Currently on a cruise ship heading back to our mainland. Approximately 1500 men on board, the cruiseline attempt to extort dough at every stop through family photographs etc, they dont seem to realise a good percentage of those males would gladly pay a few bucks to tour the bridge and the engine room.
interesting vid but the camera work was too quick for the camera,, I could have appreciated the detail of these engines if you panned your camera slowly then you would not get the blurred vision, apart from that, thank you
Each was three decks high. They were located in different parts of the ship. All motors running full throttle moved the ship 15 knots and the ship shook and rattled with vibration. At eight knots all was fairly quiet
When I was on the Carnival Splendor in March 2018, we used deck 0 for getting on and off at visiting ports. I noticed there were staris to take persons below deck 0. Would the engine room be under deck 0? Does the engine room and all of the other equipment take up the entire space of it's deck?
There are a few decks below. Such as A dack B deck C deck. Some ships have more. I sometimes work in water tanks so i can tuch the bottom of the tank, and feel the waves.
One day, i was cleaning the engin room, because we couldnt go into the tanks to clean, the sea was to rough, so I couldnt clean. So, as i was cleaning the engine room, I started to wipe down the buttons, and my stomach hit one of the buttons, "I didnt even know I did it". And 7 officers came Running down to the room where I was, and they where freaking out. They asked what I pushed.... I was like, "I dont know, I didnt think I pushed anything" Well, I pushed the OFF button and all the engines started shutting down, The ship came to a complet stop. And they had a security video of myself wipping down the dusty buttons, and my stomach hit the off button and they were pissed, lol. And yes, they told my boss, lol. The team and boss had a good laugh about it, because only I fuck shit up like this.

As an Engineering officer aboard a similar vessel, the answer to your question is yes. most cruise ships work the same way now where it will have multiple medium speed diesels like this, that will power big gensets which in turn provide power to the large electric motors in the azipod propulsion systems, some still use direct drives like my vessel where the engines are connected directly to the propshaft via a gearbox :)
The Diesel engine connected to the generator w/c produce electricity, the electricity produce being supplied to the azyymuthing pod(propeller) and to All electrical equiptment aboard the ship, therefore, the diesel engine was not the one directly propelled the ship, but some other ship has a direct propulsion of the Diesel engine to the propeller and that is called direct propulsion.

Fix what? The shaking? I cant fix that, because i was moving fast with my phone, and im not redoing the video, because i wasnt supposed to record that room. It was a fast taping, while i was working. There are cameras everywhere watching the rooms
Donald Ripper you want the man to buy a tripod to take into a ship engine room, while he works, and set up a pro level vid? It’s watchable enough for us to get the picture.
I was working at the time, and had to do a "run around" before the boss found out i wasnt doing my job, lol. I used my cellphone and the entire room was all the engines. I could go back down there after work, they lock the doors, and the room was full of camras...
A great machine room and powerful equipment. Good video.
The video is chaotic , but it shows the power and knowledge of mankind.

Is this an engine city with ship attached ?
Great video. Can tell it’s a pretty big shop since it has 6 DEs

I wonder if it's shaft driven or is it azi pods?
My Navy Ship was a nuc sub tender. It had five diesels each powering a generator that feed a huge electric motor that turned the prop.
Like locomotives?

MAN a prolific maker of diesel generators for ages.

They have kick starters.
They are started by admitting air at a pressure of 30barg into each cylinder
