People don't get this scene. She is overwhelmed by her feelings. From the start she's been perfect, not a curl out of place, but when she is hit by feelings and has her character growth, her humanity destroys that fake perfection and you just see a young woman in love who tries to learn from her mistakes. It's beautiful.
Yeah it's alright.
...And a nosebleed...
@@koppe90ko no it's beautiful
Perfect summary of this scene.
Yeah I really loved it. She blows a fuse. It's hilarious and perfect. And Anya ends up a little bloody in every movie, so it fits there as well.
When she says 'then don't speak it!' he's so heartbroken he walks away from her and then you realize it's because he wants to hide his tears. My heart.
I know!!!!! IT makes me melt!!!!
Time stamp?
@@flowerchickenhairsparkle2819 .09 Right at the beginning
@@mariamentis3428 that's not a time stamp because the numbers didn't go blue. A time stamp is 2:47 or 1:26. Not 3:5 or 4:1. I think you mean 0:09?
It's the sweetest thing! I wish we'd see men cry in movies more often
1:54
Emma: "you danced with her"
Mr knightley: "oh 🙄"
I love his reactions an through this scene 😃
I love this movie so bad hahahahhaahha
Mr. Knightley be like 'Oh. Oh, what have I done."
Is that all it takes lol
I can see why Nintendo casted Anya Taylor Joy as Peach, they wanted someone to hit the voice just right for a movie.
"oh 💩 I did a guy thing and didn't pay attention"
'God knows I have been a very indifferent lover.'
WHY CAN'T WE SPEAK LIKE THIS AGAIN
I know! I just watched it and loved the way Jane Fairfax told Emma she was feeling sad: “We all know at times what it is to be wearied in spirits. Mine, I confess, are exhausted”. I said, “Poetry!”
can't forget about the "If I loved you less I might be able to talk about it more"
All you have to do is watch a ton of Jane Austin movies and then you and all your friends mimic the actors speech pattern. Before you know it everyone will be speaking just like the movie.
@@RemyCT63 Finding friends willing to do this is the trouble
@@JadedForAlways Well to be fair, most people during this time period did not speak like the characters do in the movie. Most likely this type of speech was only used amongst the English upper class.
The cutest nosebleed in cinematic history.
@Ssss Ssss That is your opinion. It is terrible and wrong, but I am not going to take it away from you.
@@justsomeguywithsunglasses8418 I am of the opinion it was placed in there to give charge to the scene. I do not think it succeeded.
@@michellegulden1052 Well almost 1000 people seem to think otherwise. I am the Vox Populi!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly, I’ve experienced very bad nosebleeds and was lucky I didn’t drown. Had to have my nostrils cauterized on two separate visits to the ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat). Still need a saline spray occasionally. Nosebleeds are only cute to people who haven’t had them.
@@michellegulden1052 It was purely on accident, and they decided to leave it. Neither one of them broke character.

I adore everything about this sentence
My favorite line out of the movie
What everyone wants to hear from their love. 🥺
I love this scene in EVERY adaptation but this is the most emotional version for me and watching it again I get why now: it's because they are both crying. These Emma and Knightley are overcome by real emotion and I love to see it.
I know it's so heart-melting and genuine and oh so cute, the best of all the versions!!! 😍😍
me toooooooo i just watched the movie for 1st time yesterday, and i have watched 3 times.
It's so funny how Mr. Knightley gets flustered when her nose starts bleeding. And that gleeful arm raise at the end! A nice touch! Great job Mr. Flynn!
Love the arm raise!
came here after knowing that the nosebleed is not fake. Although it was scripted, Anya Taylor-Joy had an actual nosebleed on cue.
bwimmin how can this happen it’s a lie i think
Ruveyda Rana Poyraz same reason it was written in, Anya says she gets them often especially in high adrenaline moments like an important scene
@@ruveydaranapoyraz9262 you can see it in the bloopers. They put a small blood-pill in here nose (I think it functions that in contact with water it releases the blood), but it didn't work and instead flowed down her throat. She got so stressed, that, while the Make-up Artist was preparing a new pill, she started bleeding for real. While confusingly discussing if it's real blood of fake flowing out of her nose, the bleeding got so strong, that they decided to just quickly get over with the scene and treat Anya afterwards. So she didn't do it on purpose - it was a coincidence.
@@MAFDTTSdeda Or cause by the blood pill itself 😂
@@MAFDTTSdeda no wonder her nose was already red.
Emma: She's in love with you!

- And seemed on the verge of asking if her affections were engaged!

