  • Good morning BookTube! HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY in America!!
I wanted to give some book recommendations or book ideas for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. Peg @ the History Shelf and myself are hosting a celebration of our soldiers and their great accomplishment in taking back Europe. We are buddy reading along with Bryan M.R. the book D-Day by Stephen Ambrose. I hope some of these recommendations make your TBR list. Thank you for watching. Have a great 4th of July!

I just read The Longest Day and found it riveting. I had never read anything about D-Day before. I definitely want to read more about it. I also just watched both of Reagan's speeches on D-Day. The Rangers at Pointe Du Hoc were extremely brave and what they did was amazing, though I think that the guns were actually never emplaced there, making their mission not as important as they or the generals thought it would be. They took an insane amount of casualties and were not relieved for two days.

Yeah, D-Day was intense. I have been reading about personal accounts of the battle in the Ambrose book over D-Day and it is crazy what they went through and even crazier that they were able to survive the battle. Extreme courage and bravery. I have never read The Longest Day. I need to. I know I have seen some of the movie, but not sure that I have seen the whole thing. And I was young. It is due for a rewatch. I just told my wife that I was about to get out some of my WWII movies. I was thinking about Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. Both are good. I need to go and watch those speeches by Reagan before I read that book I got. Should be interesting. Thanks for watching. Have a great weekend.

Those all look great! I haven’t read anything on D-Day yet, but I do plan to read Ambrose’s Band of Brothers in Q4. 🇺🇸

Band of Brothers was a good one. Be sure to watch the HBO miniseries that goes with it. They did a phenomenal job creating the series. Also, The Pacific, another great miniseries. I look forward to hearing what you think of the book.
Thanks for watching. Have a great weekend.

Had been reading and about to kick back in, Victor Davis Hanson’s “The Second World Wars” so a little WWII reading still in progress. Can’t wait to hear you guys’ buddy read review.
Also Rudder from Pointe De Hoc is a huge hero and well known name still at Texas A&M with a building named after him, statue, a local high school in Bryan named after him, etc….

INteresting. That is going to lead to some internet searches. You find out bits and pieces like that and it leads to a lot of rabbit trails in a person's research. I hope your books is good. Thanks for watching. Have a great weekend.

Yep, the Ambrose project has been fun. We'll have to start making early plans for the centennial. 😜 I'd say we'll all be decrepit by then, but compared to many of our current politicians, it'll be more like life is just getting started! 😂
I picked up a couple of the titles Peg showed off, but I don't think I have any of these except Pegasus Bridge. I'll keep them in mind, particularly The First Wave. Do you have "Overlord" by Max Hastings? I'm now interested in digging more deeply into what followed "Neptune," and I thought that book looked as good a place as any to start.
Thanks for the video, and have a good one!

Thanks Bryan. This project of ours has been an educational experience. I will have to look to see if I have Overlord by Hastings. I have a handful of his books, but I am not sure about that one. You will enjoy the First Wave. It was a fast paced read and gave lots of details about the soldiers ... a lot like the last couple of chapters we have read in D-Day.
Thanks for watching. Have a great weekend.
