Lex man, I hate to agree with Eric at 2:03:22, but he's not the only person to have really spoken about this. Jordan Peterson covers it as well in one of his biblical lectures. It goes something like this, "There are two permanent existential threats to humanity. Nature is the obvious one, and the second goes to organizations that grow too large, too unyielding, and too willfully blind to be incapable of being incorruptibly managed." -- Personally, I believe that there is a third existential threat now, with the harnessing of the Atom. However, if an extinction level event happened, and wiped out MOST of humanity, then that threat could potentially disappear, so it's not technically 'permanent'. This is EXACTLY why Joe Rogan's podcast is having episodes taken down, it's why Jack Dorsey is having things happen in his company that he doesn't even agree with.
Lex, I know you're somewhere lurking in the comments here, so let me just take a moment to express gratitude for bringing us conversations like these - they're a pleasure to listen to in addition to being immensely important. This one in particular perfectly captures the need to be both ingenious and ingenuous as we move forward. Again Lex, thank you and keep it up.
Seconded! And the comments on the comment before me. Lex (and Joe) voices of reason in the time we need it most. Please keep up the work you are doing. Please continue to do what you are doing. It is highly appreciated!
@@ReinierFosch feels great listening with like minded people these interviews are fantastic, finally realised I’m not depressed my thoughts are totally normal here 😂
@Lake Kelley sorry, Eric is smarter than Bret. They acknowledge that all the time. Check out the chat they did together in their backyard; it’s mostly Eric trying to drag Bret through a simplified version of geometric unity physics and Bret has an extremely tough time. Meanwhile, Eric follows along with all of Bret’s biology stuff and then some.
Smarter? As an X'er, his lack of general knowledge and life experience is evident. I highly doubt either would survive 2 days, dropping them in a rural area in North Queensland in the middle of summer, with a flat tyre. I'd give them both 36hrs.
Quite and his struggle with the 'evil ones' is therefor interesting. At 1:03 Lex is addressing the thought of 'cruel human beings' going against the interest of the US, after this election. Probably correct. But they have always been there, we just outsourced their cruelty onto the non-west second and third world trying to maintain economic 'growth' by augmenting the western sphere of influence. In part the west could lead a luxurious live because of these 'evil people' and we should not be so naive and hypocrite towards it. The post 2001 effort to 'change' the islamic world into a western controlled democratic world, more for less failed, so no more growth. Next, the logic reaction of the 'cruel beings' is to destroy the west itself, so that afterwards they can re-start on a new growth trajectory. There is cynical logic in that. We can only hope the goal of the evil ones is not post-reset Marxism, but it appears it is their path...thats not in their self- interest, so the evil ones need to re-evaluate their post-resest thoughts, stop the current madness and find another way to build an economy which does require 1) honesty about all unfunded liabilities (pensions) and 2) abolish the need for relentless growth by tweaking future economic setup (no more government bonds, only expansion of a flexible quantity of money) and 3) accept and allow China a seat at the table as the biggest economic power. The evil ones can still profit of such a system. I would much prefer to simply be honest and take care of the old and the sick on a local level ourselves for a while. Interesting to see if they choose the path of honesty or self-destruction (blaming it on Covid). Currently we are on the self-destruct COVID hype path....

I almost fucking cried listening to this one. These conversations give me hope and help me realize that me and many other are not alone. I’m not American and I don’t live in the US, I point this out just because I want to acknowledge how far this reaches. Beyond culture, beyond nationalism, beyond age. These ideas and your sincerity is far more revolutionary than you guys realize. I know you see this, I know you see your audience and the power of your platforms but you do not feel what it is to be someone like me listening to you. You WILL spark the minds that will free us all. Thank you.