Thank you! There were a couple of bits I could never work out what she was saying so thanks for clearing it up
Thank you so so much
Thank you. I couldn't make out what she said. So I came to the Comments hoping to find this. You're great.
Thank you!
Best scene in the movie, Johnny Flynn brought that speech so well
I know! he really brought that 'if i loved you less I might be able to talk about it more' to life. he's so real!
I really love how she storms away from him in this scene. So cute and all dramatic effect in her red shoes. This was a really fun, layered take on Emma. Loved it.
I can feel Knightley's emotions...the dialogue delivery is so well done...he delivers every line so sincerely and genuinely...even if he's speaking fast because of his nerves, you can still feel he means everything and it's coming from his soul...excellent performance
Love the lighthearted comedic route this scene took. I started cracking up once the nosebleed started. The music is also a really nice touch :D
Really loved the music overall. Crazy that it was Phoebe Waller-Bridge's sister who composed the score.
I love this *ENTIRE* scene. Get yourself a man that looks at you the same way Mr. Knightley looks at Emma.
The costume designers the entire time watching the nosebleed 🥲🥲🥲
this is such an underrated movie UGH I LOVE ANYA
🙌🙌🙌
It is inconceivable she is not the highest paid actress in Hollywood atm
One of the best scenes in this lovely film. I love her vulnerability during this scene and the nosebleed is a very nice touch - it exposes her vulnerability deeper.
0:29 I love how frustrated he is...he doesn't want her to be his "friend" goddamit!
I thought the same
he seems like this word "friend" literally hurts him
We've all been there bruh. Solidarity.
At least he wasn’t in the REAL friendzone
“No, No I must do it. I must Go.” And this Ladies, Gents, and NonBinary Folk- is what we call Character Development.

0:02 "I must tell you Emma" He was smiling because he wanted to tell her
0:06 "then do not speak" poor Mr Knightley he wanted to say his love to her but she thought he was going to say about his love for Harriet congrats Emma you made him sad
0:20 and you see here is that he is crying and Emma is ready to face the pain of him liking Harriet
0:22 "if you wish to speak to me as a friend or ask my opinion as a friend" When you see her saying as a friend (also when Mr Knightley hears) you can see they're acting like their facing her biggest fear
1:22 "will you marry me" as she hears that she gets a nosebleed which is amazing comedy and look how he just wipes away the blood as if its not digusting
1:51 "HARRIET SHES INLOVE WITH YOU" as you see the smile here its like he wants to laugh. Its just comedy gold for him
2:10 "ROBERT MARTIN ROBERT MARTIN" and he knew that Robert martin still loved Harriet so he was going to tell him to ask her again.
2:31 when he heard she said she must do it he was like "are you sure?" and she gave the expression "yes but no".
2:47 And he is cheering because SHE LOVES HIM
Its amazing how he was happy ,then sad then was going to laugh out of the comedy gold ,then happy and Emma was sad and sad again ready to face the pain, then shocked (mixed of sad and happy feelings) and at last she's ready to fix her mistakes
I love how color schemed every frame in EMMA is! This scene especially, the green and yellow of the trees represented in her dress, the grey of the manors represented in his outfit. Perfection!
This scene is too perfect, which I didn't even know was possible. And you can tell what an amazing actress Anya is because of her real on-cue nosebleed!
It is not possible. No human being is capable of producing a real nosebleed deliberately, no matter how hard they try. They dropped red substance into her nose that accidentally run down on her throat first and while they were discussing how to try it next she started bleeding unexpectedly (maybe the substance upset her mucous membranes ?) Watch the special features on the DVD. It's amazing how some people believe everything they see.
Btw, I find this scene utterly disgusting. Anyone with a nosebleed would turn away and try to hide it especially a lady with class. He messing with the blood and then she shouting with him like a mad ... it's 21st century insanity and has nothing to do with the real story.

he walks away, she realizes that she has hurt him and he's in pain, and he wants to confide his feelings about Harriet in her. They both are buried in emotions and misconceptions here and so confused and this scene conveys that perfectly...she tells him that he must envy Frank, and then calls him a "friend" and at this point he's so hopeless...and we must recall that in the book he has just returned after a trip to Brunswick Square, he comes back to console HER, after leaving because he's the one that can't cope with how much pain/love he's in himself.

SUCH AN INCREDIBLE MR KNIGHTLEY
Emma : no, i can not
Knightley : why not 😰

anya Taylor joy is incredibly talented
i love this scene so much, at 1:47 they just forget about the nose bleeding so funny.
Fun fact # That was her actual blood. Her nose spontaneously bled at the right moment according to the interview- crazy!
And to think he also danced with Harriet coz she’s very important to Emma shows how he’s a true gentleman and lover🥹
I jus relearned the nosebleed was real. What a special moment. And his little hooray and the end 😂♥️🥰
The nosebleed was natural I was told. All of them got bamboozled. And to think both actors proceeded with their lines, delivering it so well.
When her nose started bleeding I was like: Eleven who? 🤣
Mr. Knightley adding all the adjectives to avoid panic of potentially failed proposal!

