The company I work for makes the large domes and the bits inside said large domes, on top of the vessel, which in turn supplies your internet and the ships comms onboard
Just to point out the main engines and generators, and in modern ships virtually all of the equipment that requires cooling is cooled by treated fresh water to minimise corrosion. This coolant is then cooled by sea water.
Really cool control room on that ship! A lot of control rooms today can let the engineers know where any balcony door was left open, water was left running, lights left on for too long, etc. They have alarms that can pin point the exact stateroom location to make sure they're not wasting energy and resources
I was on the Rotterdam three times in the last three years. Its an incredible ship with 5 star service. You were extremely lucky to visit the engine room as its off limits to all passengers. The crew member in the engine room looks so young almost just out of school. Its sad that it has been sold.
The Rotterdam was the only R class ship I didn't work on when I was at Holland America Line, but the design is similar to the Amsterdam, Volendam and Zaandam. The Rotterdam and Amsterdam have now been sold to Fred Olsen Lines.
I do not mean this as boastng as I am in the travel industry but have been on 55 cruises. Favorite ship is the Rotterdam. Best cabin stewards ever and that goes for the dining staff also. Beautiful ship, smaller size. Sorry that it is to be sold. Yes, there are a lot of we older people on HAL. You party people can go on the floating amusement parks.
Thats so cool to see the behind the scenes!! And like always the nature/scenery is always my favorite!!!! The horn brought back memories of when i was a little girl and lived in Maryland we lived about 3 miles or so from the C & D canal and lots of barges and tug boats came thro there and on cool autumn mornings we could hear the fog horns!!! If i could sail anywhere it would be a Alaska cruise in the summer in the area yall went on.
We have been on a few cruises through carnival but I think our next one is going to be to try to go to Aruba, and St. Martin. So far the best one we have done is Grand Cayman and Cozumel.
@@itzartros9350 what company? It is a blast. Get ready for a good time. Study up on elevators, pabx/ip phones, power distribution (including ansi code), generator maintenance and your best pickup lines.

Great video James. We have been cruising for many years now and you have done something we always dream of..... seeing the engine room. You were very lucky to have experienced that. 😃 Good to hear you saying ship, rather than boat this time, although you did slip once or twice 😉. Really looking forward to the next video 👌
haha yeah still not sure whats the difference between a ship and a boat!! Seeing the engine rooms was amazing, never knew how big and powerful everything was! If you ever get a chance to see it, do it!
BARBSTER360 It’s mainly due to cargo carrying capacity. Low capacity = boats, high cargo/passengers = ship. Maybe I need to get friendly with the captain next time for a tour of the engines 😄. Looking forward to the next video!
@@BARBSTER360 I know this quite a while ago, but a boat is a small to mid-sized vessel, which has much lesser cargo carrying capability as compared to a ship. Ships are specifically made to carry cargo or passengers or boats, whereas boat is a generic term used for a variety of water crafts. Mainly boats are used for recreational purposes like fishing, water skiing, or ferrying people. Hope that helps! PS: I worl for Holland America and gotta say, this was one of the best review videos out there. nice job!

Hi James and Holly...I've travelled on the Rotterdam, but never seen the engine room or crew's quarters - thanks for the tour! Just one thing: Please 'lose' the dreadful music...the ambient sounds of the ship are enough!
Phones never were 'PC's in your Pocket" where that phrase came from is actually Steve Jobs back in 04 he envisioned both phones and PC's working together where you can switch to either mode so if you want apps you go to phones if you want software you go to PC. The big companies didn't want it that way in 06 they decided phones because they can make more money thru subscriptions and all that crap. Microsoft first,Google and now Apple are all doing it and PC people do NOT like it. There is hardly any software now for PC and hasn't been for a long time though 10 years ago there were LOADS from companies that no longer exist.
Hey James. Fabulous video. Produce more shipping videos and before long you will be rich and famous. But remember, you are a landlubber!!! You are on board a SHIP, not a boat. A car gets parked, but a ship gets moored. Learn ship's terminology and you will do well...
Not quite sure what you are asking, odeneal/green is quite a common colour for engine room machinery. The Alpha SP followed by a number stencilled on various equipment refers to the grade of oil it uses.
@KD 10,good day, almost all cruise ship are of same engine rooms and machineries, they varies only the type of manufacturers of the engine, actually if you mean Main Engine on the cruise ship, you can not find a main engine unlike the cargo ship, let me tell you this,on the large cruise ship like this, there are four to six large engines of the same sizes that's why no main engine, these large engines, connected each one to each generator to produce electricity, the electricity being pruduce, supply the axymuthing pod(propellers,4 propellers if the ship travel) and also supply all the electrical equipments aboard the ship.so no main engine unlike in cargo, there's main engine to propelled the ship only and other smaller engines for generating electricity for ship's use.that's the difference w/the cruise ship and of a cargo ship.
@@bradwendica5737 Slight correction, the Rotterdam has 2 controlled-pitch propellors and 2 stern thrusters. The Amsterdam is the only ship of this class with azipods.
They were sailing The Sound, and you can hear the bow thrusters in the background, which indicates that the ship is turning. The Sound has many creeks, which the Rotterdam with her size can easily access. But in order to get back, the ship will either do a 360, 180 or thrust backwards.
I assume you're referring to the charts showing the pH and chlorine content of the water. I can't remember the exact requirements, but the pH should be close to 7 (which high school chemistry will tell you is neutral pH). The reading on the analyser shows 6.82, so close enough. The other figure on the graph is chlorine content measured in ppm.