I have learned so much. Subjects I never even realized I had an interest in. I am a political junky. I am so grateful for your intellect . You are a great man!
I’ve paused this so many times to think... and drag it out. It’s 1:00am here now and I started listening during a walk when I initially got up for the day.
I've only recently discovered Weinstein. His bluntness put me off a little the first time I saw him, but when I started actually paying attention I realized that there's no malice in it. That makes all the difference. I really like him now, and Fridman as well, obviously. Both of them I discovered on Rogan. Say what you want about Rogan, but he has led many of us to brilliant minds like these two guys.
Yep the greatest thing Eric taught me is that it is possible appreciate the character of someone who has a different informed opinion than mine. Still not great at using that skill but atleast I am aware of its existence.
He's a narcissistic liar, not blunt at all. Dude talks about free speech so much because he feels guilty that his boss, peter thiel, used his billions from silicon valley to kill a media outlet that dared discuss him. Weinstein wants to be a philosopher king, but he's a managing director of a Silicon Valley billionaire's company instead
I think you guys should do a continuous joint podcast with guests and stuff. You are yin and yang. You two play off each other well and inspire and provoke deep thought
yeah, maybe every year on some major holiday the two can agree on one guest or two guests and have a deep discussion. i think Fridman should be allowed to loosen up with a glass of wine or two, though.
I really like how Eric is challenging Lex to take a stance, to disagree, to not back down. This is the kind of stuff that makes a podcast interesting to listen to and I wish Lex would be more critical towards his guests more often. As always the questions were well prepared and I hope you can take some of the spice from this conversation and add it to future ones.
I never really listened to Eric before yesterday when I watched him on Chris Williamson's podcast. Now, after having listened to both podcasts, I can't believe that content like this is available for free! Incredible! Thank you Lex
Haha me and you are having the same life experience. I stumbled onto Chris podcast by UA-cam recommending it to me. I was so ENGROSSED im that pod with Eric that I sought out other pods with Eric and found Alex and Eric. It’s alll so awesome to have!!!
Since the beginning of tribes apparently the intelligent and the wise are never the leaders. In almost every country or civilization. Even when the king or queen were completely crazed, people followed them. Even at the risk of world war. What is it in man’s mind that creates a world of followers? Or are we just slightly more evolved than a pack of dogs?
He knows as I do first hand, that there are many cults or special interest groups that only recruit one another and also farm the minds of creative genius without a shred of care or offering credit. Took me a few years to realize that I myself was the target of such a group and even talking about it here will only lead to people calling me crazy or full of it.
Jesus Lex, as a muscian who wakes up every day for music and would probably been gone without music years back, this podcast is already off to a great start. I just woke up at 2:47am and we are having a bad flood from a tropical storm and im up in the dark quietly playing acoustic guitar while yall are talking, giving me cold chills... this podcast has grown to be my favorite thing online in general. I might even use the silly "L word" to describe my affinity for it.

@@cmag8924 I think Eric's reach and reputation means that he's much more likely to piss off powerful people. It's a hazard of his job and he's (properly) taking it seriously. After all, he is the Managing Director of Thiel Capital and is very well connected.
This is Eric Weinstein trying to upload as much of his wisdom as possible into LexAI, so that lex can change the world because Eric believes that lex has more potential than himself.
I see it different! Eric is the type of genius that gives inputs by his ideas and theories and Lex is more like Elon Musk type - a bridge between theories and reality

Live and die on this day." (keep fighting the good fight, Lex)
Ironic, this poetry of war....Odd, the best is brought out in men in acts of destruction and violence ,in combat and mortal struggle.....if only there was such poetry and feeling and heroism involved in service, empathy, love.
hes in danger of falling victim to his own pessimism these days though...sure, lex probably needs to be a bit less of a romantic optimist, but Eric needs to let some of Lex's rosy vision into his life
" We need people we can trust behind closed doors and then we need to close the doors so we can't see what those people are doing." -Eric Weinstein Beautifully stated
Whenever I'm in a dark place I feel I can always come to this channel to redirect my mind away from the negativity. I only wish I had discovered yall sooner.
Lex, I use to work at Fender guitars and Ed’s guitar line (Wolfgang) was manufactured there. I was a tester and had the opportunity to meet Ed once. My hero. We talked and talk about the moments of life and being a musician. I didn’t get a picture because they told us not to ask. I should’ve. The day he died, he is one of the two I wept over (Randy Rhoads is the other) because of how much he inspired me as a guitarist. One of the nicest down to earth rockstars I have ever met. Thank you for this episode! Eric is incredible.

