@Johannes Terzis Elites can't be revolutionaries? Revolutionaries can't be elites? The example is the founding of the United States. Many supporters of the American Revolution were elites. Much of it began over taxation and no representation for the British citizens living in the Colonies.

Been listening to Eric for a while, and i think the progression has gone as follows. He started with original ideas and tested the water with them having discussions and thinking them through. Then he stopped having discussions and started lecturing people. Now i see someone ask him a question he either changes the question, runs circles around the question, or focus on a minute detail of the question or topic until nobodies knows what his point was supposed to be.
I think it depends on the platform and the one asking questions. Is he controlling the conversation or is the host? But it is definitely less questioning or more lecturing, though this may also be a culmination of seeing thought processes come to fruition, or seeing them come to life all around us!
Yes, indeed. You are right; Eric never gets to a point, or can never make a point.
there is some truth here
Facts he always ends of sounding like some kind of philosopher now
I agree, absolute nonsense from one end to the other
I can never fully tell if Eric is smart. I understand him when he speaks. But judging from his ego it certainly feels like he thinks what he’s saying is far more profound than it actually is. Especially when he mentioned not needing to break it down. He’s the smartest person I’ve ever seen also suffer from the Dunning Kruger effect.
My thoughts exactly. My experience has been that the smartest of us are the quietest because they are aware of so much more that we do not know.
Yeah, nearly ten minutes into the podcast and very little said but many elitist opinions spoken... Boring.
Must be him. Couldn’t be you 🙄
One thing he’s surprisingly well educated on is conspiracy stuff. It’s been really fun to see him put reporters in their place on the Jeffrey Epstein topic.
He thinks that because he's a physicist that makes him de facto "smart." But there is no one "smart." Just because Weinstein knows theoretical physics doesn't mean his metaphors about politics have any particular value. But again, he thinks it does. Probably because that's been reinforced by the culture around him his whole life. We in america like to believe in the myth of a single underlying intelligence which you either got or you don't because it helps us to conflate class mobility (however minimal) with true meritocracy. The successful are successful "because they're smart."
I want to like Eric but he always talks in circles and answers every question with a bad analogy that ends up not going anywhere in the end.
The trick is to stop wanting to like him

@@captain_malaria Seems to me it's got less to do with intelligence and more to do with patience. His analogy has been explained several times now, but some rude observers would rather keep heaping on abusive language from a place of willful ignorance instead of striving to fairly comprehend what another person was arguing logically. The knee-jerk presumption that an intelligent person was making a stupidly shallow argument is hardly a sign of studious clarity -- it comes off as feigning to be a little simple in order to gang up on a perceived weaker target socially (no matter how ridiculous the context, like random people relying on emotional attacks against an identifiable public persona of some intellectual fame). If you have an objection to what he said, articulate it charitably and logically, then present your counterargument to refute it. The internet isn't for bullying, simplistic, 'majority posts rule' discourse. All I see in this comment section is, "I don't get it! Eric Weinstein must be stupid!" “There’s a huge amount of talent in the world not sitting in the right seats” I LOVE that quote because POLITICS is the NUMBER ONE obstruction to that quote on BECOMING reality !!! Namely POLITICS is 99 % EMOTION and 1% POLICY !!! THAT is why for the MOST of society you CANNOT get that TALENTED in those "right seats" Ask ANYBODY WHEREVER they work at doesn't matter to name a situation in which office/work politics gets in the way of the RIGHT people filling in the RIGHT positions of that said workplace. You can get stories for centuries !!! WHY ??? Because people are sadly (mostly) driven by EMOTION rather then being analytical about the " talent in the world not sitting in the right seats" . They are driven by what is best for THEM and NOT the collective body !!! In the corporate world you see this ALL THE TIME !!! With certain last NAMES being on the top of EVERY corporate food chain Are they the ABSOLUTE best in what that do ??? In MOST cases NO WAY !!! Does the corporate world REALLY care ? NO !!! That is because they do NOT care about actual talent they care about MAINTAINING the status quo ! Which is an "emotional" function .
May I add that morals, or better, a lack thereof, also play a role in politics and chain of command for the most part? I mean, the only species to overcomplicate shit is the human species. Too many laws, regulations, and bc of this too few freedoms. Let a free market really be free, and everyone wins. But, we need to eliminate the elite class first. That's what EVERYONE should be doing.
@Anzu Wyliei care to elaborate??
@Anzu Wyliei whatever man. Whatever
@@bitario723 If I could take a shot, because a nice UA-cam discussion (not to be read as "debate") might help with my election anxiety...