The music makes this perfect 😂😂😂
The guy does such a good job lol it just sounds and feels so genuine especially when she says ‘as a friend’ and it looks like it literally pains him
This is so funny 😁😁😁. I love how when there is all seriousness in the world, the comic relief kicks in 🤣
I understood this movie so much better once i knew that clueless was based off of it
Is Clueless really based off of it ? How ? There are little to no similarities between the two stories
@@LinaIsWeird Yes, it is! In a very light and adapted way. The big similaritie is Cher as a 90's version of Emma Woodhouse, and Paul's charachter being a brand new Knightley. It is much more "inspired by" than "based on".
There’s a couple other parallels. But Clueless has no Jane Fairfax analog, for instance, who I would argue is a key character.
I think this is the most romantic scene in any movie, and I’m a guy.
This is now one of my favorite movies of all time!

What a beautiful love scene !!!
She briefly slips into an American accent at 2:06
She doesn’t. I mean, how could she? She isn’t american.
In the phrase "her affections" plenty of Brits would pronounce the R when the following word is starts with a vowel. It's called a liaison.
I don't hear it
@@TheBc99 but the "were engaged" part was very american
Yes she totally slips into an American accent. I'm surprised they didn't do another take. But then again it probably seemed perfect at the time they filmed it.

Mr. Knightley as if shot to the chest. It must have taken him a LOT of courage to ask Emma to marry him.
Favorite scene omg
Fantastic jolly colour pallet!
Love that she was about to reject a proposal because of her friend. She's so cute in this scene
This scene alone makes me want to watch the movie.
The nosebleed as a reply to his cutest proposal. 😂😂😂 I LOVE IT😂
I first watched this, and literally screamed (ngl) when her nose started bleeding.
Can someone explain to me why he's so happy at the end? I feel like I'm missing something because she refuses his proposal... But I guess all the emotion communicates that she is in love with him too? And I guess because she said she can't marry him because of Harriet and not because she doesn't want to?
Yes, he gets she loves him back and they can be together..after she gets a Robert Martin for Harriet :D
She didn’t refuse him, she said she can not. there is something else going on.
She refuses him because Harriet has fallen for him, but she sets about trying to right that little problem. All the while Emma proves that she is as head over heels in love as he is, even though she can not yet accept the engagement. I'd be pretty thrilled too.
Truly a testament to Austen’s brilliant characterization- at first, Emma refuses because of Harriet, but they both know they’re in love with each other at this point. Harriet is the only thing stopping her, so Knightley offers to fix that problem for her, but she knows she must make amends for her own faults. He wants to help because he loves her, and she wants to grow because she loves him. Her acknowledging that it has to be her to do it (even when he clearly offered!) is her saying that she wants to do the right thing for him, even if it means admitting she was wrong. So by the end of the proposal, he knows she has basically accepted because she is going to find Martin for Harriet. He knows that will work out fine, so to him, it’s basically a yes. Also, something I love: when Harriet is confessing to Emma her love for Knightley, Emma is spot on suggesting that he’s asking for Martin. Because she knows him and how he thinks. Just a sweet sign of their intimacy in friendship.
@@ylimekimmie Yess I love these little details! But I would attribute that first part more to the director and screenwriter though because in the book, Emma manages her confliction with Harriet by getting her to visit her sister and brother-in-law. Mr. Knightley sends Robert Martin there for business with his brother but also to get him another chance with Harriet, and Emma doesn't know that she accepts his second proposal until after the fact, and is still in disbelief until Mr. Knightley confirms it to her. I really like that this version gives Emma more agency and shows her development as a character better!
So Sweet , Heartstrings My Heart & Tears
Princesses Cry
My favorite scene!
im just proud to use EMMA's pict as my Whatsapp icon, the color palette here is just perfect
Emma has her hair arranged in an Aphrodite knot. She is in front of the Linden tree. That tree symbolizes marital love and was sacred to the goddess of love. Emma is like Psyche who could not see her husband, cupid. Cupid wounded himself with his own arrow. His mother, Venus sent him to wound Psyche with the arrow. When Cupid saw he he could not let another man have her, so Cupid wounded himself with his own arrow. Emma looks up at the statue of Aphrodite at Donwell Abbey.
The tree in this scene looks like a horse chestnut (genus Aesculus), not a linden (genus Tilia.) I identify trees in these movies the way others identify hairstyles and dresses :-)