Like Lex, I used to believe that every person has a core of goodness. I spent years trying to find that core in someone, with love, understanding, kindness, acceptance. All I got in return was lies, abuse, neglect and finally the most stressful separation and divorce imaginable. Finally I woke up and learned about narcissism, and other 'personality disorders'. Whether some people are born without the capacity to love, feel empathy or have a conscience, or if early childhood experiences cause this abnormal brain development to occur, I don't know. But the reality is, a minority of people have no core of goodness, many are good a faking it though.
@@ailsaeccles111 If you are stuck in an abusive or narcissistic relationship, check out Richard Grannon, he has several youtube channels which deal with this issue, he also has a web site which offers courses to help people heal from narcissistic abuse. Richard wasn't around when I was learning about personality disorders, most of my early understanding came from the work of Prof. Sam Vaknin. I was born into a narcissistic family, then went on to have a string of abusive relationships. Getting free from my programmed pattern of choosing this for myself has been the only way I've been able to find genuine peace and happiness in my life. Getting free was a rough road though. The key was learning, and then putting into practice what I had learned.

I loved that! Sometimes I feel that Eric's rebuttal style is harsh. I guess, by some definition, it is, but his response to that response was great. Consider news media. Why do they report on suffering... Yet never SHOW the violence and butchery? Are we children, can we simply not handle horror or is it not good taste? Who determines that? One argument is to protect children's innocence... But I don't know about you nobody protects children from pedophiles, and how many women are underage and on OnlyFans? The answer you must then come to is that it isn't done for our benefit. Something weinstein said struck me today from episode two, he said, we are being prevented from experiencing reality, the outrage the anger, the courage that dealing with those emotions does to a man/woman, and the growth... We are being prevented from getting uppity, and riotious to maintain the public order that would be natural should we be allowed to see the horror our foreign policy does overseas. It all depends on which conspiracy theories people believe in. I do believe that some conspiracy theories are not all theories, but I do believe there are people that are falsely led to believe or hired into spreading false ridiculous conspiracy theories which in turn give bad names to the real investigators that uncover the true horror of society above, inside and below the ranks of hierarchy.
@@vladwake5176 That's because there are Many Theories of Conspiracy Theories and they are all propagated. This is strategic. Tbh eric tends to nit dumb down anything for anyone, whether on jre, rubins report, or his interwied with ted cruz He has in the past actively bashed people who dumb down their explanations
Thats why he keeps talking about 'leaving the audeience behind' what he means is people who cant follow what they are saying, so he will leave them behind, as to not explain himself in a dumbed down way
Weinstein doesn't fully respect Lex. He repeatedly made several comments about Lex being a child. He made another comment disparaging Lex's intellect when Lex questioned whether there was a conspiracy behind the whole Jeffrey Epstein saga. Now I happen to agree with Weinstein that there's a conspiracy behind Epstein. But the tactful way to do it, is to explain WHY he believes there was a conspiracy (as he later does). No need for the "I thought you were smart" flippant response to initial pushback there. Most ppl simply haven't dug that deep behind the onion layers on that story as Weinstein has.

He does love to hear himself talk. From my experience, if you cannot explain something in lay terms, you do not know it well enough. That’s how I feel about Eric. Also, I’m not sure he is right most of the time because he, as you say, always leaves you hanging.

