. It has two outs: "amp" and "mixer". Ideally you would plug your guitar into the Trio, then use the amp out into your effects into your guitar amp, and use the mixer out for the bass/drums into any sound system (another clean amp, personal stereo, PA, mixing console, powered monitors etc). If you're using one amp only, then plug first into the trio and try not to use effects as they will obviously affect the b/dr sound too.
Any plans to make one for bass guitar players?
***** It doesn't look like it at this point. We'll keep you informed!
I got one recently, and it adds too much noise / static to the sound
Can you play fast metal riffs through this and will the base and drums keep up? Think holy wars from Megadeth
Hi and thanks for your message, hope you're well and safe.
The Tempo function of the Trio pedal allows for loops to be recorded slower and then be sped up to taste. There are 12 Metal style knob options from Metalcore to Thrash. Check out this UA-cam link for more:

Can it read the club owner and get us paid?
Haha! Yeah, man. But then you have to sort out with the pedal who gets what cut of the dough. Those things drive a hard bargain.
At least the drummer n bassist won`t try it on with the mrs
Nice shirt
Can this also function as a normal looper pedal for playing live gigs?
Hi, Russell. Yes, the looper is controlled independently of the band section so you can use the looper without having the backing band going. The looper has pretty basic functionality so if you're wanting to do any sort of complicated or intricate looping, you may want to consider a different dedicated looper for live performance.
Thanks for your interest!

Do I have to reprogram it every time I use it or does it remember what I did last time?
Hey, Dash. The Digitech Trio doesn't have a save function, but it can learn chord patterns very quickly, making it easy to play along with. Let us know if you have any additional questions. Thanks!