I would primarily object to "Too many laws, regulations, and bc of this too few freedoms." I think the freedoms of most people are limited primarily by economic and geographic realities. You say "Let a free market really be free, and everyone wins." and "eliminate the elite class first," but I would argue that those who run the markets are in fact the elite class in that capitalism tends to centralize power into a small few who dictate the means of production. If you mean in more in the anarchistic libertarian/socialist sense (and not ancap?), then I think such an argument could be made. Personally, I think the revolution would have to be everywhere, all at once, and with great strength and even then, figuring out how to prevent cooption from fascist, totalitarian, and authoritarian regimes like has happened with most anarchist/communist uprisings in the past might be impossible except on very small scales.
Going back to the laws bit, as they pertain to markets, I just think the situation is much more complicated than all that. American history has shown, multiple times, how the unchecked concentration of power can create a snowball effect where one party can become too powerful which then allows them to acquire more power exponentially. They become too able to take ownership of resources and dictate how they are distributed throughout society. The oil barons, railroads, and modern tech giants are all examples. Regulations are the only way for the general society to express any level of control over the use and distribution of these resources. Under the current legal system and overly verbose legalese, they can be overly restrictive, unintentionally restrictive, or often even under-restrictive. There are many behaviors that perhaps should be more regulated, particularly in relation to pollution and carbon emissions, and perhaps areas where too much exists. But it's not a matter of too many or few laws, but what laws and how well they work.
Even in an anarcho-libertarian or ancap society, I fail to see how such things could be adequately prevented without some government, for all its evils, with the authority to exercise some form of coercive control over such entities. The challenge is not to get rid of the elites, it's to make the elites work for the people rather than making the people work for the elites. (Okay, my conclusion is also reductionist and need of improvement, but I'll leave it for now.)
@@soc3836 yes, I mean it from a libertarian sense, with small, limited government, based on morals. Now, I know not everyone has morals, but those that don't would be tried for treason/crime, whatever, and sent to prison. It would be the best scenario, not perfect, as nothing is perfect, but better than this...

This is about social mood. The last time I remember it like this was around the uncertainty of the '70s when the boomers were young. The issues were different but the mood was the same. Wars don't randomly happen. They happen out of ignorance and generally a scapegoat. When times get tough and you have a major change in ideology people do not know how to internalize it. They want some sort of predictability and cannot find it. For a very long time, the US has had a monopoly on things. They have got very used to having the best of the best. The only problem with that is it disregards the feelings of the rest of the world. It blinds one to the lifestyles that most of the world is forced to live by. You begin to take it for granted. Then challenges occur. The predictable becomes unpredictable and what was once thought of as "entitlement" is no longer something that people can rely on. This started many years ago and is the culmination of allowing the worst of the worst to rise to the top. It is not an accident but rather brought on by complacency. Change is inevitable but it is how we deal with it that determines the sort of outcome that occurs. I don't think a civil war is due but perhaps a global one where the country's right to supremacy is. Time will tell.

Never liked him, something is fishy with this one.
I think of him in the context of scientist working on a novel problem. The majority of them are very intelligent, and almost all of the theories they create are wrong.
Kind of a confusing clip, but I think what Eric was trying to say to answers Lex's first question is that conflict, whether it be a civil war or a revolution, is inevitable because for so long people with great talent and good intentions have been sidelined by those who aren't as talented and abuse their power, and to a growing amount of people it feels like the only way things can change is through force, not discussion or compromise. And the problem with that is once you refuse to talk about issues, love and unity disappears.

The denial of the existence of evil allows it to flourish and I keep seeing real evil in people who deny its existence (even as a concept) so I love hearing these guys talk about evil because although I feel smarter than those who deny the evil they do by discounting its existence but I have too much self doubt.
But these two are leagues ahead of most of us in intelligence and so it gives me comfort to hear them speak of these truths as it confirms that I’m on the right side.
In my very humble opinion....No “civil war” as long as police are allowed to do their jobs... When police are told to stand down, and to let criminal trash steal/vandalize/destroy whatever they want, that’s when others will be forced to organize and protect their communities..
Thats a very simplistic way of looking at things. Cops can be the ones urging the "stand down" so they can become the artificial hero who restores peace and all must bend the knee afterwards. Uprising has occurred because of unjust social policing *breana taylor*. Imo id rather live in a society that smacks its own government in the mouth when it gets out of line than a society falls in line,
@@anarchy4l654 Oh....Well, George Floyd is one thing.. but if you still believe Breonna Taylor was just an innocent EMT minding her own business sleeping...that career criminal Jacob Blake didn’t have an active warrant out/stolen car/violently fought with cops and tried to grab a weapon, or that stealing an officers stun gun and aiming it at him shouldn’t get you shot bla bla bla... Then we have nothing to talk about. Sorry, but I haven’t seen the alleged “epidemic of police brutality against innocent unarmed black men”. But I have seen an epidemic of people constantly resisting arrest...
