The Long Emancipation sounds great. I’ve got Truman on my TBR shelf and yes, its size is intimidating. I hope Rubicon is a fun read! Have a great weekend, Bill.

Thanks for stopping by Vin. Always a pleasure to have the Historathon guru over! I think you will like The Long Emancipation. It's a short work, but very good. Very easy to read, too. I am thoroughly enjoying the book on Truman. You need to dig into that one as well. Thanks for watching. Have a great weekend.

Truman was such an amazing experience to read for me last year. It was my top book last year. Took 6 months, but well worth it. The amount of new stuff you learn just due to the sheer size of the book will give you plenty of new stuff to be interested in. Hope all is well Bill.

Thanks Ed! Good to hear from you. I hope you are well. Truman is really good! I hope it doesn't take 6 months ... I am known for that. I read parts and then take a break and come back later. I am buddy reading this one, so we are planning on it going into February, hopefully not any further. What are you reading right now?? Thanks for watching. Have a great weekend.

Loved the weather report. I’ve got a mini weather station on my book shack and I’m getting really good at wind speeds. I’m a bit bogged down with chunky books at the moment. I’m loving War and Peace and also SPQR that I’m buddy reading with John David and Stephanie Cohen. Hope you thaw out soon 😊

Thanks Melissa. My daughter gets into her movies and sings right along with them ... at full volume. She keeps me youthful. I haven't heard of that book. I will have to look into it. Thanks for passing along the title. Does it focus solely on the 1692 Trials?

@@billruttenberg That's cute. The book looks into the New England witch trial period as a whole. This wasn't the only reason, but a main reason for accusing a woman was because, if she was to inherit money in her own right due to a lack of men in her family, that upset the social order. Witches couldn't inherit. Convicting a woman was a convenient way to make sure that women couldn't gain financial independence and therefore social power through inheritance.

@@TimeTravelReads That answer makes sense on why it would happen. There was also some stuff dealing with who was taxing who; and how the farmers were losing land because of taxes. It led to accusations. Interesting stuff.

Good evening, Bill, I read the Path Between the Seas a number of years ago and it was fascinating. At the time I read it, the Michener Art Museum, Doylestown Pa. Had an Exhibition of paintings on the Panama Canal that was just stunning. The painter was Jonas Lie and a number of the paintings came from West Point Military Academy's collection. I have just finished today, Crow May by Kathleen Grisson, novel, a very sad sorry. Stay warm!.

Hey Tina! One of the essays in this book I am reading now by McCullough was about the nasty conditions faced while building the Canal. Very interesting. The politics behind getting the canal built were fascinating. I feel bad for the people of Panama. They got overlooked by all of the imperial powers. I have read other stuff about that and it always fascinates me. Also interesting was the essay about the architect of the Brooklyn Bridge and what they had to do in later years to conserve the thousands of drawings he did to build the bridge. I found it to be a very good essay. Would you recommend Crow May? Thanks for watching Tina. Have a great weekend.

Ira Berlin sounds good. As I recall that was a premise espoused by WEB Du Bois in his _Black Reconstruction._

As far as the weather goes ... you can have it. I went out and scooped snow after I made this video and it was deep! I have to scoop in stages because my back knots up and I can't do all of it at one time like I used to. I am getting old!

I'm My husband and I read Truman long ago, enjoyed it, but we're from Missouri and used to hearing about Truman and his library, I mostly remember his Packard.😊 I'm still working my way through A History of France by John Julius Norwich, just got through Napoleon III, read several novels but the one most enjoyed was The Netanyahus by Joshua Cohen, which won the Pulitzer in '22 and started reading Independence Day by Richard Ford, a sequel to the Sportswriter, Independence Day is also a Pulitzer winner and has nothing to do with the Will Smith, Bill Pulman, Randy Quaid movie, which I loved seeing in a movie theatre with an enthusiastic crowd, like being a fifties kid again. The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell is a novel about Lucrezia de' Medici is a fast and interesting read, sometimes it is safer to be a peasant.

    • @billruttenberg
      @billruttenberg  6 місяців тому +1

Yep! I am a Missouri boy too. I have taken several trips to the Truman Library and I always love it. It sounds like you have several books going at once like I do. Do you ever confuse the stories? I am pretty good at keeping things straight, but I always get that question.
So do you try to read all of the Pulitzer Prize winners? I want to do that someday for the biography and history winners. There are usually some great titles.
Thanks for watching. Have a great week.

@@billruttenberg I had to look up the Pulitzer Prizes and I have read most ot them but more for being popular and collectible rather than a plan to read Pulitzer Prize winners and finalists. A few years ago I fell into the habit of keeping several reads going at once, whether or not a good idea. It is helpful when one bogs down or angers me and I get back to it eventually.

Truman is soooo tempting - it might be my March of the Mammoths pick. Right now, I'm really enjoying all the books I'm reading: Moby Dick, Wolf Hall, The Rise and Reign of the Mammals by Steve Brusatte, and I, Claudius by Robert Graves. Happy reading!

I highly recommend reading Nathaniel Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea before reading Moby Dick. It's given me a ton of context about the time, people, geography, and history of the area. But you might be better informed because of your profession. You'll love Brusatte's Dino book! It's wonderful!! And I think you're right about Truman but Grant is very tempting also. @@billruttenberg you can’t do much better than Dorothy Dunnett. She has two series, the Lymond Chronicles set in the mid 1500’s, 1547-1557 and the Niccolo series, starting in 1460. Lymond is Scottish and Niccolo is Flemish and starts in Bruges. They both travel the world. From Russia (Lymond) to Africa (Niccolo).