Would it work with a Keyboard instead of Guitar?
Hi Mike Finkel! Yes, but remember that it is designed to work with guitar and read chords. Get the right input level, use a sound with no effects that is not too complex; piano for example, play within the guitar’s range, and play block chord progressions of no more than 6 notes.
Thanks for watching!
Don Carr
If you can't move the parts with the foot, it's not gonna be useful to transition parts?!
the trio vs beat buddy..i cant decide can you tell me the pros ? i use the digitech rp500..can work with both ?
rolando0572 I've got the BeatBuddy, you can have the songs in memory on the SD. I don't see anything like that on the demos of the Digitech Trio, it looks like it has to learn the song every time... If there is no possibility to keep the songs created in memory and that you must for the gig on stage teach the pedal every time, then not for me ...
pleyadier You can buy a jamman solo to go with it for saving loops, and both would still be cheaper than the beatbuddy. Nothing against the Beatbuddy, looks sweet as well, but since I already have a looper think I'd go for the trio.
pleyadier
I don't think the Beat Buddy has a bass guitar.
Does it...?
Karma 7 I am bassplayer ! :D
pleyadier I'm sorry.
When will it "really" be available? I heard March, then I heard May.
Hi Ghost Picker. Our current ETA is the first part of April.
Took it out to an open mic and the drummer and bass players got groupies now!
Will it do metal???...PLEASE MAKE ONE DIGITECH!!!
There's a drum pedal out there that TOTALLY CLOWNS THIS, the ":rythym buddy",however, when they get more economical,(for me,anyway)i might try this...
Will it work for harmonica
POPCULTURE CHAMELEON The Trio generates a bass and drum pattern based on the chord progression and rhythm that you play into it. It's designed for guitar-level input, so if with the harmonica you can create a rhythmic chord progression at guitar level with a quarter-inch output, it will theoretically work. Good luck!
- Don Carr
Hey, if you get one and use it with a Harmonica, please record it and put it on Facebook! I'd love to see it!
trio amp out>mixer out> to ditto stereo looper mono input>stereo input then out to mixer for stereo system audio .
You're the captain from HIMYM when he was still a hippie.
Is TRS the same as an instrument cable?
Hi DcsOrCity! TRS is the abbreviation for “Tip, Ring, Sleeve.” It looks like a standard 1/4″ or 1/8″ plug but with an extra “ring” on its shaft. TRS cables have two conductors plus a ground (shield). They are commonly used to connect balanced equipment or for running both left and right mono signals to stereo headphones. You will also find TRS connectors on the stem of Y cables. These are used for mixer insert jacks where the signal is sent out through one wire and comes back in through the other.
Instrument cables are commonly known as TS cables and TS is the abbreviation for “Tip, Sleeve” and refers to a specific type of 1/4″ or 1/8″ connector that is set up for 2-conductor, unbalanced operation. One insulator ring separates the tip and sleeve. The tip is generally considered the “hot,” or the carrier of the signal, while the sleeve is where the ground or shield is connected. TS cables are best known as guitar or line-level instrument cables.
How does it sound with an acoustic guitar?
Hi Mariano Catbagan Jr. It sounds great, depending on the quality of your acoustic guitar pickup.
+SweetwaterSound what if you're using an acoustic electric through a PA?
This pedal is good for practicing. Its not meant for cover songs...
This would be interesting...if it had a memory where you could pre-write/save songs (for all those crappy open mics). Alas, as far as I can tell, there is no memory so the open mics are safe, unless the idiot who decides to do his setups as part of his turn on all three songs shows up. I've seen people do similar using loopers.
anyone know a good way to hook this up good when using a modeling amp with effects. If you turn on effects it will mess up the bass and drums on trio.
J Steen, the best way would be to use both outputs on the Trio. When you do, the guitar sound is routed without effects to the Amp output and the bass/drum mix is routed to the Mixer out. You could plug the Amp out (guitar signal) into the input of your modeling amp. The Mixer out could then be routed to another sound source that sounds better with full-range signal. Hope this helps, thanks for your question!
Don Carr
SweetwaterSound Thanks Don for your very detailed explanation. Much appreciated!
J Steen If you should happen to have a bass amp on hand, sending the mixer out to the bass amp sounds great!
All I want is a tuned kick drum on the beat. An audience can accept that as real enough.
There's quite a bit to work with there and it's a brilliant pedal, but I wasn't too impressed at all with the parameters that the genre and the other (couldn't see it) option brought in to the vibe. Kind of a little too funky vibe for me. I'll check out another review before writing this pedal off.
be nice if Drum & Bass were seperable - maybe on the plus version?
I rigged big knobs on top of the Bass and Drums controls. While playing I'm able to turn the bass off or the drums off with a swoop of my shoe
I don't think this trio can follow fast and heavy metal rhythm? Will it write a bass or drum line to a fast guitar rhythm? every video I see so far is a easy rock guitar rhythm! Also how about when u first playing your rhythm will it keep your rhythm so u can play solo over?
Hi *****! The Trio will follow any tempo, no matter how slow or fast. I personally chose to use a medium tempo and simple chords to show the Trio’s stylistic diversity and to keep the demo to a manageable length, haha! The Trio is a deep pedal that will do a lot. That being said, the Trio doesn’t have Metal specifically as a Genre and none of the Styles reflect typical metal bass and drum patterns so even though the Trio will play whatever tempo you play into it, you may not be able to find appropriate bass and drum patterns to fit your expectations. There is a USB port specifically for firmware updates so who knows? There should be Style and Genre updates, additions, changes, etc.
Thanks for watching!

I have to agree with CTROCK, if you want to sell this to metal heads and hard rock players, playing simple chords and blues type stuff through the Trio is not the way to sell it. Proof is always in the pudding, not one person that has got their hands on this supposedly wonder of all wonders has really shown how it can handle good rock and roll. It is like me wanting to buy a Ferrari and the sales man takes me on a slow drive around the lot and expects me to buy it...... not going to cut it. Sorry pal...... you want to really sell this wonder of all wonders....... show us all the wow factor!
I agree billy b!
Billy B guys- I'm no salesman, but my guess is this thing is just really new right now. With all the metal heads out in internet land, I'm sure it won't be long until there are some heavier demos. Of course it may be in German, but thats ok.
ok. thanks.
Effect board for guatur
But aren't any of the Boss Loopers better than this one? Just wondering? Thanks.
Jesse Reyna This is a completely different beast than a looper pedal.
So which is better..the first tiny animal or the second one;no offense? Just wanted to know.
Jesse Reyna
They function completely differently and serve different purposes: one cannot be better than the other.
gotcha thanks.
***** i'll take a stab at that one for ya? This pedal does alot right-i'm assuming right? Their not going to pack too many goodies into one guitar sound package because there's not enough money in it for them. If they did as a one time gamble;they would probably find that they would be overwhelmed about the number of techs they would have to hire to work on them because something didn't work out as they planned or thought up? Just thinking..that's it man. Take care.