Sometimes i think academics can take a simple topic, and make it so convoluted that the question is never answered...
I’ve done violence with a spoon...last nights ice cream binge Thanks Eric the guilt is gone..The ice cream wants the violence against itself
Does this make Ben and Jerry the modern day Hitler of ice cream? We stand by while the ice cream genocide goes on. They came for the ice cream and frozen yogurt stayed quiet, now who comes to rescue them?
It was asking for it.
I think what Eric was saying is that the intellectuals need to take the lead and take control. The politicians are either too corrupt or not up to the task of running the country.
Lex, you’re quickly becoming my favorite podcaster
A lot of people are saying that Eric talks in circles and doesn't answer questions, but to me he answered very clearly and succinctly. Lex asked him, "How do we let love win out in the end?" and Eric very clearly says, "You're gonna have to fight for it. You're going to have to become a fighter." Before that he disagreed with the statement that history repeats itself and alluded to Mark Twain's take on history. Why are people confused about this?
Are we headed toward a civil war?
We've been experiencing one never before experienced for the last four years and that's why it's hard for people to see that we're already there. Now the next four years-especially depending on the outcome of the election-will determine just how bad this *new civil war* is.
1 2 3 4 I want to hear a little more .... of this conversation, I felt like it had just gotten started when they started talking about people sitting in the wrong seat. I've been looking for mine and I have no idea where it is.
I can't stand it when Eric blatantly makes things more difficult to understand for sake of his own intelligence. As if anybody cares
To me, Eric Weinstein seems like an intellectual who more adeptly dodges questions and obfuscates the possible answers than one who directly responds to difficult assertions.
1st UA-cam video where I felt like I was back in high school
dude, i am in high school: this feels like i'm already in a classroom while i fall asleep. was the question even answered?
Eric Weinstein personifies psudo-intellectual advanced pack.
...🐀 pac!
Eric Weinstein: "History doesn't repeat itself it rhymes."
Also Eric Weinstein: "If it rhymes, it's wrong."
Therefore by the Transitive Property of Dumb Eric Weinstein Metaphors: *History is wrong.* 😲
Well, he's right.
Only if you can't tell the difference between using the term 'rhyme' to mean 'similarity' and using the word 'rhyme' to mean 'unthinking political radicalism'. Words are symbols, not kernels.
Well done my friend
Stupid gullible can't see that his a Zionist shill only, the same ones who are pushing civil war. But ok
We never had a first Civil war. We did have a war of Northern Aggression
Now we know how Eric feels about thumb wars, too.
Listening to this 8 months after January 6th, he was absolutely on the money.
Jesus will walk beside you and never leave your side. Seek Him. Hear Him.
To those who are saying that Eric is coming off as arrogant.. You should listen to the entire podcast! They talked about humility and pride at one point, and you see that Eric knows that there is a fine line between the two and he walks it everyday. It's something we all deal with. Do not entirely dismay him; instead, think about what others would say about you if you were in his position. To those complaining about his "arrogance": Do you really have that much dominion over your own pride that you feel qualified enough to call someone out on the mismanagement of their own? Did you ever consider that maybe your own complaints are coming from a place of arrogance as well?
I really didn't like the way he delivered that sentiment. I could appreciate it if it were a matter of talent not being appreciated and lack of opportunity causing those seats to be vacant, or filled by less talented folk, but to suggest a talent should dictate your life's direction regardless of your passion for that talent, is very a arrogant statement.
None of us know the "right" way to live life, no matter how smart we are, so to suggest talent is the deciding factor in one's life-direction is no more valid than using any other metric.
This is a bad marriage. There is no hope of a reconciliation. Zero.
"Do you think there will be an Eric Weinstein?"
"That depends on what you mean by "Eric Weinstein!"
Please invite another intellectual Mr Peter Zeihan. I really respect Eric and watch this gentlemen also. Peter (to me) calms me down about the future as we wade through the great changes. Lots of UA-cams over last 10 years from him.
Question? Do others see the passive aggressive and direct aggression in their own communities?
@@cesarperez10 I'm too dumb for this podcast haha
I so like listening to Lex and Eric Weinstein, Lex is so ‘sweet’ and Eric is so ‘out there’
Yeah, it would really be terrible if there was some real violence starting at some point. 🤔
Lex. It's too late.