Wise turtle Kung fu panda :) My fav person to listen too. Thanks Lex for inviting him again. And yo guys are ending with gratitude.
Next time you speak to him, can you ask him about the Wolfram Project?
Lex, you’ve done a few great round 2 & 3 interviews recently. Would you consider interviewing Joscha Bach again?
@Reckless Abandon wow thank you so much for sharing such beauty, that I would never have stumbled upon. Thank you
Lex, I know you're somewhere lurking in the comments here, so let me just take a moment to express gratitude for bringing us conversations like these - they're a pleasure to listen to in addition to being immensely important. This one in particular perfectly captures the need to be both ingenious and ingenuous as we move forward. Again Lex, thank you and keep it up.
"both ingenious and ingenuous" that's very clever...very true
Seconded! And the comments on the comment before me.
Lex (and Joe) voices of reason in the time we need it most. Please keep up the work you are doing. Please continue to do what you are doing.

I needed to hear this. Sorry to hear you struggled with it too, I'm there currently.

I am a 37 year old mental health nurse and I love listening to your podcasts
I can't express how much insight I got in listening to this conversation. Thankyou both so much 💜
A conversation like this gives me hope when I listen to our politicians and media I become depressed about the future.
maybe the media can do a 180 and acclimate to something off the cuff.
That's the idea
Just now the domestic policy of how police treat the minorities and unfortunate is being made clear. It can't be hidden.
@@georgesoros2544 so what are you doing personally to make a positive impact?
@@georgesoros2544 And exactly what good has showing police treatment of blacks done to correct our situation~? Not much I can tell. I guess there may be hope springing eternal, yet, I do not see it. I think our country is either too big to be governed by one admin or we need to elect a number of Senators in the Congress as proportioned to the numbers of people in their states, fix gerrymandering, repeal Citizens United, rid ourselves of lobbyist, take money out of politics, and rid the Electoral College, shorten career memberships in Congress, end the filibuster, fix the Supreme Court, and, and, and.... These are starts. Good luck, millennials, and & all people under 40.
"I remember my old mind. I liked it better"
Thank you.
That is the first time I have ever heard so succinctly articulated something that has nagged me for decades . I too remember and hope I never forget. I remember when I expected the world to get better. It flavours your world view in a way it is difficult to explain to anyone who has not lived that experience.
It didn't mean that I didn't think there was bad stuff going down. Of course there was. But that expectation would always return to looking for the positive rather than the negative. All I can do now is try and help my children and grandshildren deal with this Brave New World rolling out before our eyes, and hope that we do dodge the bullet racing towards us from the gun we have fired...
Lex's naivety is both his greatest strength and biggest blindspot. "They can't silence you." Tell that to Jeffrey Epstein.
Hell, tell that to MLK. And thank god they he lasted as long as he did.
I was looking for someone who already made this comment so I could upvote it so that Lex might get it...
Tell that to JFK, RFK, MLK Jr, John Lennon, Seal Team 6, Andrew Breitbart, Edward Snow...the list is long, both past and present. Both heroes and villains have been silenced, male and female, young and old, friend and foe alike. Anyone who gets in front of the corrupt system’s speeding locomotive. It is unbearably naive to believe conspiracies don’t exist. Any detective worth his/her salt could share endless cases of human tendencies toward conspiring to commit crimes. Conspiracy is a scalable skill, used for good or evil. Unfortunately, mostly evil. And the good win far less often than the fairytales suggest.
Tell that to The New York Post.
Lisa LPH - Exactly.
Sir, this is my emotional support podcast.
Thanks Lex Fridman for these talks with Eric Weinstein, who is pure in thought and deep in spirit and a total inspiration !!!
The Weinstein Brothers are both so interesting and actually helped me be a better human being.
Lex, I'm so grateful for your courage and intellect. Thank you for giving us these podcasts. You enlighten my world.
Man, it's sad that Eddie died, but I'm glad there are still people out there that are continuing to advance guitar like Yvette Young, Tosin Abasi, and Tim Henson.
Yvette is great, thanks for introducing her to me in your comment!

