    300,000 shoppers per year can't be wrong, right? The 2021 Corolla looks great and feels great, but under the hood lives some comparatively outdated engines. Cliff Atiyeh's test car offered the larger, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Was it enough to keep a smile on his face?

      That’s so true! We had a 1996 Toyota Corolla that we bought used. The thing survived two moves across the country and two new student drivers. We had ours for 14 years before reselling it to a man who bought it for his daughter and she presumably used it to make ends meet as a pizza delivery driver and is still doing so. Between cross country moves, the student drivers and it’s new life as pizza delivery I would say our car lived an eventful life and it outlasted several vehicles.

    The same engines are kept because they have proven reliable. Toyota is probably developing some new power trains but they take their time in this to ensure quality. I'm on my second Corolla and they are some of the most worry free cars that you can ask for. Their reliability is probably only rivaled by the Camry, Rav4 and Civic.

      Thank you! For thirty grand, I am more interested in a car that will hold up over the years-even in heavy commuter traffic which beats the hell out of a car engine. That is more important than refinement.

    “Average car“. “Commuter car“. Why do reviewers insist on finding the sportiest trim of a non-sporty car and then b**ch about how it’s not a sporty car? Also, the data doesn’t lie: the Corolla engine is remarkably efficient even in its class. The Corolla engine is also remarkably reliable among ANYBclass. And yet because you don’t the SOUND you tell potential buyers that it’s bad?

      You're right Connor. The problem with professional car reviewers is that they drive very fast cars all the time so their perceptions are skewed. They don't realize that in the real world, we have to follow speed limits and stop for traffic so we don't need powerful race car engines.

    You're being way too picky about the engines. May not be super refined but they're bullet proof and will last a quarter million miles no problem. Plus given the type of car it is just get the SE with that same 2.0 engine and save a pile of money. If you're going to spend upwards of 30K you might as well get a decently optioned Camry.

    • @braetonwilson4296
      @braetonwilson4296 3 роки тому +12

      I agree that he is being too picky about the engines but your line of thinking is also wrong. You think "Why spend so much money on a Corolla when you can buy a Camry instead?" as if a Camry is an upgrade from a Corolla. Camry used to be an upgrade but not anymore.
      These latest 12th gen Corollas have everything you can find in a Camry. Camry is just bigger, not better. I can buy a 2021 Camry XSE with cash but I would much rather buy a 2021 Corolla XSE. Why? I prefer the smaller size of the Corolla. 2021 Corolla size is how big Camry used to be 15-20 years ago and reminds me of my current 2000 Camry. 2021 Camry is just too big and heavy for me. Corolla also looks more attractive and drives smoother too IMO.

      @jeffmorse645 3 роки тому +5

      @@braetonwilson4296 Your preference on size is fine - there's something for everyone in the automotive world, but to say the Camry isn't a upgrade over the Corolla (regardless how well optioned) is just wrong. It is and always has been.

      @@jeffmorse645 There's an big American automotive review channel on UA-cam called Raiti's Rides. Joe Raiti in his 2020 Corolla XSE video stated that he prefers the 2020 Corolla over the 2020 Camry because the Corolla rode smoother and was more pleasant to drive. Keep in mind that Joe rode both Corolla and Camry back to back.
      Let's compare base trims since that is the highest selling trim for both cars. 2021 Camry LE comes with a 7 inch touchscreen and manual climate controls. 2021 Corolla LE comes with a 8 inch touchscreen and automatic climate controls. I can keep going but you get my point. Camry is no Lexus and is definitely NOT an upgrade over Corolla.

This way they can always excuse there uncompetitive products as being more reliable than the competition. Toyota buyers don't shop for a new car, they just go to a Toyota dealership and gets whats new. The lack of shopping means they don't know about what is being offered by the competitors. I wanted to buy a Corolla, but the Apex is worse than the standard Corolla in every way. The manual helps a lot but I can't turn a blind eye to a $26k Honda Civic SI with LSD and some go. $30k for that huge shiny black plastic bezel of the Rolla interior just doesn't cut it. Whew! $30k for a Corolla. Yes, that may be what's on the Monroney (MSRP) sticker, but it hard to imagine that anyone actually pays that for a Corolla, even an XSE, if for no other reason than the competition is less, often much less. And then there's the fact that the SE version -- which is essentially the same car without a navigation package -- has an MSRP of $24k, and it's typically discounted $2k just for walking in the showroom. At that price it's an excellent buy for a car with a sterling reputation. No, the owner won't be be bringing home any autocross trophies, but there's enormous satisfaction to be had in knowing your first car -- or even your tenth -- is "dog loyal" and won't ever leave you stranded. That's why Toyota has sold millions upon millions of them.
