    This is my favourite scene, both in the movie and in the book. Emma is always described as very vain and full of herself - and maybe in many aspects she is, being so immature. But here she reveals her selfless and affectionate heart: there are very few women that, in a social situation like this, wouldn't even feel a hint of envy seeing a gentleman that they admire and esteem pay such special attention to another woman (even if she is a friend). Instead this moment makes her evening, and she is happier for Harriet than if Kinghtley had invited Emma herself. In the novel it is more explicitly described (here not so much) how anxious she is and how she can't enjoy her evening knowing Harriet is sitting out and has been snubbed.

      People do not understand Emma. She is frusturated. She CANNOT marry and leave her father. Her snobbery hides her frustration. George loves Emma and yells at her because he thinks she would be better off with a younger man. George dies not want to give up his independence. He is frusturated. He sees the fierce love Emma has for her father and he wants that for himself.

      It's probably because Emma knew that she was far better than Harriet and once Mr. Knightly had givem opinion about the young girl which assured Emma that he wouldl never ever marry the girl.
      Moreover, even if Emma felt special with Mr. Knighly, but the kind manner he has shown to Harriet even made him a more impressive gentleman!

    what makes it even more beautiful in the novel is that after that vulgar comment from Elton , we only know about Mr knightly proposal for Harriet when Emma actually sees them dancing and advancing towards her and that what gave me a great excitement and astonishment at the way Jane Austen made that scene to surprise us and yet make us feel the joy that both Emma and Harriet felt . So in this movie , they show us the moment he asked her (which is not in the novel) , and I prefer it in the novel tbh ..

    • @eyrena
      @eyrena 3 роки тому +45

      It is not so much about her being left out, but about a deliberate insult from Mr Elton as he publicly slights her. By inviting Mrs Weston, but subsequently refusing Harriet, he makes it clear for anyone who could hear the exchange that he doesn’t want to dance with Harriet, specifically. And, on top of that, he knows that she was in love with him, so he is being not only deliberately mean, but also cruel.

    • @sims2lovealot
      @sims2lovealot Рік тому +2

      It may not seem like such a big deal to us these days, but back then it was a huge insult to refuse to dance with someone, or to deliberately exclude them from dancing. It was extremely disrespectful and reflected badly on the excluder. That's why as well in Pride & Prejudice, Elizabeth takes it so to heart when Mr Darcy initially refuses to dance with her.