... the one thing that these "Self Deletions" have in common, is that these people went so very deep into the darkness... Alone. Alone seems to be one of the defining factors which lead each into a pit of Hopelessness and Angst, deep enough to lose their way. This is easy to see, in hindsight, that running the same abstract Thoughts and Fears around in the same head has no choice but to arrive at the conclusion that Ending the Nightmare, permanently, is the only way out. When Alone, the thinking Mind is an Awesome Servant, but a lousy Master.
I Love you and your Podcast, Lex and I really appreciate you having Eric Weinstein on your channel. Eric is such a thoughtful, Dynamic & Experienced gentleman, you both had 100% of my attention, the entire time. Thank You. Keep Smiling... Cheers...
"To not believe in conspiracies is an idiocy." This is true. Thank you Eric Weinstein.
The theories that best align with the person's potential will be the one that sticks. And when we are smart, we know that some are ludicrous. If we are not smart enough, then we assume what we disbelief is entitled to the fake news crown of Conspiracy theories and throw the baby out with the bathwater. When this happens, the TRUTH (the baby) sneeks back in under our nose and we lose the plot. Plots exist. They are all around us.
Conspiracies EXIST. Yes, and to protect them, many imposters are released and crawl the thought channels looking for a path to exist.
If you research the history of the word Conspiracy, it used to be a recognized mutually understood occurrence. The kings and emperors played mind games on their sources of labor and resource gain, and it was well known to happen. After all, most of the people in that position seem to be inbred and self-proclaimed deities.

Eric and Lex's dynamic through this is so reminiscent of an older brother watching his younger brother 2 weeks away from getting his heart broken by his first love.
The most brilliant explanation I've ever heard,
On the song by Leonard Cohen Hallelujah.

Dope. You've had Eric Weinstein, and Stephen Wolfram. Add Dr. Brian Keating, Sabine Hossenfelder, and you will have the four out of five people Ive been watching a lot during this Pandemic.

Not that hard. David Byrne did that a while ago ua-cam.com/video/dE-mxVxFXLg/v-deo.html
Other than DB...Lex seems like someone who COULD interview himself, heck he could even to bilingually!
I've been following Dr. H for about 18 months or so. She's unique. I'm a follower of Daniel Schmachtenberger's thinking. IMO a genius polymath.
Such a great episode. Thanks Lex and Eric. I spend a lot of my time on my own bored, you guys keep me stimulated with a smile on my face.
I see Eric better now. He respects Lex and so he is able to freely express himself without having to dumb down his delivery
Tbh eric tends to nit dumb down anything for anyone, whether on jre, rubins report, or his interwied with ted cruz
He has in the past actively bashed people who dumb down their explanations
@@LowieX I understand what you all are saying. I’ve only watched and heard him on jre and it seems his responses always went in circles. He is known as the guy who says a whole lot about nothing. With Lex, I heard clear, intelligent responses
I love listening to these two but why is Eric so disrespectful

Humble as ever, Lex. Normally, I'd say that this remark doesn't bode well, but I can't imagine these two not having an interesting conversation.

That's a promise that can't not come true
No, you won't.
Eric talks in such a way to where it sounds like he’s constantly on the cutting edge of saying something profound. Pretty fun to listen to but leaves you blue-balled sometimes. Nevertheless it’s generally good content
I find it funny, i've heard him more than once, wonder why he's not more popular, but then mention he's unconcerned with popularity ... i mean he could be speculating, but .... catch 20? ( or whatever phrase) .... he does talk , more than needed, and, frankly, Jordan Peterson had more to say and, to me, had less of his ego involved...., id have to say, thats probably the biggest turn off Eric has, his hard hitting self proclaiming, assured he's correct and stating that, instead of continuing to back the point
He does love to hear himself talk. From my experience, if you cannot explain something in lay terms, you do not know it well enough. That’s how I feel about Eric. Also, I’m not sure he is right most of the time because he, as you say, always leaves you hanging.
Weird. I find him quite relatable. At a guess, perhaps he has an aversion to telling people what to think. But it depends on the example I guess.
You guys are some deep thinkers... i love it 🥰
@@fattyjaybird7505 Everyone has an ego, some are better than others at making it known. Eric certainly has very specific views on subjects, but are clearly sharing from opinion.
