Best exhaust note I ever heard from a truck was one of these with a straight through pipe dumping just in front of the rear axle. I was following it up a steep grade through a cut in the hill and the turbo whistle, coupled with the reverberation from the exhaust bouncing of the side of the hill, was truly eargasmic. When we reached a clear stretch of road I pulled out and passed the guy and noticed he was wearing heavy duty earmuffs, LOL.

Love the old Macks!! These were the trucks I was cutting my teeth on when I first started working on trucks for a living in 90. Have seen alot of changes over 30 plus years, still love the old iron! Didnt need a computer. Just basic tools and common sense!

Macks and Brockways hold a special spot for me. I got a chance to ride in Superliner powered by a 700 hp 998ci V8. 136k felt like 80k on a regular truck.

@Only4Trucks gotta tell you, it's like riding in a locomotive powered by an ALCO or EMD V16 turbodiesel. Same thump, same low resonance sound. Are you going to keep the 865ci V8 or swap in something else with better parts availability? The boat folks still run the marinized E9s, but they are not cheap.
I like the V8s but doing a rebuild on any of the systems is silly expensive unless you have connections.

Drove R model Macks Superliners RD and CH Macks in my logging years but I think a clean decked out R model is my favorite. I envy you but then I don't cause you have one hell of a project there. I use to operate a Mack DM. MACK in my opinion is the best trucks out there. Your R700 is gorgeous. You are blessed to have that. By the way, few people know how to operate splits and manuals. I ran lumber trucks and concrete trucks all over the Rockies including the continental divide. I trained drivers as well for the company… lots of turn over. Regardless, have fun.

That reminds me of the day I brought home my old 68 Mack Cabover she was an old mine truck out of GoldField Nv, she started on ether at the old mans house , and that V8 Mack has such a distinct sound, quadraplex trans, twin stick, single axle rear end, loud azz wig wag indicator, ceramic clutch, no power anything, it was fun to learn how to drive truck on that (a few years ago) . I did have to get the massive remy starter rebuilt but she ran strong, shouldnt have sold that one.

Ztr pump repair in richland is a good place to go and he isnt too far from you. I have used him a couple times for tractors. He deals with tractor diesel pumps mostly but i wouldnt see why he wouldnt do a truck pump. They are mostly the same if parts can be found or machined. Not super expensive but i guess depends on the pump. If i had a test stand id help you out but i dont. Just an injector pressure tester. Tach is that cable on the front you showed. I second the motion on the dust cover being the threaded hole that someone else said. I can look in my manual to see if I can find a image of that plug. I have 3 old mack manuals and the one shows the 865 v8. The pages for that are well used and apparently who had the manual before had done quite a few of them.

I don't know if he knows your channel but I'm going to reach out to him and see if I can pass his contact info along to you. There is nothing in an old Mack he can't fix. .