Lex if I had to nominate a person to appear on your podcast it would undoubtedly be British politician currently teaching at Yale, Rory Stewart. His biography is truly remarkable (unlike any politician) - Orlando Bloom was to play him in a movie at the behest of Brad Pitt - and for many of us here in the uk he represents/(ed) the possibility of a new dawn in politics. There are undoubtedly deep similarities between you both - an authenticity and a deep sense of responsibility to use your remarkable talents for the betterment of mankind. His life experience and political insight would be a wonderful and unique addition to the very broad spectrum your interviews.
I think Eric Weinstein could improve his communication skills
As a airborne infantry veteran of two wars i wouldnt put either one of these goofballs in charge of even a 3 man fire team. These two wouldnt even make good waterboys.
If you’re so smart you should be able to actually answer a question with an answer. Not do verbal gymnastics and literally say NOTHING that had to do with the question.
The ability to listen to conversation between educated articulate people is the best accpect of the internet.
Inevitable.
You guys discuss what's happening currently, I might be missing it but I'd love to see more on where should we go from here. What is your version of democracy where it doesn't need to be adjusted anymore because its flaws are minimal? If democracy is even the best choice of government.
just how fanciful do we need to get guys? i know eric loves to hear himself go, but jeez
“I speak nuance.” I understand. The incessant compulsion to identify what is good and what is bad is eating away at critical thinking. We need to actively suppress it in ourselves as it is being artificially supported by the way we take in stimulus(tv,internet,etc...). We need to stop feeding our own ego trips. We are addicts to that wonderful feeling of thinking we are on the right side of a thought, its like sugar on the teeth of our minds.
I see in Mr. Weinstien the need to deconstruct/dumb down for us. He is doing so appropriately. We need to change, not him. Learn to speak nuance.
In order for there to be a Civil War, you would need two opposing forces. The US Military, US Police, US Militia Units, and all of the gun owning patriots are on the Right... Who does the Left have lol? ANTIFA and gang bangers? Sorry but there is no chance for Civil War, the Left doesn't have an army lol.
Very good point
People take 'Civil War' far too seriously, I think. it's not how it theoretically might happen, because there is no clear defining line between 'us' versus 'them'. In a twisted way, it's like Vietnam war, where you could not distinguish 'them' from 'them who are the enemy' - it might be a guerilla war sponsored by the state against it's own citizens. It might lead to a civil war between the states later on, but not in the beginning.
@@heinrichagrippa1259 My brother, there is no chance that the Left can wage ANY kind of conflict against us. I live in NJ, a blue state, and my entire neighborhood is armed.to the teeth. Americans will not tolerate it. We already scared all the gang bangers out of our neighborhood. ANTIFA ran in fear when they tried rioting in our county. And the police and military are all with us.
The Left is already raising the notion of bringing in the U.N. They also have a bunch of intelligence defectors who’ve changed parties during the Trump administration. Lastly, they have the control of information via the tech oligarchs. Don’t underestimate these people.
@@Garrus1995 I am part of the Military/Police. I promise you, we have all sworn oaths to defend the constitution. And it's quite obvious that the Left wants to destroy the Constitution. We all know it. We all talk about it. We will never follow unconstitutional orders. Rest easy bud.
There needs to be a podcast where Joe's guest interview each other
Eric believes his own hype now.
From the moment Eric said "imagine you are coding up violence as an abstract class" I was on the floor laughing! My dudes have no idea of what they are talking about.
Mango lives matter
Tears of fear jumped to my eyes when he asked "do you think we're heading towards some kind of civil war?"
@@jimmiferfreddette8583 Well, I'd technically be close to classical liberal with a dash of libertarian, so I definitely align myself with "Trumpers". But I still don't want a civil war and I could echo my feelings in his voice when he asked the question
lex sounds likes he's on the fringe of nearly having an accent constantly
I worry about his naive "love" obsession.
Lex Fridman asked a real question and Eric answered with deconstruction violence, the Gatekeep is real.
You mad, bro? Lol
Eric is the sort of guy that takes 3 hours to decide which restaurant to go to when there is only 1 restaurant available
You two have to come down out of the clouds.
I love watching these podcast and the challenging thoughts they provoke in me..... but I couldn’t help but get lost in both of your hairstyles. Wild, off the grid hair, especially your guest on this episode
You should talk with/interview Chris Hedges Lex. He’s comparing this current time in the US to the collapse of Yugoslavia.
Lex wears his heart on his sleeve, nice to see a genuine guy trying to make sense of the madness presently in this world.
Not sure about Eric he seems to get sort of sidetracked into semantics.
Nevertheless a good conversation.
